You've done good here, Mark. A video on this subject has been so badly needed and that fact you've made it thorough while avoiding being condescending is a testament to your knowledge and character. It's the perfect video to share with interested folks.
Hi Mark, long time fan of your content, and I'm glad you're happy with your decision about where you want to take this channel and it's content. As part of your community engagement, would you consider doing a semi-regular map/campaign ideas/lore video where the community send in some of their work and you could talk constructively about what you like? For example, a series of videos about fan submitted maps and related tips and tricks on worldbuilding?
Absolutely agree with everyone here. You deserve it, Mark! And High Rollers have absolutely been one of the major influences in my starting my own group at work last year :)
I recently joined my first ever DnD group. My DM sent me this in the beginning, knowing I'm a complete beginner and I tend to be anxious about new situations, and it really helped a lot to understand the basics of how the game works, so thanks for making this :)

How I've understood it is that dnd is just a basic framework, and you can do whatever you want. It's an improvised story being written by multiple people, making literally every session unique. It's so cool. Also magic is great.

It's great to see the game is still strong I'm coming back to the game after 40 yrs I was one of the founding members of the first European dungeon master's guild
I have been wanting to get into dnd for a while now but i have always been overwhelmed when trying to learn. This video was so helpful and easy to understand and follow along. I am very excited to start playing dnd thank you for the help :)
The people who work at the pizza place next to my gas station play every Saturday and when I showed interest they invited me to sit in with them so I can learn and play so im so excited! I've always wanted to get into this and I'm really happy I have some people to teach me
After a few attempts at trying to explain DnD to my 9 year old son, I gave in and stuck him in front of this video. You’ve really helped to break it down for him and he’s grasped the basics of it I’m really excited to start a wee campaign with him and my dad. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, 9 years to be precise. Thank you dude.
@@rejuch5136 DnD actually is a great game that involves working together, problem solving, ppl skills, creativity. The last one u sadly don't have considering ur go to insult seems to be sexualizing a child and "Nerd" Suuuuper creative. U think we hurt by that as DnD players? 😂😂 We been dealing with that shit for years dude. Get a life and better insults
@@rejuch5136 I'm done arguing with u now so imma block. I have better things to do than argue with a nobody who thinks sexualizing children is comedy or an insult.

