  • Rogues are masters of disguise and subtlety, who lurk in the shadows waiting for the perfect time to make their lethal strike. Warlocks are the signers of arcane pacts, beings who sold their souls or worse for incredible magical powers that would otherwise lie well beyond their mortal reach. Put them together and you get the ninjas of your wildest anime dreams, capable of disappearing into the shadows only to emerge with their dark magical blades already slicing through their foes. Dress for the darkness and grab your pact weapon as we go through everything you need to know.

Phantom Rogue/Undead Warlock is very thematic together.

We are wrapping up a year and a half long campaign soon and I’ve been playing a arcane trickster rogue / Djinn genie warlock multiclass. Last session I was using my genie flight while concentrating on greater invisibility, which allowed me to fly up to the back line mages/archers and sneak attack them, move a little bit, then bonus action hide. If they tried to run, I’d use the sentinel feat to opportunity attack them and root them in place only to rinse and repeat the next rounds until they were dead. I was like the worlds deadliest mosquito.

Soulknife rogue with just a 2-3 level dip into The Great Old One (GOO) Warlock. A regular rogue who obtained/stole an item that granted it a connection to some unknowable being and unlocked their mind to their psionic potential after learning eldritch truths.
I take eyes of the rune keeper and mask of many faces for my invocations, and become a top notch infiltrator. Expertise in deception and persuasion and you can change appearance at will. You can go to a social event unarmed and then assassinate some noble or official with your psi blades, leaving no mark behind and simply changing your face and blending in with everyone else running away when they find their dead body.

I play a swashbuckler-hexblade, pact of the blade. Heavy on swashbuckler, level 5 hexblade. So much fun using a spell slot to sneak attack and then do a bunch of additional damage, then just walk away.

Bugbear Assassin Rogue 3 / Fiend Warlock 17
Scorching Ray does 2d6 per ray, 6 rays at 5th level. Bugbear adds 2d6 to each ray on the first turn if you act before the target(s) for a total of 24d6 at 5th level. Assassinate doubles that to 48d6 if you have surprised the target(s). All for an average of 168 damage. And then you can hurl one of the targets through hell for an additional 10d10 psychic damage.

Assassin/Undead Warlock for the flavor. Add the Alert feat to gain initiative. Get advantage on Eldritch Blast attacks frequently. Great for locking down opponents.

I would love to see your take on a Barbarian/Rogue multiclass. Reckless Sneak Attacks make for decent damage and Bear Totem with Uncanny Dodge or even Evasion gives you incredible staying power.

    • @johnmhuizar

Reckless only works on Strength based attacks unfortunately

@johnmhuizar While that is true, you can use a finesse weapon to deal sneak attacks, but still use strength. All sneak attack says is that the weapon must be finesse, not that the attack has to be made with dexterity.

I am currently playing a swashbuckler genie warlock. Pretty fun. And part of the intention is to soon be able to come out walking from self targeted fireballs. Currently 3 rogue / 4 warlock. Mask of many faces, improved pact weapon and up coming eldritch smite.

Currently playing a swashbuckler/fathomless pirate with pact of chain so instead of a parrot on my shoulder, i have an imp 🤣. Definitely not "optimized", but with Mask of many faces and an invisible familiar, you have oodles of out of combat versatility. you have waterbreathing and swim speed too, but even for a non-nautical campaign, almost everything is of use. can go either melee or ranged. i went melee as the flavor is *chef's kiss*. can even use shadowblade as your concentration spell with your rapier and still get 2 attacks with the 1st being at advantage with your familiar to land sneak attack.

Great rundown on the warlock/rogue multi. I am playing a 1/2 Elf (Drow descent) hexblade/swashbuckler right now. For RP story, I started out with rogue and then switched to warlock lvls. Currently sitting at Rogue 4 / Hexblade 5 and from this point forward, remaining lvls will be warlock. Synergies are really good with CHR and DEX. Sneak attack is almost garennteed each round with the swashbuckler feature or with standard rogue requirements. Anyway, great review, just wanted to share my swashbuckling hexblsde. Having devil sight and darkness spell is a crazy combo. And then add sneaking around on top of it... funny stuff..

playing a swashbuckler/hexblade in my current campaign, have to say the invocations are nutty little power boost add that and some utility spell and you can break the game outside of combat. mask of many faces into an old man, walk into a shop, have an invisible familiar or cast unseen servant and make them knock something over int her back of the shop, pick up what you want when the keep goes to check it out and walk out, mask of many face into someone else, get some expensive gear earlier than normal.

I'm currently playing a roguelock! Phantom rogue/genie warlock. I focused mostly on rogue, though took Pact of the Blade for warlock and as one of my invocations I have Improved Pact Weapon which gives a +1 weapon and the ability to create shortbows, longbows, light crossbows and heavy crossbows.
This is a good utility/combat damage build. It lets you not focus on combat spells to focus on Dexterity or Constitution for combat stats. Genie's Wrath gives an extra 3 damage at the level I'm playing at, which is nice. Wails of the Dead lets you do a bit of damage to another creature you didn't obliterate with your sneak attack. Hex is a good extra bit of damage as well and fits with the Phantom rogue theme. And being able to switch a skill out every day is a wonderful bit of utility. The idea is to balance the amount of dice rolled with raw numbers. It's working really well so far, ~3 sessions into playing the character. If I get a day's forewarning, I can help any member of my party with a skill or tool check to give them advantage, which is a nice bit of support for other players.

Assassinate is great when it works, which is almost never in Adventurer's League and rarely in actual campaigns in my experience. Great for theorycrafting, but not a feature I would build around.
Also, your Scout 17/Fathomless 3 build doesn't take advantage of the Scout's Sudden Strike ability (since you're recommending using the bonus action tentacle instead), so Scout 15/Fathomless 3/Fighter 2 is just better, IMO.

Why not take pact of the blade at 3lvl warlock so that CHA is the only stat that is required? Medium armor +2 Dex is often a solid bump in AC while falling back on spells that hide rogues ULTRA well… Devil Eyes invocation plus darkness means that all of our attacks get sneak attack damage in

Rogue Pact of the Blade OR Chain are a perfect combination. Question is: would your invisible imp assist in flanking, therefore Sneak Attacks in CQC?

Still researching but looking to go down the 3/17 split but with Pact of the Tome. Cantrip scaling is the main idea and while covering my elemental bases with it and EB for Force. It doesn’t need to be overwhelming powerful, just needs to be versatile. It’s actual spell slots all dedicated to either defensive spells or manipulation. Not sure if I should go 3W/17R or the other way around as both get pretty powerful they just miss the last 3 levels that I’ll need to weight against each other. Currently only 1R/2W in the campaign so we’ll see.
I don’t have all the books so DnDBeyond doesn’t allow for a lot of choice in character creation. Charging the same as the physical version of the book for an online only version also hurts the pocket.

Hi im new to the table top verison of DND, but is SoulKnife Rogue + Hexblade Warlock any good? this is a character mainly going to be kind of a spy deception and such.. but would it be better to make CHA the highest here since hexblade will set my attack to CHA or will it still be better if I still go DEX then CHA?
