- We all know how important live bait can be for fishing, whether it be inshore, offshore, salt or fresh. Live bait can be the secret to catching more fish. In this weeks Tackle Tuesday I show you How to Build a Homemade livewell (baitwell). This is an easy DIY (do it yourself) . project that can save you hundreds of dollars, by avoiding overpriced and unnecessary livewells from the bait and tackle shop. The livewell in this video can be used to keep a variety of baits alive from shad, shrimp, pilchards, sardines, pinfish, bass, bluegill, peacock bass, shiners, blue crabs, grunts and so much more. It can also be used transport pet fish for ponds.

Going to make this video again with a much bigger well in the future.
the tsunami pump has a removable cartridge, it slides out. you could use that as the drain without cutting anymore holes
Landshark Fishing what battery should I use
Really wanting to use that exact battery. What kind is it?
My name is victor
you need bait for fishing in 2021 i am selling minnows only in canada
Awesome... I have a tank and now I'll have a pump, thanks to this video.... vic I love all your videos true monster....
Great DYI video. One suggestion for connecting your wiring to the battery. Solder your wires together and cover them with heat shrink wrap. The shrink wrap will prevent water from contacting your copper wiring and causing corrosion. Keep the vids coming. Thanks
Excellent video !!! This is exactly what I needed and thanks for the links to the equipment.
I enjoy all the tackle Tuesdays, I appreciate all the knowledge
Thank you for the video and the knowledge, sir!!! I ordered all the ingredients from the links you so graciously included and I’m building my live well next week to your exact specifications. Much appreciated sir.
Curtis Clark how did it turn out?
How did it work?
thanks Vic for that tutorial on that live well you are an excellent teacher and a great fisherman like that live well I think I'm going to do the same thing take care and keep on fishing
Very well done!! You guys are awesome!!! Keep up the good guys!!!!
I have had a portable bait well for a long time. Quick tip for you. Add a stainless inlet adapter to the inside pump and it will keep trash and fish scales out of your pump. Love the pump you chose. You can actually buy replacement motors for them and want have to tear up your plumbing :)
Great Stuff !!!
Would have liked to have seen the "Live Bait Well" in action with "Salt water and Livies", in it !!!
Best idea IS to put a 'Drain Plug' of sorts in the bottom, just makes life so much easier when it comes to emptying !!!
Thanks for making this video Viktor !! , makes a LOT of sense, especially for those not fishing where they get their live bait from !!!!
Cheers "Down Under Mike"
Cant u just flip it over? Lol
Awesome job Victor!!!
Great video and supply list! Thanks for this.
Live bait works best👍👍
Made this today and it works great
First like! Victor you should do more fly fishing videos. Great video already getting an idea on how to make my own live well for stalking the pond on my ranch! Keep up the great videos😅
Very informative video. Gave me a good starting point.
Great video Vic 🤙🏽
Great video Victor the best
Acetone to clean your hands and around the fittings. Wipe off excess 5200 then dampen a rag with acetone and all will clean up nicely! Nice video.
Awsome bro !!!
Brilliant thank you
Great, simple project. Lots of value and low cost, low risk project. I think it is easily scalable to smaller or larger live wells. You're right, I can see how it doesn't really work for installation in a boat deck but some parts could lead in the right direction. Thanks. Oh yes, do more. And for us newbies, how about a minimal content offshore tackle box plus another for inshore and freshwater. Not too detailed just what tools and consumables are needed so we Don't get miles from home without the bare essentials. My best to Brook. Maybe she could help with Tackle Tuesday. ; -D
Excellent build thanks for sharing
Great video bud, thanks
Nice I'mma make one of these looks legit good work!!!
Did it work
Awesome stuff man!
Should definately run an inline fuse on your positive connection. It will be written on the pump which fuse is required. Great content mate
thank you for finally making this vid
Great presentation. Easy to follow instruction.
This was an awesome video bud.👍
Cool idea thank you and have a good day and stay safe
Nice, simple setup.
Great DIY
That's pretty cool
Nice vid man
Looks like a great Live Well! And sign me up as somebody who liked the video and loves all the stuff related to tackle and tactics!
