- Comparing the Supermarine Spitfire Mk XVI against the Messerschmitt Me 262 flying at the same airshow. Looking at both Warbirds at a technical point of view.
oh god that scrolling text was annoying
I just Googled ...the engines are GE CJ-610...!!!
I'd rather trust my lives to those rather than the Junkers 004s -10-12hr life spans? Flame-outs almost guaranteed? Pass.
@@davidhobbs8949 I heard that the average lifetime of a Jumo 004 turbine was about 25 hours back then, and that German pilots sometimes had the bad feeling that their engines had used up already 24 hours of these...
Two wonderful aircraft!
Thanks for your lovely comment Margaret
All the WW2 aircraft command respect, but the ME-262s were/are some of the sexiest and most bad@$$ airplanes ever built even today they look modern and advanced considering they're almost 80 years old, could you imagine encountering that beast out of the blue during battle, there isnt a word to use for what allied pilots must have thought and fealt after witnessing that killer for the 1st time it screaming through the air blasting its 2 20mm nose cannons and its 4 30mm wing mounted cannons, even the pilot who was able to shoot 1 down in flight will tell you it took a considerable amount of luck plus skill to hit 1
1:13 Wing tips are fluttering, aren't they?
No, it’s the camera. You can see the effect in both planes when the wings are close to the edge of your screen. But I did see what you’re referring to.
@@6thmichcav262 I guess you're right. I now also see Me 262 wings wobbling quite a bit at 2:35.
They didn't list the climb rate of the Spit, but I would venture to guess this version had a higher rate of climb than the 262...the 262 didn't climb all that well for a jet...
Rate of Climb: Spitfire wins: 4,745 ft/min over Me 262 with 3900 ft/min
Some versions of the Spit had a ROC of over 5000 ft/min...
@@Warbirds
Spitfire LF Mk IX had a best climb rate of 4,700 ft/min in 1942, but it was up to 5,080 ft/min by early 1943 and they managed as much as 5,700 ft/min, the Mk XVI is a LF Mk IX with the Packard version of the Rolls Royce Merlin 66 engine.
@David Olsson
Entered service after the Gloster Meteor.
@David Olsson
Except it was only in a training and experimental squadron when the Gloster Meteor was operational.
When does your comparison start?
Messerschmitt was fastest
it was the one and only jet in WW2
@@Warbirds Apart from the other ww2 jet fighter, the Meteor.
@@alanbooker LoL i allways can laught loud about comments like this... meteor over deutschland in ww2
No. 616 Squadron RAF was the first who has had 14 jets in july 44 and it was forbidden from RAF until april´45 to fly over to germany.
februar 45 the first 4 metteors in europe was station in Melsbroeck belgium.three weeks later the meteor was destroyes in
unternehmen bodenplatte from Jagdgeschwader 27 + JG54. that was the first combat they see... (but i think on ground destoyed to be fair.)
april´44 at end of war, they was station at Faßberg germany where two meteors collide in bad weather, finally
the meteors destroy 46 german aircraft ON GROUND ATTAK!
but what they did was bring down 14piece V1 (Fieseler Fi103) over the kingdom before they impact in shedule.
there was a story about a comet they forced a fieseler storch for a crashlanding... late april 44
to stay with facts read it here: meteor: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloster_Meteor --- ME262: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messerschmitt_Me_262
fieseler story: www.neam.co.uk/meteor.html
and last but not least the best story in short:
On 17. April 1945 they were finally allowed to enter enemy territory, but only two encounters took place with the Luftwaffe. One was when a single Meteor encountered a Fieseler Storch, which managed to force-land before being destroyed by the Meteor on the ground. The other was a potential encounter with several Focke-Wulf 190s, which was cut short when some Spitfires and Hurricanes appeared on the scene - cut short because the Spitfires and Hurricanes opened fire on the Meteors thinking they were Messerschmitt 262s.
produced:1368 - deliverd to luftwaffe 1038 - destroyed by allies 232 very often in landing and take off.... 542 allies planes was destroyed by ME262 jets.
and even good to know there was never more than 100 aircraft at same day ready for combat over complete germany...
imagine that 100 against thousands of bombers and fighters ...
