I'm doing a couple special Spyderco builds this year in black, and I'm planning on getting the blades mirror polished, then sending them in to a place that will DLC coat them for me. I sharpen knives profesionaly, since the early 90's. No factory edge should be used, no factory edge comes "Scary Sharp" (not even close to a razor's edge). All factory edges must be sharpened (before use) or even better reprofiled too, to remove any "burnt" steel that can cause failures (chips/rolls even with light use) as also, to enhance the performance of the blade, to where it should be at. Edge retention and toughness, as also cutting ability, increases 3 times at least, after a proper reprofiling (to a slight convex edge bevel) and 2 or 3 full sharpening sessions, to remove any burnt steel.