I made a handy one out of a small bucket, that 5 gallon bucket is ideal. I drilled heaps of holes in the top 1/3 and zip tied a pool noodle near the lid all the way around it so it floats. I made a hatch in the lid to put the fish in easy and they can't jump out. I don't need any batteries or pumps, I tied on a rope and just hang it in the water and it floats. The good thing when you need to move spots there is always half a bucket of water from only drilling holes in the top 1/3 of the bucket. In some situations it isn't ideal, but for the most part it works awesome.
Hey Viktor as usual another great informative video well done! I like the tackle Tuesday videos
Nice vid!
Nice job!
I had trouble finding the swivel head at Lowe's or home depot but west marine had one for ten bucks, but if you want it to flow in a certain direction I had to position it in the direction I wanted it to be so the water would circulate before I applied the sealant. thanks for the video landshark!
hi love your vids and like your rod and reel set ups
Great video
Great video content. Workmanship without gloves ??? LOL
Effective job, YES !!! Gotta admit your cooking skills are
lot more polished. Enjoy your channel. Thanks.
Really enjoy your vid keep it up just some advice about 5200 , if you coat your hand with soap water it doesn't stick and a soapy spoon will give you smooth edges. Keep up the good work
Best idea posted here yet!
Others advise using WD40... the residue from it WILL kill Shrimp.
This is gonna help me out a lot. I'm about to start stocking a pond with catfish and need a way to move them by my self.
Built mine with some of your ideas thank you
Hey Victor how you doing brother just wanna say thanks for this video. But this video. Also want to say how I learned something today and it's going to help me thank you brother be safe out there.
Awesome video
More tackle tuesdays please
Lol o I was dying at the title, very good sir very good 😂
your channel is growing so fast
what battery should I get for this? any recommendations?
Here is a suggestion for the drain plug that might be useful , don't use a plug like the ones on a ice chest. Use a ball valve. You can get a twist ball valve or a lever ball valve. These two types of values can be used to on pvc containers. Home Depot is a good place to find these and are pretty cheap to buy. Can't wait to see you use this bait tank on juno pier. Take care and happy holidays.
sup Victor. love your videos. do have any videos on how to rig live bait for pier fishing. much aooreciated. and keep those videos coming.
Hey thanks ,it is a very good instructional video . How long van you run the pump on a 12 volt battery, before it fades?
Question. Is the pump got a filter in it. I know the shad I use the scales come off easy. Was wondering if the pump had a filter.
you ever plan on doing any fishing out of san diego next year? i highly recommend it! the blue fin bite is crazy!
your vids are awesome going to build one. you would of finished faster but your hole saw was spinning backwards. LOL. you and brook keep up the good work love your vids
when you are cutting plastic with a whole saw if you run the hole saw in reverse you get a much cleaner cut than running it normally ... watch the aquaponics videos and you'll see most everyone doing this and talking about ,,,
Cool,
Great video bro. can you do a video on the braid vs mono debate i want to hear your opinon. from NZ fan.
MASTER BAITER
Agustin's Fishing life bruh 😂😂😂😂
I saw that too
Agustin A. that's me
How long can I keep bait in the back of my truck with a recirculating system like this?
nice.
another quality ass perfect ass video helping fellow anglers yet kid only has 70k subs, should have 700k easy
What about portable recirculating LW for something like, say, a Jon boat that doesn't have internal LW? I know the priming issue (hose over the side of the boat), but I believe there are diaphragm pumps that can overcome this. Would be a cool option for someone who doesn't have much cash, doesn't want to modify their boat (below-waterline holes in the hull!!), etc.
Hey Vik, question: what kind of line do line do you have paired with your BG5000? And do you think it could use it exclusively for tarpon and shark fishing so should I go higher? Thank you!
Awesome video, definitely making one of these. Just wondering, do you bring bait home and store them overnight in one of these or is this something you would only use when buying live bait at the store and then taking that bait to the boat for fishing?
Great idea! Not sure if this has been mentioned, but how the hell to do you lug that around with all the other stuff you have to carry?
Ive been a master baiter :D
hahahah the title had me dying 🤣🤣
you could also use the Flow_Rite pump out aerator head instead of a drain plug. It swivels and when you're done pull the head out and the pump will send water through the aerator and out your discharge hose.
Tight Lines.