Urs sadly seems like a cheap, overused trope of a typical bully, no one special, just living out thier days being a miserable, mad, lonely person who wonders why everyone eventually stops calling. I love how open and accepting you are towards new players! Yesterday, I played my first pen and paper game with a bunch of friends (all beginners except for 2) and now we‘re planning to start dungeons and dragons. I was a bit insecure about it because I don‘t feel like I fit into the trope of a dnd player, I‘m a very girly girl and not that into stereotypically „„nerdy““ stuff. We had a blast playing though, and after watching this I feel much more confident, so thanks a lot!
i relate to you a lot!! as very girl girl who’s just a beginner i often feel bad for being a beginner in the first place and for like, fitting into many girly stereotypes about girls who play dnd ( yes i ill play a half elvish sorceress princess what about it ? )
This is such a great, clean, well-organized, informative video!! You've clearly worked your ass off on this one and it SHOWS!! thank you for sharing your expertise!!
Oh YOU! Thank you mate, very kind words and you have been a big inspiration for me over the last year! Hope we can do somehow find a way to do some stuff together!
@@SherlockHulmesDM Uh uh uh I would love to see whatever you two come up with. :) Big fan of both of you two, and currently catching up as fast as I can and being thoroughly addicted to your High Rollers Aerois campaign. Excellent video Mark, very informative.
I am very much so on the spectrum, and learning new things without having someone in front of me to ask is a real, real big pain. This is clearly a very in depth game, and I feel like I got so much more out of it from this video. Thanks dude.
Omg you saved me. I was dragged into a D&D group and was made DM and I haven't played in +6 years, plus I've never been a DM. So I this has helped me refresh my memory on how it all works 🙏 Thank You!
Super helpful! My husband and I were in search of a new New Year's tradition, one that avoids crowds and can be safe/fun. We also have been wanting to get into D&D for years. So, this video really helped me put it all together, and our first D&D New Year shall commence. Cheers!
huh rarely you see a smooth introduction to dnd like this like its cramped with info but not overwhelming. really good if thats how you start with a bang I am excited for what come up later :D
Watching this video about 30 years ago would have been immeasurably helpful to my confused-ass '80s kid-brain. This is *exactly* the type of video I hoped to find when I finally, once and for all, sought out a properly thorough explanation of D&D. Since the very first time I heard the words "Dungeons & Dragons" as a young schoolboy it has baffled me. Hell, I though it was a video game for well over a decade! The many friends and co-workers who play have never been able to sufficiently cover all of the important bases, such that it made sense. You, on the other hand, nailed it! I appreciate you taking the time to make this easily digestible crash course on such a nuanced and vivid world. AT LAST! I FINALLY GET!
Hey, I watched your Deus Ex and Mafia Remake let's plays. I don't usually watch those but your genuine personality made them enjoyable to watch. Can't stand those Markiplier and Pewdiepie types.
I first played D&D in 1978, on and off since then. I happened by this video because it's been a few years, and I'm once again getting interested again. In my opinion, this is one of the best intro to D&D videos I've seen - you seriously did an excellent job. I love that you noted that action failures are OK for the quality of gameplay - some of the best campaign twists I've played through required the entire campaign fail - it's not the end of the story if you have a good DM.
Having mainly been introduced to DND through high rollers and wanting to play myself I was really happy to find your how to make a character sheet videos. Now I'm really hoping you do some "How to be a GM" because I have friends that are interested in playing but they don't have the knowledge of DND so I would be the GM and I am lost. I've found I like your play style and how you teach so please please go more in depth on this! Specifically, I have trouble knowing how to balance encounters and spellcasters are iffy since I don't know how to explain spells slots vs cantrips to players. If anyone would like to provide their opinion or try and help, I'd be happy to hear!
How to GM stuff is on the cards for sure. Ive got a mix of stuff in the edit folder atm, mostly focused on new D&D players and LARP, but GM stuff like building encounters etc are being scripted. :)
I just decided to give DnD a try this year and have been looking for a clear and in-depth explanation of the basics for weeks and FINALLY found this. It was perfect!! EXACTLY what I was looking for to bring clarity to some of the details I still loosely understood. Thank you for this!
I actually have a friend at my local church who’s interested in dnd but knows nothing about how it works. So I’m sending him videos like these to help explain it to him. Thank you for making this video it’s a huge help
Thank you so much for this. I've been trying to get into D&D for years, but most groups don't want a noob. I finally found a group and I'm playing my first game of D&D tomorrow! I had tried reading the player's handbook, but found the 300+ pages a tad overwhelming for a Saturday night. This video was a very refreshing and welcome intro to the game. Thank you!
What a fab resource for new players, as a long-time DM I've been trying to get new people into D&D during lockdown and man, I wish I'd seen this video before then. Everything's so well explained and honestly, I made some key mistakes while doing it myself.
I've always wanted to play DnD and never had a group. Recently I've found a lot of other people like me who have never played but have wanted to but felt too intimidated to play with seasoned players. So we are gonna start a newbie group and this video was very helpful! :D
This is extremely helpful. My son has shown interest in D&D. While I always wanted to play, I did not have friends into it growing up and when I met a group I was moving away only getting to play a couple times with them. They were a hardcore group, showed up in costumes and in character, had tons of miniatures, 3d models for towns, dungeons, and maps, handbooks galore, physical coins for gold, silver, copper, etc... 3 side die, 4 sides, 6 sided, 10 sided, 12 sided, 20 sided, 100 sided... well you get the point. So as my son asked about it, I looked into it and it all seemed so overwhelming. I am now on the right path to start preparing, his birthday is a week after christmas so a good chance to get all he needs and more. I plan to DM a game during his sleepover on his bday and hopefully hook a few of his friends on it so he can start a group of his own.
This video really helped me get over the thought of “Oh, I wanna play, but it seems so difficult…” and I already have silly character ideas streaming through my mind! I hope I can join the DnD club my high school has, maybe I could play my first campaign there. Thank you for showing me where to start. :)
