  • The Kenku are Raven-like humanoids which have been re-introduced as a player character race in Volos Guide to Monsters. In this video I cover an alternate origin story for the Kenku taken from Dragon Magazine, and discuss the thought process and behavior of the Kenku in some detail.

    If you think about it, all living things, sentient or not, generally think in patterns. Kenku are just more attuned to recognizing those patterns.

    As a Dm I also thought it wasn't really a curse or a debilitating because there not really aware of the situation,so what I do for kenku is change the curse instead of giving them no creativity I give them the "Creativity" back but keep language as a limiting factor so there more trapped within their mind aware but not able to accurately articulate their ideas.
    So when In an adventuring party & they are aware of danger like a surprise attack they are aware & likley try to frantically warn the party spouting random sounds & such but the other members can't understand them so when a casualty occurs it weighs heavily on them.
    As an example

    From what I've read about the Forgotten Realms the kenku were once basically a branch of aarakocra that worshiped Quorlinn. Once they got the wasting plauge they got desperate and turned from Quorlinn to pazuzu. Pazuzu helped them but in turn took their wings and speech.

    Kenku Arcane Trickster Rogue is definitely one of my favorite race/class combo to play. Kleptomaniac bird is a fun playstyle, even if your party might get annoyed, but you’re a Kenku so thats who you are. Secondary class is entirely open too, but Bard, Ranger, Fighter, or Monk are probably better choices then Sorcerer, Wizard, Warlock, or Barbarian... although I would love to see a Kenku Barbarian.
    A cool thing you can do as a Kenku Arcane Trickster is have your Kenku have a bit of a “Spell based kleptomania”, where they are compelled to steal the most shiny spell they can see someone use with the Arcane Trickster spell that steals spells.
    Fun Fact: Kenku get a weird +1 Wisdom bonus, but, as explained, they’re fairly unwise as shit.

    So what happened if a Kenku becomes a Wereraven? This has actually come up in a campaign and the DM passed it off as the wereravens refused to turn people they didn't absolutely trust and would probably never agree to turning the PC. Poor Tick Tock.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  7 лет назад +5

      Essentially the Kenku has some advantages and disadvantages. First, it is cursed, this may mean that it is denied divine aid from good aligned deities, it may not be able to receive divine healing magic (healing potions will still work, as will arcane magic such as a wish spell). It has the slight attribute enhancements that Wereravens share. Your DM may decide that the curse of lycanthropy actually restores some of the Kenku's creativity, and the power of true speech, this would certainly cause the Kenku some problems within kenku society, as this would be very weird for them.And of course, as the full moon rises, the Wereraven losses control of itself and becomes an evil, savage bastard,, the consequence of whatever crimes it commits under lunar influence are solely up to the DM.

    • @The_Foreman
      @The_Foreman 7 лет назад

      Minor correction on my part, the wereravens in our campaign I THINK had the ability to transform on command and were friendly with our party at the time (something about saving a brewery) it was in a Strad campaign. Friendly to the point they followed us and even carried off an unconscious companion to a healer that owed us a favor. IF they went crazy on full moons I never found out cause I had quit by then. (only played in 2 sessions)
      But in the sense of the standard version of Were- transformations that would make sense.

    Want to run a Kenku divination wizard -so with portents and the ability to comprehend languages but can't effectively communicate with the party. At least with any nuance which explains to some degree the limitation of his ability to steer fate. Or at least colors it, considering a more usual fate vs soothsayer paradox. But based on his foretelling numbers may proclaim throughout the day "watch out" "nothing to it" "just so" at random times until the portents are used in a pinch. And then he kind of Birds out upon leaving combat rounds, rapidly blinking, fanning out his neck feathers in a flummoxed display of recognition, like a sigh of relief.

    Since their learning capacity is as such, would you say they are able to learn how to communicate with animals? When you think about it most birds and mamals have a patern based communication system and i don't see why a kenku couldn't work out the pattern with enough time. It would be more like a different dialect then a different language

    very cool, how many DMs have done riddle/puzzle challanges based off of Kenku's mastery of patterns? There must be some really creative ways to leverage that as a DM. I mean if they could have an entire conversation in a handshake using subtle body language ques (that people may not even notice) that would be really cool to describe in a perception check or literally instruct each player once and make them try to copy it next session.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  7 лет назад +1

      My players are not overly fond of puzzles, so I tend to just make the plots of the campaign very puzzling. You are right on the money there with the capabilities of the Kenku, as I mentioned the Power of the Kenku, they can recognise a pattern, such as a trap where foot placement, object substitution, or any sort of lock or trigger arrangement they have encountered and overcome before. As a DM i would grant Kenku advantage on overcoming any obstacle they have encountered and overcome before, unless circumstances have complicating the situation greatly. This doesn't really disrupt the game, the DM can put things in the game simply to allow the player of the Kenku to blitz them and feel like their character is a bad ass.. there is nothing wrong with that. I do shy away from challenging the players,. rather than their characters, because the characters have stats and skills that are better, for the most part, than the actual players.. they are not bards, rangers and wizards, in most cases their characters could figure things out faster than the players actually could, much like they are way, way better at combat and spell casting :)

      AJ Pickett I converted some of your lore videos into tiny booklets and scrolls to drop as codex pieces or data props as i call them. The majority of my group are brand new to DnD and these details really help newer players get into the game and get creative when this information is literally handed to them. Ever consider trying to convert this wealth of knowledge into packets of information that DMs could print out insert directly into a game in the form of scrolls and easily assembled booklets?

    I find it ironic that Kenku are based off of crows... yet aren't creative. Crows are one of the smartest creatures in the animal kingdom; up there with other clever critters such as dolphins, octopus, and whatnot.
    They create tools to find food of build nests and display advanced problem-solving abilities. And they are surprisingly social with their kind and other species.
    All this really makes me want to make a kenku character that breaks the mold and anti creativity curse these birdfolk are stuck with. But I'm just rambling I guess! XD

    • @CalamitasBrimstoneWitch
      @CalamitasBrimstoneWitch Год назад

      Fun fact: While crows rival apes and dolphins, ravens are on par with them, making ravens tied for 2nd place in brains in the whole animal kingdom. In fact, some scientists think that ravens are as smart as humans!

    I imagine Kenku as being somewhat like an individual with classic autism. They might engage in echolalia, repeating back what people say in their own voice rather than really answering questions.
    For communication, I would probably have Kenku use sign language and visuals such a diagrams drawn in the dirt.
    If a Kenku is a magic user, then they might use Prestidigitation to produce a palm-size object to request that object. They could also use Minor Illusion to draw a 3D map in a 5 foot cube with their perfect memory, and then point to the places they are going or where they want the adventure party to go.
    I have been wanting to use a Kenku as an NPC healer who uses set herbal formulas, and rote learned medicine.

    Was curious about the developmental age. I know you said they reach maturity roughly at the age of 12. But at what age do you think they start walking. How long do you think parents carry children? At what age do they have the ability to recall. Can they recall the sound of their egg cracking? The first chirps of their parents? Do you think they are born with a love of glittery shiny things? Or is that a learned behavior like all other behaviors are for them?

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  Год назад

      The age of maturity would be around the time they also reach sexual maturity, they start walking within a about three months of hatching and their recall for sound begins just before they open their eyes, which is around a week after hatching. They are, of course, highly gregarious and social creatures who have a rich culture and all the strange quirks of any sapient social species.
