The phb specifically stated that it's rare, but they can be born vibrant or metallic. Which is how I have a WHITE dragonborn. And their scales, while not actually tied to their ancestry, do often match their ancestry when possible. As such I am playing a dragonborn with white dragon ancestry. Her scales are actually a cream color, with the ends appearing frosted.
I think it would be an interesting dynamic for a Dragonborn (Who despises dragons) and a Kobold (Who revere's dragons) to interact multiple times within a party

I like to imagine their patriotism/collectivism coupled with their liberation from slavery made them gravitate towards massive chants and labor songs. I like to imagine giant drums and perhaps melodic percussion instruments made from dragon hide and scales since they hunted dragons.
Most dwarfs a lawful good or lawful nuetral. As they are related to dragons, Dragonborn tend to feel very passionate about the balance between good and evil, often making them chaotic.

I was playing my first actual game of D&D as a Blue Dragonborn Paladin of Bahamut. We ended up encountering a group of Tiamat worshipers and while walking and interacting with them, my character turned to the cult leader and said, “I will say one thing about the gods... BAHAMUT SENDS HIS REGARDS!” As he drew his +1 long sword and swung for the neck getting double 20’s. As he turned to the other cultist, who still outnumbered the party 2-1 he roared out a battle cry and scared all of them with a 24 (19+5) intimidation roll. BEST CHARACTER MOMENT EVER! All time favorite flavor race!
Very odd, my first character was a silver dragonborn Paladin of Bahamut. I used a greatsword though. Ended up dying holding off a wave of orcish commandos in a narrow pass while the rest of the party escaped. Our rogue later returned to the scene and recovered my armor and brought it to a little church. They made a statue in my likeness wearing my armor. Ended up being a magical barrier protecting the church by a final blessing of Bahamut.

My recommendation for finding people to play with is going to the nearest game store in your area. Or search up dnd stores near me. They are like hubs for people to congregate and play games like dnd, warhammer, magic, and other geek stuff. They're strangers but sometimes that's for the better.

The Dragon Overlord's are practically the definition of selfish cruelty, caring nothing for thier slaves and thralls, only that they follow thier orders without question.
Random thought: A silver or steel dragon decides to check out the new guys on the block about a decade or so after they show up, doing the whole "disguised as one of them" thing. After 80 or so years of living among the dragonborn, the dragon gets found out and is forced to reveal their true form - perhaps it's because they had a kid with a dragonborn and the kid turned out to be half-dragonborn, half silver or steel dragon. But the dragon has already befriended several generations of multiple clans and has been incredibly helpful among dragonborn society. What happens? I could see this being a pretty interesting turn of events within dragonborn society. The die-hard traditionalists could argue that this is just an attempt to get on their good side in order to eventually enslave the dragonborn again, while the more open-minded dragonborn, along with the friends the dragon made during their stay, would argue that this is evidence that dragons are far different in this strange, new world.

For those interested in dragonborn as a race I suggest Erin M. Evan's Brimstone Angels series. It's focused on a pair of Tiefling twins taken in by an exiled Dragonborn and the last book in the series focus' heavily on Djerad Thymar and the dragonborn in general as a second Spellplague starts to sweep over Toril and a revived Deity try's to become their patron god.

Playing a Lawful Good Dragonborn Cleric/Mage aligned to Bahumt has been the most fun i´ve ever had so far in DnD. I just love the Race and the Lore behind them
It's worth noting though that worship of Bahamut and the Platinum Cadre are, according to the novels, slowly becoming more accepted in Tymanther to the point where some of the more old fashioned clans are starting to employ their priests. Times be a-changing.

My first character was a Dragonborn Paladin because I had a feeling that they behave like you mentioned in the video and also mainly because I behave like that. Most of what you described in the first half of this video is accurate as of 4e, but doesn't take into account more recent developments during the Sundering. Many dragonborn (or Vayemniri, as they prefer to call themselves) are still extremely sceptical of gods and dragons, even metallic dragons. But after an ancient Untheran god helped them defeat an army of demons and to survive in Toril post-Sundering rather than being shunted back to Abeir, a lot of vayemniri are now coming around to the idea of gods not necessarily being so bad. They just treat the relationship between mortal and god as a transaction: prayers in return for miracles, instead of being about the mortal _serving_ the god, which is how they believe most worshipping works. Children don't just go with the parent who is the same gender. Vayemniri use mating for political reasons, and they come up with an agreement (called a _qallim_) around many different aspects, one of which is how many eggs each clan gets. It's worth Googling "Playing a Dragonborn in the Realms, Part 3: The next generation " for an excellent article written by a WotC author and trained anthropologist for details on how dragonborn politics works. She has many more articles about dragonborn stuff on her site, too.

