It’s been 36 hours since I learned of the existence of this sport. And now my RUclips landing page is all about this sport. I feel like I have been living in a hole.
Welcome to pickleball @Tommah1000!
I lived in Seattle for 25 years and I've been to Bainbridge island many times but didn't know about the game until recently. I heard a retired friend mentioned it close to 20 years ago but had no idea what it looks like. This is American ingenuity for sure.

@@MarkSmith-er7fe It's not for everyone, but we like it.
How could you create such a high quality, well-produced video on the origins of Pickleball and not tell us where the name came from? Serious, glaring omission guys.
The name of the game is so interesting that we had to make it its own video. Watch here: ruclips.net/video/WtJN8CV0t7U/видео.html
Perfectly understandable editorial decision, you mean?
Thanks for this sport..I don’t know what I’d do without it. Played tennis and squash for 1/2 a century. Now in my 70th year, two knee replacements, and slower reflexes, this couldn’t have come at a better time. Again thanks.
PB is still hard on the body but we won’t stop until a train runs over us 😂

Yes sir you are a very lucky man to find the great sport of P.B.
It's 2022 and I am in my 70th year with 2 new knees and slower reflexes . Can't get enough pickleball
Keep it up sir!
I loved the story behind the game. I became addicted to the game at age 71 which was in March of this year. I told my wife I never thought I would be this active and having such a great time as I am playing Pickleball 3 days a week and table tennis 3 days a week. Thank you Barney from the bottom of my heart.
+Richard Johnson that's awesome! Glad you are having such a good time. Thanks for watching and Keep On Playing!
That is awesome. Great exercise. Super important.
Better exercise than golf lol.
Still playing?
As cute as the story is, what blows my mind is that an "envalope salesman" could afford that kind of house location back in the day
How fortunate Jennifer and I were able to stay on Bainbridge Island, meet all the pioneers and their families, and then write a book on the history of pickleball. Every time I watch this wonderful video, how thankful I am to have been able to personally know Barney, David, and their families. They're the best!!!
How did the name come about?
Let me say first that I've played tennis for years. I was introduced to pickleball a couple years ago, playing it just a couple times and getting away from it for whatever reasons. I recently started playing again and i really enjoy the game. I've seen many comments from tennis people bashing the game, saying it's for unathletic people. That's not fair- I'm still athletic, playing other sports and love pickleball. It's great for older folks and those with injuries. I'm hoping it sticks around and keeps people active. Btw, this is a great origin story.
Hello Pickelball Channel! I am from the Philippines. Pickleball here is just growing crazily all over the country. I would like to ask your permission to use this exact video as a reference in our school-based Pickleball program, we are called Lyceum of the Philippines-Cavite Pickleball Club. We included Pickleball in our school curriculum which is why hearing words and the story behind from the pioneers and the developer himself will be a great inspiration and motivation to our students. Thank you. :)
I am so thankful for this video! I teach middle school physical education, and Pickleball is among my favorite activities! I share this video with every class I teach every year. HOw blessed are we to actually hear directly from the original pickleball players themselves. RIP, Barney. Thank you!
What an awesome story! I grew up in the Seattle area. My game was tennis back in the 70's 80's and 90's, though I did try pickleball a few times, playing on my brother-in-law's home court around 1979. Nobody really knew what they were doing and, as a tennis player, I found it a bit boring. Fast forward to present, when I no longer play tennis due to various injuries. I discovered pickleball...again. They say we get addicted to pickleball. It's true! I play 4 days a week, enter tournaments, and absolutely love it. Thanks Barney for creating such a life-enhancing sport that is perfect for all ages! :)
As someone who just discovered Pickleball...it is great to hear this story. We put a court in our driveway and we play every evening when we are all home. So much fun. Thanks for sharing this wonderful game with the world!
We were so fortunate to be able to interview Barney and others before they passed away. So glad everyone will keep on playing based on their ingenuity!
Great American ingenuity.
@@jglee6721 Pickleball should be banned, it's so retarded. Only in the US could such a retard game be invented.
I just learned the game a couple months ago now and I am absolutely hooked. Obsessed even. This game is amazing.
Thank you for starting this wonderful game. We love it in Canada too.

