- Here’s a quick description of the core races in D&D!
Dungeons and Dragons is a game all about telling stories, becoming a character, and having fun with your friends. It’s set in a fantasy world of swords and sorcery, but whether you want to join a pirate gang, explore a jungle, or take part in a political plot is entirely up to you. Everything is your decision, from what you look like, to how you act, to what happens next. The dice just help you along. Most of all though, it’s about spending time with your nearest and dearest, sharing dwarven ales, and making memories.

I joined a friends group mid campaign. The second I heard that 2 people were Tabaxi (cat people) I immediately chose an aarakocra (bird person).
i think ur dm is kinda masochistic
@@Riesenweasel What was funny was she didn't tell me that they were hunting down a shapeshifting drow that was, you guessed it, disguised as a bird. First campaign ever and i had to talk my way out of getting attacked >
lmao
U should get the HumbleWood Campaign Setting book, your group will love it trust me
Oooh man! Did it turn out like Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries?
So far my favorite race is Half Elf due to their abilities, but after seeing this video I’ve been tempted to try some different races!
may i sugest grung(poison dart frogs who are slavers) or lizardfolk, both have uniqe abilitys like grungs ability to poison their percing damage to their wepons,or how lizardfolk can swim and make fallen foes into a new wepon or a snack?
I’ve played high elf, tiefling, fallen aasimar, and goblin so far, and in my next campaign, I’m going Devil’s Tongue Variant Tiefling. I am excited.
good for you!
I- love her hair so much
The editing and presentation of concepts in this video is great! Will send to any new players I DM for!
So far my favorite race to be are goblins, they're really fun to create.
It's hard to break away from variant humans with their free feat at level 1, but I've had a lot of fun with a hobgoblin, too!
They do have the "custom lineage" race now, which arguably better, and certainly more versatile than Vuman.
@@TheMorbidHobo And that in itself is enough reason why I don't think DMs should simply allow a player to choose "custom lineage" as their race. Instead, those rules should be reserved for DMs to use as baseline features when creating a custom race that exists in their campaign setting.
@@sk8rdman Eh, it works fine. Not very imaginative, but if a person isn't set on a race, and they just want something versatile, I'd rather have a custom lineage character than anouther vuman or half-elf.
Of course, I run a casual campaign in a very open setting. If you have a specific setting in mind with race restrictions, it wouldn't really work there, no.
@@TheMorbidHobo I guess that can work for a certain playstyle, but I can't help but wonder: if you let them choose custom lineage as their race, then what the heck is the character's actual race in-world? Do you just let them pretend to be an existing race like dwarf or elf, but using the custom lineage rules instead of the default ones? Do you let them just make up their own new race like a dog-man or something?
Personally, I really dislike the custom lineage rules for either of these cases.
All the custom lineage rules really do in practice is allow min-maxers and munchkins to gain the character optimizing benefits of playing a variant human, without having to actually play a variant human. If that's what you're after, then what's the point in having any rules for races at all?
@@sk8rdman "Do you let them just make up their own new race like a dog-man or something?"
Yeah. As said, my setting is very, very freeform.
Custom lineage really isn't the place for min-maxing as there are less +1s than a race that would fit a given class perfectly.
Also if you're running a game with friends where the point of it is to enjoy playing, min-maxing is a nonissue most of the time, and if it is an issue for a certain character, you can talk to that player.
Also yes, if I had to have a min-max player in my group, and they for whatever reason were going with a versatile race instead of a specialized one (probably for the feat), yes, I would rather them use a variety of different looking character than have them be a vuman with every single one of them.
I love these small clips for newcomers who will, hopefully, love them too and start playing with their family and friends.
The more, the merrier in these worlds we create, I say!
My significant other plays DND and has been wanting me to learn. You earned a subscriber today cause you explain everything I don’t know so well!
Whichever race you want is the Best Answer here! I love playing a Wood Elf or a Dwarf, even though they are bitter enemies. Makes it more fun lol
I came here from your channel lol. Glad to see you here!!
@@GamingOnTheGo lol, thanks for the support :)
Who says they have to be bitter enemies ? They aren't enemies in my world .
