      You should quote the spell and press your DM for the information the spell gives you, from memory I know for a fact you learn the school of the magic so you can figure out the nature of the magic.

      @@imaplaygames633 yeah I've had players depend on that so it's like. that invocation is really REALLY good. the only thing I was allowing that isn't strictly speaking in the rules is allowing an arcana check once the school of magic has been determined (use the same rules as counterspell for dc) to figure out which specific spell you're detecting.
      coz yeah you're definitely able to tell that the platemail you found has abjuration runes on it (it's enhanced. this is +2 plate) and transmutation magic on it, which the players get iffy about so, dc 18 arcana check and it's strahd's animated armor haha.
      it lets me run really mean traps on them and if they forget to detect magic (they almost never forget) and if they fail to determine what exactly is going on (which DOES actually happen) we get fun.

      @@waffleswafflson3076 While that's a fun way of getting revenge at the end of the day tabletop RPGs are about having fun together so really you should work with your DM to get what you want out of the spell and that's vague information rather than a "Yes there is magic". If the issue persists then we cast the strongest spell Talk To Your Dungeon Master.

    I love Green Flame Blade and/or Booming Blade on Rogue/Caster multi classes. They negate the loss to Sneak Attack from the multi class, grant you a magical damage type, and provide some AOE or Stun Lock options. Grab the Mobile feat and you're a speedy little stinker, rushing in to slash people then bolting off, and if they try to follow you? Zap!

    My first Bard turned into a Lore Bard/ Pact of the Tome Warlock (Great Old One). I ended up taking the Book of Ancient Secrets invocation, and the adventure ended at 11th level as a Bard 6/Warlock 5. I had more cantrips and spells than I knew what to do with, including Message. Eldritch Blast was the very last cantrip I took because I literally couldn't think of another cantrip I would want that I didn't already have.

      Hexblade is the optimal choice however I'm partial to the swashbuckler/ fathomless multi class. Gives you a pirate vibe , and since you don't have to worry about using cunning action to get away you can use the tentacle of the Deeps to attack as a bonus action. Not as big as smiting or thirsting blade but with a booming blade on the rapier and the tentacle attack you are doing decent damage with very little resources

      @@glitchking666honestly hexblade swashbuckler is one that I really like, since you get the charisma initiative from swashbuckler too. It allows you to just tunnel charisma and not really have to worry as much about dex (since I think you get medium armor proficiency from hexblade too)
      That's really a preference thing though, I think there's a couple different warlock subclasses that go really well with swashbuckler specifically, which I love.

    After witnessing the Bard in the campaign I'm Mastering use Message very inteligently to basically exchange information with players and NPCs over distance and in secret, also the Cleric and the Warlock chose to take it (after going Magic Initiate).
    They are basically always using it between each others like they have a walkie-talkie always available that only them can hear and this justify incredibly well the discussion they do at the table when not wanting to involve unwanted listeners.
    And it's funny how, as it's a one-person communication, they usually repeat their message to the third interlocutor while fingergunning each other and coming up excuses to justify their gestures to the NPCs present

    • @ohmygoditisspider7953
      @ohmygoditisspider7953 7 месяцев назад

      extremely cool thematically. you don't get a lot of slots anyway and could be spending your spells on out of combat stuff too. it's not horrible.
      wait, couldn't you cast shield while raging? hexblades get shield. I know a lot of people are tired of that but. they *do* get it. I think I'd like to see a hexblade/zealot or undead/ancestor.
      thank you for that cool idea. if you ever try it and remember this, I'd love to hear about it.

    • @TwilitbeingReboot
      @TwilitbeingReboot 7 месяцев назад +1

      RAW, you can't cast or concentrate on spells while your rage is active.
      My current build (not yet tested in play, and built to start at level 6) has three levels of Eagle Totem Barbarian and three of Celestial Warlock. Both my patron and my totem spirit are the same entity, a Ki-rin. Celestial grants a decent pool of bonus action healing that doesn't need a spell, and Eagle Totem makes it easier to maneuver around in Rage and not have to face-tank as much melee damage, striking from a slight distance with her lance.
      Due to relatively low Con, she also wears medium armor - an option Barbarians _do_ get proficiency in if you want it - and would ideally set up Armor of Agathys before hitting rage.

    • @ohmygoditisspider7953
      @ohmygoditisspider7953 7 месяцев назад

      @@TwilitbeingReboot ah see I thought you only couldn't concentrate. Which isn't great but still has plenty of utility noncon stuff for warlock, is fine.
      hm. I think genie and fathomless might also work. hadn't concerned celestial. I like medium armor/shield whenever possible. barb gives you that right? so you don't NEED to take hexblade. quarterstaff is a strength weapon so, works with rage, counts as an arcane focus, is versatile so you can use with shield.
      you *could* do that, but, you aren't indicating you're having a lot of trouble or whatever and that makes me happy. the idea such a weird class is working for you and that you might be having fun makes me feel a bit nice.

