What sucks is that some of us in the 80s and 90s had so much garbage pushed on us that it's almost impossible to unlearn and do it right. I still played college ball and did pretty well but I still play in my 40s and am now hitting it better than I did when I was young. I just have to mentally lock into this method before each pitch or I default back to the muscle memory from bad coaching. The other week, I did this swing and was trying to check it but his am oppo double in the gap because I left the barrel in the zone and it still had power.
He has those videos up. Look up his high level swing pattern videos and it's broken down in a series of 14 videos I think. Not as informative as buying the program but does help make alot of sense.
Excellent! The proof is in the pudding. It works with our players. 100%… I said it before and I’ll say it again clinics are a waste of time IF they don’t have some one to help them when they go home and struggle with what was taught at the clinic. Unfortunately players need that 1 on 1 for several lessons until they’re good enough to maintain it on their own.
It's all about being connected with the elbow at the side as quickly as possible. You can't do that without hinging the wrist first. He's exactly right even if he might emphasize the first HALF of a great swing without acknowledging the second half.
Especially now that I’m older playing softball I’ve noticed I’ve always hit the ball further with my original baseball swing doing this. Turning the barrel instead of forcing the wrist snap in front of me
If you grip the bat with your door knocking knuckles(like Aaron Judge) and cocked wrists, you get on plane just as quick with a hammering motion without supinating your wrist unnaturally.
Exactly. In addition, this guy's method causes the front side to fly open- which pulls the hitter's off-plane and significantly reduces vision. Yes, this technique generates a ton of power, but it also makes hitters extremely easy to strike out. Hitters of the previous generation knew how to generate quickness and power without sacrificing as much contact, and they were much better overall hitters than what we're seeing today.
Watched the video. Agree with a lot especially getting the bat in the hitting zone. What I don’t understand or see is the weight shift from the backside to a balanced position with a strong front side. I watched, judge, Harper, Trout, and old Mantle video and they definitely do not lunge but do shift somewhat forward then rotate. Their back foot is turned and almost off the ground and have a firm straight leg
That front leg actually becomes a brake for the forward momentum by pushing into the ground which that helps the front hip rotate backwards so the back hip rotates forwards. That's why those players & many other greats like Hank Aaron, Ted Williams, and Babe Ruth all ended with their back foot closer to the pitcher at the end of their swings. This coach either doesn't understand this, or intentionally leaves that out to validate his point. And to say it's something they "are athletic enough to get away with it" is at best misinformed.
Do you feel the same with a Slowpitch Softball swing? Would you use the same mechanics since you need to generate more power since the ball is coming much slower?
My daughter play 10u usssa travel softball. She uses this hitting method. She is 4'6" and one of the smallest girls on our team. She is our 4 hitter and hits the ball as far as our biggest girls.
Great explanations, Coach! Question regarding the body tilt in getting the high, middle, and low pitches: would you recommend starting at the low body tilt position and then coming up to get the middle and high pitches? To me, it's always been easier to go up than drop down, and it's one less thing to think about. Just my thought, but YOU are the pro! Thanks, Coach!
I agree with almost everything Rich is teaching, here. What I always find interesting is most great modern hitters have mechanics like this, but then guys like Hank Aaron (one of history's greatest hitters) and some other old time greats, literally do everything that even little league coaches would cringe at. Hank was always way out on his front foot, super pushy swing, and rolled over badly. Maybe the strike zone was higher in those days. 🤷🏻♂️
Richard, My daughter’s coach is a Tony Gwynn guy. When he sees my daughter, or any of the other girls, supinate their hands and turn the barrel in an effort to duplicate your mechanics, he has a bit of a conniption fit! So, my daughter reverts back to her push swing . I really want her to commit but it is very difficult when her travel and high school coaches are proponents of Punch and Judy hitting. Any suggestions? Thank you
Talk to your daughters coaches about her using a different technique and ask them to support her in it by not disrupting it. Perhaps they can’t coach her in the technique but they can sure not interfere (don’t say that last part that way to them, hehe).
My son is in 12U I started teaching this to him late last year. It takes a while to really understand this. What helped him, was the inside elbow to the hip, which once he did that, he can snap it and it's less work. I missed that for a long while as it wasn't quite right. Now? He's hitting WAY more balls. I mean this guy worked with Judge, and if that's not good enough for anyone, I don't know what is. @01:06 is a good example, see that elbow on the hip? That.
@@jumpman23823 It’s ok, he does and no one sees it. Been analyzed to death, but still people say they don’t swing like that. It’s fine, carry on, they do.

