    There is a behind the scenes reason for Jeff going to Minbar and it's actually quite a sad story. Michael O'Hare was getting quite unwell towards the midpoint of the season, something that only the creator noticed as he has a background in psychology. O'Hare wanted to see out the season to prevent other people losing their jobs and Joe Straczinsky agreed as long as he got help after it was done. JMS swore to keep the story secret for life but O'Hare said to keep it a secret until he died. He wanted to make sure others knew the story after his own passing to shine a light on mental health issues.

    • @cthulhucollector
      @cthulhucollector Год назад +6

      JMS even offered to hold off for a bit in filming to give him time to get some help.

    • @SpockvsEgon
      @SpockvsEgon Год назад +6

      I wouldn't say JMS is the only one who noticed. However, he was the only one who accurately assessed the situation. On his radio show, Jerry Doyle described O'Hare as acting erratic and paranoid. Like there was a morning when Doyle bought everyone breakfast, and O'Hare got offended saying, "You won't control me!" Or another time Doyle drove O'Hare somewhere and O'Hare declared that he didn't wish to speak. Doyle asked if he was mad at him and O'Hare replied, "You talk. I'll listen." Which confused Doyle horribly. In her memoir, Claudia Christian said that O'Hare would try to puff himself up in shots to edge her out of the frame and that he would talk inappropriately to the female PAs. She didn't know about his mental health issues and thought he had been fired for sexual harassment. When asked about him in a fan Q & A for the 20th anniversary, Peter Jurasik simply said, "He had that role of Commander a lot longer than he should have."
      It makes me sad. I loved Jeff Sinclair as a kid. More than any other character in movies, television, or books, I wanted to be him. The warm moments between Sinclair and Garibaldi or Sinclair and Ivanova felt so real, but evidently, they were completely fake.

    Hi mate I know you've been a massive fan of Sinclair in season 1. But honestly I guarantee you that Sheridan will grow on you.
    If nobody has told you yet the reason Sinclair was removed as a character in B5 was that Michael O'Hare had been suffering a debilitating psychiatric condition during the filming of the first season. He had good days and bad days, but getting the full medical treatment he needed would take much longer than the relatively brief hiatus between seasons. Straczynski offered to shut down production of the series so O'Hare could get the treatment he needed, but O'Hare refused to put the jobs of the hundreds of people involved in the making of the series at risk.
    So O'Hare agreed to leave the show.
    The truth of this only came out after O'Hare's death as JMS kept O'Hare's issues private. Not even the rest of the cast and crew knew exactly what had gone on with Michael O'Hare as JMS had agreed to keep it private.
    JMS promised to take O'Hare's secret to the grave but O'Hare told him at the time that if he passed away before JMS that JMS could tell the story.
    JMS honoured O'Hare's wishes and didn't disclose the full story until after Michael O'Hare passed away.

    Will have to wait to see your take on Sheridan, but just know, give him time. He's different from Sinclair, but also very good in his own different way. For Sinclair fans, it is a big shock, but the change was needed for the sake of Michael O'Hare who was going through all kinds of issues and needed to get care for himself. JMS continued to give support to O'Hare after he was no longer on the show, at least at this point (won't spoil anything and say if it is temporary or not); JMS revealed the whole situation after O'Hare's death, at the behest of O'Hare.

    Yeah, as much as everyone was sad to see Sinclair go, Sheridan remains one on the best commanders ever put on screen. Interestingly enough, it ended up fitting thematically very well. The time of philosophical idealists has passed with the first season, with the galaxy heading straight into war Sheridan's tactical genius and practical and devious diplomacy are going to carry the day with fireworks.

    The story behind Michael O'Hare's departure from the show is extremely sad. He suffered from schizophrenia and by the end of season 1 he could no longer get to work every day. JMS offered to hold the production while O'Hare got treatment, but O'Hare said to carry on.
    JMS had a trap door for every character that would allow them to depart the show without too much effect on the overall story, and so O'Hare was written out.
    O'Hare does have one more important episode, which he did, but after that his condition worsened. One day he just left his home and didn't come back. He lived on the streets for some time then finally passed away before he was found again.

    I've never watched your channel before, but this video came up in my recommendations. I'm a fan of B5 from when it was first airing, and it's great to see the show still holds up with new viewers today.
    I see other commenters have already explained the behind the scenes reason for Sinclair leaving. You might be interested to know that having worked in TV a while, JMS was ready for unexpected cast changes. Every major character had what he called an "escape hatch", a way to remove them from the show that didn't ruin the overall story. Becoming ambassador to Minbar was Sinclair's escape hatch, allowing him to still be active in the background without actually appearing every week.
    I related to your adjustment to the new commander on the show. Losing Sinclair was huge, but Sheridan did begin to win me over by the end of the episode. It was smart of JMS to make Sheridan distinctly different in personality than Sinclair. Sheridan's more brash approach avoids him coming off as a cheap replacement for Jeff. JMS also said having a new commander gave him a chance to adjust the show a little. Sinclair was so wise and patient that JMS sometimes had trouble coming up with stories for him.
    I've already gone back to watch your reactions from the beginning, and I'm about to watch Infection. Keep making these reactions, and I will keep watching. I'll try and get to your reactions to The Expanse as well. That is one of my favorite science-fiction shows, along with B5, Farscape, and the original Star Trek.

I had been debating on whether I was going to watch season 2 because the 1st season seemed slow. We'll say he was the first character to have their name listed in the opening credits to have the trapdoor pulled. Obviously, Dr Kyle, Lita Alexander, and Laurel Takishima from the Gathering didn't make it to the series, and JMS had big plan for Takishima. The next semi-main character to be replaced was G'Kar's first assistant, whose name escapes me at this moment but they made a joke about her getting spaced, and she was replaced by Na'Toth... who has been recast again starting this season.

    One of the things that JMS did was prepare for the replacement of every character/actor if required. Unfortunately it was necessary bringing in Sheridan. You will come to love Sheridan. I remembered Boxleitner from the series The Scarecrow and Mrs. King. He was not a particularly deep character in that show. In this show you will see how good an actor he really is. On another note Bill Mumy (Lenier) did not do this for the money. He was fortunate enough to have parents wise enough to invest his money from Lost In Space so he has no need to work. He did say the makeup process was hell but he gave his word so he stuck it out.

    JMS basically had to write Michael O'hare off the show permanently because of his PTSD. However, JMS promised he would tell no one the real reason and he would take it to his grave. O'hare passed away from a heart attack in 2012.
    During a Comic con in 2013, JMS revealed the truth why O'hare left the cast because of his PTSD health status.
    So we did not know this in the 1990s. We just knew that he left the show for amicable reasons, so it wasn't 19 years that fans would be told the truth about leaving.
