I was basically told by Sony, sorry about your luck. I purchased this TV in 2017 after my father has had his Sony Bravia for over 15 years. I had done tons of research prior to purchasing and thought I was getting a quality product from Sony, since the TV was more than $2000. It has spent the past 6 months in a spare bedroom collecting dust until I found this video. I was about to bite the bullet and buy a new TV (not a Sony). I can’t thank you enough for this easy tutorial!
Incredible to hear it worked for you! I received similar treatment from Sony. Apparently the LED fix is too laborious so they write it off. Just turn down the backlight a bit to avoid flickering. Cheers! Mine is still running several years post fix.
Thank you so much it really fixed my issue. The Bl_ERR pin on my tv was on the main power board so make sure to find the board that holds that pin with the diagram. Life saver video!!!
Russell Remley This is fantastic! A year ago I looked everywhere for a fix and when I couldn’t I did the same. Put a blanked over it and put it in the closet. Glad it’s up and running! Cheers
Thank you !! 2 years ago My XRB65x900c had this issue 2 days after the extended warranty expired !! Box store wanted $99 just to diagnose repair would be extra ! I boxed it up placed it in the attic (twice it almost went to the dump ). On a whim I search for a repair and found yours !!! Did exactly what you said and less than 20 min this 3k paperweight is fully functioning again !!!
I have a similar story! I’m so glad you stumbled upon this video and you’re operational. Keep your backlight brightness to around 20-25 to avoid any flickering from the dead LED’s. Cheers my friend!
Awesome. Will try. I posted on the Sony forum that I saw that original video on RUclips, taken down now, and the person doing it actually added a ring to the end and ground to the screw at the left. I like this way better. Thanks
Oh my goodness! It worked! 😭🤗 thank you so much for going the extra mile and making this video! Thank you! ... also for anyone wondering about the tiny cable just pull it out with some pliers and make sure its the right one because there are 2 groups of cables labeled the same
WORKED!!! good lord sweet baby Jesus! Thank you so much! Very simple easy fix to get you though. Not sure how long it'll last but its working now. Getting the plastic panel off without busting a few clips..... that's a whole other story. Thanks again!
Patrick Cantwell I popped a few plastic clips off myself. Build quality isn’t fantastic in this round of Bravia’s. I’ve moved on to Samsung’s Q series. Glad this helped! Be well buddy!
Thanks a bunch. I was following the thread on the Sony forums. I was a bit confused on how exactly to go about this. You're video was immensely helpful. Cheers.
After years of trying everything on RUclips fixes and Sony telling me need new motherboard, reddit, forums.. had to get a new tv in the meantime time. 3:34 this fixed mine in 5 mins!!!! 8500g Bravia. Thankyou So much!
Quickly commenting for everyone - Firstly, for those of whom this worked for, fantastic! This procedure is to circumvent an underlying issue with dislodged or burnt out LED’s at the base of the TV that’s triggering the backlight error. To complete the fix you need to remove all control boards, carefully peel off LED connections and replace the LED panel that’s faulty. This is a far more significant undertaking and the part is difficult and expensive to locate. Typically there are four sets of LED ‘strips’, I’ve only been able to find these strips on eBay but you’d need to validate the part number and proof of functionality. Otherwise if you can deal with one or two dead LED’s you’ve got your TV back. Good luck to all and I’m truly happy some are having success.
Hi! I recently started having a similar issue with my TV as well. The only difference is that mine is blinking 6 times after it shuts down automatically. Would you recommend the same solution as you mentioned in the video? Model is Sony Bravia W60B
Thank you for the assist. This fox worked on my tv today. I had to find another video to show me how to remove the pin using a razor blade. Took me 20 minutes and saved me from having to buy a new pled. Thank you so much.