On 18 March 1945, only 37 Me 262s of JG 7 intercepted a force of 1,221 bombers and 632 escorting fighters. They shot down 12 bombers and one fighter for the loss of three Me 262s.
here more to read.... www.2worldwar2.com/me-262.htm
lean back an be relax .. in europan ww2 theatre the ME262 was the only jet with air victorys.
there is not much to be proud of ww2 if u are a german .. but the pilots for shure...
@@urbansoldier1 "it was the one and only jet in WW2" were your words.
@@Warbirds Also the Arado Ar 234 twin jet
Wondering who will win -_-
I guarantee you that the 262 flying today is not powered by the very unreliable Jumo engine..!!!
No not anymore
Here's one who power by original Jumo engines :D ruclips.net/video/8Azxzu1sqCU/видео.html
@@gr-s2143 who cares about British planes they’ve always been second to Germany. British needed 150 octanes because their technology was weak and slow.
@@garyseeseverything8615 Don't cry kid, the spit was almost always better than your deified 109, especially the later variants😘
And they didn't needed, but thyed had, not like the germans😉
@@nothing4381 absolutely the RAF needed 150 octanes the Merlin engine was small compared to a German db601 only take 30 seconds to look up. The bf109k4 and k14 were power fighters whereas the spitfire fat wings cause the plane to bleed off too much in a dog fight.
just so good to see them in the air!
There's no better sound than the Rolls Royce Merlin engine...
Merlin sound like crap compared to the larger db601.
@@garyseeseverything8615 Both songs beautiful, but you a fkin troll...
Didn’t the supermarine spitfire have a Griffon engine?
Wenn man sieht, wie sanft die Me 262 doch fliegt, kann man Adolf Galand's Ausspruch "Es ist als wenn ein Engel schiebt" nach einen Testflug mit so einer Maschine wirklich verstehen.
Amazing, what a combination of planes. Never saw video of this before. Thanks for sharing. And don't do the scrolling text again.
Hahnweide?
Czechoslovakian emblem on the Spitfire :-)
@War Child Emblem under the cabin is Czechoslovakian. (Blue, red, white in the wheel). In World War II, Czechoslovak pilots also fought in Britain.
@@pavelkocman462
Not just in the Battle of Britain but right through the war.
There no comparison here the Bf109 reigned supreme in Europe it began the mono wing fighter era in Spain and the new era of aviation began with the Me262. Spitfire were carburetors basically outdated tech all around.
Outdated tech,heh ?
From the mk.9 the 109 was not an enemy...
@@nothing4381 the spitfire wasn’t the best prop plane of ww2 that title goes to the me109 with the highest scoring aces in history.
@@garyseeseverything8615 Not the bf 109 was the highest scored, but their pilots.
One thing the pilot, and another the plane...
Everyone knows that the german pilots were the best trained, but by the end of the war the 109 was outdated by some tougher fighter.
focker 109 was the ducks nuts at low to mid altitude and the best armed i agree spitfire over rated.
Spitfire 0, Me262 max
Theres only one thing wrong with this ridiculous Dog Fight The Spitfire would never have got anywhere near The Schwalbe a P51 D Mustang A Griffon Powered Spitfire or even a Mosquito sure
262 😗🤌
El mejor avión de combate

You cant compare a bicycle to a Porsche...
All the griffon spits could out climb it and the piston engine is accelerate way faster...
Not to mention that the late spits were used right until the '60s...
@@nothing4381 stop your foolish comments nobody cares about the spitfire when comparing to me262 jets.
@@garyseeseverything8615 Well, the first plane that shoted down an me262 was a spitfire, but don't cry kid
@@nothing4381 dude when you have hundreds of spitfires produced with American resources and you have the 8th Air Force carpet bombing Germany you can only build so many me262. America was happy to lend all that material with interest the spitfire used 150 octanes because it was basically a slow plane it bleed to much speed in a turn because of the bomber type wing taken from Heinkel company of Germany
