  • Warforged 5e Race Guide: www.skullsplit...
Forged as sentient soldiers for a war they never asked to fight, the warforged 5e are the robot race of the D&D multiverse. Technically they should “only” exist in the Eberron setting, but I’ve heard a million and one reasons why they just happen to exist elsewhere. Warforged have been kicking around for quite a while now in unearthed arcana form, but with the release of “Eberron: Rising from the Last War” we have the genuine finished article. How did your robot pals hold up? Let’s gear up and dig into the blueprints as we go through everything you need to know.

A warforged named Plater based off Bender from Futurama
Plater: My name is plater and I used to make armor plates
Human Bard: Were you any good?
Plater: Oh you know it! I could make armor plates that were forty five degrees, forty four degrees, forty six degrees, you name it. But that all changed when I found out what the plates I was making were used for.
Bard: Wow. What Were they used for? Weapon warforged?
Plater: No, more armor plate units. And I'll be dammed if I'm making my replacement.

I view my warforged artificer as a former artillery repair troop, named “barrel” (and if anybody asks, it’s after a gun barrel, not a wooden one) with a dark bronze jaw, dark iron face, and a brown wood for the back middle of his head, engraved with intricate patterns from his time traveling and picking up woodcarving along the way.

A character I've thought about is a warforged gloomstalker ranger (probably named stalker or something like that.) I thought of this to take advantage of the shadows and have the warforged with darker color metals, possibly glowing red eyes, you know to give sort of an evil vibe. But actually be quite friendly possibly with a personality similar to Cayde-6 from Destiny.

I play a warforged war wizard with one level of order domain. His name is sparky, and he was accidentally created by a gnome artificer during construct experimentation. The gnome soon discovered that my warforged had an aptitude for magic and alchemy.
My warforged is also a minor celebrity for having penned “Spark’s Notes” which is a collection of spellcasting manuscripts organized by school for basic cantrips and low level spell casting.
Sparky believes he’s been chosen by Mystra to spread a healthy knowledge and respect for magic. He spends a lot of time teaching townsfolk how to cast useful cantrips like mending or prestidigitation to make day to day work easier.
The order domain level one feature grants you the ability to choose a creature you affect with a spell you cast of first level or higher. You give that creature the ability to use their reaction to make a weapon attack. This can be melee or ranged and against any target they choose. Great if you happen to get in position to grant a rogues sneak attack as a reaction the first round of combat, potentially before they even have their turn.
The +1 bonus AC bonus goes well with the medium and heavy armors I can wear because of the cleric dip.
I’ve taken the alert feat to double down on the war wizard bonus to initiative with an additional +5.
The feature also takes away an opponents advantage on attack rolls against you if you can’t see them. Useful since you can’t see in the dark. Also makes fog cloud much more defensive.
The feat also make it so you can’t be surprised while conscious. Since the warforged doesn’t go unconscious while resting, this effect is always on.
I’ve taken resilient: constitution as a feat as well. This has made concentration saves very reliable. the advantage and resistance on poison saves is great, and most of those saves are also constitution, almost guaranteeing 1/4 to 0 damage depending on the save effect.
I have chosen a number of utility cantrips from the cleric and wizard list to be able to dispel their effects to gain power surge charges too. It’s only worth doing at about 10 or 12 level war wizard and with 20 intelligence.
Stinking cloud is a great spell because it imposes heavy obscurement, and the alert feat makes this translate into just disadvantage on attacks vs the wizard. The warforged also is unaffected by the harmful saving throw because it doesn’t breath. Incredible synergy with race, feat, armor bonuses, and war wizard specially. Very hard to attack, a lot of spells negatives are neutralized vs the caster, if the wizard is hit it has proficiency AND a reaction to add +4 if the save is KNOWN to have failed.
Level 10 war wizard gives +2 to concentration AND saves when concentrating. Am 1 level away from using this myself, but it stacks with so many of the other features. Armor of faith would be a +4 AC and +2 to saves as a level 1 spell slot.
I shouldn’t have had to, but there have been several sessions where I was completely out of spell slots. one session happened where the only thing I could do was get in a creatures face and use the dodge action. I got hit twice that entire session with 4 combat encounters.
I’m also super poor and have no gold. I’ve got quite a few spells I have access to and can copy, but I don’t get discounts for schools. I’m currently trying to figure out ways to generate revenue for scribing spells.