Tiffany Falk Thank you! I’m so happy this is helping so many people get their TV’s up and running. To believe we spent anywhere from $2-3k on these to have it fail within the first two years of use. I can remember what the Sony service rep told me when I called “We’ll, that’s the average life span of an LED TV.” I told him, maybe for you! But why do I have a Samsung in the other room going 7 years strong. Wild! Anyway, cheers my friend! Be well during these strange times.
Dude! Your my new hero! You saved me time and money. This worked, and I am very grateful for your time and effort towards research. I have TVs coming in all the time. My son does home theater... Cheers to you!
Ernest Sharps likewise! This poor TV was sitting in my closet for nearly a year before I was just sick of seeing such a nice TV sit idle. I will say though the backlight does flicker a bit now so it’s not a long term solution but it will keep the tv in service for at least another year or two. Good luck and cheers my friend! Be well.
Thank you for your tireless effort you save me a lot of money because it was after the store to get a new TV. I tried all of the service Sony tries of how to fix it nothing worked. So I figured what the heck if I’m gonna have to get a new TV I can just open this one up my mess it up well it was going to be shit canned anyway. The hardest thing for me though is just getting the back of the TV off. The only reason it was difficult for me to get it off is because I am an ex-Navy diver and over 20 years of putting my body to the test I move like a two-year-old child Hooya thank you so much again so happy I don’t have to get another TV great job
Honest first thoughts while watching your video. Why did it take him 4 months, I found the power supply fix for within 10 min of searching.... Oh... Wait what!?!?... Bypass what.... Shut up! Thank you for taking the time to shoot this video. You have helped out alot of people by doing this. I do not know if it will stay fixed but currently staying on longer than it has before. I liked and subscribed. Happy Corona virus Easter!!
Paul Childers Thank you, Paul! Yeah - I had tried most everything before I found someone on Reddit talking about some unrelated trouble shooting and where breakers might be located and figured the Sony engineers probably built a trip near the LED board to avoid damage due to a power spike. My TV is still going about 5 months in! Cheers and Happy Easter. God Bless...
Ya, the bypass makes perfect sense to see if it is the actual power supply or not. I think my issue is the lower LED strip. Now that it is back on it is a bit discoloration, like a red Hugh. It is not very noticeable, it only is somewhat more noticeable with white backgrounds. I'm going to not tell my wife to see if she can even notice it. Thanks again. Hope yours lasts for more than 5 months, I'm sure it will fingers crossed.
Awesome video man!! I was about ready to chunk this thing out the window. Sony was no help at all and basically useless so I really appreciate the video.
Thank you for sharing! I did this yesterday and the TV is working much better (so far). Knowing the real problem is the LED strips, I'll regard this repair as an effective "band-aid", buying me time to budget for a replacement TV. Shame on SONY for producing a high-end product with a service life of only 5 years, and no replacement parts available.
Couldn’t agree more! Glad this worked as a temp solution. If you experience flickering in the future with this bandaid reduce the backlight brightness a bit as more LED’s are destined to fail. Chalk it up to poor soldering or quality control. Glad you’re back up and running.
Update - In three week's time, even after setting the brightness to the minimum, the flickering, though inconsistent, degraded to the point where the TV was no longer viewable. Those three weeks did give us enough time to research/select/purchase/install a replacement TV (not SONY). Thanks again for your help.
Fixed. Same TV. 4 red lights a few days after the 3 year old threw a cars toy at it. I'd add that a crazy small flathead screwdriver helps get the wire out, then it snaps into the ground port. Also, there isn't any noticeable issues with the screen once if started working again. Seems like Sony's all or nothing approach to back lighting must sell a lot of TVs. Thanks a ton for sharing. Feeling like I should send you a portion of the money I saved 😁
Matthew thank you ! this needs to be on Sonys Website or they should be paying you!! I was seconds away from tossing the tv thinking there is no hope. Simple easy fix. just gotta give that one wire a little bit to get loose then re connect it into the new port. Thanks again !!