Wonderful! I learned about pickleball at just about the time covid hit, last year... In July, I convinced my husband to try it.... the rest is history for us. He was a racquet ball player for years, but has transferred over to pickleball. We can't get enough. He layed out a short court in his shop and we play 5 nights a week...Practicing different skills.. Living in idaho, we can't wait for the snow to go away!
Love these stories about how games develop. Similarly boredom being the mother of invention for my brothers and I during the hot UK summer of 76. A local pub dumping the empties at a quiet car park, some creative lads and then behold the non stop fun and peril of bottle breaking was born! You held the neck of your bottle and the opponent endeavoured to demolish yours in one blow. If they failed it was your turn. If the base broke off and enough length was left then another strike was given. If you pulled away a helpful brother would hold your hand on the neck for the opponent to strike. Great days! and boy did we search for the thicker bottles of whisky back then. Shame it never really caught on. But many a long day ended standing proudly atop a pile of glass of myriad shades.
You needed to give the game a catchy name like Smashbottle or Bloodybottlehandpickle.

I lost 4 lbs first week playing and it’s helped my adhd SOMUCH! Yay!!!
I wouldn't be the player I am today, had it not been for the Pickleball segment that was introduced in my Seattle area middle school PE class (mid 80's). I was hooked. Even in the late 80's, there still weren't that many places to play. Fortunately for me, there were two families that had courts in their back yards. Where this sport is now is mind-boggling.
Thank you 🙏 to all forever God Bless
Thank you for sharing the whole story . I heard the name pickles came from a dog . Is this correct?
I looked up for the origin of the games name , and in an interview with a reporter, Joe Prichard mentioned that "Tenny Pong" could have been another name for this sport. No matter the origin, it has really become an enjoyable sport for those that play. (Cheers)
Thanks for sharing this story, I've come back 3 times now to watch it. My dad was obsessed with this game after trying it whilst holidaying in canada and since his return we've been playing on the regular in Wales,UK. We used mini tennis nets on a badminton court and we've now got a nice group of us meeting twice a week, sometimes needing 2 courts. We're at the very beginnings of developing a club and look forward to meeting and playing others. There are 2/3 more clubs in our area right now, it'll be great to watch this amazing game start to grow over here. Thanks everyone!
Where in Wales?

I was so inspired by how this game came about, going for the first time tonight!
A new pickleball aficionado sent me this video. Little did I realize what trendsetters my parents were - they put in a pickleball court in our home in Saratoga California in 1976....must have had friends from Seattle! We had many years of annual pickleball parties and we all loved playing. Hope the new homeowners treasure it as much! Thanks Barney!
Is that in Saratoga or Monte Sereno?
I play here in Canada. It's such a fun game. I've played all raquet sports in my life and now at 58 years old Pickleball is the raquet sport for me. Both my husband and I go and play in clubs. We both enjoy it very much. We can't get enough.
Thanks for creating this video. It's important to remember the game's roots especially as it increases in popularity.
Started playing at age 70 five years ago. Intro'd the game 1 1\2 yes. ago at the Oswego I'll. Senior Center. We get over 20 players (60+) 3 days a week.
That’s awesome
Love PB! Been playing since March and I’m hooked!
Love this backstory. God bless you sir for your creativity and spirit. I am addicted to this sport. I would be honored to have my paddle autographed by this man and I’m not an autograph seeker. Eternally grateful.
Thank you for this game, it was one of the best memories of my childhood. We loved playing a version we created as tennis playing pickleball rebels on an old outdoor badminton court at Four Winds Westward Ho camp on Orcas Island in the 90's.
Great vid thanks so much!