Holy shit mark. I was just on the old channel to say: "The content wasn't that bad after all." wich it still wasn't but holy crap this is slik as hell. That must have been a lot of effort. If so. Don't feel the need to make every format here that elaborated. What i want to say is: this is a masterfully done video. With the setting the talking, the cuts,... I think this does not have to be your standard for every video and i hooe it does not hinder you making some simpler ones from time to time as well but it is really good.
I was roped into my first d&d session but haven't had time to figure out how to play so this is a great quick intro for me because it's starting in 15 minuges
@@yummylesecond it went awesome, we didn't really continue it after our first session but it was a blast! It was candy themed with a whole map and everything and my character was a detective dead set on solving the peppermint murders. He ended up flirting with a guard and met up with some other candy folk in a wagon beforehand (unbeknownst to him one of them was the murderer he was going after, a character played by a close friend) we ended when we got to the tavern
I have to say, you are easily one of the best DMs I've watched, and High Rollers has been one of my favorite d&d shows to watch for a few years now. You got me into Critical Role as well and while they are great and their production value is fantastic (they are professional voice actors after all) your games feel much more.... fun and funny. They feel like home games but on a professional set, which I love. Well done sir, and I look forward to seeing more of your content in the future.
This video definatley hit the Mark. One of the simplest yet comprehensive "first guide" videos I've seen thus far. This'll be my new go-to to give to people asking about DnD.
I've been playing D&D for a few years and have met some people recently that wanted to learn how to play. Now I tried my best to explain but wanted to find someone who can explain better then I. I've watched 20+ different people explain the vasics of the game. Now none was bad but I needed someone who could explain in a way they would understand. Then I found your video. I juts want to say thank you. You made explain the game so much easier.
i’m in love with everything you do and i’m so proud i just want to say thank you for inspiring me to become a dm and play dnd for myself ever since i watched the first episode of lightfall all those years ago i’ve been enamoured by your creations and the worlds you make with your storytelling thank you for sparking that thing that allowed me to make closer friends and go on fun adventures of my own i’m so glad you’ve gotten to this point and i will continue to support this channel and i can’t wait to see what’s in store!
This is a VERY comprehensible rundown. My daughter has shown interest in playing we have the Starter Set coming as well as the Essentials Kit. The structure of this video is remarkable. thank you so much!
You literally calmed my mental breakdown about not understanding anything at all from dnd rn lmao thanks for that. Now I just need to find a group to play with while having crippling social anxiety. Fun.
I’ve been watching “Lawyers & Dragons” on Hoeg Law’s RUclips channel. All of the players are lawyers of course and it’s fun to see how each player approaches the game differently. I’m impressed with how the game can be whatever you imagine it to be and how fun!
Thank you for this fantastic introduction. Having grown up in the 80s and always wondering about D&D I am finally getting started! This video has helped me immensely. Your enthusiasm is infectious and I am blown away by the niceness of the entire D&D community in welcoming new players with open arms.
Man!!! This is amazing quality. I really like that the segments of the videos are marked. I will be sending this to anyone who is thinking of joining my dnd group thanks man!!
I've been intrigued by D&D for a while, and I've watched several "intro to D&D" videos. They're all helpful in their own ways, but this one is my personal favorite. It's comprehensive enough for me to have a sense of what's going on without bogging down in TOO many details, and it's simple enough to follow. Thanks for creating it!
Thank you, Mark. I've been wanting to play some DND for myself ever since you guys started your Lightfall campaign, but was very overwhelmed by the many rules (and not knowing if people would be interested). This video was extremely helpful in alleviating some of the stress and worries of trying to DM for my first time. Thank you for introducing me to DND. I never would have known what it was if I hadn't found you guys, and it has been one of my favorite things to watch each week. I started getting a group together recently, and I think we're all really excited to get started soon. Again, thank you Mark for putting so much effort into this video to make it easier to figure out.
@@MamaBat.23 I went to my first ever dnd session a week ago and to my second one the day before yesterday. It was around 10 hours! We started at 7 p.m. and I called a taxi around 6:15 a.m....no regrets at all
I must say, this is perhaps one of the best "Dungeons & Dragons: How Do?" videos I've seen yet. 22:12 - It should be noted that "Critical Fumbles" were _never_ a core rule of D&D in _any_ edition _ever*._ The rule was introduced to D&D in the Dragon Magazine issue #39 article "Critical Hits and Spectacular Misses", and became such a popular house rule that the majority of players eventually came to believe that it was an actual part of the game. However, the rule only ever started appearing in the Dungeon Master's Guides from 3rd Edition onward as an optional rule (4th Edition even actively cautions against it). Using the core rules, the _only_ effect a Natural 1 has _ever_ had is an automatic miss on your attack roll. *Note that I personally have only played from AD&D onwards, so maybe it _was_ a core rule back in 1st Edition.
You're literally one of my favourite DM's out there Mark, High Rollers is one of the first things that really turned D&D into a passion for me. Hope everything goes well with the channel and in general. Thanks 😄
Finding this video is super helpful and a great thing to watch as a starting d&d player. My fiancee is the DM and has been playing for a couple years and they are so excited that myself and their brothers are wanting to play as first time players. This is their first time being the DM and they were nervous that the rest of us wouldn't enjoy the story that they were creating. But honestly even if sometimes the details are vague at first if we ask then they will tell us all the details we ask for and it is so much fun
Thank you for this wonderful video. Many many moons ago in Faerun, I had a few quests with 2nd Ed. Advance. It was confusing, frustrating, and for the most part the friends I had at the time, we pretty much threw out dice rolling altogether. Much later in life, being asked to attend a quest and basically starting out from scratch (wanting to play by rules now), this video helped explain everything I need to know. Thank you so much for taking the time to create this video to explain the basics, and making sense of the Player's Handguide. So much information overload, and this video cleared that right up. Thank you kind sir!