Michael Christopher that’s great news! I’m so glad you were able to salvage it. I assume Sony’s strategy is to just have us buy new ones. I hate seeing a nice piece of technology curbside. Cheers!
Wow this fix worked for me! Thanks for the video! Unfortunately I replaced my TV before I saw the video.. oh well now what to do with an extra TV.. ( first world problems.. lol) Thanks Mathew!
Max Guzman Awesome! Likewise, I had replaced it and it sat idle in a spare bedroom and I got tired of looking at it and decided to do a little tinkering. Enjoy my friend! Cheers
Thanks bro. Had the exact same model, but mines only had three blinks. Regardless, it solved the problem. My TV has been running for over 5 years and hopefully I can get another 5 years now.
OMG OMG OMG I have been trying to solve this issue for weeks now, I didn't want to take to repairer who doesn't give a shit and basically swap out the mainboard for hundreds of dollars when it doesn't need it. I watched your video and thought that's way too good to be true. I have 2 of these TV's so I was about to start swapping boards to narrow down the issue. I followed the vid and low and behold - working great. Thank you thank you thank you.
My friend you are a Lifesaver, God bless you. I was about to trash it, same exact model, you saved me a bundle....on another note... Thanks for nothing SONY...
Wow wow wow ! Worked like magic. This is really so cool. Thanks Matthew, this video made my day. Though just 1 question that burnt / fuse / malfunction / bad LED cause any problem? Need replacement soon or can leave it as is for long term. For now it works fine, reduce the brightness resolves black flickering issue as well. Thanks again.
Hi Yogesh! I’ve had that BL error re-wired since Nov 2019, so we’re approaching one year without issue. I haven’t experienced any overheating or other issues associated. I’d say it’s rather safe - thinking about the wiring diagram I can’t imagine a massive failure considering the voltage is pretty low. Cheers on the fix! Enjoy your TV again! :)
So...this worked perfectly, thank you! Right up until my wife dropped the flashlight on the screen and broke the screen. I have(d) a KDL-70W830B where there is no clear LED control board, but the white plug going into the power board had two tiers. I moved the BL_ERR wire from the bottom tier over to an open ground port and plugged it in there. Worked until wife tried to help mount it back up on the wall. Yes, still married.
Haha! I’m sorry, this is pretty entertaining. Aron, I’m so glad it worked on your model - nice work on reading that control board gibberish. I’m sorry the TV is now past tense. Still married lol, me too. Cheers!
Just a reach out for the XBR65x900c 4 blinking light ERROR SUFFERERS. It is the LED strips (3) that go bad. I found a guy on eBay who offers the service deal where you send in the strips for repair and ships them back to you..WORKED..Of course you have to get in there slowly and remove them to ship.
@@minnesota7010 i did. Just open the back panel and take a video or pics of every component position and place all the screws in baggies labeling them for reinstall. Remove every board slowly and carefully remove the strips and pack them with bubble wrap prior to shipping them in a oversize box. Good luck..Treat it as a puzzle off and on again.. Good luck..
Be careful taking off the back cover, I accidently pulled the electrical wire off the circuit board. Had to have a friend solder it back. Other than that this fix worked great. Saved a $4000.00+ TV from the garbage. And Sony WTF is wrong with you guys? Why would you design a great TV to crash over a few bulbs? TY Matthew!
Awesome! It makes perfect sense showing that the strip is connected fully to ground. I'm curious, do you have a total black spot on your screen where the LED (which was bypassed) is now black or dark? Also, when you start replacing LED strips please post another video. I've had by KD-70x690e for only two years, and the LEDs are already going out... I have a bunch of purple spots on my screen which is increeeedibly frustrating. Thanks and great video!
Hey! Glad this worked for you. Yes, similarly I can now identify the led strips malfunctioning. Often times if in dynamic mode it’ll flicker far more. I’m working on a full fix but as tv technology improves it may be cheaper in the long run to get a TV set that will stand the test of time. I came across Sony’s new Bravia line and it’s clear they know the problem and have taken design steps to fix it. I’ll keep everyone posted if I get the full fix done. Cheers my friend!
