LIONS, TIGERS, AND CATFOLK, OH MY!
Wanderers from a far-off land, precocious minstrels and thieves, the Tabaxi 5e race are the quintessential catfolk of the D&D multiverse that we got introduced in "Volo's Guide to Monsters". Tabaxi range from lion-esque noble felines to mangy alley cat pickpockets and everything in between. Tabaxi can make for some wonderfully flavorful and fun characters, so let’s take these cats out of the bag and go through everything you need to know.

The reason Khajiit are so close to Tabaxi is because they ARE Tabaxi! XD The entire Elder Scrolls Universe was created from a Homebrew D&D that a group of Bethesda devs. were a part of
Juuuuusssssttttt legally distinct enough to not be sued :)
A good “tail”
😂
the mark of a fine bard indeed.
Currently rolling a Tabaxi Monk, drunken fist. 3' 5" with a gambling problem.
Same, but mine's Sonic.
in my first DnD game im playing a tabaxi barbarian named Vincent. He was born and raised in a circus by his mother. The beautiful tigress bard played the Lyre to support some of the various graceful circus acts. At one of the towns they visited she met a lion (or liger, i havent decided) with Lycanthrope. The two hit it off (another player having been good friends with Vincent's mother being her wingman) and not long after leaving the town for their next performance, she found she was pregnant. Unable to send word or find the man again she raised her Liger half-lycanthrope son alone (at lvl 3 for barbarian i got to choose the beast sub class). Vincent became the circus strong-man, his strength stat being 18 (+4). One day at a town they were purchasing supplies for their next travel and a stranger aproached Vincent with some produce as a "gift". The fruits were poisoned but Vincent didn't know. During their next travel his mother discovered the fruit and was the first to eat some. She quickly fell ill and died. Some of the circus crew blame Vincent for his mother's death, Vincent feeling quite guilty as well. The campaign will start with us about to leave the circus and meet the other 2 players. the DM might do something fun with the unknown father, we'll see
Wow, I think you gave an idea for a character of my own. I don't think I'll make him a player character, but would you mind if I incorporated him into my own world?
I'm also doing a tabaxi barbarian with a history of circus!
That's cool. I had one that was a Path of the Beast Barbarian that had that anime style claws or teeth get longer. Now I play a shadow monk/rogue assassian that can catch anything! Lol
For those coming from the Anime/Manga side, I recommend the Catfolk of the classic "Escaflowne" which has the equivalent of Tabaxi and Leonin as your reference.
I'm currently playing a Tabaxi Warlock, Pact of the Great Old One. Think Serval Cat from a desert climate. RP with a weird syntax, call other people by a descriptive term (I refer to our party's Tiefling Swashbuckler as "the Dark One" or "the Slippery One"- his sexual proclivities and penchant for dropping items at key moments). The Pact of the Great Old One lets me really dial up the creepy/unsettling factor coupled with his weird speaking mannerisms. Love this race.
One of my favorite races in D&D.
I am playing a Tabaxi Barbarian. Just running in swinging a great axe and smashing face, but going path of the zealot. Super fun and interesting so far!
Late to the party but I had to share my Tabaxi rogue scout/ trickery domain cleric, “Shattering Wind.” Snow leopard pattern with a chaotic good alignment and a taste for delivering a particularly humorous brand of justice towards those who need it
I've never been interested in more exotic race choices and have only really played humans, elves, & half-elves, but man, I am falling in love with Tabaxi!
This was a good primer vid! I'd love an hour long lore deep dive haha.
Huzzah!
Just finished a Tabaxi Monk build. Using the new rule from Tasha's moved the +1 to Wis! Madness!!
Im planning a rogue tabaxi and this was so helpful
For a random campaign, I rolled a tabaxi paladin noble. I made him the owner of a silk trade protecting his business, and I RP like Prince John from the Disney animated Robin Hood. Yes, dex fighter.
When your DM lets you play a nine tailed Tabaxi and everyone on the internet goes 'HEY IT'S AHRI!' when you draw her -_-
Nice
whats the lore behind your nine tailed tabaxi?
About to play a Swashbuckler Rogue Tabaxi with the Pirate background. Her name is Gale of the Wind and she’s the ambassador for her crew. I can’t wait to play her! I think Tabaxi are perfect for a rogue
I also have a Swashbuckler Tabaxi Rogue with the pirate background, his name is Morgan LeFey. He's currently a backup for when my fighter either dies or retires.
The Tabaxi Barbarian is surprisingly effective!
If there is one thing Barbs want to do it is get into the enemy's face on the first round of combat. A 40 ft movement speed, coupled with Feline Agility and the Feral Instinct feature from Tasha's means that you can do that in nearly every battle you will face. That's 40 + 20 x 2.
That's a 120 ft movement speed and you're still able to attack.
Their latest iteration in Volo's also gives them a climbing speed equal to their walking speed. So even if the enemy is up high, you can still reach them.