In my world there is a forested mountain where there's a kingdom of wood elves that live below and on the side of the mountain in tree houses and a dwarven kingdom within the mountain with roads going from the dwarven kingdom through the wood elves kingdom providing trade goods to each other and mutual protection to each other from enemies .
There are some dwarves that live among the wood elves and some wood elves living among the dwarves .
Some wood elves are miners providing raw ore and gemstones and some dwarves woodsmen providing wood and game to their kingdom .
It all depends on how you view the world you run and play in
I usually like to be Half Elf but I wanted to try out Dragonborn and I'm currently using him in an adventure, seemed like a really cool race
0:14 Tall dwarf is interesting. Imagine a giant dwarf
endless possibilities..
Human with a Longsword babyyyy
She has a 99 Charisma😅
I honestly like being a warforged, but this video inspired me to try new races!
I remember in one campaign I ended up burning a dwarf's beard because he tried to hit me with his Warhammer.
I played my first kobold 2 years ago and i have not played any other race since, usually as an artificer. I love playing a smol bean who loves shiny things.
I’m new so I’ve only been able to play one race so far. I’m playing a drow gloomstalker. He’s a shy but good person who’s priority is looking after his chosen family (and yes his family is alive and is a good family). I am also interested in playing the hexblood, the owlin, and the harengon at some point. I also have a few ideas for the new autognome race. So yeah, I’ll get to all of it eventually.
Human, Dwarf or Drow are my favorites, by some regular elves, halflings or half-orcs are nice too
Thank you for this! I'm starting a campaign with new players, and instead of making them read 70 pages, this seems much more friendly! Then we can narrow it down to a few less to go over and make a character with.
My Dragonborn have tails, thank you very much. And darkvision, for that matter.
So far, my favorite has been the Firbolg.
Her expressions were gold ,she would make an excellent DM
One of my players is a 7'2 ft dark ELF.
I've always preferred Kenku. There's just something about a DnD race with the intelligence of a raven
Dark Elf ofcourse.
I have been playing DnD for 35 years now and I have to say I haven't really played a variety of races. I would like to try something other than half-elf though. 😅
This was a fun listen. Thumbs up!
Great explanations for newbies
i openly admitting you got my interest in dnd for sure
XD srry but ive ben only in starter campaigns this would be my first year of a on going one
Wood elf! All the way❤️😊
Play whoever you want and remember if you want to play with negative race modifiers that is perfectly fine. Sadly you’ll have to work out a balanced homebrew for this because 5e for some reason doesn’t have an optional rule for them.
5e does have an optional rule for that, it's just in a different, newer book: Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
It's so funny that even D&D editors couldn't destinguish Half-Dragon and dragon born apart :) Half of the images are from the original D&D campaign that bring forward the Half-Dragons :)))
To be fair, it does take a more trained eye to even discern the difference between the two.
Guess you've got a photographic memory, though (not that that's a bad thing).
what race should we play??
exactly what we want to :)
Going against race/class can be fun, but minmaxing can also be fun.
my newest PC as my last one got PK is a Mark of healing Halfling, and he is a Wizard Necromancer.
SO a Necromancer that can heal, and originates from a healers guild. :D
and my backup is a Loxodon Druid. :)
also you are mixing up Dragonborn and Half-Dragons (also in the pictures)
Dragonborn are not descendants from dragons, but where first made with magic turning dragon eggs into dragonborn as slaves for the dragons. This is also explained in the Dragonlance books.
Half-dragons are the offspring of a dragon and another species, and it does not have to be humans.
draconians are not dragonborn
Lore varies dependent on setting
I wanna make a gnomish barbarian one of these days
My favourite race is the tortle as they are AMAZING
So far, I've played as Elves, Halflings, and Dwarves.
Can you combine races? Or create half races of races who don’t already have a half human race? (Such as Half Dragonborn?)
Yes
definitly considering a pansexual pinguin that poops icicles as my first ever character, this is a fantasy world after all, it fits right in
Tiefling ❤️
Hey you acknowledged Duergar! Cheers!
My favourite race and class is Grey Elf - Magic User
I heard about the thri-kreen and immediately hopped onto it and pn every campaign im in im a thri-kreen
Your forgetting about the good races like leonin and aasimar
More of Madeline is necessary. Well presented.
Used to play a Kobold sorc called Chunky in 3.5 ed.
