To be fair, Bearing in mind that they rank the iPad as a laptop replacement, it’s almost criminal that they don’t put the function keys on the Apple keyboard

I understand that it can suck, but to be honest it’s not something that I really see as a deal breaker. Don’t get me wrong, it would be nice if they were there, but I’ve learned to live without them.

Deal breaker for me is that after few years of magic keyboard , they couldn’t even try to make a thin case compatible with magic keyboard. I don’t want a 1000-2000$ ipad pro totally naked. Don’t ever mention some crap third party case like pitaka or switcheasy with cheap plastic quality

    • @shadowios7033
      @shadowios7033 3 года назад +8

@@mikelo9006 I know what you’re saying! That’s why I just got a Smart Keyboard case off Amazon (only $20), cut it in half, and stuck it in the front of my iPad carrying case to I can magnetically snap it onto the back of my iPad when I’m gaming handheld (I have large hands so the 12.9” isn’t too unwieldy for me), or writing on desk. Otherwise, I got a Dbrand skin for it, so it won’t scratch. The Magic Keyboard Case also has sheet metal in it, so that is the primary source of protection for the iPad.

One thought on the „go-anywhere“ aspect. I think that really depends on your type of workflow, because as someone who uses the Pencil a lot, having to completely remove the iPad from the case to write on it and leaving it without protection is a real no-go for me, especially on trains or public transport. That thing is way to expensive for me to risk that.

    1) Spreadsheet - Copy pasting data between opened sheets, between Google Sheets and Excel. Running desktop class formulas.

I went for the magic keyboard instantly. I hated the lack of different screen angles the most. That just irritated me to no end, especially for a $350 purchase. So I starting looking at keyboard comparisons, including yours. I'm back to say that the combo touch was the one for me.
The screen angles you can have is superior. The function keys are great. The typing experience is on par with the magic keyboard. I like that it is still protected when not attached to the keyboard. Though the material is not AS premium as the magic keyboard, I don't have to worry about smudges at all. And should I need to attach devices, I have a couple of thunderbold docks I have around the house with power delivery, So I'm good.

i've had the combo touch for 8 months now, the sides with the holes are now loosened and disfigured.
the case also traps heat big time, don't believe me? Compare using the ipad playing games with the case vs without the case. i have heard lithium ion battery don't like extreme temperatures, there goes your battery life span. The keyboard randomly does not work, you know what i mean if you have this product, imagine doing a powerpoint presentation in front of class and the case malfunctioned, how's that for a premium case.
everytime i play, i remove the ipad from the case, i'll rather buy the magic keyboard, believe me, this is a case you'll regret
The case is heavy, when you play with it while carrying it. it will put pressure on your wrist. notice it? do it for a year. prepare for De Quervain Tenosynovitis. you have been warned

  • @howardeastin1474

So when trying to decide between the combo touch and the Magic Keyboard, this was one of the videos I watched when trying to decide. I bought both keyboards, just because of how hard it was to make a decision.
I work in field sales and my iPad Pro 12.9 M2 is my work computer. Deciding on using an iPad Pro as my work computer was another decision process that resulted in trying and taking back both Chromebooks and PC’s. What I was really wanting was an asset that provides an awesome user experience but is also a productivity warrior. The iPad Pro 12.9 in end won the debate, as well as the Apple Magic Keyboard.
The Apple Magic Keyboard won with me because of the typing experience and trackpad. The TrackPad is not the biggest but it is very accurate and just works every time. I had found that when I was using the Combo touch, the TrackPad would out of the blue make random key presses and not follow my gestures. The typing was great, but the overall case for me added to much bulk and added to much weight to the device that when you work in field sales weight matters.
Using the AMK, I do wish there was function row, because on the 12.9 version of the AMK there is enough room for a function row. Great video as always and thanks for your insight.
    An Edit to this comment:
I agree that the Combo Touch is not an all terrain keyboard case option for the iPad. When trying to use the Combo Touch in the lap, it just was not convenient due to the kickstand and length of the keyboard. However I did find that when using the Combo Touch while my legs were stretched out across an ottoman or propped up on the coffee table the Combo Touch was a delight to use with the iPad 12.9. I also did not realize how much I rely on the function row during my work flows. The convenience of the home button and media keys work great when going back and forth between apps. The Trackpad is not as precise as the one on the Magic Keybaord but the Combo Touch is bigger. I do use the Magic Mouse more when working for longer periods of time on the iPad because of the gesture compatibility. Between using the Combo Touch and Magic Keyboard it is more comfortable using the Combo Touch as the keyboard is slightly spaced out better. Lastly, I like the fact that when you are not needing the keyboard you can detach the iPad from the Keyboard and the iPad is still protected; which when paired with the Paper-like screen protector offers the best protection for using the iPad while on the go.

