Older video, but I wanted to talk about my Red Dragonborn!
My first ever D&D character, and I obviously fell in love with Dragonborn. When thinking about Ancestry and how red dragons are evil, I decided to make a red Dragonborn who was/is discriminated against for being a RED Dragonborn.
He was viewed as untrustworthy and had been unable to find steady work. So, I went against typing (as I love to do), and made him a rogue.
He turned to a life of crime, stealing from the wealthy who look down on him and sharing his wealth with those less fortunate than he is.
For his flaw, I played up the rage and anger aspect of red dragons and had him prone to violent outbursts, which he then feels extreme guilt about because he feels like when he can’t control himself, everyone one who looked down on him was right to do so.

Question, I’m new to DnD and I’m thinking of making a Dragonborn character as my first character as well, I’m just a bit confused as to what I would arm him with. I can’t really tell if their physical build allows them to be war hammer weilders or other bladed weapons, or even bows? I kinda had an idea for a rogue dragonborn, Bow and Battle axe or hammer.

    • @Nohawkkid008
      @Nohawkkid008 Год назад +2

@@virtualpancakes A Dragonborn's physical build doesn't effect what weapons they can use, typically the only factor is if the race you're playing is small or medium. If you're small, you can't wield weapons with the Heavy property.
So a Dragonborn can wield any weapon. What you're going to run into is the fact that a battle axe or hammer uses your Strength score to determine its attack bonus and damage, the bow would use your Dexterity. As a rogue, generally you'd want your Dexterity to be high as it's used for other Rogue skills (stealth, slight of hand, etc.), so you'd want to use weapons with the Finesse property as that let's you use your Dexterity instead of Strength.
Lastly, I don't believe Rogues are proficient with battle axes, so you'd have an even harder time hitting someone with it as you wouldn't get any bonus to your attack rolls.
Your class typically dictates what weapons you'd be using, so for a Rogue, it would be daggers, short swords, rapiers, bows. That's where you'd get your money's worth.
While it's not impossible to do, it wouldn't be easy to execute a Dragonborn Rogue with a battle axe. But talk to your DM! See what they can help you with! :)

In my campaign there are people who can be born with different abilities called other-born and I was thinking dragonborn could be mind controlled by their dragon and he was born not being mind controlled and when he came of age and felt like he could fend for himself he left the roost (har har). I've yet to pass this by him since he was gone this last play session. Hopefully this is a good compromise because I still dont think dragonborn and tieflings should be in the core books. People used to complain about Paladins and rogues not getting along then they introduce more characters that wouldn't get along and that dont even fit into traditional fantasy into a core book. He started out as just one of many other brass dragonborns in his birthplace, a nameless village in the mountains that focused on training in the art of war for the sake of mercenary work. He eventually had a falling out with his instructors and left the village of his own accord, hoping to make it on his own. On one of his first adventures, he had a chance encounter with the literal goddess of adventure, Avandra. After a Natural 20 Charisma check (for what I can't really remember), Avandra took a shine to him, and bestowed what she felt was a gift on him: a neverending adventure. In reality, Pyrovas eventually became an isekai protagonist, being thrown from one world to the next every time he died. Now his only goal is to find the goddess again and have her remove what he considers a curse from his immortal soul.

I love dnd 5e but they really did a botched job on the abilities of the dragonborn race. they should have a natural AC (like loxodons'12+ con mod) as well as a bonus to con..i mean if your breath weapon scales off of con they should get a bonus to it. I'm also really bothered by how shortlived they are..I get that dragons didn't want them to live as long as elves but is 200-250 years too much to ask for?

Here's a homebrew option for your Dragonborn Race lore:
In aeons past, Dragons held sway over all the lands and seas and skies, ruling over all they surveyed. Their hubris and avarice brought such calamitous malcontent to the lesser races that the gods themselves rallied to be rid of their tyrannical malevolence; before they could enact their genocide, one god offered an alternative to save the dragons' souls from oblivion: to walk the lands on two feet as the humanoids did, bereft of much of their power. The Edict agreed upon, the gods gathered their power and cast a great spell upon the vast majority of the Dragon race, leaving naught but handfuls of True Wyrms left to roam. The newly christened Dragonborn were faced with a new dilemma; walk forward with humility or fall down in shame.
Generations passed, and few Dragonborn today recall their true origins. Their actions in life are reflected in the Next World, when their True Dragon Souls are redeemed or condemned thusly.

