Hey Dale, I hope you see this but thank u for your comment. I'm in CDL school now. We are in same Gen bro. Told the same thing but I'm still watching. I should be done by Sept. I'm loving this. Hope you're doing well Godspeed
I got my cdl last year with all endorsements except passenger, and no manual restriction. Did it at age 52, looking to leave the headaches of an office job for my dream job. These videos are amazing and the comments below inspirational. Wanted to get my CDL on my own versus having a mega carrier train me, even though I'll probably go there for actual trucking training. Wanted to save enough emergency funds to cover the cut in pay during my learning curve. Can't thank you all enough.
I’ve been struggling at cdl school with burnt out instructors yelling left, right, right, more right, left and whacking the truck with their pre trip stick. You are vastly superior. Thank you Dale.
It’s sad my school didn’t even teach us how to back up into a dock. Took me 30 minutes to back it up into a dock my first 2 days driving but after watching your video… today it took me ( same dock) just a little under 5 minutes! Thanks so much for taking your time to make this video and showing us your skills. Truly appreciated it 😎!
As an instructor, I do find your videos helpful for people that learn visually. Will recommend your channel for present and future students. Thank you sir.
I've been out of training for 6 years now and I've always been an avid "bottom of the steering wheel backer." When your first video caught my eye and you said that trying to guide the back of the trailer was the wrong approach I thought this guy is kind of full of 'it'. Well, I watched through all 3 of your backing videos and I am impressed. I can now see how guiding the front of the trailer like a wheelbarrow and focusing on the Kingpin and tandems is a much better approach. Kudos for teaching an old dog a new trick.
Thanks Don! Most veterans are not opened minded enough to consider a different approach. So, I too am impressed. I appreciate the feedback. And you're welcome.
I went from CDL school to working for a company that never put me with a trainer. Yes I was that guy who struggled with the opposite myth. This video changed my life. Steering in the direction you want the front trailer to go totally changes everything. You might be getting a Christmas card from me this year.
@@Sip28 my mind always had to do the reverse of what I was taught. I have not struggled once I saw this video. For example, if I see the front of my trailer needs to over to the right, I turn my steering wheel to the right. I good place to learn this is go to rest areas. Your trailer will usually go in off center and you'll pull ahead a little bit and see what direction the front of your trailer needs to go for the trailer to to straight on that line. Do it a few times. Nobody will be rushing you like a truck stop or a shipper. It takes time. 7 months in I finally feel like I got it. Good luck !!! It can be very frustrating. I know
The effort you put in these videos is unreal. I've watched so many videos on backing but your methods and explanations are THE best. Thanks for the invaluable help. Looking forward to more videos.

My first time watching this, very informative. I just failed my CDL test twice today. Due to backing up- I really hope these tips help and im able to pass on my last attempt,
My first failed test was due to parallel, BACKING & Offset I passed. Then today it was the BACKING & OFFSET that gave me issues and made me fail. I’m so frustrated about it
I am so happy I found this channel. I am currently in my first we of CDL training and yesterday was my first time practicing backing up in a straight line. It did not go well. This video helped me to understand what to keep an eye on when backing. I now have a better understanding of when to turn the wheel and how much based on the pivot point and how I put pressure on the king pin. You have done an outstanding job explaining that with your camera angles. I can't wait to put what I've learned to the test. Thank you so much!!!! I am going to tell my fellow students about your channel. ❤️

I’m not sure if this goes completely against what you’re teaching or not but I’ve never once thought about “opposite thinking” but I also back from the back and sides of the trailer. My instructor taught me to always steer towards the problem, keeping in mind that it will take a while for the back of it to catch up because of the pivot point. So if I notice the back of my trailer is coming towards an obstacle on my drivers side a bit too quickly then I would steer towards the driver side to slow down the movement of the back. If I notice my trailer is “drifting” to the passenger’s side while I’m pretty well straightened out then I’ll steer a bit towards the passenger side to get it straightened out. I drove for about 3 years between 2017 and 2020 but I haven’t driven since. My new boss in an unrelated field got a semi so we don’t need to rely on carriers for our deliveries and since I have experience; guess who’s driving it? Lol. Well I’m trying to get my CDL back and I’m still a decent backer but one of our docks is off a narrow street and there are very expensive obstacles in the next dock over (a camper and a boat) and they’re connected and I always have trouble with keeping it on the pavement and I end up just saying “screw it” and get the trailer lined up and then getting my cab straightened up which means I drive over the curb and into the grass and then straight line back and I hate doing that. I’m gonna put some of your methods to the test next time I back in there… I especially like the glove on the ground idea and I’m going to try out the offset rule and not steer too close to the outside curb which would necessitate my driving on the grass, I just thought I’d share what I was taught since that got my into some pretty tight spots a few years back but also thank you for sharing some new methods.
