    I got a Kenku Necromancer, I named him Nathaniel because his master (a mortician) called him that when he'd berate him for messing up on the embalming process; he found his master's secret necromancy book and ran away with it after accidentally reanimating a corps during a funeral, traveled with some wizards who taught him more about magic and the school of necromancy, but he left them to seek out adventure riches, and the pursuit of flight, aaaaaand he loves to eat GRUB!

      Also got one. Hs name's Caw. Now I know what you think, but that name has meaning. Caw was nameless and expelled from his flock for not following the god of death and secret killing. He had a raven which was his best friend. Said raven died from age while Caw wandered the wilderness. An old necromancer found Caw burying his raven friend and showed him necromancy. When the necromancer asked his name, Caw responded with the cawing of his raven friend, the only companion he ever had. The necromancer also showed him how to resurrect his raven as a skeleton. Now Caw had his friend back and appropriately named him Crack because of his constantly cracking bones. Now he wanders the world together with crack and wants to shw people the good things necromancy can accomplish.

    Fun fact much like parrots, Corvids such as ravens and crows, what the kenku are based on can learn to mimic human speech via a process called spliting their tongue which is why in the 5e campaign i run, through something like 9th level remove curse, a wish spell, or a divine intervention can lift the curses on a single individual kenku though they will need a wish spell if they want to regain natural wings

    I only used her for a single one shot so not much development but I rather liked my Kenku Swashbuckler Rogue. Her Kenku name was a sea’s breeze in the sails then a cannonfire. So her name for other non-Kenku was Seabreeze Cannonfire. It was a very trap heavy one shot and her amazing perception almost definitely saved everyone’s asses.

    Kenku could make amazing bards because they can use sounds of things to aid a performance or even create one of their own! "He crept along floor" You then make the creaking sound of floorboards for example.

    I had great fun playing a kenku called Pop.
    For his voice I took the mimicry trait and stretched it a little. After a while I would say an entire sentence as another character at the table, and switch it every sentence.
    I figured, he has spent so much time around the other PCs by the time I started doing it, it made enough sense that he would have enough exposure to their words to do so (at least I thought so).

    I actually watched this video for the Kenku I'm building! Creak Fall (either a monk, cleric, or perhaps dual monk/rogue) literally fell into the hut of their babushka (grain goddess cleric) and tended to the temple until her death. Now Creak, offering a sack full of potatoes to the grain goddess (they're not the smartest, but they get the job done), sets off to help out a group with their journey into Hell for their friend (my previous character who now has a family and cannot emotionally afford to die).

    ive been playing around with heroforge for a few years now making so many characters, but I just made a kenku barbarian, and despite it being the complete opposite of what im usually attracted to in my dnd characters I REALLY wanna try him out.
    unusually tall (for a kenku, so he's still not that tall) and muscular, i imagined him to be a broken mind, even worse at communicating than normal. he seeks connection in the hopes that someone might one day help him understand what was done to him to force him into fighting this way and why he's now crazy. not heavily relying on his forgery skills and generally not using those more sneak focused skills. in the beginning id want him to go on a journey of self acceptance as he understands his cultural heritage and begins to balance his innate skills as a kenku, and his learned skills as a battle-axe wielding worrier.
    if anyone out there loves the borderlands series as much as I do it might help to understand who my inspiration is, but salt the wounds!

She mostly uses ASL and drawings to communicate, and seldom uses repeated phrases to communicate since she is aware that other humanoids often find it annoying. It’s been really fun to use expressions to convey her personality as well. Think of how Gromit is from Wallace and Gromit.

    One of my current characters is a kenku rogue. I named her Khadri and it took the DM a long time to get that I was making a joke on how crows/ravens caw. I love playing her, but sometimes I'm just not good at sound effects. I was talking mentally with a creature that was going to try to take one of the characters in our group, it was basically "Give me the Aasimar and I will let you and the rest of your party live." Someone caught my character staring off while talking to "the gaunt man" and asked what was going on. She pointed up to the ceiling of the cave they were in and I went "she mimics the sound of a large group of rats"
    I did this while messing around with a mechanical pencil www.deviantart.com/enkeli19/art/Khadri-Kenku-Rogue-765452357

  • @8-bitten

    I am considering the Kenku. I think it would be amazing to play. I was thinking of starting out as a Thief who's back story is that I "obtained" a spell book (wizard spells) but doesn't yet understand any of them. Eventually, when he reaches high enough level thief, he will learn first level wizard spells. His goal of course is to learn spells of levitation and flying. I am looking for adventures to team up with to explore deep dark dungeons and other places where there is a potential to find caches of treasure to find scrolls, magic items and of course sources of income.

    • @SkullSplitter
      @SkullSplitter  2 года назад

      That's great. We love the idea of a character that has a thing while adventuring and later that's why they multiclass. Why did they start out as a theif?

    • @8-bitten
      @8-bitten 2 года назад +1

      @@SkullSplitter Straight up honest it is because of the dex bonus. Dex/Wisdom just makes me think Thief primary with a few wizard spells. Thief also so I can sneak into places that are not too dangerous that might have magic items or clues to their location. I think the primary motivation of the Kenku is to fly and as a strong motivating force you are compelled to seek out information in that regard. As a Kenku you can't ask people outright for information and it becomes too frustrating. So you just sneak around and snoop lock boxes and chests. Obviously magic users would be the best targets which is how I "obtained" a spell book that I can't yet understand. I need to learn the spells to see if any of them will let me fly. To continue with the thought process, the Kenku start out not being able to converse in common and need to hear phrases to mimic. I believe wizard spells need to be spoken aloud. However from what I recall the Kenku, upon reaching a higher level, can become fluent in conversational languages. To that end I would probably not be able to call out spells until I can read and say them aloud. But maybe I am mixing up my RP games.

      "what I recall the Kenku, upon reaching a higher level, can become fluent in conversational language"

    • @8-bitten
      @8-bitten 2 года назад

      @@SkullSplitter I don't know where I read it but I know I did. Probably wasn't canon. What I am curious about is spell casting as they are said to have no internal monologue. So how can they read and memorize spells as that would require them to be said either internally our verbally in repetition? I think it would be fun to play but as I said initially I am only thinking of it. Mainly because I ended up with a Kenku miniature that I painted and was happy with how it turned out. I find table top boring for the most part so I usually like to play chaotic and the abnormal to mix things up and cause mischief. Probably never actually play one unless I find a DM willing to put up with it.

      i'm trying a way to get around the speaking part without having a soundboard. they're a warlock who was chosen by a tome that is a knowledge seeking entity. sorta athena vibes. and their character motivation, which is why the book is helping it, is to free all kenku of the curse. they used to serve an old wizard, who had the book, and died (maybe killed by the character, but it's ambiguous). so they're generally quiet or say old man phrases. when it's absolutely necessary they use telepathy or write something down (which i think is allowed bc the creativity is related to speech?). also the book saw that they're unusually creative for a kenku, though are still limited compared to other races. also bc of the knowledge entity, they're not a charisma based warlock, they're intelligence based with high wisdom bc i wanna get into divination later in the game. also charisma sorta has to be a dump stat for my characters because it's hard to get in that headspace, so i can't play a normal warlock without it being a complete meme that i say awkward things but for some reason people like me (yes, i know how that sounds). they do have some points in deception though. and though i wanna stray from a soundboard, i'm definitely gonna write down cool/funny/useful things that npc's or other players say; to show they're learning about the world after being isolated for so long opening up, and that they're warming up to their party members and friends.
      sorry for the rant, i just thought my unique take on it might help people who wanna go a slightly more serious route!