My first experience with a dragonborn was in 5e. 1st char I made. As far as I know I never bent or changed the info about them, but it was agreed on that dragonborn have tails and breast. Scales always indicated (like dragons) thier alignment. Unless you are playing one trying to go against the norm. So I am a OoA paladin Dragonborn White dragonborn who is actually out there doing good. In the backstory of my village we are a oddity , our village doesn't bend to extremes and base things on actions not words. They are farmers right on the outside of a giant Tropical Rain Forest. Inside the forest lies a way to reach the Ancients paladins, the dragonborn village kinda sees to it that no one enters the forest except them and have them as honored guest. My particular village had long ago helped the Ancients Paladins who work with Suriel "Goddess of the Silver Moon" aka (The Brighter Moon) protecting nature. (The Goddess was basically like a dispatcher, sending the Ancients in directions when they need to get somewhere by relaying info in dreams.) (Other than that Ancients just roamed the lands doing good.) It is a high honor to be recruited and trained as such a paladin. So high honor to join them, so much so the village will have the family's crest put on a shield to give them. That way they can proudly show off, again only a newly crested Dragonborn in the order can carry one. Betraying the order betrays the Dragonborn Clan 1st and foremost and the pledge they gave so long ago, you betray the Order and then the Goddess herself. In this campaign dynamic normal dragonborn villages that couldn't resolve a issue in thier own clan's as a last resort (before outsiders) would be sent to the village to seek help. (Because our village was a outcast to the normal way Dragonborn think and behave, so since we are the last civilization out that way) It is common to rare or uncommon species pass through the village on thier way to anywhere but the forest. So my dragonborn has mainly only interacted with Dragonborn, Centaurs, Minitour's, Sprites, Aerokokra, Yuan ti etc... (have had to deal with a occasional Displacer Beast) So it was different to deal with races that have only rarely been seen around as a member of the Ancients.
I'd like to know more about Half-Dragons. Their page on the Monster Manual says they can be created by a ritual, which includes bathing in dragon blood?
I'm playing a dragonborn rn and me and my friends play a lil homebrew-y (sue me) but i tried to keep the spirit of dragonborns. I love my character more than any other I've created so dragonborns are very special to me
Can I just point out that the current Mystra is still Mystra/Midnight. She was reincarnated. The small essence of her ‘soul’ latched on to a bear (I don’t know why a bear) that was looking after her relics of when she was mortal, her daggers, a ring, and some other items she owned when she was mortal as they were stained with her blood with her fight with Myrkul after her fight above Mount Waterdeep. It’s all explained in Elminster Enraged (I think) by Ed Greenwood.

I just got through playing a Red Dragonborn, his name was Orinus and he was a badass Eldritch Knight, near the end of the campaign he got turned into a full Red Dragon and killed a Tarrasque in the final battle of the campaign 😁
I would like to thank you for this video. I have a Dragonborn character, but she was never raised by other Dragonborns so she wouldn't have known any of this. Now I know what she's to expect (should I ever join another campaign soon) and what she should avoid doing (albeit helping others is her strongest feat). If and when she meets other Dragonborns, she's going to ask A LOT of questions.
I honestly didn’t know much beyond rumors about Dragonborn as a race, this was extremely informative. They honestly sound like a tricky but immensely cathartic race to play. And now I really want to roll up a Dragonborn bard who is utterly determined to bring Heavy Metal into existence all on his own because FUKKIN METAL YYYEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHH \m/\m/ The idea of a character bound by their very blood to Be The Very Best, Like No One Ever Was just strikes me as incredibly appealing. EDIT: PLEASE do the Steel Dragons, I wanna know more about the Good Metal Bois.
This video was such a great help I'm currently running a campaign loosely based on the forgotten realms (though the bulk of it is on a homebrew region based on Brazil) and this video gave some ideas on how to handle my "Dragonborn" player's story and journey. Since he does mention and believe in Bahamut, and has a tail, I think I might know what to do with him now. No spoilers, obviously, but now I have great plans for you, Slyrak Thunderfang.

I'm literally playing as a Silver Half Dragon Dragonborn in a Homebrew campaign as her birth was caused by a male human merchant turned noble who fell in love with a female Silver Dragon and well if you're familiar with the memes of what happens between a bard and a dragon you know what happened to result in my character's Silver Dragon mother giving birth to her.