I've been backing car hauling trailers and goosenecks for years. I could thread them through a needle. My CDL trainer said big trailers are easier. I've been struggling so much to get it right, but when I mess up the trainer just stares at me like I'm stupid or something. This video taught me more in 8 minutes than I learned all day at CDL school. I'm going to try and put it into practice tomorrow. Thank you very much for taking the time to put this together.
I learned how to back .my boat using the king pin (pivot point) method explained here, even before ever seeing this video. So I know this is the best way. It took me 3 weeks to learn how to back a 53ft trailer because teachers were confusing me. I had to wait until I got the feel for it again. I think watching front if trailer to see where uts going is the best way. I need to get a handle on that.

I'm starting new tractor trailer Job today. I just got my Class A license 1/2022 and couldn't conquer alley dock with out 50million tries with that said I still passed the road test for this current job but my confidence level is still low. So with that said I just want to thank you for making these videos as I have 20% more confidence going out today with my trainer and the way you explained things makes way better sense then thinking opposite left and right to make the trailer move!
I have been driving over 30 years with almost 3 million consecutive safe driving miles, mostly in the difficult North East. I have been training others for years and I am now a lead trainer. This video is one of the best I've seen. Spectacular. Excellent, excellent job driver! Keep up the amazing work
I just got my CDL permit, and I'm going to school getting ready to take CDL test a little nervous this is a new career path for me as I've been in a personal shopper in hairdresser in my entire life, but as soon as I backed my first trailer in I was hooked, lol!!! Seriously no pun was intended!!😂❤️ That's just honestly how happy I have been since I changed careers at 50 years young! Thank you for your videos they are very helpful! 🙏
Started a busy local driving job a month ago, just 2 weeks after passing my CDL. Your videos are really helping me in having to jump in feet first. I really like how you explain the physics of truck and trailer movement and the high quality of all your camera angles. Thanks for this awesome channel.
USF Holland was one of the best jobs I ever had. Your brotheren from LI location lol. Pedaling freight all day in a 53' will make you a beast at backing up. Great vids!
Going into trucking soon. Backing up has to be the most difficult, most fear inducing , possibly most embarrassing, yet most important thing to get down. The last couple days I’ve been scouring for backing vids 😆. This is by far the most informative I’ve seen. Thank you sir!
Great videos. As a fellow instructor I really appreciate you showing real driving docks and locations not just the training lot. I am going to recommend the videos to my students and also use some of your instructions with my classes. Again great job.
Awesome! Thank you so much! I recently started working as an instructor at a Truck Driving school in FL. It is rewarding to see how emotional and appreciative the students are when they pass their test and get that CDL. Thanks again.
Your videos are exactly what the doctor ordered. Just started the driving portion of Class A a few days ago, and this will be invaluable...especially the mirror views. Thanks for these vids.
I use the same mentality when backing because trying to back thinking about the tail of the trailer was just too much to wrap my mind around mentally as a beginner. It's good seeing that I'm onto something with the technique that feels more comfortable to me. Taking my cdl test Monday! Thanks for the video 👍🏽
@@LordZevv that’s really good. What hell you with the steering of backing up. Because I am getting confused of which way to turn the steering wheel. I’m a rookie and it’s frustrating.
Extremely helpful , good work , I'm experienced driver but I still enjoying intelligent people like you,I wish you where around back when I started my career , I thought myself the hard way , your work is helpful to new driver since trucking schools are not worth a dam , they're a scammer
I am only a few classes into backing up - and not seeing much measurable improvement yet while my instructor walks beside me outside, and 'tells me' how to adjust/stop/restart/etc. At this point, i don't feel I am instinctively doing anything, and becoming confused as his directions often contradict my instincts on what I want to attempt to do (sometimes, it's simply him giving me a reverse command, because he's forgotten his right is my left - lol and he'll say oops - meanwhile, my brain is downloading confusion). Your channel - which is teaching techniques differently than I am being taught, hopefully adds to or corrects my understanding. I have to pass the exam in a few weeks! I wish I was close enough to take some lessons in person.
this is honestly my biggest fear! when someone starts giving me directions it’s hard for me to turn my autonomy back on and pick up where they left off. i’d much rather someone let me figure it out on my own or allow me to make mistakes (so long as i don’t tear anything up that is). i start next week and i’m pretty nervous but i’m super excited. i wish you luck!
