As a veterinarian, I am so glad you are mentioning pets. It is absolutely heart breaking when pet owners bring their pets to the clinic for a serious condition and cannot afford the appropriate treatment, therefore ending up forcing our hand to euthanase the pet as there is no other humane alternative. Pets do bring a lot of joy in our lives, but they are a massive financial commitment and people should therefore make absolutely sure they can afford them before buying/adopting a dog or cat.
Even excluding dogs, cats, and other "free walking pets", I think most people would be surprised how much "tank pets" cost. I grew up with a lot of fish in my house, but it wasn't until I set up my own tank in college that I realized how much this really cost. Tank, substrate, filter, heater (depends), live plants (optional but highly recommended), cleaning supplies, etc. all add up before you even get the fish themselves, and I just kept low maintenance shrimp/nano fish! I would not be surprised if reptiles, exotic bugs, or birds also have a deceptive price tag to maintain.

Great video, Nate. One thing I would suggest for people going on the road of trying minimalism lifestyle is to also direct & invest & fill what matters for you. I still feel like the key is not to live just for the sake of minimal resources we own. But is to re-direct our energy, space and time to learn, explore, and create. learning to fix stuff is such a good tip! i've saved so much money just doing a quick youtube search to fix things in my car and around my house, it's so much easier than hiring someone or buying a new one.
It blows my mind when people complain about not having money and I hear they have 2 dogs, 3 cats, 1 reptile, 5 fish, etc. When did one pet not become enough, especially for those on a tight budget?
I have a coworker like that. Always complaining that she doesn't make enough money to cover her expenses and should have a raise and whatnot. Meanwhile she has a horse (had 2 until very recently), a dog, three chickens, and a few cats. And she won't work extra hours when they're available.
@@NaeMuckle They started doing that here in Europe because people abused the system as it is shown in the comment above, we got to the point where even young kids would bring big bags just so parents wouldn't pay for it. A person should set his goals as early as he can and devote all his energy and talent to getting there. With enough effort, he may achieve it. Or he may find something that is even more rewarding. But in the end, no matter what the outcome, he will know he has been alive.
I used to pay $350 per month for a storage unit on Long Island, NY. The funny thing is we own our home which has a two car garage, full attic and decent size shed. We wasted money storing the junk we wasted money on. We were also spending $1000 per month on a car payment. When I look back on it, I shake my head on the money I could’ve invested. Lessons learned.
When moving and wanting to get rid of stuff I do 3 things 1. Try and sell it, if not sold... 2. Offering for a small cost or free to friends/family 3. Donate
Agree on all of these, and I'll add one. Similar to growing your own vegetables, herbs are a great thing to grow on your own. Fresh herbs are very expensive to buy at the the grocery store, and even dried herbs are not cheap. If you can grow a few of your own, you can save quite a bit of money. A small thing of dried basil can cost about $5. But I have bought potted basil plants that cost about $6 and grew for a year and a half. They give me delicious fresh basil while they're alive, and all through that time, I also clip some off periodically to either dry or freeze for later. One plant gave me probably two years' worth of basil. Similarly, my rosemary plant that I bought for about $3 when it was a tiny sprig is now a thriving bush about three feet tall, and it could live for about 20 years if it stays healthy. Herbs are great and often not that hard to grow. It's a house plant that you can eat, and it will save you lots of money.
Nate, you don't need a yard to grow veggies and fruit! Really I have been growing papayas, avos and (really small) pineapples inside my apartment. Or even tomatoes, at least it's worth a try haha

Cars are a big one. I think when it comes to buying a car you need to determine where you are in life and where you want to be. It feels great to have a nice car but if it is negatively impacting you financially from reaching your goals then you need to step back and assess the situation. If your goal requires you to save money then you need to think of reliablity and running/repair costs and make those points number 1. I recently sold my bmw and although I miss it very much it was the best decision I have made in some time. The running, maintenance and general cost of buying the car was holding me back from making my goals a reality. Now I am much closer to where I am trying to get. The idea of driving a nice flashy car and avoiding the 'embarrassment' of driving an old beat up vehicle can hold a lot of people back, don't let it be you!
One can grow vegetables inside an apartment like it was grown inside a spaceship in the movie The Martian. btw I'd love to watch you realizing your truck idea thing, this could be fun
Yeah the food delivery point is so true. I did a quick calculation last year and it seems like in 2020, I spent 12k on restaurants and various delivery services. And I didn't even get good food most of the time...
