  • Pickleball is an unusual name for the sport we all love so we wanted to let some of the families who were actually there tell the story for themselves of how the game got its name. Travel with us now back to Bainbridge Island once again for this fun episode of Pickleball 411 and learn from founder Barney McCallum the story behind how the game got its name. Also hear first hand from Dick Brown, one of the four original men who helped develop the sport, and was actually in the room when they came up with the name pickleball. This is a fun look into a unique aspect of this exciting sport! If you’ve ever been asked why this game has such an unusual name, you won’t want to miss this episode!
Just in case you're wondering, Pickleball Channel is aware of alternate theories as to how the game came to be named pickleball including the one where it was named after the pickle boats in rowing. In this video, we simply let the eyewitnesses themselves tell their story. We hope you find it as captivating as we did. At the end of the day, pickleball is a great sport that is full of heart, creates community and is a lot of fun. We are excited to help keep it growing!

I worked for Barney McCallum, one of the Pickleball inventors, and had the honor of playing on the original court with him during a few 'sales meetings' on Bainbridge Island. He was a wonderful man and will always be grateful to him. I speak for many.

I like that you hear the same part of the story from different people.. it corroborates the details.. not that they'd be lying.. but gives the feeling that it really did happen just like they say, because they all say the same thing. Even though they would of told the stories around each other and it's easy to attain false memories like that.. but anyway! I like it.
Edit: Okay seems this isn't actually the true story.. how strange! lol.
So turns out it wasn't false memories.. it's just them going with the flow because it's a good story.

I was surprised to hear this story, although it's the first one I heard back when I started playing. I heard the other day that the inventor's wife said that the game was actually named after a pickle boat, which is a training boat for crew (rowing) made up of mixed rowers from the new guys to check them out before assigning them to their teams. (They are, after all, from a major rowing area) The idea was that the game is a mixed game, made up from Tennis, table tennis and badminton. The first story I heard was the one about pickles the dog. Could this be a case of multiple etymologies leading to the same name? Personally, I think it was named after the 'pop' you get when you open a jar of pickles, which sounds exactly like the pop from a good paddle shot. ;-)

This is fabricated. Named after the "Pickle Boat" the University of Washington rowing crew called their Pickleboat, the trailing boat.

@@turbotwinky22 Right. The dog was born later and named after the game. That's one of several mistakes in this video, but for the most part, it's not a bad intro, although I wish they would stop saying it's a game for lazy old Dads. IT takes a a lot more energy than people who haven't played it think. I lost 9 pounds the first year I played without even trying, and I was only 10 - 12 pounds overweight. I'm 68 and I now weigh the same as I did in college for the first time in 35 years.

Well, good for pickles the dog love for balls if Lulu was a little more interested it may have been called Luluball!😂

They all agreed on this apparent myth. Interesting. I too have heard the dog was named after the game, and the game named after the boat composed of leftover rowers from other teams.

Heard some players talking about the name, and although the story is cute, it does seem like a bit of a branding fail :-) The conversation included thoughts about how much easier it would be to get younger folks into the sport if it were called something more "exciting" like smashball. I confess when I first heard the name I thought it sounded lame... ("pickleball", played with wiffleballs???)... until the person, whom I trusted, explained it was a lot of fun and I should try it. I'm glad I listened!
Is it too late to have a "rename the sport something cooler" contest? ;-)

I agree it's a silly name. It's because of the name that a lot of people are holding back.