This might be the perfect place to seek help building my next character. For Rime of the Frostmaiden, I want to build a bard. I love the idea of a reclusive snow leopard clan of Tabaxi, who have sent out an envoy to find out what is affecting their homeland. The problem is, I am torn between the college of swords or the college of lore. A blade dancer wielding two scimitars, fighting and casting in a capoeira-esque dance fighting style. Or an innately curious, lore driven cat, uninterested in anything but the truth of the matter, seeking only to heal the land for his people.
Anyone have any thoughts?
Our vote? The curious cat. Really like that as a reason for lore bard. Huzzah!
Rolled a tabaxi dex cleric (flavored as shaman) with rogue 2 dip a while back, and he's been a total blast to play. Cunning action + cat dashes give so much mobility while doing cleric things, an insane amount of skill proficiencies, and he does a lot of pseudo-ranger work. RP wise, so many opportunities to give flavor to otherwise mundane encounters.
the art on your thumbnails is great!
elves are also +2 Dexterity and 30 or 35 movement depending on subrace
This was a good yarn.
I have a tabaxi who never uses his real name, or just rarely, his name is Whiskers the clown, a clown rouge who went to thievery after his adoptive parents died to a horrible circus accident (one a clown, the other a kinda hudini escape artist) lo and behold he was pre-trained to steal and break in, also hes really fluffy and has polka-dots dyed into his fur :3
A clown tabaxi? Interesting!
I haven't been able to play as him yet, but I had a tabaxi NPC in my fantasy prohibition era chicago campaign who was a literal cartoon character in real life
cartoon logic worked on him and everything, plus he was cursed by fairies to have a literal bottomless pit for a stomach
If it’s a good story they want, they’ll be my Spartan Army in Theros
New player currently building tabaxi rogue/arcane trickster and its shaping to be a ton of fun
I sooo wanna play a housecat Tabaxi-
Huzzah!
I have a tabaxi ranger patterned in red fox fur. He's chaotic good... yes I got inspired by Robin Hood...
I’m making a quiet but curious forest gnome that was raised by tabaxi. I’m looking forward to being able to finally play her. Oh and she is a bard and her tabaxi family gave her her first ukulele and bought her the books she asked for to learn magic. She’s a cutie and s bit of a weirdo too. So absolutely perfect.
Umm Felifolk were introed in Mystara (Rakasta) by Bruce Heard
I actually love this class now, I play as a Minitaur, and now I use a Wizard Tabaxi that got named. (✨Skrunkly✨)
This is very helpful, though I had already given the character the name "mike"
I'm gonna say he got adopted or something
Funny enough I'll also be running a barbarian tabaxi, but going as an unarmed espionage brute for another local ruler, I'll have to update how it turns out since our session zero is next month.
howd it turn out?
Are you planning a Grung video too? I like the detail in the video, explains the race really well building a hero.
We're not planning one currently; they don't seem to be an official race? Or did we miss them in a book?
SkullSplitter Dice there’s a book out, I’m just intrigued to hear your take on it.
www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/one-grung-above
I’m about to play/do, idrk what it’s called, but my first DND session, and I wanna use this race I think
In school we have a Dungeons and Dragons club I’m a Tabaxi druid named Galaxy star
Nice Sandy! What type of druid did you pick?
I really enjoy your videos. They’re super knowledgeable with lots of splashes of humor. I just recently fell in love with this race and you really help me with on how to build it. A follow up question if you will? For the paladin, what weapon style would best suit it?
Really depends on what role you’re looking to play…
@@SkullSplitter thank you for the response. I’m just wondering about things like two handed fighting versus one hand and one shield or two weapon fighting. Would any particular weapon style be better for somebody with a higher dexterity and medium armor?
Apologies for delay, busy season with the dice stuffy. For some reason, these don't show up in the phone app.
It still really depends on what role you need to fill; if you want to do damage, go two weapon, if you need to be tanky, go shield. Obviously this can change based on your comp and the situation, but what does your team need?
@@SkullSplitter no need to apologize. You’re a busy man at a busy time. Thank you for responding at all. Honestly, I don’t have a team or anything. I’m just a big fan. I have a weird habit of building the same character across all of my platforms. This means DND, Skyrim, and anything else I come across. The closest I come to playing on a team is me building a campaign for me and my wife and my daughter. I have a dungeons and dragons board game. Lol
Ahhh, no worries. Yea, I personally try to figure out a niche or two to solve within a party, which helps you be connected to them in some way. Huzzah!
so a tabaxi bard is a perfect fit huh
Thanks for explaining the Tabaxi now I kann pretend like I'm a D&D expert in front of my player ho wants to play one🤣
So basically most tabaxi have adhd :D
What are your thoughts of a Tabaxi Swords Bard with Hexblade dip?
Go for it!
5:55 and the elf
Doh! Yes...
Neco is pronounced with a short vowel sound, just like Necco Wafers.
Tabaxi has wares if you have coin.
The dex rate is great, just really sad that sont have subraces for wis and int that you could play a bit wider class choice.
Tabaxi make great Monks.
