You two have made it so easy to understand, thank you! I have been struggling to understand the game and i feel like i'm walking away with so much more information.
I'm a tennis player and just beginning at pickelball. Very good explanation of the basics, but as others have already commented the video would have been better if the basics of scoring were included. When do players switch sides? What's the reason for including the player number as part of the score?
You can only score a point when you are serving. If you serve and lose the point, the serve goes over to the opponent which is a side-out. In doubles play, both of you get to serve and lose the point before the serve goes over to the other team (side-out). Hence, the need to include which server number you are when serving.
Why did you switch from tennis to pickelball? The whole thing seems unnecessary to me. What am I missing? Or is this just another fad and way for sports equipment companies to make more money? Enlighten me.
Great job displaying all of the techniques and giving such thorough explanations! I am sending this one to all my newbie family members! i told them they all needed a new year's resolution: TO LEARN PICKLEBALL!
Awesome instructional video! Lisa and Michael really made understanding the rules easy. I'm new to Pickleball and while my friend did a great job explaining the rules the first time I played (two days ago), your video really cleared things up for me. Thank you so much. Is Pickleball Zone a franchise?
Hello ... you stated at the 12:40 mark that the score is 101, then you served again and you stated that if you didn't win the point, you would stay in that position and the service goes to your teammate. Your teammate called out the score: "... 102". Wouldn't that be "112" instead as you lost your second point and your teammate would be calling out the score "112"?
the same team is still serving. so, he scored once to bring the score to 1-0-1. then he faulted, which doesnt score a point for either side, it rotates the serve to his partner. with the score being 1 on the serving side 0 on the receiving side and the 2nd server is serving: 1-0-2.
I watched this before playing for the very first time last weekend - I was READY!!! This quick video covers all the basics and will make you feel like you belong on that court! THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you! There needs to be more clarity about the score keeping, though. Do you only score points when serving? Do both players on a team serve before the other team serves?
Yes you only score points when your team has served, and yes both players get a turn at serving each turn except for the first turn. As Lisa explained, The first team to serve each game only gets one person serving. Then it goes to the other side when they have not scored a point.
Coming from tennis, I don’t understand the importance of saying which server you are. There seems to be an over abundance of rules to keep things “fair” and prevent the game from being competitive. Why not just do away with scoring then and rally back and forth and see how long you can keep the ball in play? Like playing paddy cake with a ball and paddles!
After watching videos of professional pickleball matches( the best players have been playing competitive tennis before playing pickleball btw) my view of the game has changed. You must move to play and score, you can’t just sit back and wait for the ball to come to you. And for those who say pickleball is for the fat and lazy, look at these instructors! They could run circles around you fat couch potatoes!
I've only played pickleball once so this video is so very helpful for a newbie to this sport like myself. Thank you for making such a thorough and well paced video.
As a club member and leader who has several aspiring and novice pickleballers in my club, this is an amazing video to have new players watch before training and club play can begin. Great work!
This the best 16 minutes I've spent in my quest to learn pickleball and share my new favorite sport with friends! Great job Lisa in demonstrating the REASONS why the rules are the way they are to make the game more fair! Everyone talks about the rules, but very few say why the game was made that way. I've never heard it explained so succinctly as you've done here, bravo!!!
Three questions: 1) What score are we playing to? 2) Do you have to win by 2 as in tennis or table tennis? 3) Is singles Pickleball a thing, or does it need to be teams?
1) The standard score to play to is 11 2) The standard is to win by 2 points 3) Yes. There is singles in Pickleball...either "skinny singles" which means you play just one side of the court or singles can play the full court

But don't call that a sport. And if it's fast growing it's because of the fast growing number of people that can't move.
Everything seems so straight forward but the calling out the score and server. That's confusing and hard to understand why it's necessary to call out the server number. I'm sure there's a deeper explanation that will make it make sense.
I'm a total newb -- today being the first time I even RUclipsd "pickleball" -- so please pardon my ignorance. But if Michael is the second server, wouldn't that mean the other team won the previous point? Therefore, he would be calling out "1-1-2" (instead of "1-0-2"). Yes? Apologies if this sounds frivolous, but clarifying this would help me better understand how to score the game.
no, only the serving team can score. the same team is still serving. so, he scored once to bring the score to 1-0-1. then he faulted, which doesnt score a point for either side, it rotates the serve to his partner. with the score being 1 on the serving side 0 on the receiving side and the 2nd server is serving: 1-0-2.
It's a mistake to think this is just a game for old people. It does give you a work out and you can still get injured...sore muscles...tennis elbow....falling down etc.