Made a silver Dragonborn. Divine soul sorcerer (direct descendant of Bahamut). Protected through childhood by the platinum cadre from the occultists of Tiamat. With each level 1/20 of his scales became platinum. It’s nice to see a lot of what I found compiled like this. ❤️

I'm curious why the 3.5e Dragonborn never got a mention? Dragonborn have been around far longer than the last 100 years. However instead of being a race that is born naturally, they were individuals very specifically chosen by Bahamut to be his champions. They were also very highly respected by all metallic dragons for that very reason. A Dragonborn's only purpose was to slay evil dragons in Bahamut's name. THOSE Dragonborn were truly rare, as you had to be specifically chosen by a god, and if you accept his gift, perform the ritual to become one.

In 3.5 you lost 2 Dex score because of the tail growth when you are transformed into a dragonborn.

I like to imagine their patriotism/collectivism coupled with their liberation from slavery made them gravitate towards massive chants and labor songs. I like to imagine giant drums and perhaps melodic percussion instruments made from dragon hide and scales since they hunted dragons.

I was playing my first actual game of D&D as a Blue Dragonborn Paladin of Bahamut. We ended up encountering a group of Tiamat worshipers and while walking and interacting with them, my character turned to the cult leader and said, “I will say one thing about the gods... BAHAMUT SENDS HIS REGARDS!” As he drew his +1 long sword and swung for the neck getting double 20’s. As he turned to the other cultist, who still outnumbered the party 2-1 he roared out a battle cry and scared all of them with a 24 (19+5) intimidation roll. BEST CHARACTER MOMENT EVER! All time favorite flavor race!
Very odd, my first character was a silver dragonborn Paladin of Bahamut. I used a greatsword though. Ended up dying holding off a wave of orcish commandos in a narrow pass while the rest of the party escaped. Our rogue later returned to the scene and recovered my armor and brought it to a little church. They made a statue in my likeness wearing my armor. Ended up being a magical barrier protecting the church by a final blessing of Bahamut.

My recommendation for finding people to play with is going to the nearest game store in your area. Or search up dnd stores near me. They are like hubs for people to congregate and play games like dnd, warhammer, magic, and other geek stuff. They're strangers but sometimes that's for the better.

The Dragon Overlord's are practically the definition of selfish cruelty, caring nothing for thier slaves and thralls, only that they follow thier orders without question.
Random thought: A silver or steel dragon decides to check out the new guys on the block about a decade or so after they show up, doing the whole "disguised as one of them" thing. After 80 or so years of living among the dragonborn, the dragon gets found out and is forced to reveal their true form - perhaps it's because they had a kid with a dragonborn and the kid turned out to be half-dragonborn, half silver or steel dragon. But the dragon has already befriended several generations of multiple clans and has been incredibly helpful among dragonborn society. What happens?
I could see this being a pretty interesting turn of events within dragonborn society. The die-hard traditionalists could argue that this is just an attempt to get on their good side in order to eventually enslave the dragonborn again, while the more open-minded dragonborn, along with the friends the dragon made during their stay, would argue that this is evidence that dragons are far different in this strange, new world.

For those interested in dragonborn as a race I suggest Erin M. Evan's Brimstone Angels series. It's focused on a pair of Tiefling twins taken in by an exiled Dragonborn and the last book in the series focus' heavily on Djerad Thymar and the dragonborn in general as a second Spellplague starts to sweep over Toril and a revived Deity try's to become their patron god.

Playing a Lawful Good Dragonborn Cleric/Mage aligned to Bahumt has been the most fun i´ve ever had so far in DnD. I just love the Race and the Lore behind them
It's worth noting though that worship of Bahamut and the Platinum Cadre are, according to the novels, slowly becoming more accepted in Tymanther to the point where some of the more old fashioned clans are starting to employ their priests. Times be a-changing.

Most of what you described in the first half of this video is accurate as of 4e, but doesn't take into account more recent developments during the Sundering. Many dragonborn (or Vayemniri, as they prefer to call themselves) are still extremely sceptical of gods and dragons, even metallic dragons. But after an ancient Untheran god helped them defeat an army of demons and to survive in Toril post-Sundering rather than being shunted back to Abeir, a lot of vayemniri are now coming around to the idea of gods not necessarily being so bad. They just treat the relationship between mortal and god as a transaction: prayers in return for miracles, instead of being about the mortal _serving_ the god, which is how they believe most worshipping works.
Children don't just go with the parent who is the same gender. Vayemniri use mating for political reasons, and they come up with an agreement (called a _qallim_) around many different aspects, one of which is how many eggs each clan gets. It's worth Googling "Playing a Dragonborn in the Realms, Part 3: The next generation
" for an excellent article written by a WotC author and trained anthropologist for details on how dragonborn politics works. She has many more articles about dragonborn stuff on her site, too.