I've always found D&D slightly intimidating due to organising / learning rules etc. I think I'll finally give it ago tho. I mainly paint small warhammy mini's etc. Great effort on the content & look forward to the bright future of this channel :)
Thank you very much from Twitch, and it didn't disappoint me a bit. I got the information needed and gave me a relaxing realization that not every campaign needs to be long, and not every campaign needs that articulated role play
This is super helpful. I have a hard time keeping up with rules and doing things by the book, so having an experienced player say there isn't a right or wrong way to play is very reassuring.
Been binging and trying to find videos to learn more about Dnd as I’ve been wanting to get into it with my friends and even try DM’ing once I’ve got a fair amount of xp under my belt- this really helps, ty so much for making this!!
As for dressing up, I think it's a great idea for everyone to wear one item of clothing (a cloak, hat, ring, whatever) that connect your person to your character. This minor detail slowly builds character identity in the group, preserves continuity between sessions, and also builds more immersion because you get the "okay" to actually be your character (it's not just your imagination). More than this is too much and less than this makes it too casual. It's a small request for the DM and it makes it more interesting to those who might watch on youtube or wherever.
Thank you so much! I’ve wanted to get into this for so long but never knew anyone who had experience/was even interested, so I’m doing some research before embarking on finding a beginner friendly group lol. So stoked (:
Going to my first dnd session today was supper nervous about not knowing what to do and or doing things all wrong after watching your vid I would say I'm confident I can do it. Thanks for calming my nerves
I wish this video had been around when I got some of my cousins hooked on D&D, would've helped them feel more comfortable starting. Really great video dude!
I've always been interested in learning D&D but I never had the friends to play it with. Recently, one of my closest friends got into it. He likes playing as the DM. Unfortunately, he's in another country, but I've known him for 6 years. None of his friends like to play IRL, despite the fact he has the boardgame and setup. So, I have decided to take on learning the rules and gameplay of Dungeons & Dragons so that [Likely in a few years time] I will be able to make my way over there, so that we can play together and have a great time. This is my first step towards it. [P.S. Brilliant video, made me laugh and helped me learn. Thank youuuu!]
This was a fantastic video! Well done! I am new to D&D, just got my players handbook, and researching a little bit. Very excited to start my first session with some friends! Thank you for this!!
Participating in my first official DnD game tonight with a pro we paid to DM. SUPER excited and glad we get to just enjoy with someone good at the helm =D This was extremely helpful, THANK YOU!
Nice video. I remember being a 12 years old in 1983 so I am about the age that Will, Dustin, & the gang's characters are in Stranger things. They kind of nailed the whole nerd D&D stigma. I remember getting D&D and reading on how to play. The only guy that played in my neigborhood was a well known nerd down the street. I ended up playing with my dad's bosses son who lived in another neighborhood and went to a different school so we can freely talk about D&D. We would have sleep overs and play D&D. We both got out of it when our mom's got wind of the murder that was linked to D&D & they thought it was a dangerous occult activity. We definitely had to use or imagination a lot more back in those days.
@@osiels.871 Oh I'm probably not the right person to ask for advice here - I've only played a two hour session so far. It was fun, but I spent a lot of time just tagging along and trying to figure things out by watching the more experienced players :) We didn't play any of the official editions, one of my friends wrote out the entire plot herself (and I'm impressed).
Trying to DM for the first time (and play DnD for thr first time too) and your video was quick and concise and explained everything I needed to feel confident to learn the game! Thank you!
I’ve never really been able to follow along with tutorial videos because of my many processing disorders but this video is so well made I actually get it!! Thank you tons man:) I bought a set and I’m finally ready to play. much love!
Mark, DnD parent, I'm so happy I found your channel!! Ive played a mini campaign, and that's all. I felt like I couldn't commit to a new game, but you give me confidence to study the game and rules! Now my friend is interested and wants me to be the DM! I have a lot to learn...but I have you to look up to! 💙 Thanks Mark!!
Thanks for the tutorial, I'm a 48 year old, new to d&d. Just started a family adventure with my youngest son as dm. Looking around for ways to become a better adventurer. Not used to role playing lol
I've been watching or playing DnD for years now and I was today years old when I found out what "DC" stands for :D Anyway, great video, Mark! :) I'll be definitely sharing that around.
Tried to play for the first time a few days ago with a group entirely made up of rookies. We spent 2.5 hours going over rules only to spend the next 3 hours having no idea what we were doing. This video has me hopeful that when we give it another try tonight it will go much more smoothly.
Don't worry about the rules so much. DM should get an understanding for how skill checks, attack rolls work, etc. Players should just learn what their characters can do. Figure out the rest by playing the game. Get everyone to watch an episode of HighRollers (my D&D show) as an example of play.
I notice, respect and appreciate the Mistborn and Stormlight books in the background. This video was amazing! As a soon-to-be first time DM to a group who's never played before, in a country where resources are very expensive, this was a game changer (literally.) Thanks for everything!
Id love videos like this for maybe other systems also! D&D for me at least was decently easy to understand (Makes sense its on its 5th edition and made by the greats of TTRPGs) but plenty of other systems i still just half understand when i sit down to play them. Anyways glad you're back to a channel like this and exited to see whatsup in the future!
I'm not as much of an expert on other systems, so don't know if I would make videos like this one, but certainly want to cover non D&D games on the channel from time to time too. :)
@@SherlockHulmesDM Its true this video showed a lot of your experience playing 5e and thats not something anyone can have for every system but if you ever end up running a couple games of Call of Cthulhu, Apocalypse World (or one of its many spawns) or any of these great but kind of specific systems id love to see a video about it from you! :)