And I’m returning it to buy a white Magic Keyboard. It happens multiple times a day, the cursor would suddenly move from one random place to another, or can’t tell if I’m pressing down or not (not sure if it’s because i enabled ‘’ tap to click’’). Great review. I tried both for several days too. Magic Keyboard won because of lap stability and lighter weight. Kick stand on Logitech just felt wonky to me and using it on your lap is not doable in IMO with the 12.9”.. LCT is really heavy. Function keys not a deal breaker since I mostly use volume control and occasional screen brightness; easier to adjust from on-screen control panel for me. Protection is enough with MKB since I mostly use at home at table or desk or In my lap.. I like screen closer since I use pad gestures at lot. There is a subtle but better typing and trackpad experience on MKB. There was a slight muffling of sound too with LCT with more bass, but some might like it. I liked the texture of the LCT.and hand rest slightly better on LGT too but doesn’t seem to bother me since MKB is so thin. I also like the white MKB because I can see it better in all light. Taking the keyboard off and on was just awkward and when carrying LCT keyboard open did come off on me. MKB easier to open. Smaller footprint on MKB is convenient too. As an easel I just like I-Pad flat better and the LGT just did not seem stable enough. Some have said flip the MKB to use as easel but this is not stable either. The charging USB-c on left side fits where my charger is and less stress on cable and port when flat rather than hanging.
In the end LCT is better protection if you need it, but that and the function keys are the only reason to buy, except the price difference. Apple once again has a solid here folks.

I have the iPad Air 4 with the Logitech Folio Touch. Price was one consideration. Another was the protection it offers. I take my iPad with me to many places I go. I don‘t always have control of where the iPad is placed in vehicles.
I use the iPad Air in place of a traditional computer. I use the keyboard a lot. I find the typing experience to be miles ahead of Bluetooth keyboards I have used in the past. I find the gestures to work well. I generally hate trackpads on computers, but I enjoy this trackpad.
I don‘t mind the lack of the charging port. I use headphones most of the time, and I also use an iPad Air 3, so I am used to dongles. I use both iPads at the same time when I am doing certain tasks, such as video conferencing. I can use one for the video and have the other dedicated to chatting or using Office apps for my workflow during the calls.
I also like the many viewing angles the keyboard supports. I do wish the Air 4 keyboard was detachable like that iPad Pro version.

The lit Magic keyboard solves some of my keyboard stroke misses. Showing how easily it is to take off the iPad from the Magic keyboard to use the Pencil is a game changer. I’ve used both iPad Pro sizes for years and if you’re buying accessories I’d say consider this:
You can just use a Bluetooth keyboard that has a trackpad to do the same thing these do.
While a case adds bulk, a bumper case protects the sides which are very vulnerable. I use this plus a sleeve when it’s not in use.
It’s so uncomfortable to use a laptop or iPad+keyboard flat on a desk compared to elevating the screen on a portable stand.
That’s why I use a a keyboard and a stand with both my iPad 12.9 and my MacBook Air, and when I just want to do something quickly… typing on the screen feels perfectly natural.
The coolest feature I see in these cases is the Logitech’s kickstand. I might buy the origami stand to get that feature.

