- A recent build of a M.O.T.E inspired surfboard 7'2" x 21" x 3" for friend and fellow surfboard shaper Tom.
Taking you from the initial custom template through to the final wet sand.
I've often thought I'd like to try shaping boards... until now. You're an artist and a tradesman. Even if I could do it, the stress would kill me. It's a beautiful board. Well done.

Your talents are very impressive. I’m hoping to build a board if I can get my hands on some of that Artic bio foam 🙏❤️much respect and love from Japan

I watch shaping videos as much as I watch surfing it self. It’s so relaxing watching someone shape one. I’m from West Michigan we have a growing surf community. My Dads buddy use to shape out of his backyard in our area.

Never had an interest in surfing, even though it's one of the coolest things we've come up with as a species. I was always really shocked by the prices of the boards though! Now I get it, great work and cheers from Greece!

Awesome board and another great video. It looks like you didn’t tape off the rails when hot coating the deck. It makes sense and I haven’t seen it before, but I’m going to try that out. Also, is that a standard pad on that orbital sander. I haven’t been able to find a medium or softer pad. The one I have is pretty firm, it works great on fin boxes but I’d prefer to have on that is a bit softer/more forgiving to sand the flats. But I can see the benefit over using a regular sander/polisher. Anyway, awesome content. I use your technique of setting the fin boxes after laminating with tint as opposed to before the lam. I’ve been very happy with how much better it comes out.

Thanks mate. Yeh for the initial fill coat I don’t tape and let it drip, then I push it around the rails and onto the lap. Then when it’s dry you can easily sand you bottom laps flush in prep from the bottom fill coat. Makes it so much easier and less tape used.
I use just the standard pad mirka sent me. It’s pretty firm/hard. For your initial sand you want to try hit the flats with a hardish pad to get them nice and flat. Then change to a medium/soft on a higher grit.

Great job! Is that just one layer over the fin boxes, 4 or 6 oz? I usually do footballs and have two layers but that’s on a clear lam.
I hate these newer Futures boxes with the holes in the flange. Bubble city lol, makes me nuts, especially under two layers.
I’ve been using One Shot Lettering enamel for my pin lines, you should check it out. I do it right over the sanded/polished hot coat, looks and feels like resin pins. Super durable and easy to use.

Hey Shred, Quick question / suggestion. I noticed that you're having to piece together multiple pieces of 8X11 paper when you make your templates. They make a plotter/printer that will print out your design using a continuous piece of paper. they're typically used for construction plans, but they're adaptable to just about anything. We used to use them when we were planning combat operations. Anyway, you can get them used for a decent price. They'll connect with whatever Windows/IOS system you're using. Might make life easier. Like I said, just a suggestion.

Hey great video. Just to recap, u sanded, laminated bottom with a tint, sanded top, laminated top with clear and then hot coated it, sanded bottom and installed fins, then hot coat the bottom, sanded everything, then did a final hot coat for entire board before final clean up? just trying to follow the steps for the board i am shaping at home!

Shrednaught, awesome video! As usual my friend! I am in the process of building a similar shaped board but shorter and thinner..more of a step-up/big volume shortboard....I see that you used some single concave action, wondering what your thoughts are on slight vee/roll in the nose to single concave in the. middle to double under back foot? I know it sounds overly complex, but I love concaves but also want that ability to get into critical drops on steep waves...if that makes any sense....
Yeh that makes sense. A lot of big wave boards will utilise V in the nose to mitigate the choppy water and almost push through like a boat. Sometimes too much concave on big wave boards can catch air beneath them. So I guess what im saying is sometimes less is more. 👌
Love your videos and your boards. Couple of questions. What foam are you using and what grit sandpapers do you use on the gloss coating?
In this video PU and it depends on the finish wanted. For matte I’ll go 320-400 for polish 2000 and then on to polish

Awesome board man. Do you ever get burn-through's when sanding the hot coat? Curious to see if there's any particular grit you sand with from the start to avoid them. cheers!

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t hit weave from time to time.. as anybody that’s sanded surf boards would as well.
With my sanding I start at 80 and work up BUT I am using mirka pads so if it was just normal sand paper I’d start at 120 and if it was a good fill coat 180
Burn Throughs happen all the time. They are easily fixed by another coat of resin until the whole board is flat and sealed

From memory yes.
Love watching this. How many hours to shape mate, then glass to finish. If you were doing this for a client.
Probably around 4 hours to shape. Not sure how long for glassing as it’s such a staggered process. But a few days at least

Thanks mate. This was a twin but the owner decided to place a trailer box in as well. In case he wanted to play with a Centre fin when it got bigger. The centre box isn’t a usual thruster configuration but placed further towards the tail to accommodate the tiny little trailer fins you get with the upright keel set ups.
Greetings man! Thank you for the excellent video man! It has been some time now that I have followed some of your work as I am actually trying to build my own stuff. I am actuallu at the moment building one very similar to this one, and I have a question in I may. I have seen the installtion of future fins, and some people do it before lamination (in the foam) but here you do it after lamination and then you laminate again with the tail pad. Is there any specific reason why you do it? Thank you!
Yeh mate, I do this because of the tint. If it’s a clear I’ll install in the foam but with tints it looks cleaner this way. If you don’t see any air bubbles through the tint and then sand them open it just looks messy. Both ways work and there is pros and cons to both. Just do whatever works better for your situation 🤙

What marker do you use? Ive used acrylic and alcohol base. Alcohol was a disaster and acrylic started to bleed a little as well..
I use posca pens. Always on top of the fill / hot coat. Then a sealer over that 🤙

Question: Isn’t there a lot of error in a template thats in so many pieces? Why doesnt it come in a strip? BTW the board looks nice.