Thanks for this! - I've been gaming since 1989 - from warhammer, WFRP, Dark future, 40k, Cthulu, ADND arguably GW centric games - recently i've been asked by a bunch of cool folks to lead a group. This daunting task, despite my years of gaming and extensive collections has really made me rise to the challenge - thankyou for making this ecellent content, much appreciated!
Bit late to the video mate but wanted to comment to say it was excellent. Myself and my friends played as teenagers and havent played since. We're now in our 40s and despite still gaming regularly we have never picked DnD back up. Thats going to change in 2025. I've ordered the Essentials kit and i plan to run that over the course of next year. Your video was brilliantly put together and very clear. Thank you. Subscribed
This intro was very helpful. I've never played or even seen a game beyond seeing it on big bang theory. I thought it might be a fun way to play with my 9 and 10 year old kids. Something where we could use our imaginations together more than in board games. I recently signed up for the adventurers club which is geared more toward kids. Once I got it, I had no idea how to start a game. I've been watching videos trying to figure it out so we can play our first game but was feeling completely lost in all the details of gameplay. This made it much more clear and I am feeling ready to jump in and give it a go. Thank you for the great explainer. Wish me luck!
Amazing new channel, Mark! I love the way you're able to explain the rules and lay everything out. Makes it so easy to understand and follow. Looking forward to your videos on how to play and run DnD games. Maybe one day I'll be brave enough to try dming a game on my own lol. Best of luck in the future
Me as my friends decided we wanted to play D&D together recently. I always wanted to try it, but I didn’t really know the rules. This video helped so much!!
Great video overall, will send it on to someone who needs it ☺️. Good luck with your new channel. I’m already looking forward to see what you come up with. Exciting. For the future: would drop the change between angles..Perhaps only me being old and grumpy, but it gives me flashbacks to very tiresome MTV shows.
Much appreciated! (the switching angles thing is a way to keep attention, I found leaving it on one static angle for large chunks of time made it kinda boring and easy to lose focus).
I’ve always thought I wasn’t into D&D. My dad would always tell me he thought I’d like the game, but I thought it was weird. But then I’d turn around and talk about a complicated roleplaying game that I enjoy. So yeah, I do like D&D now that I look into it, and I’m excited to create characters!
This is a great and simple video! if there is any other tips, or things that would help beginner players, then could u make a part 2? starting d&d is a struggle sometimes.
I've been wanting to play dnd for so long and this is so helpful! i finally set up a group and I'm the dm - we haven't played yet but we're having great fun creating characters and relationships and backstories! thank you so much for this