A truck build out is brilliant. I’ve seen some pristine minimalistic homes on wheels. 👌 That’s the dream right there...Such a good way to live freely & budget.
To add more; 1)many credit cards offer extended warrantees of up to a year, even if lost or stollen. 2) Cable TV. Antennas work great. 3) Buy Holliday decorations after the Holliday at half price or less. Great video!
Great tips! Labor costs is a bit more nuanced than the others. Generally speaking, I agree with you. If something needs to be done at your house, try to fix it yourself. However, you have to factor in time, which is a very important resource. Personal example: I used to cut my lawn with a push mower. Took me 2 hours total. I found a company that cuts my lawn for $20. That company cuts it in 10 mins since they have commercial equipment. I make more than $10/hr so I don't think it's worth my time to cut the lawn myself. I noticed in the older generations like my Dad and Grandpa, they take the "do it yourself" mentality to an extreme. e.g. building wood furniture from scratch versus buying it at a store like IKEA.
I bought my pickup new in 2004, ordered it with no electric options, no A/C, and a standard trans. Was 0% interest, and my down payment was with a GM points visa card. It earned me a living gardening until about 5 years ago. Was $30,000 new and I wrote it all off as business expenses, and I was recently offered $8,000 for it. :) BTW when you buy new you know what you have- in 330,000 km I have replaced brakes once, clutch never, a couple batteries, tie rod ends, and a few lights.
Your reaction to you watching your own videos in, say 5, 10, 20 years would be interesting. I'm 50, ideas on life change sooo much in those years. I enjoy the videos, they help me reminisce.

On pets, please please *please* don't get a goldfish if you're new to fish or don't have the space/money. Those things can grow to a foot long and generate a lot of waste for their size, which means more time on your part to change water and more of an initial investment on a large tank + stand. Instead, I'd recommend starting with smaller fish like guppies or other livebearers (if you want a lot of babies), neon tetras, rasboras etc. Nano shrimp or snails also can work if you're into inverts. You can keep a smaller tank while having a good number of things swimming around, and in the case of shrimp you can easily sell extras for a couple bucks a pop (you will get dozens if not hundreds very fast if you do things correctly and they don't produce much waste.)
We did the no seasonal decor for 10 years. But our family grew and kids started to understand what each holiday meant. So we decided to invest in some seasonal decor. The good thing that you can easily make them and don't have to break the budget. But we definitely need to be careful cuz' those things pile up FAST!

I still feel like the key is not to live just for the sake of minimal resources we own. But is to re-direct our energy, space and time to learn, explore, and create. At the end of day, you are your hero for your choices.
learning to fix stuff is such a good tip! i've saved so much money just doing a quick youtube search to fix things in my car and around my house, it's so much easier than hiring someone or buying a new one.
Notes:
-phone insurance
-vegetables
-flight baggage (*carry backpack)
-pets
-expensive sunglasses
-seasonal decorations
-new cars (*used)
-labor cost
Plus: Storage Units, Food Delivery
Show us the camper conversion! I’m interested in doing this myself, so a detailed series would be nice (cost, how-to, etc)
It blows my mind when people complain about not having money and I hear they have 2 dogs, 3 cats, 1 reptile, 5 fish, etc. When did one pet not become enough, especially for those on a tight budget?
" I don't have much money"
Eats takeaway multiple times a week
Smokes
Drinks
Unhealthy Snacks all the time
Partying
Well they have money, just not enough.
I have a coworker like that. Always complaining that she doesn't make enough money to cover her expenses and should have a raise and whatnot. Meanwhile she has a horse (had 2 until very recently), a dog, three chickens, and a few cats. And she won't work extra hours when they're available.
i stay using a huge ass backpack as a personal item on the buget airlines - never willl i ever pay for a checked bag
Don't travel on European budget airlines then. They have a frame at checkin you need to fit you bag into and if it doesn't fit you have to pay extra.