That's my response when someone says that my dragonborn can't mate with a human.
"Dragonborn colors don't match their ancestry." It's not impossible for a dragonborn to have scales matching its ancestry, it's simply that they're so interbred that there are no clearly defined dragonborn subraces like there are dragon subraces.
My first experience with a dragonborn was in 5e. 1st char I made. As far as I know I never bent or changed the info about them, but it was agreed on that dragonborn have tails and breast. Scales always indicated (like dragons) thier alignment. Unless you are playing one trying to go against the norm. So I am a OoA paladin Dragonborn White dragonborn who is actually out there doing good.
In the backstory of my village we are a oddity , our village doesn't bend to extremes and base things on actions not words. They are farmers right on the outside of a giant Tropical Rain Forest. Inside the forest lies a way to reach the Ancients paladins, the dragonborn village kinda sees to it that no one enters the forest except them and have them as honored guest. My particular village had long ago helped the Ancients Paladins who work with Suriel "Goddess of the Silver Moon" aka (The Brighter Moon) protecting nature. (The Goddess was basically like a dispatcher, sending the Ancients in directions when they need to get somewhere by relaying info in dreams.) (Other than that Ancients just roamed the lands doing good.) It is a high honor to be recruited and trained as such a paladin. So high honor to join them, so much so the village will have the family's crest put on a shield to give them. That way they can proudly show off, again only a newly crested Dragonborn in the order can carry one.
Betraying the order betrays the Dragonborn Clan 1st and foremost and the pledge they gave so long ago, you betray the Order and then the Goddess herself. In this campaign dynamic normal dragonborn villages that couldn't resolve a issue in thier own clan's as a last resort (before outsiders) would be sent to the village to seek help. (Because our village was a outcast to the normal way Dragonborn think and behave, so since we are the last civilization out that way) It is common to rare or uncommon species pass through the village on thier way to anywhere but the forest. So my dragonborn has mainly only interacted with Dragonborn, Centaurs, Minitour's, Sprites, Aerokokra, Yuan ti etc... (have had to deal with a occasional Displacer Beast) So it was different to deal with races that have only rarely been seen around as a member of the Ancients.

Can I just point out that the current Mystra is still Mystra/Midnight. She was reincarnated. The small essence of her ‘soul’ latched on to a bear (I don’t know why a bear) that was looking after her relics of when she was mortal, her daggers, a ring, and some other items she owned when she was mortal as they were stained with her blood with her fight with Myrkul after her fight above Mount Waterdeep. It’s all explained in Elminster Enraged (I think) by Ed Greenwood.

I would like to thank you for this video. I have a Dragonborn character, but she was never raised by other Dragonborns so she wouldn't have known any of this. Now I know what she's to expect (should I ever join another campaign soon) and what she should avoid doing (albeit helping others is her strongest feat). If and when she meets other Dragonborns, she's going to ask A LOT of questions.
I honestly didn’t know much beyond rumors about Dragonborn as a race, this was extremely informative. They honestly sound like a tricky but immensely cathartic race to play.

Once you end with dragons, have you considered talking about giants? You can extend them too talking about firbolgs and goliaths

I'm currently running a campaign loosely based on the forgotten realms (though the bulk of it is on a homebrew region based on Brazil) and this video gave some ideas on how to handle my "Dragonborn" player's story and journey. Since he does mention and believe in Bahamut, and has a tail, I think I might know what to do with him now. No spoilers, obviously, but now I have great plans for you, Slyrak Thunderfang.

I'm literally playing as a Silver Half Dragon Dragonborn in a Homebrew campaign as her birth was caused by a male human merchant turned noble who fell in love with a female Silver Dragon and well if you're familiar with the memes of what happens between a bard and a dragon you know what happened to result in my character's Silver Dragon mother giving birth to her.

Made a silver Dragonborn. Divine soul sorcerer (direct descendant of Bahamut). Protected through childhood by the platinum cadre from the occultists of Tiamat. With each level 1/20 of his scales became platinum. It’s nice to see a lot of what I found compiled like this. ❤️

One dose not simply enter the Methwood. Entrance is only permitted after breathing through ancient Cletus' crystal pipe. Only then may entry be permitted.

I'm curious why the 3.5e Dragonborn never got a mention? Dragonborn have been around far longer than the last 100 years. However instead of being a race that is born naturally, they were individuals very specifically chosen by Bahamut to be his champions. They were also very highly respected by all metallic dragons for that very reason. A Dragonborn's only purpose was to slay evil dragons in Bahamut's name. THOSE Dragonborn were truly rare, as you had to be specifically chosen by a god, and if you accept his gift, perform the ritual to become one.
3.5e isn't played out in the forgotten realms
