Thanks to your video Trucker Steve, I passed my skills test today!! ( as well as my air brakes, in cab and pre trip) I would like to personally thank you for knowledge and skills!! During my reverse off set backing at the CDL DMV, I encountered the same issue I had in my trucking school ( San Diego, CA) my trailer was to far in the box. I passed my exam. I didn't use any pull-ups. Instead of using a pull-up, I reversed and steered to adjust the direction of my trailer. It was risky, but I still managed to get pretty close to the cone in the back, and I was also inside the boundary lines and backed up into the box. I had to use both of my get out and looks. I measured the distance using my feet. Passed the pre-trip, railroad crossing, driving, and emergency stop, too. It was easy. Thanks, man.

Was your right back tire pass that first cone before you starter to make a right. Its like now im right on top of my left cone after i make that right or far from it i need to be able to see my left cone any advice what you think im doing wrong
Have quite a few videos on the new CDL Skills. Once you understand how to maneuver the trailer ( making the trailer go where YOU want it to go ) you will get it in every time. Even with a poor setup, you will fix it and into the alley you will go! A good setup, the right side of the tractor trailer will be about 1 yard From the top cone as you enter into the alley. Practice as much as possible - to the point where you become the boss of your trailer. It’s okay to screw up at times - when this happens, ask yourself - What did I do wrong? And make the right decision next time.
You keep saying yards " centered in the box with 1 yard on each side" 1 yard on each side is 6ft total that doesn't leave any room ror the width of the truck and trailer in a 12 ft wide box . Do you mean 1 ft on each side
@@zionhanson1830 tractor trailers are about 8 feet wide. It’s a little less than one yard. 2 1/2 feet on each side. Like football On the one yard line. Good point.
Thanks for the demonstration. I am learning to get the License now. I have a question. I see you did dry steering (truck stop and you turn the wheel to left or right) 2 times, normal steering (truck rolling and you turn the wheel to left or right) 2 time. I see from the other driver's demonstration, some of them do dry steering also. I don’t know if it is the only option or doesn't matter. Usually, dry steering can damage the steering system and tires a lot. please let me know if you can.
I hope ASAP, my students will learn to react to the trailer and make the proper turns. You are right, stopping and turning the steering wheel can overheat the steering gear box. Many of my students never stop- so much easier to steer. Thank you for your comments.
Hey trucker steve im good with all the steps except knowing how far to go left/right when coming out of the cones to line myself up straight to begin backing back in
Several videos on my channel about this question. First when pulling out of the alley you need to clear the cone bottom left. ( should be where the hash marks start). Next as you are pulling out to the left ( about 10 feet). If you’re mirror is properly positioned you will see the cone and the hash mark. ( the hash mark and cone where your right rear trailer tire will go between). When you see this, start steering to the right and make sure to clear the right cone but keep close to it. If you can see the cone and hash mark you should never hit what you can SEE. If needed make a slight adjustment but stay close. It should be 3 to 4 feet between the cone and the hash mark. Did I confuse you? Do you understand what I am saying? Have you viewed all of my videos on this? Click onto videos on my channel. Hopefully this is of some help.
@@truckerstevecdlinstructor so after my trailer tires completely clear the striped cone on the drivers side then i should be able to see the cone and hash mark on the right side? Must clear the cone on the left. Then start back to the right. When you clear the cone coming out of the alley, you are out of the alley and can start coming back to the right. You will see the cone and hash mark. Now if needed you can make any adjustments so not to hit the cone and stay in between the cone and hash mark. This is not a hard skill to do as long as you practice it several times.
Just wanted to add this: when you clear the cone on the left, check your right mirror to make sure you are out of the alley. When the trailer is out of the alley come back to the right between the cone and the hash mark

Thank you for your comment. Your final get out and look should be to make sure your tractor and trailer is completely in the alley. Check the right and left side make sure the tractor steering wheels are inside the boundary lines ( in the alley). One student used his get out and look to make sure he was in the box ( back bumper). Got back into the tractor and sounded the horn for the final position. Fail the test because his left tire was on the left line.