@@NaeMuckle i got played one time and had to pay 50 dollars extra for a bag
@@NaeMuckle They started doing that here in Europe because people abused the system as it is shown in the comment above, we got to the point where even young kids would bring big bags just so parents wouldn't pay for it. I get it, but it's stupid, it is a benefit to people that just bring little stuff to travel, but being exploited by people who bring their entire closet for trips. Also, they were lettings us do it because bags are weight and more weight means more fuel. Just bring what you need and not your entire closet in your bag for a 1-week trip.
They even allow you to have a personal bag and a normal suitcase without costs. If you go over it, you should pay.
@@NaeMuckle when that happens i usually just put on like 5 shirts at once and all my outwear and i always get by - but thats in usa havent done that yet in europe
😌I'm 35 and everything you're saying is dead on correct. NEVER apologize for giving smart intelligent advice because you're 22!
1- phone insurance
2-grow your own vegetables
3-flight baggage fees
4-pets u cant afford
5-storage units
6-expensive sunglasses
7-seasonal decorations
8-new cars
9-labor costs
10-food delivery
thank me later
A person should set his goals as early as he can and devote all his energy and talent to getting there. With enough effort, he may achieve it. Or he may find something that is even more rewarding. But in the end, no matter what the outcome, he will know he has been alive.
Well said
I am 71, when I travel I take a carry-on and a tote bag. So does my husband. Never take more than you can carry. Tina
''We wasted money storing the junk we wasted money on'' hahahaha oh my god
Sell the crap and be DONE
When moving and wanting to get rid of stuff I do 3 things
1. Try and sell it, if not sold...
2. Offering for a small cost or free to friends/family
3. Donate
Great tip.
do you mind adding timestamps for easier navigation
Totally agred
Its 15minutes. Just watch it. Not like u have to take notes :)
Nobody seems to have noticed, but Nate upgraded his camera. I am able to watch his videos in 4K resolution now 😎 I’m so proud of you for reaching a million subscribers!
The less you spend, the more you have to invest in yourself.
it depends on where you spend
I’m Russian who live in Philly. I think you is not typical American. Americans like to spend money on things which they don’t need.
Thank you for video!
I never eat fast food at home or dine in. No uber eats for me. No take out. I meal prep at home. Take lunches to work. I'm shocked to know that Nate used delivery services for food after watching all his previous videos.
Nate: seasonal decorations are a waste of money
My wife: ready to throw hands with all her hobby lobby decorations
I'm looking forward to the van video. Very curious what you will do with it. thanks for your advices mate!
Same!!
All these things seems important but when you look at them a lil more closely, i feel you Don't necessarily need them . A very informative video indeed . ❤️
I'm so impressed by your attitude. when I was your age used to daydreaming about spending money never thought about savings. Thank you for all your ideas.
You have a really nice name🔥
Exactly, same
Very true, vege gardens are a great money saver but I always make sure to have some frozen veges in the freezer as well for the times it's raining all day and I don't want to go out and dig stuff out
Oh boy, I fail on some of these, but don't spend on some of them. Having someone clean my house is totally worth it to me. Great video Nate, and I love that it's items that are not on most videos.
Smiles
Nate, hear me out. Dollar Tree sells great aviator sunglasses for a dollar, and it comes with UV protection.
I’ll be getting my driver’s license soon and when my friends/family ask me what type of car I want I always say one that doesn’t depreciate in value! Not the answer that they expect😅 (but I’m committed to it)!
Good lucks on getting your driver's license!!
@@chillinwithluis thank you!
13:54 Food Delivery, What really gets to me is when food delivery apps give me a coupon but then it'll say delivery only. After fees, delivery cost, etc I'm basically getting little to no discount.
I definitely want to see the truck and camper project
Me too
Congrats on 1M subs! Let’s see the minimalist truck camper!
Here is me with a horse and a cat 😂 I include their costs into my daily expenses budget. They’re high cost yes, but bring me a lot of joy
one cat and one dog owner here!
My balcony it's tiny but I made a vertical garden there for strawberry, cherry tomatoes, lettuce, rucula, mint and other small plants. Works great except of course in autumn and winter.
Thank you for mentioning pets 👏
I work in the veterinary industry and too many people do exactly what you've said and we don't enjoy seeing people heart broken when they can't afford to care for a pet properly or afford a sudden vet bill! BUDGET FOR YOU FUR BABIES TOO ❤️
Cars are a big one.
"vegetables" lol
@@mojomike well it was basically potatoes in the film
Im already getting tomatoes. It's april. Crazy.