Im in CDL training now, I was looking for something on reference points for backing 45, 90, straight, but this is going to help tremendously overall. I'm going to try it out tomorrow. Thank you for this.
I'm currently working on my CDL, and watching videos like these between classes to improve in backing. I want to be confident and comfortable by the time I take the test. This video is quite helpful.
I have been out of it from 2006. Drove for 33 years. Never got calm, comfortable or confident during a "test". We had supervisors (baby sitters) who would ride with us from time to time. For me it was always stressful. I hate those "test" they put you all through now. I think they put too much on you that should be left to OJT. If a state makes you test at their building they should have to provide the equipment. I drove for a great company and had super wonderful training, save for backing. I looked forward to that as I sure needed it. My trainer told me, I cannot teach you to back. You must learn that on your own. Shocked! After those 33 years, I almost had it. Good luck.🦇
O my god thank you for making this video u made it make sense, because before watching your video I was all over the place. I just wasn't understanding, but now I believe I do. Thank you so much
Im a Class A driver since 2001, the schools need to take students to actual delivery situations. I could D/H blindfolded, but show new people real life situations. Operating a 53 with a sleeper through tight roads is a skill they dont teach. Keep it up! Be safe
This man needs a golden statue which rotates with the sun....he is that brilliant. These videos are fantastic. I'm a Trucker and am always watching educational videos. These videos are truly refreshing. Keep it up Handsome!
@ATB , UK still teaches "watch the back of the trailer and the tractor front tires" techniques. While doing this I instinctively felt the instructions were somehow wrong but only now watching your videos I can understand your teachings are correct (even though we drive on different sides of the cab!
Hey man thanks a lot! About to take CDL permit test.. been nervous about really moving forward with it but videos like this really help develop understanding!
thanks so much, LOL, I was playing a truck simulator game and your video helped me a lot, I back parked first time without changing the camera angle, from inside the truck!!
For me its easier to put my hand on the bottom of the wheel.. My hand goes the direction I want the trailer to go.. simple and it doesnt take backward thinking
This is very helpful, you give tips and instruction you can understand. I started with using arrow awareness, now I also use the kingpin pressure . Last night I used the corners when backing almost instinctive. I had watched this video the night before.
Best video I've come across, not too long easy to understand with the visual help. (I'm very much a visual learner) Thanks! Especially the small inputs and watching the angle of where you are pointing. Euro truck simulator 2 maybe not the most realistic when it comes to driving, but I've learned so much in it especially with a virtual reality headset. Backing up and taking tight turns with a full simulator setup is the closest you can get to real life. It's great for practicing fundamentals.
I'm just finishing trucking school, road test this week or next and I've been using this method of steering after seeing your videos, less to think about, as long as you know which way the front of the trailer has to go, that's the way you steer.. (well that hand down).
I just stated CDL school in Orange County, CA this week, and like many comments state, I too was told NOT to watch videos. I am going to bypass their request and find a trusting content creator. Today I did “straight backs,” and I was struggling. The trailers are all manual transmission, which I am new to, so I am learning two things at once. The clutch gets me still, I need to practice using that leg. Anyway, my trailer would move so much, it was hard to keep it straight. After a few hours, I was barely able to stay in the cones. I need more practice! I hope I can learn from your instructions in these videos. Thank you in advance!!
Make small moves with the steering wheel when straight line backing. Keep your spine relatively still while glancing frequently at both mirrors. You will notice the front corners move. Everyone turns the steering wheel too much when they start out. Idle back. Glad you found my channel.
This is a master class. When I took class B training it was all about knowing what to look at and when to look at it. This video exemplifies that. I'll probably never have a trailer (even a small one) but if I get called on to pull one I'll know exactly where to come for a refresher.
Very helpful video and the advice on watching the front corners of the trailer is gonna make a big difference for me. I needed this exact video! Thanks bro! I'm about to watch this over n over til it STICKS! I test in 2 days!🤞🏾
The Dang truck didn't start had to reschedule. Then when I went back I blew it on Air Brakes. But see the funny thing is..... I passed the ENTIRE pre-trip and failed skills on my first run. So I was told I have to do airbrakes but it's not a pass or fail just gotta do it to drive the truck. But today I messed up on the Applied Brake portion and was told I made an error so we have to postpone and reschedule. And that it doesn't count against me, I still got 2 tries.