Thank you Matthew i have noticed this tip. However my Sony is an abravia Lcd and the control for the lamps is the inverter board which i relaced and thought i had suceeded but back to 4 blinks. I have no wire to the error pin from the power board. I think i need to change the main logic board and found a source.Any advce? thank you
A quick update, my tv still going strong after a year of using this fixing method. I’m glad I found this video otherwise my tv would be in the bin right now. Also a quick message to Sony and EU eco terrorists, if this is the way to saving environment by throwing working tv to the bin just because is to expensive to fix it, than good luck!!!!
Thanks so much for taking the time to post this video your fix worked to get the tv back on but now the screen flashes light and dark shadows. I suspect this is why the 4 red light blinking occurred in the first place. Probably the display board is bad? Any thoughts? Thanks!!
Mark Kuhlenschmidt Hey Mark - that’s right this fix helps get the crux of the issue to determine which LED’s have failed. To me it sounds like the led strip itself is the fault. This is a cumbersome task to replace as they’re underneath the screen. I’m beginning to have full LED strips go out and go dark momentarily and come back on. I really believe this is just a major deficiency in the engineering of the television. This is a common problem with going so thin and not having adequate cooling mechanisms in place. Good luck!
Lifesaver! Took a whole 20 mins tops and I kinda broke the pin trying to force it into 9 however, I just unscrewed the ground near it stuck it there, screwed it tight and works again 💪Thanks for the easy tutorial man!
I have an KD 65XE8596. it doesn't have a back light or chip board for it. But on the main power board it does have (cn6401_8) BL_ERR. Will it work the same?
@matthewdart Thank you for posting this video.Your video is helpful. My TV also showing Same issue past two weeks.Am using TV from past 4.5 years.I have few questions. How long your TV is running with "BL_error signal is connected to GND"??? Have you seen any issues after connecting to GND??? Explain your observations or issues after connecting BL_ERR connected to GND? Thanks in Advance.
Hope this video was of help. I posted this video the day I performed the change. I’ve seen one inconsistency and have identified the dead LED’s. On occasion, perhaps once per month for a short period I’ll see the LED panel flicker. This is normally resolved within a few minutes. Otherwise no overheating, no shut downs, and best of all, no more error codes.
I have an XBR-65X900C that had the 4 blinks problem. I got it to start up and mostly work by changing the LD_ERR pin 2 to pin 9. The previous owner put it in unconditioned storage for a year (causing thermal expansion of the solder joints) after which it stopped working. If I keep it down to brightness level 6/50, only one LED is bad, but turn it up and the rest start flicking on and off. Could I take out the backlight strips and hit them with a heat gun/hair dryer? I'm not skilled at soldering so I'm not sure if that would ruin anything with the flux or not. Honestly I think I would just wait out until I'm ready to spend the money on new backlights and then try it first.
Hi Max - I think you run the risk of compounding the problem if you unseat those LED’s still in contact. Best to do a full replace if you have the time and can locate the part. Similarly I keep the backlight on low still. Best of luck and glad it’s working again.
HI Matt, can you help me with my TV KDL-60W605B Same problem. got the wiring and pins but ERR pin goes directly from power supply board to the main board (no LED control board).

Cheers my friend! So glad you’re back up and running.
still working today in 2024?
My friend you are a Lifesaver, God bless you. I was about to trash it, same exact model, you saved me a bundle....on another note... Thanks for nothing SONY...
phantastik7 Awesome!! So glad this worked for you as well. We are all engineers at heart. God Bless my friend! Cheers
Thanks a lot.. it fixed my tv .. this is what RUclips was made for
Hey Matthew that fix mine I couldn't believe it!! That's worth giving you a 100.00 dollars compared to what a new would have cost!! Thanks man.
