Shifters are the descendants of Lycans (were-people) of one animal or another. Have you always wanted to be part wolf? Or part tiger? Or part anything else for that matter? Shifters are the 5E answer. Are they worth playing? Pick your favorite were-animal and embrace your bestial nature as we go through everything you need to know about shifter 5e.

I think you might be underestimating the longtooth shifter. unarmed strikes usually aren't good but the fact that you can do it as a bonus action makes it pretty good. it doesn't take your attack action so it's pretty much a flat bonus to DPR. it's a great bonus to an aggressive build with no way to weaponize their bonus action. great vid tho.

I play as Longtooth Barbarian and extra unarmed strike to d12 greataxe swing was good.

I agree and am currently working on a Path of the Beast Barbarian that will have 4 attacks per round by level 5.
      1 from Longtooth Shifter
      2 from his Claw attacks.
      1 from Extra Attack.
I am doubting between picking up a Greatsword and investing in GWM or just going all in on the Tooth an Claws. For pure damage output you would want to go with the Greatsword + GWM. But I somehow don't like this idea very much. A Greatsword has incredible reach. Not in the game terms but real life terms, the biggest advantage of wielding such a big sword is not its weight or anything. The biggest advantage is that you can attack people and, if they are wielding a 1-handed weapon, they can barely attack you back. So that kind of weapon would create a certain type of fighting style on the battlefield. Big, arching strikes that help put a lot of distance between you and your opponent.
But the claws and a bite have just about the smallest reach possible. So you really want to be up inside people's comfort zone. They would have a disadvantage against you if they're wielding a 1-handed sword because those are not meant for stabbing and close quarters combat (except for maybe the Gladius / Shortsword).
What I am saying is that these two fighting styles conflict. And it would make it very weird to describe.
So I am probably going to take the '-1d6+10' hit and fight like I imagine this character to fight. I won't be taking the -5 to a ttack rolls from GWM so who knows, it might balance out.
Imagine if a crocodile type creature had the snout of a lion, but slightly elongated. That and extremely muscular with large sharp claws.
Keep the updated rules for the Shifter race in mind as well. You will get to use that BA Attack on the same round as you activate your shifter ability.

The longtoooth shifter is way better than you give credit. The bonus action attack frees up your action which is super useful

My first (real) dnd character is a Fox Swiftstride Shifter! I was pretty shocked at how small he is (5'1 and 103 lbs). He's also multiclasses Bard/Rogue. I do so love him.

I haven't made him yet, but I've been kicking around ideas of making a Wisdom focused Ranger with the Druidic Warrior fighting style using the Crusher feat, Shillelagh, and Magic Stone. Not sure which subclass to do with, but Swarmkeeper has been at the top of my list.

I'm making a wildhunt barbarian using some of Tasha's rules. The ability to negate advantage on attacks against me just seem like such a huge advantage to me plus advantage on wis saving throws as a barbarian means less of a chance of being turned against my party. I do wonder what animals everyone associates with Wildhunt shifters though.

  • @safsren

In a modified sandbox type setting, the wildhunt shifter could be pretty good for a barbarian. Hear me out, that +2 can help barbarians with their terrible will save while completely removing the disadvantage with reckless attack when shifted

The "Were-touched" name doesn't really work, since "were" translates to "man" for the term "man-wolf". So now we have "man-touched", which is just ... creepy.

Wildhunt features in mordenkeins is fantastic with barbarian. No creature can hit you with advantage.
This means with reckless attack you always hit with advantage but the enemies advantage is negated.

I made a wildhunt barbarian with pirate backstory named Wolf. He is a "wolf"/hellhound (based on black dog) who grew up as grave digger for a church and left to be a pirate at 11/13 . Then got back stabbed (went to jail for abit for filler) got out and built up a "trade" businesses. Got a letter from dutchess to help and is now stuck in strahd's pocket world(still currently playing curse of strahd )

Working on a new shifter character for our DM's homebrew campaign, currently waiting for Mordenkainan's Monsters of the Multiverse to come out for DND Beyond.
Previously he was going to be a Swiftstride (reskinned) Gloom Stalker; making him hard (if not near impossible) to hit in a dark room (Umbral Sight).

I think my only disappointment with shifters is that you only get one shift per rest. I'm new to dnd, so I have yet to play a campaign where we got many rests.

    • @JeanieBlakely
      @JeanieBlakely 3 года назад

It is per short or long rest so it comes back easier then some features. Would be nice if you got more uses as you level up but this is a racial feature not a class feature so that could be harder to implement.

Using “Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft”, I created a “Swiftstride” Shifter.
She has the ancestry of the “Werepanther” and I chose “Circle of the Moon Druid” as her subclass.
This character is for “Valachan, Domain of the Hunter.”

I have to disagree with you in regards with the longtooth shifting feature, natural attacks normally aren't that good but this one is an exception because you can do this attack which is comparable to a short sword as a bonus action and you still add your modifier which you wouldn't be able to do without the dual wield feat of two weapon fighting, this is great for a fighter with sword and shield since fighters don't have that much use for bonus actions anyways so you can increase your AC by using a shield and still get that bonus action attack.

I’m still learning dnd (like 1.5-2months very much a newbie ) also I have dyslexia the writing is bad
And I pretty sure that the idea is not mechanicaly or lore accurate but like shift with a very watered down version of lycanthropy as said before newbie
But we shifted like if allowed by a dm if stays shifted for more then like a minute or something they start to kinda lose control of their actions also full moon stuff =)
I like making characters and also I liked drawing a weird combo of cat and human teeth
    Have a nice day =)

With the Ravenloft book coming out and the "races" it offers to put on top of other base races, shifters seem a bit lacking and opens up a missing piece in the Ravenloft book. How would one use the shifter as a "bitten by a were-beast and is changed into one" character?

Bonus 1st level feat (Group houserule): Grappler
      Open Hand Monk 3
      Primal Barbarian 4 ASI-feat: Durable
Background trait for Animal Handling & Nature
No matter my Ki points I get a Bonus attack every turn. Plus she's designed to wrestle things to the ground. Think Pro Wrestler who likes to bite. (Only she's more Australian and the target of her wrestling is a Croc.)