A Spell Jammer video would be nice. I have a gut feeling it will be coming to 5e very soon. 😉 😉
4:40 I'm still waiting to fing out what exact race Dragonbait is?
Dragonbait is a finhead saurial and there are many diffrent saurial .
forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Dragonbait
Yeah, he's a Saurial (dinosaur person) - surprised these aren't talked about more
I tend to lean towards tabaxi for that climbing speed.
My first character is gonna be dragonborn druid soo far
I honestly like Dragonborn.
Is there any race with wings? Or can earn wings, or multiple sets? Like an angel race?
Fairy I think, I'm just getting into dnd but my brother plays and I believe he is a fairy
Yes, but there is not many DM's that will allow it. The reason for it because it grants a lot of power very early on. It also removes a lot of challenge and issues that can be presented. So it depends very much on the type of game being played.
Dragonborn aren't descendants of Dragons, despite their name. IIRC they were from Abeir and got here during the spellplague, they do have Draconic abilities, but they're their own separate race.
Peep, the first Dragonborn were the gifted of Bahaumut who reforged other races in his image. They went into a giant egg cocoon for a month, adjusted by their races' adulthood to human age, and then emerged with better stats, wings, tails, eyes, et. al. It was beautiful.
you're trying to apply one settings rules to a multi-setting toolkit
Man, i wanted to be a dog fighter...
All my characters end up human, with the exception of a winter eladrin
I'm here for fun I never played DND cuz none of my friends are into that
WotC, can we please switch to using “Ancestry” from now on?
2:18 now it's canon: dragonborns do not have a tail. :)
Standard ones, no, but there are official variants that have them.
Lmao thought was Marzia for a sec
Can I make up a race?
If the DM allows it yes.
Time stamps?
so a wharfing is a hobbit
Kenku always play kenku
Warforged.
That's easy. Answer: Humans.
Aasimar
Didn't D&D have a stance against racial stereotyping?
thought you were calling them lineages now
ya'll need to start moderating your youtube comments or deactivate them.
Ree
Human, half-ling, dwarf, elf, half-elf, and half-orc. I miss those days before all the obnoxious and/or furry adjacent races invaded the players handbook.
Anyone you want, it literally makes no difference anymore...
@@gabrielrussell5531 Punished?? Lol!! I've never been punished for playing a less than optimal character. In fact when I started playing MOST characters were FAR below optimal. We all still has tons of fun. Probably more than we do today...
I hope Bethesda doesn’t here D&D has Dragonborns. They might demand micro transactions
You do know that Elder Scrolls started out as a D&D campaign back in the days right?
Gonna have a hard time with this now that the new religious group managing DnD has forbid the use of key concepts and words we use to understand eachother.
huh?
Dragonborn narcissist 😆
I blame the influence of MMOs and CRPGs for this unnecessary race-option explosion. I almost always go Human. Sometimes I get crazy with one of the other basic Tolkien-inspired races. I cringe every time a new flavor-of-the-month anthropomorphic animal race is released.
Unless the campaign is specifically designed to center around or include a large demographic of some other race, then making that oddball race just forces the other characters, the DM, all NPCs every time you meet a new one, and the world in general either react to or ignore your race.
It's a lot of extra work for the rest of the table to properly accommodate your unique race selection. Everybody wants to be the unique one, so then table has to decide how it is that a party of an Owlin, a Tortle, a Tiefling, an Aasimar, a Drow and Goliath besties walk into a bar. The DM has to decide and then RP every unique NPCs feelings about your specific race and then react to that accordingly. Every time your purple-skinned orange-eyes tiefling throws back his hood on a rando NPC for the 'look-at-me-I'm-unique' shock value the DM has to play it out one more time. Eventually your character's unique race just ends up being ignored because it takes up less time and energy that way.
In my real life experience, nearly everyone who picks some exotic race eventually ends up RPing as if they were just a human with human psychology and motivations, just with an owl head, horns, or some hardly-worth-it advantage from a race feature. So what's the point?
Nope..
Glad you're not making things political with this like you have in the past.
Excellent topic, useless video.
What race should you play? Your own in real life, of course. Anything else is grotesque cultural appropriation and means you're a fascist. Twitter has spoken.
