  • Here's an initial walk around and commentary on my new Ugly Drum Smoker build. I have included my bill of materials here along with my approximate costs...
    #UDS #UglyDrumSmoker
    Craigslist Drum: $40.00
    UDSPARTS.COM Charcoal Basket: $67.00
    UDSPARTS.COM Lid Handle: $20.00
    UDSPARTS.COM Exhaust Stack: $14.00
    UDSPARTS.COM Shipping: $20.00
    Weber Grill Grate: $20.00
    Primer: $20.00
    Paint: $12.00
    Paint Stripper: $15.00
    Lower Intake Vent: $0.00
    Stainless Steel Nuts/Bolts/Hardware: $30.00
    Roughly $280 (not including the hinge I ended up not using)
    The $100 custom grill grate I ordered from The Burn Shop (theburnshopwf.com) I am not counting here because I would normally have just bought a second $20 weber grate for this.)

    Great info for any one looking to build a UDS. Like your usual videos you do a great job of making things clear that otherwise may be confusing.. Yes lets see a cook.

      Thanks :) I hope to do a cook this coming week. I'm waiting for that custom grill grate I ordered to arrive so I can season that because I wanna use it on the first cook...

    Can't believe I'm just finally finding your channel. Heard Rus Jones mention you in a video of his that is years old. Love what you're doing! Very cool channel.

    Ya think with more lower vents would make a more even fire? Nice man. You are a perfectionist. Thanks

    Your usual REALLY good work. Very thorough, but not excessive. I love how you always find that balance. I wonder if you could mod this drum to behave like a pit barrel cooker and hang some meat in there. Like the others, I’m looking forward to your next video where you use it!

    • @ManCaveMeals
      @ManCaveMeals  5 лет назад

      Elliott and Shelley Carman yes.. there is an inexpensive mod available to do that. I might add it on at some point

    if you weld in 24" closet brackets instead if installing bolts it becomes totally adjustable

    For the charcoal basket part. I just use a spare weber bottom part that hold the charcoal n just put in my drum. Save money

  • @alanrathbun6424
    @alanrathbun6424 4 года назад

    You could always raise your coal basket up on bricks or a cement block to use it as a grill. This would put your coals at about the same depth as a Weber grill...

    That plug is used for extension cords, or electric cords.

    This is great. Reminds me of content back in the early days of MCM’s. Nice build, John. Do you think it needs feet to protect your deck?
    Can wait for the first cook!

    • @ManCaveMeals
      @ManCaveMeals  5 лет назад

      I am not gonna put feet on it. I have pavers if I wanna use it on the deck and I will set it on concrete otherwise...

    Hey there Mr John, i had a question a bout a drum I recently pick up that was used for coolant, and it has a sealed lid, do you by chance have any suggestions for getting the lid off safely?

    • @ManCaveMeals
      @ManCaveMeals  4 года назад

      Wouldn't have a clue unless its just bolted on like most of them with a band.

    • @eagleeyeradio5247

      dat guy slick if you take a cutoff wheel and go around the outside of the lip, the lid will eventually pop off

    • @MrBoxing85
      @MrBoxing85 3 года назад

      @@eagleeyeradio5247 thank so much, would you be chance have any idea if it would be safe for bbq after a burn out process?

    • @capnrob97
      @capnrob97 2 года назад

      old question, I know, but for others reading this. You should fill up the barrel with water first to drive out any potentially explosive fumes before cutting the top off. They have exploded before with sparks flying when cutting.

    That drum has a liner to keep it from rusting or there would have been some rust, it has a liner to keep it from rusting. I had mine Sam blasted to remove it. Trust me that steel you think you saw was a liner, not a food grade liner but a liner just the same

    Bloody murder, I spent 80 cents building mine after a weber was given to me. I didn't spend $300 on my 200 gallon reverse flow smoker.

    Food-grade liners aren’t food grade at ANY temperature….