But Rich the swing plane is on an upward trajectory. I know that’s what you u are saying but saying you are swing down on the ball got me confused for a second because we actually swing in an upward trajectory. @@TeachermanHitting because most people say it not good but, I would like to understand Aaron judge swing because I’m 6,2 at 14 and it think it would work for me
Think of dipping the shoulder as a result of your power move... it is not dipping but a powerful tilting of the torso. Ted Williams does it as well. He sets up front shoulder down back shoulder up...(haven't heard this from Richard in a while) why? So you can generate that strong tilt that CAUSES your back shoulder to drop. Williams back shoulder is lower than the front almost immediately... this tilt motion is much stronger AND QUICKER than a twist or simple rotation. Try it yourself!!!
Problem is this tilt alone DOES NOT fully describe the rest of the swing. Front leg block and ground forces absolutely complete the picture.... thats why Richard's videos and Ted williams look so contradictory.... but they do share some key points.
ruclips.net/video/P6nxfq959_g/видео.html Watch this swing by Williams. It's a VERY similar initial bat movement. downward supination with power trunk tilt!! This looks exactly like the swing Richard is trying to teach!
Hello @TeachermanHitting how do I teach this to a younger hitter? My daughter tends to drop her entire back half when trying to turn the barrel causing her to get under the ball
I haven’t played baseball since coach pitch and here I am 20 years later got talked into playing on an adults softball league and let me tell you after being one of the worse hitters on my team I practiced this (recorded my self to see how it was looking) for just 15 minutes one day and last practice I knocked just as far as the best players on my team. My whole team was speechless. Thanks a lot I will be sure to show this to as many players as possible.
This is very interesting, and I like the logic and the demonstration. I'm struggling with the hand/wrist movement after contact, I'll call it "release". When I practice the motion in this video, my bottom hand seems to have the face (not palm) pointed straight up, and it is difficult to roll the wrists over to finish the follow through. At some point, the face of my bottom hand needs to be facing forward, not up, doesn't it? I feel like I am missing something the end of the swing with the hands. Thank you!
Yeah man, you're right! You'll end up palm up palm down, this is just a feel to get you to understand when and how to launch the bat. Just put all your effort into turning the barrel rearwards as quick as you can and let the rest happen normally
Hello sir, I have a question about aiming. Should the knob of the bat go to the ball or should my hands go to the ball? Or does anyone here have any advice? Thank you.
Does this swing path technique work for slow pitch 6 to 12 foot arch softball? I went to a hitting clinic at is was all about rotation and an axe style swing.
If timed correctly in Rich system you want to make contact with bent arms but you can extend if your early and need to. In perfect situation the extension would be your follow through in Rich's system. Hope this helps took long time for me to adjust my timing but when you do it's magic!
I believe in your technique. It looks though like you are pulling your head though. Cardinal sin of course. Scares me to teach this bc I don’t want to teach a technique that leads to pulling your head. Any thoughts on that?

If you wanna see how to hit a baseball, watch old film of Henry Aaron or Mickey Mantle, or Stan Musial or Ted Williams. They hit off much better pitching in their days.
43 years too late for me :( but the fundamental mechanics are sound and strangely enough, unify the baseball swing with the tennis forehand with the golf swing. Coil, whip the barrel back and around, contact, then release.
Sir, I love baseball but I wasn’t blessed with the hitting talent. I’m going to get in a cage and practice this and maybe even play some old man baseball again. Thank you.
🤯 Me realizing hitting has to progress to catch up to 95-100 mph fastballs from every big league pitcher now. I’m going to start training my 9yo these techniques and see where this goes. I had an inside out drag and snap swing that worked really well in HS but I started shifting my weight onto my front leg in college and tanked my game. Hopefully this is going to help my son not be like dad 😅
The "Whip" is actually the bat dragging. In no way shape or form should the barrel be wrapped around your neck as he demonstrates. Look carefully at a full speed swing, he swings up through the ball. Of course it works for Judge, he's a freak of nature with herculean srength, he can get away with it. The avg kid cannot perform this consistently and cover the whole strike. It's almost impossible to hit a ball up in the zone with your hands starting low, and with the "tilt" of the bat the entire outer 1/2 of the plate is exposed creating easy flaired foul balls and pop ups. Any decent pitcher can expose this on a consistent basis.

What do you mean by launch? Its not the releasing the hands right?
Do these theories work for slow pitch ?
I was thinking the same thing. Have you heard any answer to that question yet?
Great. No use now!!!!!!! Great instructor.
Will this work hitting a softball?
Where do you get a propeller bat?
Can these principles be applied to the tennis serve?
The tilt only looks weird because he looks straight up sometimes rather than keeping his head down towards the ball.
Can you go over the follow through
Mount Mercy in Cedar Rapids, IA?
Where are you located teacherman? I want to have some lessons… 🙏🙏
At what point do you extend the arms
If timed correctly in Rich system you want to make contact with bent arms but you can extend if your early and need to. In perfect situation the extension would be your follow through in Rich's system. Hope this helps took long time for me to adjust my timing but when you do it's magic!
I believe in your technique. It looks though like you are pulling your head though. Cardinal sin of course. Scares me to teach this bc I don’t want to teach a technique that leads to pulling your head. Any thoughts on that?
He's in his 60's, so I'm sure the neck is a little stiff. Watch when he talks about hitting pitches at different heights, head is on the ball.
I haven't played serious baseball in over 20 years- what is this weird cricket looking training bat they're using?
Would a variation of this swing work in golf?
Hello, with all due respect, could you give the videos a subtitle in Spanish to understand better, please and thank you
You have the ability to adjust the subtitle language in your RUclips settings. Watch the video linked below:

E gusto mucho me gustaría q alguien lo traducir en español xfa gracias
It's a school for necromancy . Hogwarts but with dark magic. My poor elbow can't do that
Wonder if sheff was on to something in the 80’s and 90’s
If you wanna see how to hit a baseball, watch old film of Henry Aaron or Mickey Mantle, or Stan Musial or Ted Williams. They hit off much better pitching in their days.
Would love to see you hit in BP to show your teaching in action
Look his video up teacherman 110 he hiiting line drive all day at 67
43 years too late for me :( but the fundamental mechanics are sound and strangely enough, unify the baseball swing with the tennis forehand with the golf swing. Coil, whip the barrel back and around, contact, then release.
Why are you hips open? Why not swing through level and use legs for elevation.
🐐
Low and inside?
Why the flat bat?
What's up with that?
Good video there you go haters
The big leaguers place the weight on their front leg. The front leg drives the front hip back creating rotation and bat acceleration through the ball.
All these comments and nobody asks about the bat, grr....
I would love to see one video where you don’t talk about Aaron Judge. Gees. Lame swing anyways