Cheers my friend! We’re here to help one another.
When you say cheers would you happen to be from Australia?
David Hardin haha no, habit. Just love an ice cold ale!
@@TheDarticus LOL. Just been there before its nice over there. Thanks again take care.
Thank you. I did this and it worked!!!! Thanks!!!
Amazing!
Thank you, worked perfectly.
I spent hours looking for a solution. This worked for me after having the tv sir for over 1 year. Great video! Simple solution
My tv: kdl-60w840b
Fantastic, Sir Rahman! Glad you’re back in business. Cheers
still working in 2024?
Thank you so much it worked out perfectly. Thanks for clearly explaining the whole process. Yes, SONY no thanks to you!
Ly Tin Hey, Ly Tin! So glad it worked out for you. Enjoy! Cheers
Amazing. Thanks. Up and running.
It worked!! Thanks dude!!!!
Thank you!!
I was going to buy new TV today, thank you one more time
stil working today in 2024?
Cheers!
thank you so much i have a newer version of the sony bravia and this how to worked a treat thumbs up from me thanks
Fantastic! Have a beautiful day.
@@minnesota7010 I feel for you..The TV still runs..Here is the ebay item #264743323420
@@johnnisyrios9668 thanks buddy John who put the LCD light strips in for you did you do it or did you bring it in to have someone work on it.
Good luck..
IT WORKED THANK YOU MATTHEW
Thank you! Be well!
Awesome .. I just fix mine great work
Thank you! This worked perfectly!
I'm going to try this tomorrow. Fingers crossed!
Thanks for the video, mine is fixed now.
Tracy Medford Great! Cheers
Thank you for ur post. It worked!1
I tried it and it works perfectly. Cut the 2nd wire and grounded to a screw on the board
Your the man!!!! Thank you sir well said screw you Sony!
Nice!Going to try this to an 85" 85x900h I got for free because it has the 4 blinking light issue.
dude you are a god among men!
Lol just a friend here to help! Cheers!
Thank you so much ...
This worked. Great video !!!
Awesome
Glad you’re back online - Cheers!
YOU ARE AMAZING!
Helping out our fellow humans! Cheers!
Thank alot mate mine is working now
Thank You!
It works, thank you! :)
Just in time for the Copa America final this weekend. Cheers!
I did like u said......thank you some much
Thank you Matthew i have noticed this tip. However my Sony is an abravia Lcd and the control for the lamps is the inverter board which i relaced and thought i had suceeded but back to 4 blinks. I have no wire to the error pin from the power board. I think i need to change the main logic board and found a source.Any advce? thank you
Fixed good job sir
Tim Jack Salutations and Cheers!
Thank you thank you thank you!
Cheers! Have fun watching it this weekend.
still working the tv now in 2024?
I need to do this but for some of us we need step by step otherwise things can go downhill really quick!
Somebody get this guy a case of beer
Cheers brother! Fav comment on this video to date. 🍻
Yahtzee! 👍 My 7 year old Sony Lives again! Thanks!
I have an KD 65XE8596. it doesn't have a back light or chip board for it. But on the main power board it does have (cn6401_8) BL_ERR. Will it work the same?
You can open led srtip and check for loose led soldering to the strip because it is because of one or more non-functioning led(in my opinion ).
briekhnaa you’re absolutely right. If it weren’t so difficult gaining access to those LED strips would make life quite a bit easier!
My tv is doing the same but only when going into 3D mode. Any thoughts on whether this will fix it
HI Matt,
can you help me with my TV KDL-60W605B Same problem. got the wiring and pins but ERR pin goes directly from power supply board to the main board (no LED control board).
tHANK YOU
Wow thank you. I would love to try this. Before I dismantle the TV...mines a Sony XBR-55X850C . Do you think it could work?
will this work for a XBR-65x850A????
I have the 4 red blinking lights no picture at all and I am able to hear the background noise
Attempting this right now
