  • MONK ROGUE MULTICLASS - 5E NINJAS
    Monks are adept warriors of discipline and skill who have trained and honed themselves into perfected instruments. Rogues are agents of shadow and misdirection who can find the perfect opening to plunge the knife. Put them together and you get straight up ninjas!

    My dude. Thank you. I know this is for tabletop, but im definitely using this guide for my first Baldurs Gate 3 playthrough. This is the only video ive found with this specific multiclass build that's this detailed. I have a bad habit of making a ninja type character in every game i play lmao

      Gonna be even stronger in BG3 if you go Thief, since Fast Hands gives you an entire extra bonus action. This makes a 3 level dip into Rogue SO strong, especially for Monks.

    Unarmed Fighting actually DOES NOT restrict you to Str only. Since any Unarmed Strike you use, CAN use Dex instead of Str. RAW, that's what Martial Arts allow

      I thought monks attacked using wisdom, but I could be wrong.

    • @Finnssssss
      @Finnssssss Год назад +7

      That's not the issue though, the issue is that unarmed attacks whether using strength or dexterity are not finesse based and you can't make sneak attacks with unarmed attacks.
      Also this is part of the Monk martial arts feature only. Anyone else using unarmed strikes, even with the fighting style use strength to hit.
      It means if you gained proficiency in all martial weapons and designated a battle axe or a longsword as a monk weapon, you could then use Dexterity instead of strength to hit with it but unless the weapon is finesse there's no sneak attack.
      The only real benefit to this is you can use the longsword or battle axe in 2 hands getting the d10 damage dice while using Dexterity to hit and damage.

    • @leodouskyron5671
      @leodouskyron5671 Год назад +3

      The Unarmed fighting style says “1d6 + Str” or D8 if you don’t have weapons or shield and 1d4 if you using while grappling.
      Also, it is mostly (optionally) useless because it is not finesse weapon for the rogue or dex based for the Monk. That said, if you rolled and have a high strength in your stats you certainly can use it on a 2 level monk dip.

      @@rcschmidt668 Monks add WIS to their AC but can use Dexterity instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of their unarmed strikes and monk weapons.

    • @Finnssssss
      @Finnssssss Год назад

      @Leodous Kyron all Monk weapons are str or dex regardless if the weapon is finesse or not.
      If you designate a long sword or battle axe for example as a monk weapon, you can use dex to hit and damage with it. Nothing says you can't make use of the versatile property same as a quarterstaff either and wield it 2-handed for 1d10.
      Finesse means zero to a monk, it only matters for sneak attack qualification
      You of course still need proficiency in a weapon before you can designate it as a monk weapon.
      The designating of a monk weapon was just a Kensei thing until Tasha's. The original UA Kensei didn't have the heavy and special property restrictions so you could designate a great sword, great axe, maul or polearm and take the GWM/PAM feats while attacking with Dex allowing you to also qualify for Elven Accuracy..that was broken af lol
      Now only Hexblades and Battlesmiths can pull this off.
      I have a level 17 half-elven 12 Hexblade/5 Whisper Bard with a 22 Charisma and a +2 Glaive with 1d6 extra cold damage that has a base damage of 1d10+1d6+24 or 33 average per hit before Curse, Hex, Eldritch Smite or Whisper Inspirations come into play.
      To say my full buffed crits with this character are absolutely ridiculous is an understatement.

    A couple of overlooked Archetypes that work well in these multiclasses are Kensei, for the Long bow sniper and Soulblade for a free D6weapon you can through and bonus psionic dice that you only expend if the roll succeds.

    Soulknife would be a great Roguish Archetype for this build. Being a Simple Weapon, Psychic Blades can be used as a Monk Weapon. And it has the Finesse and Thrown properties, allowing you to use it for Sneak Attacks both in melee and at range.
    Plus it’s always in your hand when you want to Sneak Attack and conveniently gone whenever you want to unleash a flurry of blows. Also, being able to substitute your Martial Arts Die for its standard d6 gives you way to increase its damage at higher Monk levels.

  • @leodouskyron5671

    My favorite is Soulknife 14 Kensai 6. Start Rogue to 4. Go monk 6. Finish at Rogue 14. You want to get magic tattoos to go with concept and the basic Spellwrought Tattoos should be added as possible.
    You get a lot of functionality in a kit that means you always are very well armed and armored. Since the Soulknife is a weapon you can take it as your melee and use the Long Bow for very long range attacks. As you get to 6 monk, your third weapon not only lets you use a short sword but your knife is now magical. As you go up to Rogue 9 you can tp and will always hit. Finally at the end you can go invisible as an action and go right up to a target and stunning strike.