Super helpful! My husband and I were in search of a new New Year's tradition, one that avoids crowds and can be safe/fun. We also have been wanting to get into D&D for years. So, this video really helped me put it all together, and our first D&D New Year shall commence. Cheers!
Just finished New Year's! How's that new tradition going?
huh rarely you see a smooth introduction to dnd like this like its cramped with info but not overwhelming. really good if thats how you start with a bang I am excited for what come up later :D
Super pleased it comes across that way. That's certainly what I was going for! Thank you!
This has been absolutely glorious.
Buddy hearing that from you is a genuine honour. :) Thanks for checking out the video!
@@SherlockHulmesDM Yay! I figured they would be but happy you confirmed! Can't wait to see all the new stuff coming out!
I just decided to give DnD a try this year and have been looking for a clear and in-depth explanation of the basics for weeks and FINALLY found this. It was perfect!! EXACTLY what I was looking for to bring clarity to some of the details I still loosely understood. Thank you for this!
"The Dm, let's call him Matt" Oh man I love his High Rollers streams!
I actually have a friend at my local church who’s interested in dnd but knows nothing about how it works. So I’m sending him videos like these to help explain it to him. Thank you for making this video it’s a huge help

Exactly what I made it for. :) Thanks!

You're one of the GOATs Mark, this is a great resource! Thanks for spending the time to put this together.
Thanks Zach!
Lol No pressure: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! 🐐
I was just on the old channel to say:
"The content wasn't that bad after all." wich it still wasn't but holy crap this is slik as hell.

Well done sir, and I look forward to seeing more of your content in the future.
i’ve been so interested in making my own campaign to play with my friends for YEARS and i might finally try thanks to this
This video definatley hit the Mark.
You made explain the game so much easier.
i’m in love with everything you do and i’m so proud
i just want to say thank you for inspiring me to become a dm and play dnd for myself ever since i watched the first episode of lightfall all those years ago i’ve been enamoured by your creations and the worlds you make with your storytelling

i’m so glad you’ve gotten to this point and i will continue to support this channel and i can’t wait to see what’s in store!
What an absolutely wonderful comment.
This is a VERY comprehensible rundown. My daughter has shown interest in playing we have the Starter Set coming as well as the Essentials Kit. The structure of this video is remarkable. thank you so much!
I love the unnecessary camera angles. They aren't required, but they're still great.

@@MamaBat.23 so, how was it? :)
Good to see you back doing video's again!
Rules you will honestly pick up as you go. :) The hardest party is genuinely getting people together on a regular basis. XD
I've been wanting to re-learn how to play dnd for a long while now. Thank you for this
As for dressing up, I think it's a great idea for everyone to wear one item of clothing (a cloak, hat, ring, whatever) that connect your person to your character.

Excellent introduction. Good luck on this new venture, you truly deserve all the success you and Highrollers have.
Thank you so much! I'm going to play DnD for the first time today and I was a bit overwhelmed - but now I feel super prepared and I'm very excited.

Bit late to the video mate but wanted to comment to say it was excellent. Myself and my friends played as teenagers and havent played since. We're now in our 40s and despite still gaming regularly we have never picked DnD back up. Thats going to change in 2025.