Have you ever made a tank with a filter? I live a little north of Atlanta GA and the #1 Striper in the world is Lake Sidney Lanier; or as we like to call it, Big Sid. Blue back Herring is the bait of choice and they do no likey dirty water or even lake water. But you HAVE to filter it as their scales come off really easy and they will die on you. The bait tanks at the fishing store I buy bait are north of $500 because they all filters built into them.
I have one of these to hold mullet in the garage for at last over night. It gets hot here in so fl. Any ideas to keep the water temp down? Other than frozen water bottles. It gets old changing them out.
I had also thought about running some flexible hose through a mini fridge with a pump and thermostat.
How do you clean the water ? do you just leave it and empty it once a week or so ? Also do you know if this set up is applicable for saltwater fish ?
Great video man!!
Huge help to the public Victor. Made a few of these over the years. However, could you reply with (or shoot a follow-up video) your recommendations of how to build a transport cart. We see these at larger tackle shops but they want the bank for them. I really like what I've seen on a few glimpses of the one you take from the Juno Pier to the Inlet. Can you tell us about it?
Great idea, how long will fish live in the live well? How often do you need to replace the water?
What is the maximum time you keep different live baits in there. Like what kind of bait versus what type of time
You could also install a ball valve in the clear hose with an outlet hose to drain it. Just a thought.
Could you use this as bait aquarium so to speak? As in growing and reproducing bait
Also is it ok if I used the 5200 to attatch the top end of the pvc to the sprayhead because a hose clamp would not hold kt
Instead of a drain plug, you could also consider adding a three-way valve and use the pump to remove the water. This will allow you to empty it from your boat.
Very well put together!! Im wondering, how do you keep the water from warming up? i used one of those pumps in the past and after a few hours outside my baits died from the hot water. Any recommendations?
Good point, well that's one reason I like having a circulating pump as seen in video opposed to just an aerator it def helps in cooling the water. I live in Florida and I have never really had a problem with baits dying from overheating. However I do like to change the water as often as possible. You could always put an ice pack in for a shirt amoiynt of tinr
use air pumps don`t use water pumps water never warming up and less work
muhammed kajee move to Canada...
What battery do you recommend? I want to make a live well for when I go pier fishing that will last a few hours
awesome!! Any recommendations for spinning reel around $100 for throwing flair hawk's
ant gfisher penn battle
Nice job man!
Keep up the videos they are really helpful. With that setup , Could it hold bait alive over night? Like Greenbacks for an example?
absolutely, if your water is quality and changed right before you store them. Also I wouldn't put in more than 4 dozen small-medium baits. If you go up to a 50 gallon you can store 10 dozen probably.
Landshark Fishing thanks I’m going to give it ago over the Xmas break . I’ll let you know how it goes
What parts did you use for the plug at the bottom for draining?
Could this be made in a way to draw fresh saltwater from a nearby source? Maybe with the addition of a Stand pipe?
Where did you buy the bucket with the screw on lid? I never transport bait because I don't want the salt spilling all over my truck.
Did this about 10 years ago back in high school to keep a bunch of blue gill alive for cat fishing
Nice video brother where can you get the alligator clips
Use the 5200 and install a
hose Bibb in the side at the bottom to let the water out
Lol that 5200 is a bear it'll take gelcoat off a transom of a boat believe me . Great video
Would this keep a dozen speedoes a live for 6 hours ?
Is there a specific reason you had your drill on reverse while drilling the holes instead of forward as you would normally while drilling?
😂
If you used a boat bilge pump you could keep all the plumbing internal and avoid cutting holes in your bucket. Is there a reason why you feel recirculating water is better than an aquarium style air pump?
rubber washers would have worked also and none of the mess or permanent problems if a leak appeared later on,or in case you change something or decide to use these parts in a new tank. you can cut rubber washers out of any rubber mat or buy them. Currently making a Minnow Sell holding tank as Ive noticed all the old local minnow shops have closed down and left a need for a live bait shop,,,good way to supplement social security in my opinion,,guess i will find out. picked up a working small chest freezer for free and i will be adding a coat of gel coat in a blue,,light blue color to help assure all areas are well sealed and maintain a better stress free environment. I plan on using a bucket filter although the smaller version made from a large diameter pvc pipe is also a option that looks good too. Haven't decided on a pump yet due to price differences .
When I grow up, I wanna be a *Master baiter*
Nice buddy, well done 👏
Question; what model battery is that you’re using?