Thanks for this great video - am going to send the link to all my pickleball colleagues, who will enjoy it as much as I did I'm sure.
great story luved it ..great sport ..I tried it once ..I now travel with net balls and paddles every where
That's awesome!
What an amazing and purely joyful story !
Great Story!!!!! Thank you gentlemen!!!
You know for me, coming from a sports minded background/family/friends, I can easily connect with this story. Its very inspiring p, to say the least. My Dad had single handedly been responsible for the construction of and indoor (4 court) facility for competitive Badminton back in the early 60s. Sometime before the advent of this very inspiring story. As a competitive Badminton player myself, I refer to outdoor (picnic, camping and backyard) Badminton as goodminton! The real sport is not out there in the elements, because that defies any rationale. Yet when I see these folks actually made Pickleball first and how it's exploded in popularity, brings me to tears since I can connect with it on a personal label/experience in so many ways. That's all! Cheers!
Hey badmiyagi, who are you? I must know you, as I've been playing badminton all my life, and tournaments for 50 years, won 321 National, World and International titles until I retired last year at 89. But, at 90, I'm still playing Pickleball tournaments, including the Nationals. I started 40 years ago, and still love it. What a game! Joyce Jones.
I just got introduced to this game and I love it!
I taught Pickleball in high school PE classes, using wooden paddles with Whiffle balls, playing on a shortened tennis courts. It was the most favored sport played during the school year. Students had to learn the history and I still share the story. Joe Pritchard and Bill Bell created the game in 1965. It was fun, fast, and for the family. The game was called Pickle’s ball because the family dog kept stealing the ball. As the game progressed, the game was called Pickleball. GREAT video! Thanks :)
thank you Barney.
Love the story. Love the game!
But they didn't mention how they came up with the name "Pickleball" .
I've heard different stories about being named after a dog?
It's true named after the founder's dog pickle's
Love this game!
The movie telling the story behind Pickelball is a teasure. Thanks for all the effort in producing a nicely done documentary. At 80 yrs old I just played my first pickelball game yesterday. I was just fun! As a kid I played tennis and later played table tennis which i thoroughly enjoyed. But pickelball is probably also addictive. We played on a gym floor, so the feel of the paddle and ball took a little getting used to. Will have to give it a go...as they say. Now to select a paddle??? Plywood, cardboard, plastic,
aluminuim, titanium?
Love this !
Love 💘 pickleball !
Thank you for this video. I play 5 days a week here in Tennessee and have been addicted to this sport since it was introduced in our 55+ community nearly 8 years ago. I will share this with our Pickleball Club of over 90 members!

Fascinating.
This was so helpful thank you
Thanks!!
I too have played squash for45 years and stated pickleball two months ago. Love it. In our small 60 k city we now have over 600 club members paying dues and playing regularly in church halls, local school gyms and rec centers . The city has converted low use tennis courts into a nice outdoor facility with 12 courts that are free play .
The arrangements made with indoor facilities for hall rentals keeps the indoor session cost at$3 per two hour session. Need more halls.
We are in St Albert, which is a suburb of Edmonton, so need good exercise in long winters. Half of club membersbspend time in winter in Arizona or California where they play more.
In the 70’s someone brought Pickleball to BC’s Sunshine Coast. My family sold sports gear and we had to bring in the whiffle balls because someone set up a cul-d-sac in our town called Pickleball Crt which is still there. They’d set up lines and a net that came out every summer. Had to be an early part of the history too!
what a great story! I can't wait to get into the sport!!
You should!
My name is Arun and I don’t believe our paths have crossed dear. Been playing it for decades myself and heard of you though. Obviously you’ve done it right and reached that ripe, respected age and still playing, wow! Badminton has been and will always be a passion, although I’m playing more PB now and loving it.
Good on ya lady, keep on pickling and maybe I’ll get to see you sometime. I wanna shake your hand friend.

Hello from Venezuela.
I was sold the first day I heard the paddle and ball connect: August 2023
My swim club had pickleball courts, but the players used racquetball racquets instead of wood paddles. I've never played with the wood paddles, but the spirit of the game was just the same. I still get a kick out of the name.
I'm in it forever tooooo! I play 3 times a week! If I could I would play it everyday BUT got to rest and work!
This amazing game is perfect for my very active life. I can't believe it took me this long to get after it. And at 70 the PickleBall nutrition plan has really helped my overall health and life!
I love this very healthy addicting sport! I wish they would explain how the game got its name. I have heard several stories about it.
I agree. They should have explained the name origin. But it was a great video, nevertheless.
I live on bainbridge and have all my life and it’s cool to say I’m from the place pickle ball was made

11:59 how old is this original champion pickle ball paddle? Both blue and white one.
This is Important got me here
My old tennis coach Dave Lester was world champion back in the early 1980’s, is that correct? A while back another tennis buddy of mine Billy Jacobsen was the #1-ranked player too I believe. Lately my tennis doubles rival Tyson McGuffin is good I hear.
Pickleball will end up in the Olympics. Mark my words.
Yes and it will have an impact on the nation's health as tennis never could.
so this is why it has the same dimension as the badminton court ... Good story!
Glad you enjoyed it. Was wonderful being there and seeing where it all began.
My dad's name is Bill Bell. Guess I was destined to get involved with this sport.
Absolutely!
I heard a jock once say he hated Pickleball because it’s a sport where a common nerd could beat the brakes off an athelete
True!
Looking to build a court in my back garden. I’ve read that the standard size court is
20 x 44 feet. But with boundary it’s

No mention how the name Pickleball was chosen? Rumors about a dog named Pickle, but no photo of a dog or verification that the name was named for a dog.
