We kids were sent to find berries for pie.We did kids divided them up, 1/4 for us, 1/2 for my grandma & 1/4 for the cow. My big brothers would lift me up to reach to give the cow her treat. She was very sweet & game. I remember how soft she was & she was so gentle taking berries from my hand. How common would double sole be compared to say keratin fingers? We work with beef cattle and their nowhere near as fragile as cows so we never see the likes of this much. I recently experienced my first case of keratin fingers and that was the first time my father saw a case of it after 40 years in agriculture. Luckily it was a friesian-hereford x that had it so temperment wasn't much of an issue. I can't remember the last time I saw double dole aswell.

    • @averyl5969

      Short answer: Yes
Long answer: Through my (admittedly, non-professional) research, I've found that cows try to heal their own hoof issues by generating a whole new sole. This often works for issues that do not have digital dermatitis and you'll find that sometimes Graeme finds problems that have "solved themselves". However, in the case that digital dermatitis is present, more than one new sole can form due to each layer trying to get rid of the problem. This makes the problem worse because digital dermatitis is anaerobic, meaning it thrives in the absence of air, and the layers give the dermatitis more space to grow in its ideal environment. That's why people who tend to cows' hooves are so important and that's also why you see them using salicylic acid and iodine wraps-both of these things are very adept at eliminating digital dermatitis.

Poor baby, and great Graham. Your team is amazing. We are from So. Maine, USA. I really like cows and the work you all do. I am too girlie, even at 71, and don't like the muck, but I'm very glad you ❤ the ladies. I also am of Scottish descent on my GGrandmother's side. She and her sister immigrated to Quebec, CA, in late 1700 and married twin brothers who were also Scotish and farmers. I got to go to one of the farms as a child and got to see lots of cows and was introduced to my first sow ever. I was also shocked to learn that Mom, something can crush her babies. I was horrified and still think of it today. I don't believe a trip to Scotland is possible, but enjo6 your travels and theme songs. You're a teaser just as my uncles were, and I was the one they teased. I was always an easy target. I also have Multiple Sclerosis. I have had for over 43 years but stilled blessed. I have to use an electric chair, but still walk a bit. Thanks for all you do for the cows.❣️🦋❣️🙏🐄🐄🐄🥰

Perhaps that comment will go unnoticed but I always had a question: when you cure a cow with digital dermatisis (sorry if I misspelled it), the fact it’s a virus/bacteria isn’t going to contaminate your scalp? When you’ll trim a cow after with that same scalp, isn’t it going to infect her? English isn’t my main language, sorry if vocabulary isn’t extremely accurate, but I always wondered watching your videos. I love them btw ❤

As you struggled with the dry, hard horn, I had a vision of a cow spa foot soak, with epsom salts and aromatherapy--maybe a nice leg massage too--a choice of colour for the blocks, and some nail art. Just think...a whole new level of hoof care! 😆💅😆

Hello my friend. I absolutely love your channel. You really do amaze me with your knowledge and love for these animals. I live in Virginia so it makes it impossible for me to get to meet you. 😭 Please know that because of you I now know a little bit about cows feet and I love it. ❤️ I don't know if you ever donate any of your murch or not. I would have one of EVERYTHING if I could afford it lol. I'm on disability and a fixed income so I just don't have the money to support you. I look forward to many more of your videos. P.S. I love how your new smile looks. 😁 Thank you for reading my message it means a lot. ❤️

For some odd reason I've become a huge fan (great grandma, only ever been around goats, chickens and rabbits). After watching for several months I have an idea.... You can take it to your buddies who's joy in life is making cattle comfortable...... Wellies For Cows. They could be acid green like your glue
    What do ya think (😂)

Hey Mr. Hoof GP, I have a question that's not solely (hah!) about cows: I work with my hands too, and my two biggest hobbies require the use of my hands/wrists/forearms, ie: whittling. I find that my hands these days, as I'm nearing 40, hurt a lot longer and there's not a whole lot of relief, even if I take breaks. How do you maintain comfort of your forearms and hands?

*Does a wonderful job cleaning and grooming the area.
*Never offers comfort or a gentle pat of reassurance ☹
*Cow steps off and proceeds to walk through six inches of piss and shit 😕

That was pretty gnarly & feel so bad for the cow. NOT criticizing the farms you go to but it seems like common sense to me (having spent a few summers on a farm) that the barns would have a nearby running water source where you could wash off all the foo foo & gunk & much more quickly/easily trim the cows hooves. There was running water at the barn because the cows teats needed to be cleaned & the milk separated. Of course that was 60+ yrs ago…🥴👍♥

Really interesting example of double sole. Would be fascinating to revisit this one with close ups to show exactly what makes it a “double” sole, and how you saw that right away. Thank you for all Team HGP does!

Why do I watch these videos? I mean, I don’t trim cows feet, I’ve never trimmed them, and I have no desire to. Still, I watch every GP video. 🤷🏼‍♂️…It relaxes me for some reason.

Most people that know me always wonder why I watch these videos. I don't have any cattle, I'm not even a farmer. I'm just someone that likes to see people taking care of animals. Also, if I ever get to a point where I have (or know someone that has) animals like these, I will have an idea of how to care for them! It's my way of trying to understand different aspects of the world around me, I guess.
with that in mind, can someone explain to me what a double sole is? What does it mean for a cow to have a double soul? I understand that is bad... but why? I mean, how does a double sole cause problems for a cow?