One thing to be considered: I would love to get the Combo Touch, as the extra protection and the ability to separate the keyboard are really nice, but the length of the keyboard + the kickstand make it too big to be used on small lecture hall tables in university, while the magic keyboard's floaty design reduce the iPad's footprint
Edit: I kept watching and I'm glad you mentioned it

I just bought an 11 inch iPad Pro and the combo touch. I felt like if I wanted to use the pencil with the magic keyboard, I would have to take it off every time and the iPad was unprotected. Another perk is it amplifies speaker volume. Its speaker holes focus the sound that is concentrated in the plastic sills that creates a nice stereophonic speaker effect that echoes & amplifies music and media really well. Another side perk is the keyboard cover I’ve for Magic Keyboard works for combo touch too; it just doesn’t cover the function row but 90% transferability ain’t bad at all.

99.9% of the time if you are plugging a Thunderbolt 4 cable to your iPad Pro it will have some form of charging capability be it a monitor or docking station so passive charging really has no point honestly. It would be cool if that passive port had Thunderbolt capabilities but $350 for a keyboard is just dumb to me. $230 for a keyboard/detachable case combo and legit shortcut keys on the keyboard (you know, the whole point of having a keyboard in the first place) makes sense. If the Magic Keyboard was $100 less to the price it should be and included shortcut keys, it would be a tougher choice but I just do not trust a levitating magnet to hold my $1000+ tablet. Logitech seems to have protection of investment in mind more so than Apple (what a shock).

I have had the Logitech Combo keyboard for a little over an hr right now. Before buying the accessory, I tried out the keyboard in store. While the keyboard clicks are a little bit more satisfying on the Magic Keyboard, the typing experience on the combo touch is no slouch. The keyboard presses are very accurate but I do notice the slight lag or inconsistency in the trackpad compared to the Magic Keyboard. The added real estate of the TracPad on the combo touch is nice, but still prefer the trackpad on the Magic Keyboard.
What else I like about the combo touch is the fact that I can detach the keyboard from the case and use it as a stand or in tablet mode to sketch out notes or just as a tablet without having to detach the iPad Itself and leave the iPad with no protection. What else I like is the function row, but what you don’t have are the do not disturb, screen mirroring, or camera shortcut. The shortcut key is nice, but you have that already as a keyboard shortcut.
Like Chris mentions, it really depends on your likes and it also depends on if you are wanting to save a few bucks. For me, I have both keyboards at this moment. I have my old Magic Keyboard case which is still compatible with the new M1 11 inch iPad Pro, but I wanted something with a little bit more protection because I have three year old son; which is why I wanted to try out the combo keyboard. So far I am not disappointed but not sure on if I am keeping it due to price. I have a month to decide so we will see. Great video as always.
So a little re-edit. I have decided to take back my Combo keyboard. What led me to this decision, is the typing experience is just better on the Magic Keyboard. Also, like Chris mentioned, the Magic Keyboard just provides a more immersive experience on the iPad. What I also decided about my decision is that you can just tell that the Magic keyboard was just meant to be used on the iPad and nothing else. Just the fluidity between the gestures of the tracPad and the typing experience just nothing else compares.

I will say that from all the reviews I've seen I had settled on returning my magic keyboard (which is still en route) to get a logitech combo touch. I'm glad I watched this review, I can't see myself compromising "laptop" usage on my lap with the combo touch AND not having a secondary charging option in the case I need to plug into a usb using the lightning port. I do hate that the magic keyboard does not have function keys and has a smaller trackpad area. I feel more comfortable when my wrist is resting on the keyboard area. I won't know for sure until I test it out when it arrives. Thank you for the candid review!

