Very cool Lew .thanks for showing the work it took to build this UDS. I have a story bout my #14 which came yesterday. I also got the long legs both shipped from the Houston store .well somehow the coal plate was rolled into the top half and could not be removed .I contacted Old Smokey customer service they have never seen this happen.i sent pics It was part of the top lid They had me try a couple of things to no avail. They had Bryan contact me this morning and are sending me a new top and coal plate .i asked if i could add a thermometer and lid holder which i would pay for and shiplin. Bryan said Nope we will send all 4 pieces no charge for your inconvenience of a manufacturer issue How wonderful is that ? I remember you saying their customer service was Good. I may have to a few days for my first cook ( ribs ) But im very impressed by how they are taking care of me n my issue. This is the type thing that keeps people coming back Old Smokey Co. Rocks 👍🏻 I thought you'd get a kick out of hearing bout it. It was you that git me to order in first place . I told him you were their best advertiser .👍🏻 Be well Sir .
Ric’s BBQ & Specialties Gracias hermano, As you may know. This is the same video I released last Friday. I found some errors in it that I wanted to correct so I changed the first four minutes. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful new cooker and great work, Big Lew! I’d love to have one of those. Not sure I could handle assembly. When it comes to that, I AM inept lol. Cheers 🍻
Well thanks very much for that demonstration. You know that black and yellow smoker would look much better with some Steelmark logos😃. Thanks for sharing.
@@damagedave Thanks! A long time ago UDS stood for Upright Drum Smoker, as opposed to a horizontal barrel grill or off-set. Ugly was derogatory term that became a honor for UDS builders.
I would say not. Could you make them work? Maybe. But the hardware supplied is made for a steel drum (super thin metal) and I dunno what would be required to keep the barrel from burning down. You'd need fire brick or something to line the bottom
wade mcclure the color is Caterpillar Yellow. The same color as the heavy equipment manufacturer. Craig’s list and Facebook market place is my best advice to find a drum., Do you know anyone who works in a warehouse, or at a port or docks or any industry that might have access to drums? Liners can be removed, it is not real easy but it can be done.
Thanks Big Lew BBQ. I’ve been researching UDS builds. Plan on using parts from UDS Parts. This was a good vid on how to build. Subscribed & set notifications. Just got a used 55-gallon drum. Just waiting to order parts. The assembly is straightforward and simple. I’m concerned about the painting process. I did hear you say you used a high heat primer and 2-3 coats, what brand of paint did you use, and could you please explain in brief steps the procedure. Thanks so much. This will be my first UDS build.
Norman Ham I really enjoy both of my UDS’s. Thank you for subbing. I won’t be making any more videos for the next month or so, maybe even longer. I do hope to return to video making when I can.
Thank you. They are fun to build. The first one built was with all hardware store parts. This one with the kit was easy. Making them is a good weekend project.
@@BigLewBBQ 10 minutes after I asked this question I went to one of your later videos discussing your wife’s death. I felt bad asking a mundane question about paint . I pray you and your kids are doing well. Then again, maybe the real unimportant topics help from time to time. Either way, take care .
The primer was high temp. The paint is not but it is a tough paint. It is Truck, Tractor, and Farm implement paint. Caterpillar yellow color. It has held up very well since I did this smoker over a year ago.
Thanks for the quick reply. I was wondering if I used the high temp primer, could I apply a different or regular spray paint to broaden my color selection. I did notice that there is a high temp clear coat. Thanks again, very helpful..
Fabulous product! Thanks for this great video. Big Lew BBQ Rocks!
Nothing ugly about that smoker. You made a real piece of art.Great video😎👍
That’s Awesome Big Lew! Nice Build! Congrats on the new Cooker!

I guess I need to look up what “ugly” means. That’s beautiful

Great job Big Lew! Well explained and a lot of little helpful tips. When are you installing the radio?? LOL! Take care bud!
BIG LEW!! Would these parts work with a wine or whiskey barral? Would you build one and make a video?
The answer to both questions is, I don’t know.
I would say not. Could you make them work? Maybe. But the hardware supplied is made for a steel drum (super thin metal) and I dunno what would be required to keep the barrel from burning down. You'd need fire brick or something to line the bottom
what about using a big C clamp to squeeze on the caps?
Great job! What color do you call that? Also any ideas where I can find a drum to use? Been looking on Craigslist, OfferUp....all seem to have a liner

Nice build. I know the one I'm getting is by definition ugly rust colored.
Thank you. They are fun to build. The first one built was with all hardware store parts. This one with the kit was easy. Making them is a good weekend project.
Very nice. What type of paint did you use? It looks great. High temp primer, height temp paint ?
High temp primer, and Farm, Truck & Tractor paint in Caterpillar Yellow. The black accessory items are painted with rustoleum high temp grill paint.

Is the yellow paint a high temp paint or just the primer???

Jason Patton yes, but I do have some catfish videos , but not any real catch clean and cook. The catfish videos are in this play list.