    My favorite character build is set to end as a 3rd level Gloomstalker, 6th level Shadow Monk, and 11th level of Soul Blade Rogue. Alternatively, taking Gloomstalker to 4th level to get another ASI. Either way, you end up with 5 expert skills and possibly reliable talent. Probably ac 20 without armor and a +10 to initiative, and a 19DC on Stunning Blow. You also get favored enemy and potentially Hunters Mark. The Shadow Monk has some of the best spells for rogues. You also get unlimited Shadow Misty Step. Soul Blades provide another teleport option, though it burns Psy Die. You have at least 60' darkvision, access to all martial weapons and a fighting style, and the power of the Gloomstalker Dread Ambush and Umbral Sight. So, tag your target with Hunters Mark, you will have a 55' movement speed, 3 normal attacks on your first round, and flurry of blows. Bare in mind that Soul Blade is 2 attacks per attack action, so you're looking at 6 attacks in total. This build gives you 4 or 5 ASIs, not including any from race or background. You only need Dex and Wisdom, so you should have plenty of opportunity to take feats. Some suggestions would include: Piercer, Mobile, Sharpshooter, Fighting iniate (especially if you're going thrown dagger to get both dueling and thrown weapon styles, giving you a +4 on your thrown dagger damage plus 14 if you also take Sharpshooter.) Crossbow Expert (Not so much for the hand crossbow benefits but to be able to use ranged attacks if you're in melee range of an enemy.) Martial adept could also add battle control or utility options, though my preference would be Brace, and Riposte to open the possibility of a second sneak attack in the round. You also have 2 extra languages and telepathy and your own version of guidance in Psi-Bolstered Knack and Homing Strike.
    A 3rd build variation would add fighter into the mix for another fighting style, a free self heal, and if you want, you can get Action Surge, and potentially a martial archetype. My recommendations would be Runic Knight, Battle Master, Champion, or Echo Knight if that's used at your table.

      What was the level order for this

  • @jackala2783
    @jackala2783 Год назад +3

    Check out the (Swashbuckler) Rogue combined with a (Way of Mercy) Monk. Basically, you no longer have to worry about Attacks of Opportunity while simultaneously attacking multiple targets and moving away from them. Oh, and the character can get Advantage on any target almost at will for getting in a Sneak Attack.
    As for taking Fighting Initiate: Unarmed Fighting at level 1 (as for a Variant Human), it's is actually useful up to Monk level 11 when a Monk's unarmed damage naturally becomes 1d8. At that point, the Fighting Initiate feat can be changed over to one more useful, like Blind Fighting. But until then, the Rogue/Monk at character level 4 has the potential of a main attack of 1d8 (i.e., rapier as a Dedicated Weapon) with Sneak Attack damage of 1d6 _and_ immediately get two more 1d8 attacks (available at the 3rd Level of Monk) by using Flurry of Blows with a Ki point. With Extra Attack at the 5th level of Monk, this becomes two 1d8 rapier attacks (add in Sneak Attack on one of them) plus the two 1d8 attacks from Flurry.
    Naturally, all the above assumes all attacks hit. Even if they don't, keep in mind that a 3rd Level Rogue (Swashbuckler)/3rd Level (Way of Mercy) Monk can use one of the Flurry of Blow attacks to self-heal or heal a nearby companion instead of doing damage with it and then skip away from the target while laughing at the target's inability to strike back at the Monk/Rogue.
    And if you really, *really* want to move across a battle area as well as negate completely hostile Sleep spells, make the Monk/Rogue a Wood Elf. This will remove the Variant Human's starting feat but the feat can be taken at 4th level, assuming the character's attributes are comfortably high enough to exchange the 4th level ASI with the feat. Wood Elves also get Dark Vision, the ability to try to Hide even when only lightly obscured, and never needing to sleep at night.

      If you're going to go 2 levels in Rogue, I'd suggest also going to 3 or only going 1. Cunning Action is going to clash pretty heavily with Hand of Harm or Flurry of Blows on your bonus action, assuming you're still attacking with a weapon to get Sneak Attack. But if you go to 3 and take Swashbuckler, you get a much more reliable method of adding Sneak Attack to your weapon attack and also effectively get the Mobile feat. I can see what you're going for and the ability to easily slip in and out of melee without having to use Cunning Action to do so will be a benefit.

    I know this is sort of off topic, but I'm currently playing a 10th level Shadar-Kai Arcane Trickster Rogue(4)/Bladesinger Wizard(6) with Elven accuracy build. Its honestly really fun being absolutely unhittable in cqc as you chunk high HP enemies by combining sneak attack + spirit shroud + booming blade + extra attack and gaining triple advantage with Steady Aim and Find Familiar

    Way of the Shadow monk gets Shadow Step at 6th level allowing you to misty step up to 60 feet (without using spell slots or ki) and you have advantage on your next attack which plays right into the rogue's sneak attack. So, Shadow Step, Sneak Attack, Disengage. Rinse and repeat.

