The rise of pickleball

- In the summer of 1965, seeking to keep their bored kids entertained, some dads on Bainbridge Island, Washington, invented a game using a plastic ball, some wood, and a badminton court. "Pickleball" was born. It has since become the fastest-growing sport in America, with nearly five million people now playing the game. Correspondent Luke Burbank looks at Pickleball lore, and takes a whack at playing against Pickleball Hall of Famer Jennifer Lucore.

I saw it on espn4 (didn't even know it was a espn4 at the time) but started watching it during the pandemic and have been hooked ever since
It's contagious. It's invasive. And I'm a victim 🤣
Started playing pickleball during the pandemic and I’ve been obsessed ever since. Probably play 3x a week now.
It’s completely true that someone new will start enjoying this game after only 30 minutes
Let’s play sometime if you are ever in New York. I have a Pickleball court
Lies again? Football Soccer Play Beautiful
Nice to see cousin Joel’s game known world wide!
Hellooooo Bill, thanks again for the family invention :-)
Pickle ball players give such band kid energy
Went to the gym for basketball and picked up pickleball and haven't looked back since. FUN SPORT!!!
Can't believe it's been around so long and is just catching on.
As a nation we wasted decades on the aristocrat spectator sport known as tennis. Tennis has done very little to the physical fitness of the mass. Here is a fun game that can improve the health of the nation.
Me too hahaha. I used to love basketball and I used to coach as well. Now all I do is Pickleball hahahaha. Let’s play sometime if you are ever in New York.
Fantastic! Finally a media story that shows people really playing, rather than people who look like the extras in that godawful Ozempic ad😄
Patricia I agree, they did a great job showing all ages and skill levels, thank goodness :-)
All the retired folks in Florida play pickleball. Causes a huge number of knee and ankle injuries (and lots of surgery) but it’s stays popular regardless.
Great job Sunday Morning! I was thrilled to be part of your segment and to share the love and FUN of pickleball with the world! Best sport ever.
Please don't let Joan Pritchard's contribution to the game go unrecognized. In 1965 when the game was invented Joan came up with the name “pickle ball” -a reference to the thrown-together leftover non-starters in the “pickle boat” of crew races. The dog story was invented in 1968 by a newspaper journalist because he thought naming the game after the dog was a better story. However, Pickles, the dog, was born three years after the game had been named.
That's an awesome backstory. Joan's name should definitely be part of the founding story.
Yes, Joan is recognized in the history of the sport - In fact, The Name has a whole chapter in my book: History of Pickleball - More Than 50 Years of Fun!
I grew up in Seattle and we played pickleball for PE. I also took for my PE credits in community college and university. Now I am in an adult league in Portland.
I love the sound of the paddle hitting the ball.
I am for any sport that encourages people to get in shape and stay in shape.
I used to play tennis and recall the energy of a tennis ball strike. Pickle ball has the same dynamics but with less energy in the ball, I see why folks have taken to it.
Here in Tucson over the past few years they've been changing tennis courts at parks to pickleball courts and literally every evening every court is filled.
We played pickle ball when I was in middle school in the 80s. I loved it!
I didn’t hear about pickle since 3 months ago
It is great for senior citizens. It is like tennis-Ping pong. Of course, nothing beats like the sound of the tennis ball. Still playing tennis at 70 years albeit slower.
So thankful for these people!!!!
I was just down in Delaware and Sea Colony in Bethany Beach just opened a bunch of Pickleball courts. So many people are going crazy over this sport!
Your comment reminded me of Sea Colony-I spent so many summer vacations there as a child.🙂
Let’s play Pickleball if you guys are in New York.
Glad to see the sport getting more publicity. Our area is seriously lagging in providing enough courts for public demand and I get the feeling we're not alone.
It's our city planners who would rather build new tennis courts than pickleball because they don't understand anythint about their community.
Yes, you're not alone. L.A. where I live is totally Pickleball ignorant. The first government official (mayors, council members, supervisors, etc) who will take PB seriously and start building courts will be a sure winner in an election.
I loooove Pickleball soooo much!!!!
I enjoyed this little history lesson. Thanks!
4:10 "few victories" in the kitchen volleys lol
I just learned how to play 9 short months ago after playing tennis for almost 40 years. It's a great game and very addictive once you get the hang of it. If you haven't tried it, you are truly missing out.
I am not missing out anything. I will miss tennis when this "weed" takes over all the tennis courts.
@@tomsd8656 You sound like you’re not even from this country.
@@mindright9771 Originally not.
@@tomsd8656 I've played tennis for the longest time but Pickleball is more fun. I won't miss tennis at all.
@@Vista114 I'd rather people like you stick to PB and no longer play tennis than to play both.
Addictive and fun. Great game... great workout. And a lot of fun people!
Thank you for covering the background on this wonderful game. Though I am am an avid paddleball and racquetball player, no doubt this is growing all over and is a great sport.
