  • This is the final backing maneuver and probably the most challenging. This channel has a Parallel Park video that shows step by step how to steer to get in the lane. It works the same on this maneuver but you have a big advantage. With this exercise you're backing into a 100' lane and the previous Parallel park lane is less. (The length of your truck plus 15 extra feet)

    If you have trouble remembering what turns to make. Use your visual references in your mirrors, the “v” in your landing gear, and remember this LEFT, RIGHT, STRAIGHTEN OUT, RIGHT AND LEFT, straight back. Something simple that stuck in my head for this.

      That's the indicator that you're at the right angle with the tractor trailer so counter steer at that point. These angles are an important factor in making the maneuver in as short of a space as possible. That's always going to be a challenge with a tractor trailer because of the length of the vehicle and the amount of space you have.

    As a driver that started in 1983 and is still driving today.
    It is so good to see someone teaching good backing and parking skills.
    I hope your students will take what they have learned when they enter the industry and do as well then.
    I have noticed so many that park these days will have their trailers 3-10 feet in a space behind them and they don't care about the next guy.
    Keep up the good work please.

      You're exactly right, We can only teach the correct way so a entry level driver can get the CDL and go out and get some additional training. I would hope that trainers continue to emphasize what they learn in CDL Truck Driving School and instill some "lessons of respect" and "etiquette" towards the other drivers trying to do the same thing as they are. Thanks for the comment!

      @@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstestAs a 66 year old student, I take this seriously. I'm hoping the company I work for will be so kind as to pair me with a competent senior driver who can teach me all the things I need to know. God knows the basic CDL test is but the start, not the end of learning.

    It’s all in the training please make sure you train the way you would have liked to be trained. Make it a pleasant experience, maybe the turnover rate for drivers is so high because the new drivers are going into this already with a bitter training experience. These guys will remember this for the rest of their life.

      This is our motto and we strive to be better everyday with a goal in mind to help everyone who is trying to accomplish this. You'll always find that one situation where someone just has to wreck your day with the big attitudes. It's in school and after you get into the work force whether it's in traffic, receivers, dispatchers, or DOT, you'll find them in all segments of the industry. Best of luck!

    The tire and wheel has to be closer to the cone rear left side of the trailer on a smaller trailer..

  • @6esss816

    How far right do you turn though? The whole steering wheel? And same with the left turn how much do you turn?

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  Месяц назад

      You're positioning the front of the trailer as you go back and you want to do that in a short distance that requires turning all the way. I indicate when to turn at the point where the drive axles are inline with the center point of the landing gear frame and the trailer axle is at the entrance line and the same with the drive axle. Those are turning points. Watch the parallel park video in this series and you'll see this demonstrated again. This exercise is a combination of the offset and the parallel park but with more distance than before which makes it easier. Watch where your trailer and tractor axles are. You're in a 12 foot lane with an 8 foot wide truck and you should have about 2 feet on each side from the tire to the boundary line. I hope this helps, good luck! I think one way to handle this is to accurately document the details of your situation. You’ll need times and dates and any one else who can be a witness for you. Take that information to the training centers director and lodge a formal complaint. You may not be the only person who has had problems and if this person is not suited for this position it takes documentation to correct the job performance or terminate this individual. It’s unfortunate that you have to be involved with this situation but you are helping the other students that come after you. Thank you!

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  2 месяца назад +1

      The video starts out with a hard turn to the left, this turn continues until the passenger side drive axles line up with the center point of the frame that supports the landing gear. "looking under the trailer" I point out reference points in the video as to where the tires cross the lines. The right side trailer and the left side of the tractor. These are reference points that indicate the points to turn. I narrate all of the instructions in my other video "Conventional parallel park" I think you should watch. Thanks and good luck!

    Looked like a Parallel Park instead of an Offset.

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  5 месяцев назад

      It resembles a Parallel park exactly with a couple of differences. You have a longer 100' lane to back into which I feel gives you an advantage and there is a Stop box in the rear. Very easy to do as long as you don't overshoot it. If you do just pull up and finish in the box. Thanks for the comment!

    Why is there a limit on pull ups? Have you ever been to a customer's dock with a trailer full of freight and had them come out after two pull ups and say, "Sorry, you've reached your pull up limit. Take the freight back to where it came from"?

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  Месяц назад

      You’re not limited to two pull ups. The first two are free with no points accessed and then after you’ve taken the two free pull ups you’re then scored accordingly to how many more times you need to pull up in order to complete the exercise. Obviously you’re not allowed to make an unlimited number of corrections because you must prove your skills. This is a test and the same as any test you need to be proficient before you’re licensed to go make actual deliveries. Best of luck!

      @@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest I get that, but when you're brand new you should be able to make 5 or 6 if need be. As long as you're operating the vehicle safely, that's all that should matter. Speed comes with time.

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest  21 день назад

      @@user-zr6pl6nb6z You can take 5 or 6 if you need to. The pull-ups are the least amount of penalty points and all total, after the first two free pull-ups you can take several more in order to do this maneuver and pass. The encroachments are what you want to avoid because they carry a higher point value.

      Yes, very similar but when you look at the CDL drivers handbook in section 12 the name is Reverse Offset Backing. The video makes reference to the Book. The procedures are like the parallel park but with an additional space. For example this is 100’ lane where as the parallel park is the length of your truck plus an additional 15 feet, which in most cases would be approximately 80’ Thank you for the comment.