  • @Finnssssss

    If you are dual wielding daggers or any melee weapons with the thrown property for that matter, you automatically get to throw another thrown weapon on your bonus action as per normal dual wielding. You do not have to spend any resources.
    RAW dual wielding flat out states that any melee weapon with the thrown property can be thrown for any of your attacks.
    Your weapons still need the finesse property to use Dexterity with them, your off-hand weapon still needs to be light unless you took the DW Feat and you still need the dual wielding fighting Style to apply your ability mod to your off-hand throw damage.

    I really don't like Monk/Rogue multiclasses as there is way too much overlap. I could see taking a single starting level as Rogue before going Monk but that's about it. I'd much rather do a Barb/Rogue or Barb/Monk.
    That said there is one Monk/Rogue multiclass I've been interested in playing, but never had the chance. That would be the 'Way of the Astral Self 6/Inquisitive X(14)' Monk/Rogue. It doesn't come online until 9th level. You start as Rogue 1 and take Expertise in Insight. You then take Monk to 6th to get access to Visage of the Astral Self which for 1 Ki point gives you Advantage on all Insight checks for 10 minutes, among other things. Then at 9th when you get Rogue to 3 you get Insightful Fighting which allows you to use a bonus action to make a contested Insight check vs the enemy's Deception check to allow you to apply Sneak Attack even without Advantage for 1 minute. You can just choose to apply Sneak Attack damage on every single turn as long as you don't have Disadvantage. I've always thought this could be an interesting character. You could also make them quite a bit of a skill monster. At level 1 as a Variant Human you could take the Skill Expert Half-feat and start with 8 skill proficiencies and Expertise in 3 or 2 plus Thieves' Tools. Perception, Insight, and Investigation are relevant to the Inquisitive subclass and your Astral Visage also gives you advantage on Intimidation checks. Remaining 4 skills I'd pick Stealth, Survival for tracking, and probably Deception and Persuasion to boost social skills. I'd take Expertise in Insight, Investigation, and Thieves' Tools then Intimidation and Stealth at Rouge 6.
    If I were starting with Point Buy stats I would go Str 8, Dex 16, Con 14, Int 10, Wis 16, Cha 10. For ASIs I'd take Sharpshooter at Monk 4 to make up for the 3D6 Sneak Attack dice you miss out on from the Monk levels, then I'd max Dex and Wis in that order.
    I think it would be a good character to play if your adventuring group is very small. That plus a frontline Paladin and a Wizard would be a pretty tight unit.

      Overlap? Do you mean 7th level Evasion? The easy answer is to avoid that one level is to take 6 levels in one class, 12 levels in the second class, and add 2 levels of fighter for Fighting Style and Action Surge. No overlap!

      For anyone reading this, no, it can't. Monks can use Dexterity for their Martial Arts attacks, but that doesn't make them finesse weapons for the purposes of Sneak Attack.

    The scout archetype for rogue is garbage. In the video you say ‘skirmisher’ allows you to get away if they move next to you (within five feet). That’s not what the feature says. The feature says you can move if they END THEIR TURN within 5 feet. So an enemy can come up to you and kill you; skirmisher would trigger with your corpse

  • @Xynth25
    @Xynth25 Год назад

    I've only played this once, both classes really want you to stay single-classed in order to maximize their damage. I started Rogue 1 and just went Shadow Monk from there, I really loved the extra skills and the two Expertise but didn't see much value in delaying from there. Cunning Action is great but interferes with your bonus action Unarmed Strike/Flurry and in a pinch you can still get your Dash or Disengage for 1 ki. Assassin is the big draw for this theoretical multiclass but in all honesty Assassin is *highly* overrated. You'll have the awesome ability to oneshot guards and mooks but DMs aren't going to let you liquify their bosses more than once. I'd actually say Swashbuckler is going to be the strongest Rogue subclass round-by-round for your ninja, though Arcane Trickster and Thief both have a lot of flavor and fun toys.
    From the other angle, I don't see any value in dipping Monk for Rogue. Like...at all. There's nothing you can't get more easily in other classes with fewer drawbacks.
    If I was doing a full level 20 build and wanted the ninja flavor, I'd probably still only take the 1 level of Rogue at first level, go 8 levels of Shadow Monk because you *desperately* want to max Dex ASAP, and then take 4 levels of Ranger (Gloomstalker) before going back to Monk for the rest. But for most games, you're looking at just Rogue 1/Shadow Monk X.
