Some students I have them do the set up. Back up to the first strip cone. But not into the alley. Then the students pull up and once again backs up to the cone. We do this several times until the students know how to back and make any needed adjustments. Then we start backing into the alley. With a good set up, this skill becomes easier. So I brake down the training in two parts for those who need this.

Steve, this is incredible. Just... wow. I need to keep re-watching it several times to internalize everything, but this is exactly what I needed. I had a rough 1on1 today on offset parking. My instructor was an excellent driver, but a poor instructor unfortunately. Fortunately, I recognized HIS strengths and asked him to physically demonstrate while I stood outside the vehicle and got to see everything he could see when he was standing in our lot while he was instructing me. He was awesome at doing it and I tried to absorb everything I saw since I couldn't rely on him explaining things well verbally. Every class I get someone different out of the 6 instructors that teach tractor trailer maneuvers. Hopefully, him and I learned something today to help us both perform better the next time we get paired together. Thanks for the videos and your time.

I like my students to stand in front on the tractor trailer as it moves backwards. Every time the trailer moves left or right, say to your self “where would I Turn the steering wheels “. On the video, same - the trailer drifts to the left- where would you turn the steering wheel to stop the drift?

Five points if not in the box- test one. Five points in you fail to have your right rear trailer tires between the cone and hash mark.
You cannot have your butt off the driver seat. You can look out the left mirror as long as you don’t come out of your seat. Are you testing at your CDL school or at the DMV (MVA)? Know the distance from your bumper to your left mirror or center of the left tractor window. Now you have a reference point- knowing when you need to stop.

In California the school is telling us that in off-set forward at least one of the trailer right dual tires "must" roll over the mark (touch the mark) that is about 4ft off the cone, otherwise is a failure. In internet everybody is saying that the trailer right tires should roll between the cone and the mark. The modernized standart exams will kick in here next week, not sure if the school is wrong or right about rolling at least one of the dual tires over that mark. Has anyone here seen these new skill requirements at your local DMV ? @@truckerstevecdlinstructor

There’s an easier method for the reverse offset, based on the way i’m learning.

When the new test is in all states. The reverse offset is a blind side parallel park. I have my students back to the first cone then back it in. Blind side but more space than the old test.

@truckerstevecdlinstructor Some of these schools in Virginia need to be looked at because of their practices. I took test today, aced my pre trip, straight line and offset and school instructor failed me with my whole truck being inside of box for parallel. His reason was he felt he couldn't see whole truck straight down the driver's side and if he felt it was questionable, he could fail me. So had to pay $135 to retest on Friday. I was not going to argue or challenge him because he will be testing me again. This whole school has been a scam and take advantage of getting the most money out of folks. I was very upset. I already have my Class B and drive trucks for a living. I have went along with their program because I did not want to loose money in spite of not understanding a word they are saying being foreigners. There is no structure or anything. As students we have had to learn from one another but DMV has sanctioned them to be a 3rd party tester. Really sad