AHAHHAHHAHHAHAHHAAHj CATS 2019!! #SHADE
I am multi classing as a paladin artificer (once I get to level 3 paladin I’m taking oath of the forge) I don’t know how it’ll go but I hope well
A mobile paladin (which tabaxi will enable) could be very scary. What's their name?
@@SkullSplitter unconventional name for a tabaxi she is Chitali (chE-tal-E) of the deep cavern clan she has faded orange and yellow fur with spots of brown
Khajiit! :)
Khajiit has wares if you have coin!
Hi, so I have a question for curiosity. I have never played dnd and I don't know if I would have the opportunity to play. However, I am trying to figure out a build for a Tabaxi Fighter who later would learn magic. At the beginning I was thinking about Eldritch Knight since it sounded cool. But then I realize I would need INT and Tabaxi doesn't help me with it. I was planning to do it anyway and put a lot of INT, since I am stubborn and I want to stay a Tabaxi Fighter and I still want to do magic, however I felt bad not using my bonus in +2 DEX and +1 CHA. I think I can use my + 2 DEX for dual wielding and AC (and other stuff I still don't know a lot) so I wouldn't be wasting it to much, however, my CHA would be non existing if I try to go for a INT Tabaxi. I was thinking instead in multiclassing and use that +1 CHA for either Sorcerer or Warlock (or even both since Sorclock sounds cool) since their kind of magic use CHA instead of INT. So, several questions, can an Eldritch Knight merge well with a Sorlock or if is to OP, just sorcerer or warlock? If I want to multiclass any of those, should my Tabaxi Fighter stay Fighter and not take The Eldritch Knight subclass? Is there an Eldritch Knight equivalent but with warlock so I can drop INT and still have the benefit of Eldritch Knight? Or should I do it anyway using the rules of cool. For now my Fighter , since I don't know if I would need INT or not, is +2STR +2CHA +1DEX +1CON +1INT -1WIS. Should I drop INT like WIS and level up more a different modifier? I don't know if I would ever play but one never know.
did you figure out a character? how did you learn all of that if you never played? just wondering because i never played but trying to build a character anyway
im making a tabaxi sorcerer with the haunted one background and im still looking for ideas. if anyone has ideas please reply!!
I was considering being a necromancer tabaxi, with a haunted one backstory too, but I don’t know if a necromancer works well with tabaxi tho
Tabaxi has wares if you has coin.
I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow in the knee.
What are Tabaxi names ?
"Nee-ko"
so leonis pretty much are a sub race of Tabaxi?
Currently playing as a khajiit/tabaxi now. Rogue/hermit-- weird, I know.
Her obsession is an adolescent kitten who she claims to be her younger alfiq brother. But the rest of the party thinks he's just a normal housecat she adopted, because he never speaks. This suspicion is understandable, because she fried her brain accidentally ODing on skooma, and has some memory loss. Regardless, she dotes on him endlessly, and brings him everywhere.
I will never accept a catfolk with human feet, rather than elongated heels. It annoys me that so many people overlook this detail.
Is warrior cats based on tabxi lore?
The bounce is 2 strength
So is a Munchkin Tabaxi build a no go? Just the big cats?
As a smol kittens I say nyo. You can be a little kitty.
Would they make a good fighter?
They can! The ability to close distance (or retreat) via feline agility is super useful on a fighter. Their pluses to Dex tend to nudge you towards a dex based fighter.
Yes tabaxis are great for fighters as their feline agility gives them more of an edge in combat...I once jumped up a tree to escape an angry goblin
what game is this cuv i cant find it
Dungeons and dragons!
Don't forget that heynas are cats too, I 💖 heynas because I'm more of a dog person so they are the ideal cat
Also lions are cool too
Hyenas are hyenas. They aren’t dogs and they aren’t cats, they’re a unique family of mammals, Hyaenidae. Hyenas are more closely related to cats than to dogs, but they are still quite distinct, with their own evolutionary lineage.
I think that is a Gnoll
@@hyrkanian66 ik but I wanna play them as a cat ok 😭
does he know that drow have +2 dex and +1 charisma
For my Tabaxi Way of the Ascendant Dragon Monk PC if the DM is kind enough to let use this I'm going with a homebrew background I found that will give History as a proficiency, mostly cause part of her personality is that she was blessed by the Cat Lord with a curiosity, and love of history, folklore, myths, and legends and one of her personality quirks is every time the party finds as part of the adventure a supposed legendary artifact or location or a artifact or location of great historical value she'll pull a "Nathan Drake" and go in to a great borderline lengthy detail about said artifact or location resulting in the party members cutting her off going "Okay we get it can you please cut to the chase already."
I’m currently playing a 7’, 300 lbs of muscle Tabaxi barbarian who wields a rather large warhammer. Her nickname is Nails, her full name is Problems Look Like Nails. She’s been super fun so far.
Love it. What's her tag line? "Looks like a problem"?
@@SkullSplitter I actually, literally said that when we got beset by some scarecrows in our first session in this campaign.
I did some art of her if you're interested: www.deviantart.com/shingallon/art/Nails-the-Tabaxi-barbarian-846814058
