I find hilarious the idea of making a Triton Paladin that actually HATED living in the Ocean, if he had to describe it he would put it as a "cold, wet, dark, monster-infected liquid hell" and the very reason why he is on land is that he swam towards the nearest landmass as soon as he was of age and never looked back, finding "Landfolk's Food" delicious and exotic, as well as being a Paladin because is the closest thing to the Triton's military training he could find once he looked for a living lol.

I like Tritons and I'm in the middle of playing a pirate-themed Dnd game. I decided to make my pirate crew mostly Tritons with some splash of Tortles and other Aquatic races too. Good video bud. Keep up the good work.

Oath of Open Sea feels a like redundant for a Triton Paladin.... But man do I want to try it!

Me and my friend are just getting into DnD and are making our characters. I was easily smitten by tritons because I LOVE anything to do with merfolk and the mysteries of the sea. I was wanting to originally be a siren up until I found out They're not a playable race. But I found a loophole: Triton Bard, College of the Muse. And my main character backstory is that she was raised by sirens as a child and while she loves her instrument, her voice is her greatest asset

That's great! What sort of magic items are you going to try to get to augment/highlight it? Also, don't forget that thaumaturgy can make your voice loud.We get that it's a cleric cantrip...

@@SkullSplitter I'm learning items right now so I don't really know any specifically at the moment, I'm *really* new lol. But I did see a thing or two about jewelery being an option (ring/bracelet of seduction) and pearls being a help too. If you have any advice for a newbie I'd love to hear it :)
Edit: also my friend is a cleric and her brother is a DM. Would that work either with having my character have thaumaturgy?

If the DM allows it, you could certainly have the cleric amplify your voice if needed for the wombo combo. The spell definition says "Your voice" but maybe clear it with the DM before needing it. If you want to be a *little* evil, have the cleric ask that without context first =)

Really digging playing a Triton Circle of the Stars Druid for the Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign I'm in. Everything is too frozen to swim in but the constant cold resistance is real nice.

My current character for my husband's DM session of Theros is a Triton Bard, looking to try and mimic the 'land-dwelling bards above' and to spread Thassa's word and stories across the surface, while learning from them their songs and myths. Right now, her backstory is that her birth name was Arynae, but changed it to Saphir upon deciding to leave the sea and find her fortune on land. She's the youngest of five siblings, and all but her father essentially disowned her for this decision. After her father passed away from an illness, her eldest sibling Attileo renamed himself Rokosmos (Greek for Riptide) and assumed rank as patriarch of the family.
I went College of Lore, having proficiency in the Lute, the Flute, and the Harp...and am currently level 5 with a +7 in Perception and a +9 in Performance. :D

What happens if a race that has naturally swimming speed (triton) goes under water with heavy armour does that mean they sink to the bottom of the ocean or do they stay were they are because they naturally have swimming speed

Super excited about a Triton Swashbuckler/Hexblade I made recently. Really solid combo so I decided not to worry too much about optimizing. I chose Triton for the utility spells, and even took Fey Touched so I've got a bunch of free one a day spells. I didn't bother with Pact of the Blade and instead opted for Pact of the Tome for more cantrips and yup, ritual spells. Doubling down again on the free spells, I took Mask of Many Faces as my 2nd invocation for at will Disguise Self. Hahaha! Tell me I've only got 2 spell slots. Now I can use those spells slots on things like Invisibility, Darkness and Suggestion. And having Silence as a ritual on a Rogue just makes me so happy.

Right now my justification for my Triton being on land is because he is an aficionado of art. Oil based paintings and really anything would not survive well underwater

What are some surface customs that they would see as barbaric or funny?

    • @jeremiahdriscoll9095
      @jeremiahdriscoll9095 4 года назад +7

This is going to vary depending on how Triton culture is defined and fleshed out, but it could be as simple as courting/mating rituals, method of governing, dance or music. Each of these could be vastly different under the sea.
Do Tritons eat fish? They almost certainly don't cook them, so they could see charring the meat of animals for food as barbaric or odd.
By the book, Triton society is Lawful and predominantly, personally, the Tritons would be as well. They might find the amount of crime and violence perpetrated on one's own people in the surface world shocking. Training fights would be commonplace in a martial society, but duels to the death might be unheard of in a place where you need to keep all your forces ready to protect from any evils from the Elemental Plane of Water attempting to invade the Prime Material Plane.
Finally, if Triton society is one that takes care of its own regardless of ability, seeing poor and homeless surface dwellers could certainly give them pause.
Very little of Triton society is outlined in the current source material, and much of what's written about them in 5E is from the perspective of making a lone Triton PC to play mostly-surface-world adventures. It will generally be up to the player and DM to flesh out their society and culture, and that will ultimately dictate how alien surface dwellers will seem to them.