I’m in Truck School now. Love these videos, Thank You ! I get a little confused when I get the back of my Trailer Straight going into a space but my Tractor is off to a 45 to 90 Degree Angle.
At first I was thinking how much can I really..learn from a video of somone backing when im not the one in the driver's seat or even inside the truck! Welp after 3 of your videos thus far These Videos Are Great!! 👏
Really do enjoy the videos!!! The lessons are quite clear and easy to process. The "wheelbarrow" analogy is particularly interesting. "Wheels first, body second, tractor third." Never had it explained so wonderfully clear and concise.
Not exactly what I do. As I was saying in the other post, I just use the rear trailer axles as a reference to all my forward or rearward movement. I really didn't have any front corners of the trailer because I hauled low boy. I guess that's why I moved my hand to the direction the back of the trailer is sticking out in the mirror to bump it over the other way. I'm glad someone on line knows what they're doing and sharing it. Truck stops are getting dangerous. Been hit many times. Nothing jumps you out of a full sleep and on the hot top as fast as a trailer coming through your sleeper.
Thank you for your awesome video's. I'm in schooling right now for driving truck and take my big test this Friday. These will be very helpful when doing my 90s. The only maneuver that I'm have slight issue with. But I will get it.
Your videos show the details that most explanations by drivers trying to help (myself included) overlook. One method that helped with blindside backing is to: A- visualize the truck parked where you want it B- visualize pulling out until you're straight. C- we can pull out from a spot that looks impossible to back into.
Firebirdfreek Get American Truck Simulator (ATS) for your home computer. You will get plenty of driving and backing up experience ( from the drivers seat) before ever going to CDL School. Be sure to check out some of the ATS videos on RUclips besides the videos real truckers make.
My second day in CDL academy and I like this logic but I’m not sure which backing method will be best for me. I’ll do my first straight back today using the turn towards the problem method. I’m so determined to ace this CDL!
I'm in CDL school now. Luckily I'm not having too hard of a time backing but I feel bad for the other students in this school because I've had 3 different instructors for parking and they all explained it differently and used different reference points. Call me crazy but in a CDL school I think there should be a set curriculum and all the instructors should teach the same. 🤷🏻♂️

This video is one of the best I've seen. Spectacular. Excellent, excellent job driver! Keep up the amazing work
@@ronaldblain751 wow! Thanks so much!
@@ronaldblain751 I’m working as the head instructor at the Florida truckers institute currently
I love the long wheelbarrow analogy.
I'll have to think about the front corner steering strategy.
Had to watch this one a couple of times to "get" what Shelton was describing...
Once I did, it was such a great technique to use.
Thank you
Thanks Joel! Watching them ALL a couple of times is a great idea. Good luck to you!
You got this! Good Luck with everything! Let us know how it goes.
I agree. This is by far the most advanced CDL channel I seen. New fan
Started a busy local driving job a month ago, just 2 weeks after passing my CDL. Your videos are really helping me in having to jump in feet first. I really like how you explain the physics of truck and trailer movement and the high quality of all your camera angles. Thanks for this awesome channel.
Thanks Danielle! My pleasure glad they are helping!
USF Holland was one of the best jobs I ever had. Your brotheren from LI location lol. Pedaling freight all day in a 53' will make you a beast at backing up. Great vids!
Thanks for the feedback ! My brethren! LOL
Going into trucking soon. Backing up has to be the most difficult, most fear inducing , possibly most embarrassing, yet most important thing to get down. The last couple days I’ve been scouring for backing vids 😆. This is by far the most informative I’ve seen. Thank you sir!
Thanks! I agree. Be sure to watch all the videos in the series. There's a lot to take in. Good Luck to you!
@@AdvancedTruckBacking Will do! 💪🏾🚚
Thanks! Glad you found them. Good luck with everything!
Awesome! Good luck.
Everything went well?
@@Sip28 Yes! Finished training and been driving on my own since December.
Thank You! I agree.
This is EXACTLY what happened to me in class and I’m so upset!
Im in CDL training now, I was looking for something on reference points for backing 45, 90, straight, but this is going to help tremendously overall. I'm going to try it out tomorrow. Thank you for this.
You're welcome. Try episode 1 Ahmed, it may help. Good luck with everything!
How’d it go
I'm currently working on my CDL, and watching videos like these between classes to improve in backing. I want to be confident and comfortable by the time I take the test. This video is quite helpful.
I hope you find the time to watch them all. Good luck with everything.
Thank you so much
You're so welcome!
great job ! Wish could heard your tips before it took me 3 times to pass my cdl
Thanks Robert! Glad you passed.