They’re both great And one could certainly discuss the price. What is far more important, as somebody below said, Is your personal need and your workflow. For example, I am a classical musician working in a professional orchestra. I also teach violin students and thus my iPad moves between various music stands every day so number one I need the protection of the bumper. Then I’m also traveling a lot and I have meanwhile realized, after having used a MacBook Pro for 15 years, that the iPads have become so incredibly capable, that everything except for recording and producing a video conveniently, can be done on the iPad. I’m sure even that could be done on the iPad for an amateur or medium professional. So I have a nice desktop set up at home which I have become tired of disconnecting and reassembling many times a week when I travel between my main and secondary residence . I’m going with the logitech keyboard because it offers me a laptop replacement exactly when I need it without having to carry anything extra at the moment when I need the iPad as a music sheet on a music stand I can just remove the keyboard plus the iPad is more protected whereas with the Apple keyboard it would not be protected at all. This is my choice for my very personal and professional reasons. For putting it on the lap I have bought a cheap but very functional lap desk that solves the problem for just 20 bucks and as far as my desktop set up in my main residence is concerned, this is going to be replaced finally by an iMac after almost 20 years.

The perfect keyboard is something with a fixed hinge like the Magic Keyboard or the Bridge keyboard (to let it be lapable), utilizes the 3 pin connectors like the Magic Keyboard or Logitech's keyboard (because who wants Bluetooth connection if it can be hard connection and eliminates the need to charge 2 devices) *AND* can detach at the keyboard, similar to the Surface Book line up. Meaning the iPad stays magnetically connected to the back and physically disconnects from the keyboard so you can carry it around or lay it flat on the table to write but still provide some protection to the back of the iPad.
A Surface Pro like kickstand to stand up the iPad when it's separate from the keyboard would be the final ideal setup. Like the back portion of the Samsung Tab S7+ keyboard case.
Everyone comes close. But no one quite gets it.

The Combo Touch wins it for me. With the Magic Keyboard you can only use it in one way, which would be fine if you needed your iPad to be a 'laptop replacement'. But not everyone uses it like that. They want to be able to use it off the keyboard to watch movies or even hide the keyboard by flipping it around if you wanted to read books on or again watch movies or something like that. And also the addition of the function keys on the Combo Touch is nice and convenient too.

Logitech should also add detachable screen cover in the box similar to Apple's folio case. So when you don't want to carry a keyboard along but want to have protection for your ipad screen then you can use that lighter cover.

That'll boost the products demand like crazy tbh.

The deal breaker for me with the magic keyboard is the fact that if you want to hold the very expensive iPad in your hands without the keyboard, the iPad is exposed to fall damage.

I actually love the way the Magic Keyboard looks but i dislike that wobble i see when people type on it.

My solution to the naked iPad problem was to buy a smart folio for when I detach it from the keyboard. The smart folio is ridiculously over priced. I’ve also found that when I transfer the iPad back to the Magic Keyboard trackpad stops working and simply restarting the iPad doesn’t fix the problem. I found the procedure that does work is to put it back in the Smart folio and shut it down and then transfer it to the Magic Keyboard before turning on Alain. Kind of weird.

Looks like the iPad shakes and vibrates quite a bit while typing on the magic keyboard (3:44)(10:42) as opposed to no shaking or vibration on the combo touch. (3:50)(10:02) The Combo Touch looks like a much more solid experience. When I saw Chris touching the iPad screen when on the Magic Keyboard (8:56) there was a lot of movement. When he touched the screen with the iPad on the Combo Touch, it was rock solid with no movement. (8:23) I am sold on the Combo Touch with bigger track pad, dedicated shortcut keys, better overall protection of the iPad, easy keyboard removal for tablet use, no vibration or shaking while typing, and over $100.00 less than the Magic Keyboard.

I've had the magic keyboard for almost a year and a half, and I'm even a complete apple SHEEP....BUT. the stupid magic keyboard material drives me insane!! it gets all torn up, dirty, hard to clean, etc. and this ipad never really leaves my bag/desk. I just ordered the combo-touch so fingers crossed.
