    This is by far the best looking "ugly" I've seen. That bottom vent is an incredible idea. Thanks heaps for the video. I'll definitely be watching this again and again as I build my own.

    like that you started with a new barrel. i’ve seen so many grills made with bent up, rusted messes and so much time and nice hardware on it to justify. painting it every few years and sandblasting will help it last longer. nice job!

    Nice build! You definitely put a lot of thought into it.. I'm looking into building my own and doing lots of research. I've got a barrel of unknown origin, but it's in good shape. Light coat of rust inside, no oily residue, matching lid. Paint is faded on outside but after a good hot burning to remove any possible chemicals it'll likely burn off the paint then I can sand and repaint with hi-temp stuff. I plan to cut the intake hole in the bottom for the burn in so it'll help get it nice and hot. Might even hook a pipe up to the leaf blower or shop vac to force air in for the initial burn. Since I don't know the history of the drum I want to burn it as hot and long as i can so nothing will come off during cooking later on. I am keeping an eye out for food grade barrels too. I have a feeling I might make a second one if I like the first one a lot, LOL.
    Anyway I'm seriously looking at the Big Poppa Smoker kit for the first build, but thinking of substituting out the sliding side intakes for upright intakes so I don't have to bend over every time I need to adjust the temperature/vents. Your bottom vent is a cool idea. Also dig your wheel and tripod style base. Makes it easy to move around. Thanks for sharing your build. Let us know how your food cooks in it.

  • @jonathanbushnell1147
    @jonathanbushnell1147 6 лет назад +1

    This is really nice. 2 questions - 1) why did you choose a bike peg for stabilization? Do they have some give? 2) Is there a reason you put the handle opposite the wheel side? I was assuming I would put it on the on the side with the wheels to make rolling easier.
    Again, beautiful work. Hoping mine turns out half as good.

    • @MidwestFreak
      @MidwestFreak  6 лет назад

      I used the bike peg because with the wheels it set perfectly level and got 20 of them just collecting dust that the kids took off their bikes . the reason for putting the handle on the front is to be able to lift the peg off the ground and steer the drum like a dolly . putting it on the side you would not be lifting the drum unevenly and you could put it on the side but would not work for me that way .

      If you have a sealed drum, get hold of an angle grinder. Tip the wheel about 30 degrees inside the lip and gently grind down to the seal all the way round. A sharp smack with a hammer, and it’ll drop into the drum leaving a nice neat even open top, with the rim still intact to seal nicely with an old Webber lid.