I had first played a Warforged years back in one of my first DnD campaigns in 3rd edition, A basic fighter weilding a demon-faced hammer he would throw around, but I loved the idea of them so much that I planned another character I didn't get to use until recently, a Warforged Bard named Dirge, wielding a saber and a modified Lyre, to essentially play Viking dirges in a doom metal style. His spells appropriately focus on Evocation and Necromancy. So far he's proven to be one of the most enjoyable characters I've ever played.

Since there's no Warforged in Forgotten Realms my DM for a Phandelver campaign made me flavor it to fit FR. I went with being a sentient construct named Maker, created right before the fall of the Netheril Empire and went dormant after the Weave vanished. He was found by a Lantan expedition, brought up to speed on the time he missed since the fall, was helped out of a profound depression after finding out about the state of the world and inducted into the Church of Gond as a Forge Cleric.
Maker wants to elevate the civilized world back to the level of the Netheril Empire, but since the Weave has vanished twice, plus the spell plague... well magic can't be relied upon so he's decided that divine power and technology is the way to do it. He's not going to age, so Maker is playing the long game, picking a small town, village or new settlement to for the Church to support, bringing improvements to people's lives over time until they're a sister city to Sambar, Lantan's capitol. Do that enough times in enough places and you've advanced the technology level of civilization as a whole and brought change to the world.

In my Spelljammer 5e world the Warforged own a galactic empire known as the Imperial Federation of Machines. This is basically a super powerful empire of clockworks who own a large part of realmspace. Anyways, that is how I use them in my world. I like to think Warforge are immortal and I kind of look at them to be the opposite of Wood Woad's. Thanks for the video! I still haven't bought the Eberron book so this was helpful!

I made my first real DnD character and decided on Warforged. My plan is to go Warforged Fighter up to 5 for extra attack, 4 levels of paladin, for radiant strike and Oath of Glory - Inspiring Smite. Then finishing up Fighter. I'm going to be doing Interception and Echo Knight. I want to eventually get the Dwarven Thrower or Azuredge, with a shield so I can be tanky up front, and throw weapons at them from a distance while protecting my party members with my echo/interception abilities. I think it's a well-rounded mid-range tank/dps, with a dash of healing.

This is my favorite race for there's so much you can do with it. I have made a soft-hearted Forge cleric named Forge who is really nothing more than just a healing tank. I have made a childlike Barbarian named breaker, but can't do numbers and p really relies on the party for help. I have had a car salesman con artist artificer that has made fake magic items. I've made a gunslinger who is full of vengeance and spite for being transformed into a warforged and made to kill his family. And I have made a blood hunter that is connected to the Aztec god of war and uses the blood of his victims to work his magic.

About the flexibility of the WF. I am currently part of a campaign where I specifically played the archetypal barbarian. I purposely made him seem dumb and everyone but my DM currently thinks that's all he is.
But he is actually an ex-soldier who was mindlessly serving war forged interests. Even after the Master disappeared, other ranking workforged took their place and the "war effort" moved forward so to speak.
After seeing the abuse that his fellow machines were taking he experienced an existential crisis and was aided by one of the gods in an escape from his rank.
However due to this existential crisis and some calamities that befell him during the escape, he's over processing everything.. seeming dumb and basic, coming off as a simpleton.
Later on envoys of this God are going to approach him and remind him of his previous life, in which he will come to realization that he needs to heal what is broken, becoming partly a war cleric.

I'm running an Artificer in a campaign where the entire party is made up of Warforged. We started as a mercenary unit, specializing in those missions that 'fleshies' would have trouble with like harsh environments, dungeons filled with gas traps, or missions to disease-infested areas. We carry no food...no water...no tents or bedrolls. We don't ride animals because they require food, water, and rest. Our idea of 'camp' is standing in a circle facing out for 6 hours. The DM allowed all of us to have 30' Dark vision at level 3. We're truly a dangerous crew.