I just started watching your videos it's been a big help compared to my current training school
Excellent Video! Really helped me get over the "opposite rule" things are much clearer now!!!
Im a Class A driver since 2001, the schools need to take students to actual delivery situations. I could D/H blindfolded, but show new people real life situations. Operating a 53 with a sleeper through tight roads is a skill they dont teach. Keep it up! Be safe
Thanks for the feedback Michael! You as well.
I agree. Thanks for the feedback!
I’am getting my CDL A and every You Tube video on trucking helps thank you 🙏 for sharing
Hey man thanks a lot! About to take CDL permit test.. been nervous about really moving forward with it but videos like this really help develop understanding!
You're welcome! Good luck with everything.
Ok I think you just solved a major confusion of my with the steer towards where you want it to go.
Thanks for the very clear and helpful explanations. The camera angles are great and your simple instructions really make a difference.
You’re welcome. Glad to hear that .
thanks so much, LOL, I was playing a truck simulator game and your video helped me a lot, I back parked first time without changing the camera angle, from inside the truck!!
Glad I could help!
Nice! Glad to hear that! Good luck to you!
I'm 65 this video was my ah ha moment to get me to realize how to straight back. I since went on to get my license and bought my first truck
Awesome! Congratulations!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this video. I will be starting my CDL training in two weeks and this will most definitely help.
I'm just finishing trucking school, road test this week or next and I've been using this method of steering after seeing your videos, less to think about, as long as you know which way the front of the trailer has to go, that's the way you steer.. (well that hand down).
Right on!
That wheel barrow analogy. 🤯 Thank you man!
You bet!
This is a master class. When I took class B training it was all about knowing what to look at and when to look at it. This video exemplifies that. I'll probably never have a trailer (even a small one) but if I get called on to pull one I'll know exactly where to come for a refresher.
Right on! Thanks for the compliment.
Very helpful video and the advice on watching the front corners of the trailer is gonna make a big difference for me. I needed this exact video! Thanks bro! I'm about to watch this over n over til it STICKS! I test in 2 days!🤞🏾
Glad to hear that! Good Luck on your test! Let us know how it goes.
But that offset method help me pass straight back with speed and confidence. I messed up on alley dock. And get this? I'm a yard goat! Crazy right SMH

Thanks for doing this we appreciate that 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I’m in Truck School now. Love these videos, Thank You ! I get a little confused when I get the back of my Trailer Straight going into a space but my Tractor is off to a 45 to 90 Degree Angle.
You're welcome! Glad you like them.
I like Jolly green giant pushing the wheel barrel, I can totally see that amazing thank you ,
At first I was thinking how much can I really..learn from a video of somone backing when im not the one in the driver's seat or even inside the truck! Welp after 3 of your videos thus far These Videos Are Great!! 👏
Right on! Thanks for the feedback!
Outstanding Videos! Thank you so much!
Greetings from Munich, Germany
Glad you like them!
Really do enjoy the videos!!! The lessons are quite clear and easy to process. The "wheelbarrow" analogy is particularly interesting. "Wheels first, body second, tractor third." Never had it explained so wonderfully clear and concise.
Great to hear!
Hands down the best video I’ve seen so far. Thank you for ur work
Thank You! Glad it was helpful!
Best backing instructive vids out there. Great work, your effort is appreciated. Thank you.
I appreciate that! You're very welcome!
Gotcha! I agree. Thanks for the visit.
This video is detailed and executed amazingly. 🤠
Thank you for your awesome video's. I'm in schooling right now for driving truck and take my big test this Friday. These will be very helpful when doing my 90s. The only maneuver that I'm have slight issue with. But I will get it.
You’re welcome! Good luck!
Thank You!
I'm going to make certain that I pass first time. I take test day before my birthday. What better present can I give to myself? None! 😁
This is a great video you Teach me because I am learning and listening to this thank you be blessed
You are so welcome
A much needed supportive and helpful information. Thanks.
I hope that it helps you!
Still watching but your intro was awesome!
Love your camera angles and theory. Great stuff
Glad you like them!
Your videos show the details that most explanations by drivers trying to help (myself included) overlook.
One method that helped with blindside backing is to:
A- visualize the truck parked where you want it
B- visualize pulling out until you're straight.
C- we can pull out from a spot that looks impossible to back into.
Thanks jroy!
Thanks for the help. It is close to being at the school with the freightliner Im learning in. 😀
Muchas gracias por tu video !!! Lo mejor que hay en RUclips. Estoy en la CDL truck training y esto está muy bien . Gracias