    One of my favorite characters, who I sadly only got to play for a short time, was a dragonborn pact of the chain great old ones warlock. His name was Trin, and his familiar was a pseudodragon named Woundlicker. His patron was a half-born eldritch deity, who his parents and the rest of their cult tried to birth from its sleeping state, but failed. The ritual called for the energy of a divine being to be siphoned, but they were convinced that they could use a green dragon egg and birth an eldritch-infused green dragon to protect and help expand their forest enclave. Trin's parents used him in the ritual in an attempt to bind him as a human rider and controller of the dragon.
    Instead, the ritual failed to pull enough energy from the green dragon egg, so pulled the energy of all of the cultists, killing them, and still only having enough power to transform the eldritch entity into a massive, semi-draconic fetus, bound to the now-hatched tiny dragon, destined to never grow beyond the size or capabilities of a pseudodragon, and the boy, who had been transformed into his own dragonborn form.
    After feasting on the corpses of the cultists, the pair tottered off into the forest, learning to hunt and survive and use their new eldritch powers.

    I was 5lvls Swashbuckler Rogue/ warlock (wanted Hexblade but because of disagreement with my DM ended up Feylock).
    Sadly I perished in River Styx at lvl 8, but this combo have a really nice glass canon potential. At lvl 10 you have Booming Blade + 3d6 sneak attack + maybe Spirit Shroud + Eldrich Smite and when you hit something... boy you hit hard.
    Taking different Warlock Patron kinda opened my eyes to different tactic because I had to focus on Dex to attack... But that's ok because spells I used didn't really rely much on my charisma. And as Tabaxi with his ratial features (temporary speed boost and climb speed) I would run into combat, flank, STAB! and run away (because Swashbuckler do not trigger opportunity attack if he attacks someone).
    Heh... Shame I wasn't able to draw his full power.

Hungering blade is extra attack at home and eldritch smite gives you extra damage on the first hit and knocks the target prone allowing sneak attack on the second hit due to advantage. Not to mention with pact of the blade you get any melee weapon you want so a rapier or other finesse weapon is right there for the taking.

    5 assassin rogue 3 draconic sorcerer. Quickcast booming blade then ready it to cast it with your reaction. Also by sorcerer level 3 you get invisibility which will help getting surprise on enemies from time to time. The guy said he wanted to be combat mostly and mostly rogue in combat. You suggested a more hybrid kind of build, which is also great and makes good content, but strays a bit from the target.

    I wanna make a 'summoner' character (I basically want to be a Pokémon trainer) but I'm not really sure how to do it. The earliest 'summoning' spell you can get is find familiar however it's not a spell that you can easily make a whole build around and the next time you can get 'summoning' spells is when you reach level 5 and get access to 3rd level spells and that's too large of a level gap (at least for me). So far all I can think of is to be a pact of the chain warlock and then flavour the subclass abilities to be 'summoning' something to do attacks. I could also flavour spells but that isn't what I want, I could also play as a shepherd Druid but that would significantly limit the types of monsters I could summon. Necromancy is also an option but it's not the route I want to take

    Hey, im fairly new to dnd, and I'd like any imput on a character idea. I wanted to make a character that is basically Teddy Roosevelt a guy with a heart and mind almost as big as his bench press, specifically his hunting days where he would hunt animals have them taxidermed and donated to museums, I feel a ranger might fit this but I understand rangers are a bad class and the strong man idea might not work well for range. Any thoughts are appreciated.
    After making this comment, I thought of an idea for a ranged strong man, I don't know if anything like this even exists, but a harpoon gun used to reel enemies into melee range for the kill sounded interesting to me.

      if you want to play a ranger, go for it! just ask your DM about using the version from Tasha’s cauldron of everything instead of the player’s handbook - the Tasha’s rangers (and especially the newer subclasses) are way better than the version of the ranger the internet likes to harp on.
      you’re right that rangers lend themselves well to being dexterity based, and therefore don’t tend to benefit a ton from having a high strength score. i don’t personally know a lot about making a strength based ranger work, but i’m sure it’s possible.
      otherwise, you can still totally describe your character as muscular, but if you really want them to be mechanically strong, you could look into fighter or paladin (oath of the ancient is the specific subclass that came to mind for me. its spell list has some nature themed stuff that could work well for a hunter character).

    The party had a TPK the 2nd session after I joined but I had built a level 3 warlock to come in with n she had the infernal patron n pack of the tome. I was also planning on taking Magic Initiate to gain more cantrips n by level 10 I would’ve have my max of 10 cantrips. Knowing that her spells would deplete quick (even if they regenerate on short rest) so having tons of utility in n out of battle with cantrips was key. She had also just gotten infected with lycanthropy n my DM would’ve let me keep it n just have to deal with the fact I’d be extremely hostile when the transformations take over until I learn to master them n I might kill or be killed by the party. She was themed around having made her pact to gain immortality so immunity to nonsilver n nonmagic weapons would’ve been perfect. But that was the first session with them n I needed to survive the first transformation on the full moon to gain the effects in human form but that was over 20 days away in game n we died 2 days later to giant spiders cuz the party were idiots n despite wut my character would’ve done I stayed n tried to save them n died too

    Hot take: spending all your invocations on Eldritch Blast is a mistake. Warlock gives you so much interesting stuff & E Blast is already great on its own that I personally can’t stand the thought of mainlining it
