Very helpful. My cilantro, as we call it, is always looking bad and turning brown by day two and I end up throwing away what I didn’t use at first. Now I know how to preserve it for many days ahead and I will save money. Food is now much more expensive so this tip is valuable in more ways than one. Thank you!
I buy good quality organic herbs and have used pretty much the same method with removing moisture and placing in a wrapped up zippie - you can use this method for all herbs. Now I will try the baking soda/ salt water solution too. Thank you Magic Food. 🙏
@@skatingcanuck9837 I do likewise but find my basil and my tarragon do not seem to last no matter what I do with them other than dehydrating. Do you do anything special if you use either of these herbs?
@@shelleysmith4017 You are right. This method does not work with delicate herbs like Basil, tarragon, savoury, etc... It's designed more for hearty herbs like thyme and rosemary. You can removed moisture and wrap it tight in a zippie and get a few extra days only. Tbh I don't think freezing will work for cilantro either. Have you considered buying an indoor garden set? You could grow basil with a grow light or hydroponically. It grows well inside. Aside from those two options there is no way to make basil last longer. I have seen basil pastes, but I would not use them. Nor would I buy dried basil - not all herbs work dried. I highly recommend you grow your own basil outdoors during gardening season. Another option is I have green balls I put in my crisper bins that have packs that remove gases and make you produce last longer. I also bought these special green bags (look like ziploc bags) that I use for some special produce to make them last longer. Hope this helps.
Cilantro is my very favorite herb and spoils so quickly! Just bought a fresh bunch this afternoon and it sits in my fridge now. So you have saved me from probably throwing out some of this in a couple days! I have a jar in sight and heading to the kitchen now. I have been throwing out this delicious green for years. Thank you so much!!!
I've tried all these methods except for putting the roots in water. I'll need to grow my own cilantro to do this as our cilantro roots are cut when we purchase it. The only way I have been able to save keep cilantro for more than a week is to cut the stem bottoms so the ends are fresh (like you do with the stems of flowers leaving the stems as long as possible). Then place the cilantro with the cut stems down in a large glass of ice water (maybe an inch or so of water). Cover cilantro using a small plastic cover with elastic (like a small shower cap-you can get a set of these covers at the $1.25 store). The elastic edge of the cap should fit around the glass container but it doesn't need to be air tight. Put in the refrigerator. Change the water with ice water every couple of days. Maybe this will help someone.