The segment was very well done but it didn't emphasize the social aspect of it (most play is doubles) and how much fun it can be, with lots of laughter after crazy shots, etc.
I love Sunday Morning CBS 🌄 ☺
Awesome story. Never heard of the game until now.
Ball Pickle
I had all of my pickle ball questions answered, thank you!
Can’t wait until I’m 75 years old to start playing.
Never heard of it until about 10 years ago. Always played racquet sports so why not? A lot of complaints about the sound from neighbors living near the courts.
My local firefighters have been playing pickle ball during down time. It looks very fun and I would join a game if invited!
Play with us here in New York!!!!
Great to have a sport used by so many - just keep the lines and play off my tennis court. Make your own.
Great reporting Luke!!
I just signed up for a pickleball clinic hosted by my local parks and recreation department
Pickleball looks like great exercise and a fun sport to play.
Robert, it is! I would guess there is place to play in your area. Give it a try
I would never have known this is that you didn't post it thank you
Looks so fun!
Doug! Our good neighbor showing us the way. What great sport-
I feel 10 years older just talking as bout pickleball
Kudos to CBS for doing this story! Just like the rest of the Country, we sure do love and are addicted to pickleball here in Charlotte, NC! #NeedMoreCourts
Especially up here in the Lake Norman area.
Same here in San Diego, CA!
looks fun, gotta try it
I don't get what's so revolutionary about it. It's tennis with a wooden paddle and a wiffle ball.
My thoughts exactly. Basically tennis with a wiffle ball.
I think it's because it's a lot lot lot easier than regular tennis. Tennis is a very demanding sport technically just to hit the ball over the net requires skill without going into rallies and games, this looks a lot easier. I'd say with the amount of tennis courts in the US people should play pop tennis
Thongs change scent from one end to the other. Knowledge is power. God bless
Love this promotion of Pickleball! haha, I spy footfaults in the kitchen (NVZ)! Bravo!👏
Ha!, i played that at school with a tennis ball in New Zealand back in the 70's, we called it Patterball. That made me take up tennis and table tennis, which i became a rep on both.
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls God Bless Y'alls 🙌 ❤️ 🙏
I played tennis for many years and still love it... but, pickleball is more fun! Pickleball surprises most people, including me. It is a unique game, not tennis lite.
Yes! Cheers fellow Pickleball lover! I love the game so much that I made a music video 😂
ruclips.net/video/y-JN4HRmvfA/видео.html
I’m performing for the second time at a Pickle Ball tournament here in Memphis and psyched. One day soon, I plan to play. Maybe I’ll play my sax while playing Pickle Ball 🤔
Great game to play between generations! Everyone can compete!
Great for rehab business; older people are wrenching their knees and their wrists. We intend to add staff to accommodate patients for this thing as it takes off. Some people don't realize the demands of the sport.
@@Cathy-xi8cb I've seen people fall, one guy hit himself with the racket, had to get stitches, and people get hit in the eye. So, open your rehab business near the largest Pickleball courts! Set for life! 🤣
I learned how to play in 1987 at a sailing camp called Four Winds - Westward Ho on Orcas Island in the Puget Sound of Washington! Being from California, I never hard of it again until many years later when the largest retirement community in Santa Rosa was having major controversy because they wanted to install a court 🙄
Why would opening a court have been a major controversy?
@@oraach people always find something to complain about… 🙄 if I remember it was because some people were opposed to losing the regular tennis court space but I could be wrong about that - they even wrote about it in the local paper I think
@@oraach Mainly the sound; imagine living next to pickle ball courts where they start playing at 7am till 12pm.....
Oakmont??
@@robin212212 in this case it was the tennis people vs the pickleball people - the courts in this senior community are kind of spacious and at the far end - not sure how many seniors are partying after 8 or 9 p.m. 😆
Emma Watson was right, “ Pickle Ball is life”. There is nothing else I would rather be doing.
At around 4:10 in the video he volleyed from the “no volley zone” (kitchen) twice!
i love the silent artwork at theend of these stories. why? i dont know!
I've been to Bainbeidge Island! If I only knew...
I love this sport. We’ve been playing for almost 6 years. Our club now has 3 Pickleball courts along with many many grass courts and clay courts. Manchester by the Sea just built 6 courts. Everyone should try it. Easy to learn hard to master.
"Easy to learn and hard to master" is the very definition of a really well designed game or sport. Chess, Go, Tennis (several racket sports) Soccer... Pickleball. Yep. Pickleball changed my life in a very positive way, my health, my social life, and my ... joy. Awesome game.
Story didn’t mention the outcry of residents complaining to homeowners associations about the constant pop pop pop going on all day and night and driving people mad.
No more annoying than tennis or basketball... as long as there are quiet hours, it's just part of being part of a society.