I live in Beaverton oregon. One of my coworkers has been trying to get me to play pickleball for months. I never looked it up. I'm addicted already! I learned to play badminton in the club in Suwon, South Korea & Madrid Spain and have been missing badminton greatly. I got an American version! Hooah!
So what's confusing in the demo play is that even when a return bounces in the kitchen, yall really aren't ever entering it for the return hit. What's the reasoning there?
they are saving steps. if they can keep their feet behind the kitchen line and reach in to volley, they dont have to remember to step back out of the kitchen to avoid a potential violation on the next shot. great question!
excellent question. the serve always starts from the right hand side of the court. but if your team receives the ball after a side out, and the score for your team is ODD, then whoever was originally the 2nd server for your team, will serve first.
I’m in Canada and was just thinking two days ago about searching on You Tube on how to play pickleball. And here it is!! Thank you so much Michael and Lisa for doing this introduction to pickleball video. It looks like a fun game to play. I’m 60 years old and am looking for a physical activity to compliment my daily step count in walking. I hope everyone in my family’s favourite state (ever to visit) of Oregon is doing well. We hope to be back real soon!
I know very little about this sport, but as a badminton player who doesn’t get a bounce, has the same court lines (I think?) and is very much allowed in the front, the kitchen is pretty funny
Excellent demonstration how the play rules are! For me Pickleball is completely new. I had an introduction today. Besides tennis and badminton I find this game is quick, and great for movement for the lower back. I think I am persuaded!
Wow, my family started playing this game on tennis courts when I was a kid. We didn't play tennis, but we used the wood beach paddles and instead of this ball, we used tennis balls. The rules were almost the same, and we used the same space on the tennis court. We also played in doubles. This allowed the older people to play, and we weren't shooting tennis balls out of the court, due to never playing tennis in our lives.
i've just started watching videos of PB because I want to learn how to play. Yours is one of the best i've seen thus far. There are still a few questions I have (such as what does "side out" mean but I guess I'll get that sooner or later.

It's NOT mini tennis. It's a cross between tennis and ping pong. It's really fun! I am not an expert by far BUT if you have an athletic background such as I do, you will find it very satisfying for working out. If you don't have hand eye coordination, strongly advise against it as you can hurt yourself! Give it a shot though! It's alot of fun!
I learned to play in the 80s when I lived in Washington State. My cousin's husband taught me. It was so much fun. I'd played tennis for years, but never heard of Pickle Ball. It's sort of like mini-me tennis. Very fun. Shout out to Brian Gray for learning me some PB. 😁
After the first rally to start a new game has ended, the new and subsequent rallies allow each player the opportunity to serve for their team. The player who is the first server of that new rally stays #1 until they lose a rally, then their partner is now the #2 (second server) and stays serving until they lose a rally. When that happens, it is a side out, and the serve goes to the other team.
Did I miss it or was it mentioned what score you need to get to, to win a game and if you need to win by one or two points? Also am I right in saying that only the team that's serving can score? Thx :-)
@@thomasjedreski7885 unlike in tennis where the server gets 2 faults, in pickleball each server only gets 1 attempt to land a good serve. its kind of like innings in baseball or something. its like this - if you are on the serving team, the first server (#1) will continue to serve and score until their is a fault against their team. then the second server (#2) will do the same. in theory the person who starts the game could be the only server of the game if they score enough points in a row ;)
Looked up random pickleball video to (once and for all) see what it is. Just watched Steve Lehto discuss a well meaning HOA (lol oxymoron) who installed a pb court and the nearby homeowners say it's too noisy. And BOY is that noisy.
tennis with a whiffle ball and a oversized ping pong paddle.. People complaining about the sound in their neighborhood.. I had to check it out for myself... LOL I hear the insane echo.. sounds like similar to raquet ball or squash... I thought those people were just complainers but that would be annoying to hear that popping sound for hours if your neighbor had a court..LOL good luck..
I'm not sure that any of this is sustainable. I've seen discarded Pickleballs drawn together in hordes, crashing around in the surf off the Northwest coast. Worse, is the amount of sea life that uses a discarded Pickleball as a nursery, then grows too large to get out. These crustacean -filled Pickleball trash, then become attractive to other fish who ingest them and cannot expel them. The fish die, their bodies break down, and the Pickleballs are Again released into the waters to be ingested and kill again. My team is starting a study into the effects of Sea birds' beaks getting caught in Pickleball holes when trying to extract a small crustacean, getting a-hold, and not being able to release it from their beaks.
I hope I didn’t a fend any dikidadikets I’m mr funny good luck pickling all this talk about pickles made me hungry for one one more thing can you eat a pickle when you playing this super intense sport good luck I’m new here just saying 🤘
I am a little confused. Regarding doubles. Do we return to our original court positioning after each side out or stay where we were at the end of a point? Let’s say I began on right side beginning the serve. If we stay in our right/left court side after the end of a point, I may end up on left hand side. I read the rules they seem to contradict. If we don’t return to our original position then at some point the score may we odd and if the opponent is side out and we begin serving again on right hand side then that rule cannot apply. I’m confused…
Maybe I missed it, but it's important to note that you must be serving to get a point. Also, game is usually to 11 and you must win by two points. You should also clarify if balls hitting the line are in or out. Thanks!
This video is wonderful it enhances my interest n knowledge I ve to study few more time about yourPickle ball vedio in order to improve my practice Thanks
What I get confused about is the rule I heard the right side is for serving when your score is even and the left side is for odd. Are you still supposed to switch sides if the first server faults and the second server goes next? Doesn’t that contradict the rule or do most people not play with the odds and evens. Excuse my ignorance on it; I’m still pretty new and whenever I play doubles with people they act like they’ve never heard the odd and even rule.
Perfect for beginners! Understanding the basics is key to mastering any sport. With this video and my Oliver-Sport paddle, IM READY !!!!!!

