  • It finally happened. David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan are going to play Superman and Lois Lane in James Gunn's Superman Legacy. And I think that's okay.

Casting a relative unknown, smaller actor is a MUCH smarter move than casting an A-lister. All some people would be able to see is an actor they know in a costume, but Coresnswet can make us see him AS Superman (just like what happened with Reeve and Cavill)

    • @appl3s0ft

To think that James Gunn wanted to cast someone you could really look at and wanna give a hug - just have him enter a room and you immediately feel safe and at ease, and at the same time have that someone be relatively unknown, is perhaps one of the hardest things to nail. And that fact that the vast majority is very excited for this choice is a testament that James Gunn really knows what he’s doing.
And you’re absolutely right - while for a moment I was convinced Nicholas Hoult would have been good, it’d be hard to separate actor from character. I would only see Nicholas Hoult in a Superman outfit. With David, I know next to nothing about him, and it’ll be much easier to see him disappear into the role of Superman. Really gives that illusion that he is the alien that looks like one of us, that we don’t much about, and yet somehow we feel safe and at peace with him around.
Sorry. Tangent. I’m just excited :)

    1) I'm really happy about the casting announcements
    2) I'm really, really happy about Rachel Brosnahan. Honestly might be one of the most exciting castings I can think of in the last few years. I could easily see Lois Lane as someone who is more aware of a situation than they may let on (best analogy would be someone like the 11th doctor)
    3) Even though he didn't do Supes, I really want to see Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult do some sort of movie together. The two feel like they'd play off each other well and I want the vibes there.

God if not Lex, but if Nicholas Hoult landed the DCU's Batman. I think what you said about him playing off Rachel could still work really well. Imagine his Bruce in his playboy-ness getting flirty with Lois and then you have Clark getting jealous of that.

There aren't a whole lot of characters I'd say this for, but...I kind of think Lex being a white guy is somewhat important. Metanarratively, Superman is an immigrant. Metanarratively, Lex Luthor is Donald Trump. Pretty close to literally. The modern version of Lex (the businessman) that's been around since the John Byrne run in the '80s and carried over into the animated series, was conceived as a direct and pointed satire of Donald Trump.
If they were to cast Leslie Odom Jr., or really any minority actor, in that specific role, that adds a layer of irony to the character that isn't there otherwise. It's irony that can be utilized, and I'm not saying I'm 100% against it, Leslie Odom Jr. is great and he'd probably bring a lot to it, but how it contextualizes the character to cast a minority actor is something to consider.
And I say this as someone who would be completely on board with Clark being black, Jimmy being trans, Lois being Asian, whatever, that wouldn't fundamentally change who those characters are and their roles in relation to each other. With Lex, making him a minority does change the character, specifically because he's a privileged xenophobe.

i think that with the present state of the dcu, they will play safe the first movies that james produce, so im expecting a all white cast for the first two film they drop. Also, in my mind, lex luthor represents the american billionare, and nowadays those guys are pretty much supervillains in real life, and theyr all white, also the fact that superman is a inmigrant allegory and that makes lex being a white guy more important. So yeah, lets keep him white, as much as i love diversity

    • @uhwaykin
      @uhwaykin Год назад +1

@@Swenglish I think that's great analysis, and I only half agree with most of it.
Lex's post-Crisis characterization is heavily inspired by the cartoonish greed, ego, and ultimate impotence of Trump (as well as Ted Turner and Howard Hughes), but he is not directly Trump. Metanarratively, Luthor is just a robber baron capitalist and his xenophobic opposition to the metanarrative immigrant is a component of that. You're 1000% right that presenting these qualities in the context of a non-white character presents a ton of complications, but I don't think any of them are completely unmanageable. Lex's post-Crisis characterization is one of a billionaire xenophobic megalomaniac, but one with a massive chip on his shoulder that made his fortune out of nothing but his ruthless genius, who resents Superman for being everything he can't as much as for being from another world. I think a black Lex as a scorned son of Metropolis, a genius that took everything he felt society tried to deny him and fought his way to the heights of power, only to find himself in the shadow of a man whose greatness he perceives as ordained, unearned, and completely impossible for him to attain is incredibly fertile ground.
It's funny you say you'd be completely on board with a black Clark, because I think that would actually be so much harder to do. Clark's experience of America growing up and the American public's response to him would be fundamentally different if he were black, even if he ended up with the exact same morals and beliefs as the traditionally white Clark. I would be SUPER interested in exploring those ideas, but I can't imagine a world where Warner Brothers makes a good movie from them.

The Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League game from what we've seen of the city looks amazing so I'd love to see something like that translated into live action. The thing to remember about Mrs Maisel's stand up. Because it's set so long ago, it's gonna feel a little dated. The audience in that show reacts because other than Lenny Bruce, it's something they've never heard before in the 40s or 50s. Especially from a female performer. Obviously we've seen that sort of thing before.. So of course it's not going to feel the same for us. The fact that it's a period piece negates that for me though. A bit about the Superman casting being the "expected" choice.
It kind of ties in to what I'm personally hoping for with this new Superman movie, which is that I kind of want it to be... predictable? Standard? I think a lot of people, myself included, are tired of subversions of expectation, especially when the subversion is expected to be the norm and also less interesting than the expected.
Overly Sarcastic Productions has a great video on Superman that I think really nailed home what makes Superman "work" in a story, and why so many writers are working against themselves when trying to write him. It's a long video, but my favorite quote from it is something along the lines of "Superman isn't the ultimate warrior, he's the ultimate firefighter". It's said as part of a point being made about why Superman fights are almost always super boring and, more importantly, not the most effective use of his character.
I want a Superman movie that is unapologetically, uncynically hopeful, heroic, and happy. Side-note, here's my pitch for a teaser trailer:
    - - -
A busy street in Metropolis. A crowd of people are gathered in front of a burning building, shouts and gasps of worry and horror. We push in on a person turning away from the crowd, looking up into the sky and squinting:
"What is that?" he asks out loud.
More people start turning around to look. One of them ponders:
    "Is it a bird?"
    Another person scoffs and goes:
"No, it looks more like a plane."
We slowly zoom in on a child in the crowd. A smile slowly spreads across their face. They take a breath, preparing to say something.
Smash cut to the title reveal:
    SUPERMAN

When I heard he auditioned for Batman I actually thought he'd make a good Riddler kind of in the vein of his character from Skin, I think that would have been a unique take on the character, a weirdly sexy, charming but with a slightly off-unhinged maniacal feel.

From what I know so far, these two leads seem great. Excited to see how they play the characters.
For Nicholas Hoult, I don't really want to see him play one of the main heroes since he's already played a major hero in the X-Men. I think he could be really fun as a villain such as the Riddler who comes across as really clever but also on the verge of losing it and has some big scenery-chewing moments.

I can keep thinking that this announcement could further damage the box office futures of Blue Beetle and Aquaman 2. Regardless, I like this casting, and I look forward to whoever gets cast as Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, Ma & Pa Kent, Jor-el & Lara, and if they’ll bring in Lana Lang and Pete Ross.

I'm not following how Pratt and RDJ are at all similar situations. Pratt was an unusual pick where we didn't know quite why he suited the vision for the character until we started seeing footage. RDJ was, at least on the Ain't It Cool News forums where I followed movie news back in the day, painfully obvious on the same level as casting Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier. He looked the part. He had the charm and swagger, but he could also be sympathetic. He was, forgive me, kind of a mess for part of his life due in part to a substance abuse problem. I knew from day one he was the right guy for the role, right along with a lot of others on AICN. The only surprise, frankly, was how popular he ended up being with general audiences.

Im still holding out for a Jensen Ackles Batman. I know, i know, its the popular fancast that everyone rolls their eyes about but i really think he would do a great job. Gunn has already said he wanted voice roles for animation to cross over with live action and Jensen Ackles already has been the voice of Batman in multiple projects. He is a phenomenal actor and if theyre going for a Batman that already has not just Damien, but Dick, Jason, and Tim as well then he's a good pick for an older but not too old Batman.

Even if they go for an older Batman, I would never want whoever they cast as Nightwing to be older than their casting for Superman. It would just feel off.
I would hope that the plan is for someone in their late 30s early 40s for Bruce - realistic enough to be the father to a 10 year old - with Dick around 18-20 years old so he’d feel more properly like an older brother to a 10 year old Damian rather than just another adult figure in his life. Then Jason, Tim, and the rest of the Bat family would fit in between those two ages.