Foot fault at 4:08 :)
I came here to look for this comment :)
I've never heard of it before, and I went to school in Washington
Looks like fun
They just installed two pickleball courts here in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
wait I thought it was 8
anyway the tennis courts there are the slowest things I’ve ever played on so it doesn’t matter
Looks fun, might try it. But more likely I will stick to disc golf(another fast growing sport) and Golden Gate Park has a terrific disc golf course too!
What is the difference between Paddle tennis(Deaden Tennis ball, Wooden Paddle, on a Badminton court) which I played in the early 70's and pickle Ball?
I would say the size of the crt and rules.
Fun fact... when Bill gates was a kid, he was involved in this circle of original pickleball players! His father was friends with the 3 guys that invented the game!
Funner fact: They called him Dill Gates.
I’ll see myself out, happy Sunday!
✌🏼
Yes, that is mentioned in the History of Pickleball book :-)
Jones Beach, on Long Island has had small 'tennis like' courts since at least the mid 1960's. We played with wooden paddles and a sponge ball. So, if these guys on Bainbridge Island think they 'invented' this game, ....... Kinda Not. P.S.: 1968; on the side of my house, with my friends, fooling around, I tossed a tennis ball across the yard and then we rolled croquet balls to see who could get the closest to the tennis ball. Later, I'm telling my father about the game we invented and he said, "Oh, Bocce Ball." Point being, so much for 'inventing' stuff.
@@bloatedsodium7301 Sour Gates? Stretching it toooooo far?
I didn't realize it's been around this long.
Finally some news I’m actually interested in
Pickle ball is huge in Naples.... for dang sure.
"...... pickleball hall of famer.."
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Points take forever. Don't make plans and expect to be on time anywhere after a match.
I’m going to use that high school pictures to keep away the bad spirits👻👻👻👻
I like tennis. Though this looks kinda fun
Ok this is poor mans tennis like enough
Luke hit volleys in the kitchen. Can’t do that.
True... but it's Luke :-)
@@Allpickleball I’m sure he was so incompetent in the demonstration that they used any footage that he made contact with the ball. But it’s the most fundamental rule of pickle ball regarding no volleying in the kitchen.
Whoever is in New York. I am always playing at Pickleball plus Llc in New York Long Island. Let’s play. I am the owner of Azia New York. I will be hosting tournaments here very soon.
Imagine just inventing a sport!
THANKS MOUMITA RAHMAN SON OF FATHER MY SPOUSE I LOVE YOU
People just play pop tennis , it's basically the same (but better) and you can play it normal tennis courts. The USTA or USPTA don't remember which one is pushing to paint the lines on tennis courts so you can play pop tennis
Necessity being the mother of invention.
Buy a home near a pickle ball court and prepare to lose your mind. The thwack thwack thwack of balls from sun up to sundown is much worse than tennis. someone actually used a device to measure it.
How do you know if someone plays pickeball?
Don’t worry they’ll tell you
I thought this originated in the south. Lol the word pickle made me think that
4:12 foot fault in the kitchen. Will take more time to learn the rules!
We have an English version called BollockBall.
It's tennis for people who don't like to move much. It's a fad that won't last. Like disco.
Great. Finally I see it, not just hear about it. Question: Do children ever get to play?
Jones Beach, on Long Island has had small 'tennis like' courts since at least the mid 1960's. We played with wooden paddles and a sponge ball. So, if these guys on Bainbridge Island think they 'invented' this game, ....... Kinda Not.
So it's a cross between tennis and ping-pong/table tennis?
Hmm, how is it different from Tennis?
4:10 you're in the kitchen bro that's a violation
Its really popular in The Villages, FL
Yes! My uncle Rick plays there and picks up chics every weekend!
So is Hep C.
@@dthomas7929 that too 😂💀
I consider this game "weed" in the rose garden, with tennis being the rose. Sadly, many now prefer weed.
L.A. where I live is totally Pickleball ignorant. The first government official (mayors, council members, supervisors, etc) who will take PB seriously and start building courts will be a sure winner in an election.
Tah Taah. No Taah Tah.
Great marketing ad, CBS Advertisement (news)
Pickleball or Tennis for the slow as I like to call it
Cute
Hmmm. Interesting. Lol
If the story of naming the game after a dog named Pickles is wrong, I don't wanna be right!
Let's just make this part of the pickleball origin myth, like Washington and the cherry tree.
Just me, counting the number of ageist, ableist, elite tennis players in the comments screaming, "But the tennis, though!" Get over yourselves, folks! Not everyone can or wants to play tennis (at any level). And complaining about kids playing and [gasp] never taking up tennis? Are you the same people who bemoan kids on their phones all the time? At least they're being active. Why does it matter to you that some people enjoy a different way of getting outside, and being active and social? I used to play tennis all the time, but I've recently become partially disabled. I have heard of pickleball and maybe that's an option for me... seems fun. People having different hobbies is not a zero sum game: If you like tennis, great... why come and crap on others' joy?
It just bothers me that he is volleying in the kitchen. 😂
2:40 is that Johnny Depp?
