Mythic Odysseys of Theros gave us some new catfolk that are far more ferocious than their distant tabaxi cousins. Where the tabaxi are catfolk, the Leonin are lionfolk with muscular jaws, claws, and resplendent golden manes. These kings of the savannah are brand new to D&D, and while they technically only exist so far in the world of Theros, you can expect some new Leonin characters to roar into your next adventures. Does their pride hold muster? Sharpen your claws and practice your best roar as we go through everything you need to know about Leonin 5e.

    I'm playing a Leonin Paladin.
His name is Mufasa, and he's Lawful Good.
He's fond of conversation, a good joke, and a small drink. He's also really good with kids.
He rarely uses physical violence. If you have the balls to insult him, he'll just glare at you and growl. But if you strike him, he will fight back. His roars can vibrate the air, and make even the most bravest bad guy shit his pants.

Was Leonin "gods=nope" nature ingnored in the setting of game you guys play, or does he have backstory reason to be a Paladin?

Gonna say this now, leonin conquest paladin is pretty strong, being able to lock down numerous enemies and force them to take psychic damage without burning a spell slot is pretty great, you make a group of enemies sit absolutely still and thus make them into easy prey for your party.

Leonin Eldritch Knight / Vengeance Paladin. Lions hate hyenas and this character hates gnolls. Being able to cast shield as a reaction, and use the other spell slots is great. That's especially true when you're using your vow of enmity to attack at advantage.

Going to be playing a Leonin Wild Magic Barbarian in an upcoming campaign! Planning on him being a street tough delinquent, with his mane being a pompadour on top. He's adopted into a well connected family, but likes to leave the house and fight in the streets with his new pride, the street gang he joined up with! Very excited to try out this race!

I have never played DnD and I just made my first DnD character. I came here to get some ideas on how to play my character and you have given me some great ones! My character is a leonin female that is druid/barbarian and she came out very balanced. I started with barbarian and plan to do my character levels 3 barbarian 17 druid in the long run and with totem warrior and 9th level spells the character should play relatively well. The leonin race just gave the character that extra little bit the classes needed. With my size I'm starting off with a great sword, quarter staff and have a few javelin in my equipment. I'm excited to play with this character! There isn't much out there about leonin, thank you for making this video!

Been playing for about 6 years now, only recently came across the Leonin. This is probably my favorite race I have played as so far, rp wise and ability wise.
I play Nero IV, a Ranger/Beastheart (MCDM) just nearing the age of 37, alongside his deinonychus companion Chipp.
Most people assume the tallest and biggest members of adventuring parties to be the most brash, but mine is the most level-headed, making an effort to de-escalate certain situations if at all possible, but should violence be the only option, he has the tools to issue massive damage thanks to the stacking abilities of Hunter Ranger and Hunter Beastheart.
I’ve played many characters, but this is easily my favorite of all time.

I am currently playing a Noble Leonin Kensei monk. With my kensei abilities I get two monk weapons and one can be ranged. So I have a staff with spear heads on each end, a light crossbow for ranged action ( which is killer for a monk to have that option ). Also my kensei abilities allow me to use a bonus action to add bonus damage to ranged attacks when I hit. It’s been really fun. Plus the daunting roar. And other Leonin traits. I am a noble so I am always trying to keep my mane combed with my claws and keep myself clean.

While playing around on Heroforge, my little girl (4) made a Leonin model and so we have been doing research on the lore to make her character. She decided on a rogue and will likely build towards arcane trickster. Looking into the lore, we went with the Ironmane pride.
None of this is optimal 😂 but she does things her way.

I made a leonin barbarian path of wild magic. He was born into a tribe of tabaxi. But being born a leonin is extremely rare (like once every hundred or so year) rare. Here's some advice on roleplaying a Leonin hero/heroine, and creating heroic/villainous Leonin NPCs and this comes from what I know from the lore first presented in Magic The Gathering. Basically if you create a villainous Leonin NPC go with the stereotype of being a super-arrogant/egotistical xenophobe basically Leonin extremists who are most of the time Iconocasts. For creating heroic Leonin NPCs, and/or roleplaying as a Leonin hero/heroine go with the attitude most Leonin have that being cocky, and competitive yes but not super-arrogant/egotistical, and not xenophobic and willing to trust others of other races but still understandably cautious due to that incident involving that one infamous Archon Tyrant.