The template pieces have two sections to line up on and then if you get it all correct it should line up on the stringer line top and bottom. You do need to get it perfect though..
unfortunately a home printer can’t print a strip. You could get it printed from a professional print shop as a strip but that’s more expensive and as it’s a one off I can’t justify it.
You always cut the fin boxes after the first layer of glass? I hate cutting straight on the foam, think I’m gonna start using your tail patch method also, looks clean! You using “football” patches over fin boxes under tail patch layer?
I do it whenever I’ve done a colour tint. It makes the boxes look cleaner and much easier to do although it does add a step to the glassing process. Yeh mate I’ll do a 4oz football then a tail patch of 4 oz over top

Sick board and I bet it took a while to make that little fin key haha. Question for ya, after sanding your lams what do you clean the board with before hot coating? Just a tape pull and air compressor?
Thanks. The fin keys i make with moulds and left over resin.
Yeh I just use compressed air and tape. Just make sure if using air that it’s oil less so it doesn’t spit it all over the board.

How is putting the pieces of paper together ? I printed them years ago I think 2007 and I didn’t have the patience to put them together I think now I’d be a lot better at it. I followed you on Instagram yeah I’m gonna go print out some templates and see how it works out.
It can be tedious that’s for sure…The programs now have some fairly easy lines to get the A4 sheets to match up so it might be a heap easy than 14 years ago.

Do you ever put a bit of filler coat resin on the rail laps (deck side) when you do a tint? (For easier sanding). Is the roller method sufficient to lower the cut lap to avoid air bubbles? I only ask, because you do it to the bottom lap.
Generally no. If you get the roller on a clean cut lap before it gets full cured it works perfect. Only sanding is at the nose and tail and I just hit them with some 80grit. Sometimes you’ll see me run the sander along the lap line even though I did the roller but I’m generally just being pedantic there 🤷♂️

You can start with 40 to rough out then work up . 80-120-180 finish

Futures. You can purchase directly from them
Is that a random orbit sander you're using that's connected to the vacuum line? I thought you weren't supposed to use random orbit during sanding.
Yeh mate, it’s a mirka deros 5 which isn’t a standard orbital. Generally it is faster to use a sander / polisher as the have more grunt but they don’t have a way to extract dust and I don’t have a dedicated sanding room.
I definitely recommend the mirka. Check them out online. 🤙

Cus I bought futures fin boxes and some are not original I guess and I don't know if I should use them or not.

The side futures fins have the F on them and the centre boxes always has the X
I guess it’s just so you can tell they’re different depths and you don’t install the wrong box in the wrong location.

Thanks mate. I’m Australian so here I charge about 800-850 so I guess in USD that would be around 650 mark. 🤙
What’s the reason behind the first deck layer only going 3/4 of the way up and the v shape cut?
Generally you wouldn’t stand on the nose section of the deck so the extra glass isn’t needed in that space. The V cut spreads the stress load out hopefully creating a stronger build and less breakage as it’s not a straight line to snap at.
Just curious how many total hours from start to finish. Classic lines with a classic V.
Hard one to answer mate. There’s a few hours in between resin hardening but at a guesstimate around a 5-6 days 🤙

What was the little black roller for when you used on the edge of the first layer?
It’s a firm rubber roller. When doing a cutlap I use it to push the laps ridge line down into the foam. Makes it flush with the foam and prevents air getting trapped there with the deck layers
Hey mate, can I ask why the angle with planning? I usually just plane straight but recognise most plane on the angle?
Planing on the angle stops the front shoe front falling into the grooves from the last cut. Keeps things level

Yes you can. But make sure you only do it after the fill / hot coat and not on the laminate stage. Seal it after with a clear acrylic sealer to protect it

That’s just a simple scribe tool. You can buy them from a hardware store. They have the measurements and then a little spike to scratch then width with

Yup I use that for rails. I just do a light scratch and then the scratch mark sands out when you blend the board

How many hrs go into making 1 board?
Kinda depends on the board and finish but about 4 hours shaping and then about 3 days through the glassing process. That’s a quick one too. All focus only on the one board
On eps foam is it better to use microplane blade on the surform?
It definitely tears less. You can also use 40 Grit

Dear Shred, very simple but evolved method. Sorry, I am stealing some of your ideas. Sometimes the right tool is key (bent razor blade). You ever come by Hawaii, we have extra room and a shaping/glassing bay in the garage for our personal boards. Aloha.

I do place a line on the foam but I use a light scratch rather than pencil or pen line. I find it easier to hide. I don’t think it shows up very well on the videos though.

I use a scribe from Stanley tools. You can make your own from foam scraps but honestly for a few bucks you can’t go wrong with a bought one.

Hey mate what size router bit are you using for your leash plug?
From memory I think it’s 27mm. But leash plugs do change size so best bet is to just measure the plugs you’re gunna use and get a router bit slightly larger than that.