I totally want to see the truck and watch the build process that’s awesome !!
Yeah the food delivery point is so true. I did a quick calculation last year and it seems like in 2020, I spent 12k on restaurants and various delivery services. And I didn't even get good food most of the time...
I can relate
I actually got both food and delivery....no wonder I put on weight 🤣
You are very wise for one so young. Great great advice 👍👍👍
I definitely want to see what you are doing with your truck!! I've always wanted to do the same.
i wanna do it too someday
A truck build out is brilliant. I’ve seen some pristine minimalistic homes on wheels. 👌 That’s the dream right there...Such a good way to live freely & budget.
Yes let’s do a video about your truck . Exciting news
"I just can`t have nice things, I break them" - can totally relate to that
I would love to see the van/truck transformation!
To add more; 1)many credit cards offer extended warrantees of up to a year, even if lost or stollen. 2) Cable TV. Antennas work great. 3) Buy Holliday decorations after the Holliday at half price or less.
Great video!
I can't wait to see Nate doing van life :D
Me too
Love the sunglasses and white clothes bit haha. Me too!
My partner got me Raybans and I live in constant fear that I am going to break or lose them 🤣
I bought my pickup new in 2004, ordered it with no electric options, no A/C, and a standard trans.
Make the truck video!!! Would love to see it.
Thinking about getting a truck just for long term usage and to use it for road trips!
Your reaction to you watching your own videos in, say 5, 10, 20 years would be interesting. I'm 50, ideas on life change sooo much in those years. I enjoy the videos, they help me reminisce.
Road trip videos sound dope man!
Yes to camper:-) Thank you for your helpful information sharing x
Nate growing that beard 🔥
Saving money on razor blades

Like a gofundme project called 'Close shave for billions'.....guess what the premise is.
Nate, it's nice to see you a little more personal and animated. Loved you on Graham Stephan and Jack's show! Be sure to continue this trend. We all want to know more about you, though we know you're close to the vest on certain subjects. Maybe talk more about non- financial goals such as marriage, family, what you're retirement dreams are, etc. Try a Q&A...you can always pass on what's too uncomfortable or personal. Thanks for all you do and especially your enthusiasm!!! Live well and stay safe! Oh, and what's your workout/food routine?
Would love to see the van build!

So that beard really is coming! Way to go brother, it looks great already, let it grow and let it flow
can i get one too?😂
Nice video! We stored stuff in an old barn for a time instead of storage.
Me watching this video for when i'll have a budget
Lol
😅
The budget can start now, it’s truly up to you
😂😂😂 i thought I was the only one
We did the no seasonal decor for 10 years. But our family grew and kids started to understand what each holiday meant. So we decided to invest in some seasonal decor. The good thing that you can easily make them and don't have to break the budget. But we definitely need to be careful cuz' those things pile up FAST!
Gardens can save an immense amount of money on food!!
Ways to save money
-Cellphone insurance
-vegetables grow them
-baggage fees carry less while flying
-pets
-storage units rather sell them
-expensive sunglasses
-seasonal decorations
-new cars buy it ona depriciation curve wichich is like after 3 year best price
-labour costs rather do it your self
-delivery apps
Nice video Nate, keep it up!
There's this beautiful thing called a Church Family. Babysitting, petsitting, painting, plumbing, roofing, yardwork, vehicle maintenance, and even music and language tutoring.
Not everyone is religious, but even for those of us who are, you unfortunately don't always have a large or supportive church network. It is definitely a tremendous boon when you do have a good one.
@@thatjillgirl definitely a tremendous gift.
We want to see the truck build!!!!
Nate, I would love to see your truck build out. I built out a cargo van (bought used) a couple of years ago and already have some fun memories with it.
Would love to see some budget overlanding videos in the future
Yeass
So glad these work so very well for you!!! Many of these just don't and won't work for others, but glad they work for you. A lot of people don't even think about any restraint or budgets - such as constantly buying newest shoe styles, newest tech devices, etc. Do what works for you and it's always good to be mindful of spending habits and responsibilities that come with purchases (pets)...
Agree
Did you also cut your razor from your budget Nate? ;)
😂😂😂
as for the garden... I mean we always talk about how saving time is important because you could do other things ( I mean you got a smart vacuum to save 20 min cleaning). wouldn't growing a garden take way more time?