I was wondering what Pickleball is, now I know. It's Ping-Pong on a tennis court .
what difference it makes whether you are server #1 or #2? why does it have to be announced and not just the score?
After the first rally to start a new game has ended, the new and subsequent rallies allow each player the opportunity to serve for their team. The player who is the first server of that new rally stays #1 until they lose a rally, then their partner is now the #2 (second server) and stays serving until they lose a rally. When that happens, it is a side out, and the serve goes to the other team.
Really excellent video! If I lived nearer to you, I'm in Colorado, I would signup for one of your camps. Thank you!

@@thomasjedreski7885 because it lets everyone know when the other side will start serving.
@@groovypickleball What if a serve hit the top of the net and lands in play? Does it matter that it hit the net? Is it like table tennis?
@4score as long as the ball clears the kitchen and lands in the correct court, it's good. It doesn't matter if it touches the net.
I had no idea there were different ball and court materials. We just bought the cheapest pickleball kit we could find at walgreens.
Very helpful y’all! Thanks
So it's like a slower racquetball in a non enclosed space with a whiffleball
Nahhh....
I'm going back to shuffle board at the Punta Gorda Senior Center.
Jerry, gimmie another Busch....
I wonder if the Deschutes Public Library ever thought they'd become the world's foremost teacher of Pickleball? Lolololol 1.8M views! Dayom! xD
As a beginner it is easier for me to understand the score when the third number is called as “first” or “second” rather than 1 or 2. 🙂
Can you hit with top spin Or it is not allowed ?
yes.
Great first video to watch. Thank you!
I will continue to enjoy pickle ball my way ... from my folding chair, with a nice glass of 12 y/o Glenlivet and a Padron 7000 burning!
I'm an old-time tennis and racquetball player. This pickleball sounds very complicated, and you didn't say anything about strategy.
interesting game. my friends in florida showed us the game but we never played when we returned to ny
One of the best instructional videos! Great job!
Best and Easiest Explanation I've seen thank you.
Amen!!
Except the score keeping and server number changes are confusing. I am praying that this rule is simplified soon.
@@zuzu7250 it wont be, sorry about that
Old news & BORING compared to the LATEST GREATEST NEWEST TREND.... TurdBall!!
Clarification on calling score, wouldn't he call "0-1-2" because you didn't win the point and switched serve on your own side?
Bend Oregon is a beutiful place, why would you play this game indoors? BTW, are young people allowed to place this game?
I hope I didn’t a fend any dikidadikets I’m mr funny good luck pickling all this talk about pickles made me hungry for one one more thing can you eat a pickle when you playing this super intense sport good luck I’m new here just saying 🤘
I still can't wrap my brain around score calling - the third number is still confusing!
The calling of the serves 101 is so dumb. Why can't they just do it like Tennis? This makes the games more confusing for no reason.
Thanks!
This video is wonderful it enhances my interest n knowledge
I ve to study few more time about yourPickle ball vedio in order to improve my practice
Thanks
What I get confused about is the rule I heard the right side is for serving when your score is even and the left side is for odd. Are you still supposed to switch sides if the first server faults and the second server goes next? Doesn’t that contradict the rule or do most people not play with the odds and evens. Excuse my ignorance on it; I’m still pretty new and whenever I play doubles with people they act like they’ve never heard the odd and even rule.
Kitchen. Pickleball.
Also don't step over the potato peel. If you do it's called a vacuum. And that sucks