For my house rules, I added 2 additional features to all Dragonborn (which you also mentioned you felt was needed). First, they are automatically immune to a dragon's Frightful Presence power, and they gain Advantage on all other Fear saving throws. Second, as the description mentions Dragonborn try to excel at a specific skill during their life, so they are able to boost 1 skill they are trained in at first level to expertise, adding twice their proficiency bonus to it.

It might also be worth a 1d6 recovery chance rather than short rest. A breath weapon should be a bigger part of a dragon born’s life.

I actually find the idea of a Draconic Ancestry Dragonborn Sorceror with mixed Dragon heritage interesting, as it could even allow you to develop a unique form of Breath Weapon, for instance combining a Black & Red Dragon's Breath Weapon might allow for a sort of "Acidic Flame" Breath Weapon where it deals both fire damage and acid damage (is that a Troll I hear screaming in terror out there?), but like acid it an actually "cling" to the target's body and actually begin inflicting both fire and acid damage to them over time, triggering every time either the Dragonborn or the unfortunate enemy's turn rolls around. Or they might have the standard Fire damage with their Breath Weapon from their Red Dragon ancestry, and their Black Dragon ancestry might manifest in another way (such as a defensive way, like "Acidic Sweat" or something like that where the Dragonborn can use a reaction to secrete a highly corrosive acidic sweat from their skin that inflicts acid damage to anything/anyone grappling/touching them).

Potential ideas to fix the Dragonborn:
-Change the +2 Str to +2 Con. Dragonborns are the only race whose racial bonuses don't feed into their racial abilities.
-Subraces. Every other PHB race has subraces that affect their stats. Give Dragonborns some subraces (maybe tied to their color) that can give them some different +1 bonuses. Maybe Cha, Str, and Wis to give them some class variety.
    - Better scaling on the breath weapon. Taking your action to do 5d6 at 16th level is laughably weak. Bump up the damage (I would say 8d6 at 16th level is fair) to make using an action for it worth it or maybe make the cast time a bonus action instead.
-Change the recharge. Either once per short rest or uses per long rest equal to its Con mod.

. What do you folks think of making Dragon Born and Draconic Heritage stack even if same type? You could be say a gold type DB and a gold type DH Sorcerer and just house rule to keep from losing too much from overlap. Like when you spend a sorcerer point to gain resistance against that fire you already have Res for, you gain immunity. Your breath can also count as a spell so you add your charisma modifier to it with Elemental Affinity.
Further improvements with dragonic interactions with dragons above what DA provides to deal with some overlap cancel in that regard too. Especially for Dragons of your type if you double up on type.

Also armor of agathys givs temp hp, and resistance doubles its value, as it can be proc'd twice as often in a combat. Dealing up to 25dmg per hit he takes, then 2d8 fire/cold dmg from fireshield.

It's honestly a crime how little attention D&D pays to the fey creatures and forces, while lavishing so much on demons and devils all the time. Fey stuff should be just as present and just as scary - it's called fey for a reason.

Cat Trucker I know, right? The Fey are so underrepresented (and even misrepresented) in D&D. But, to be fair, D&D has always been written by Americans, and I think most of us Americans really don't understand the true terror The Fair Folk should instill in us haha.
Like, I went in with a specific idea of what I wanted for my campaign, but then when I started reading the actual 5e lore it mentioned "the good fey" and I was like "THE *W H A T* ?"
So maybe homebrew is the way to go if you want a lot of fey.

@@sunnivaixchel2 Alas. Still, hoping that there will be some sort of supplements, or at least a next edition, that will give good material for fey forces at last.
Fey really are underexplored and underused. Maybe it's indeed because of what you mention - too much willingly forgotten from original folklore. Meanwhile, the Fey are basically like magical aliens, without being sci-fi or "space" ones - and very scary aliens at that. Not necessarily evil... but anything but nice and kind and goodly, at least to humans (and other similar races - I wonder how they'd treat elves, as traitors or as siblings?). They're almost Lovecraftian, before there was a Lovecraft - eldritch terrors, personifications of the horrors awaiting beyond the circle of light of civilized settlement, the ancient true masters of the land we encroach upon, who do not want us here. They have staggering potential as villains and antagonist forces, and even as fickle, bargaining, unreliable allies of convenience or whim - and not even the hags, perhaps the closest D&D's come to proper fey horror, come anywhere near close to the Fey's true potential.

I got 2 characters that are dragonborns, but in terms of roleplaying are half-dragons.
The first is a half-red dragon who is a paladin of Bahamut. The idea is that he did grow up to have a personality that you would expect of a decendant of a red dragon, but after som tragic event, he decided he wanted to better himself, and eventually came into contact with Bahamut, who suggested that a paladin's oath could be what he needs. He accepted, and now he is this paladin who is trying to do the right thing, but is allways fighting againts evil nature.
The other character is inspired by a skin for Anubis in the MOBA Smite. A few months ago he got a skin called "Death Dragon", which I immediately thought kinda looked like a dragonborn shadow sorcerer or something. So I made a character that was just that. Decided to have him be an actual half-shadow dragon, with a breath weapon that deals necrotic damage, and resistance to necrotic damage.

It worked out really well because the group as a whole had amazing cohesion. One of my favorite campaigns I've ever been a part of. I love the grind from lol 1 or 3 to 15. He tries to solve problems non-violently if possible, which led to the party capturing (and eventually adopting) a kobold who's turned out to be a great asset to us.
He also hates vampires. A lot. They're the one thing that sets off his dragon-y temper because he views them as loathesome parasites.

Breath weapon idea: make it a bonus action that recharges on short rest, or after its first use a player may use a bonus action to attempt its use by rolling a d20, success occurring when they beat 20 minus character level minus Con modifier. A level 3 character with 16 Con would need to roll 14 (20-3-3=14) or higher for success, 13 or lower would be a fail. Rolling a 1 is always a fail.

Something I like to do is give a Dragonborn is spells and abilities that parallel their specific ancestry. For example, Gold Dragons have Fire Breath, but also a Weakening Breath which affects Strength checks. So debuff effects like Vicious Mockery, Bane, or Synaptic Static feel like a nice fit.

Dragonborn druid. Watcher of nature hunting down poachers. Shift into a drake and breath weapon while latched onto a big enemies throat.
More of a homebrew thing, but our DM is a nice guy.

My character in Descent into Avernus is a Bronze Dragonborn Celestial Warlock whose patron is a Couatl loyal to Bahamut. I plan to take 3 levels of Fighter for Battlemaster(4 if I need the ASI). She's a total dragon nerd who is actually reincarnated by the Couatl from a Human, hoping her enthusiasm can help form the Platinum Cadre into a force that can rival Tiamat's Dragon Cult, but my character is not aware of this.

First character i ever made was placed in a world where there were many dragonborn, even an entire village of them. Mine was from that city but was seen as too weak to stay with them so he was cast out of his hometown to die on the streets, making him hate all dragonborn. He almost died on the streets until a blue dragonborn found him on the streets and saved him. My character was hesitant to trust him since he thought all dragonborn were evil and untrustworthy. He eventually let him help and began to trust this blue dragon. The blue dragon trained him and he became a great warrior, which made the city of dragonborns angry. They tried to kidnap and kill all of those on the street who helped him, and they succeeded but they didn't catch my character, and his whole mission is to save the blue dragonborn who saved him.

Every 4 levels I improve breath weapon by d6 dmg then level 20 becomes D10 dmg each dice. So stays pretty useful.

This needs an update after fizbans, as breathweapon is boosted to d10, with lines for Chromatic breath, and cones for gem and metallic. Also would love to see Aasimar.

My dragonborn had such a problem with rage that he turned to a warrior’s monastery to help him focus and control his violence.

I'm using the Fizban's treasury and making my character very dragon themed. Draconic sorcerer with 3 ranks in Warlock with a dragon as my celestial patron, and pact of the chain to mostly use pseudodragon as my familiar. I also have the dragon breath spell that I can use on the pseudodragon. When I get high enough for 5th level spells, I'll also get Summon Draconic Spirit. I'm really loving how much I can dig into this dragon theme. 🐉

would multiclassing a draconic sorcerer with a necromancer as a black dragonborn be a good idea?

I would have liked to see Dragon-born get natural armor. Draconic sorcerer gets it.

Glad to See Heroforge (my favorite mini design site) is teaming with my favorite D&D RUclips channel. I am actually going to play a Dragonborn fighter in my next game coming up and already started painting him. (Even though we play on roll20, lol)
