I'm a casual fan too and I do not understand this take. 1. They've improved from 32 to 41 wins the last 3 seasons. 74 to 91 points. Not exactly vaulting up the standings, but at least they're not a laughingstock anymore. Not sure why that's acceptable in a hockey-crazed market like Detroit. 2. Other than Larkin, Raymond, DeBrincat, and Seider, how much of that improvement has come from players who will be contributors here for long? The team is full of Copps, Perrons, Holls, Chiarots, Sprongs, Comphers, etc. who are middling players that are entering the downswing of their careers. The growth hasn't exactly been organic. 3. Yzerman's also obsessed with drafting 200-foot two-way players which is all well and good, but the league has changed recently. Kasper and Danielson are probably going to be good pros, but it's totally reasonable to be concerned whether the Wings have the firepower in the farm system to keep up. It's not totally his fault given the Wings have gotten shafted in the Draft Lottery, but it doesn't change the fact that the Wings don't really have a superstar on this team at any position, or anyone who projects to be that kind of player.
@@Joshstradamusthanks for the breakdown. I have been working on getting back into the Wings but was so far removed that i had a difficult time seeing what everyone's concerns were.
Really? Ken Holland was seen as one of the BEST GMs in Hockey, until he started giving out 10-year contracts and lost his talent-judging capability. Yzerman is the EXACT opposite, happy to deliver the mediocrity that Chris "trust-fund" Illitch DEMANDS.
Yzerman is building a team for the playoffs. Platoon at goalie and see who’s hot. Both have shown to be good. Wings need more men up front, guys that will go into the corners and play defensively. Look at Tampa and now look at Florida. Not flashy, a couple high end players and lots of guys that have bought into the system, playing tough.
I guess people just like to complain and have something to talk about. WHen you look at how many years it took the WIngs to become irrelevant, even though they had the playoff streak intact, it will take more years to bring the team back when doing it through the draft. WHen you get in a hurry you start trading away long term prospects and long term success for short term success. Making the playoff is not the goal. Holland kept the streatk alive, but for years didn't have a team with any chance of a long playoff run or winning the cup. I am happy to wait 3 to 5 more years before getting too concerned about the Wings. I like what he says about free agents. They are not good enough to make a playoff run next year so why spend a lot of money on a big contract just to try and make the playoffs when you have no chance of winning anything. I think this whole conversation is just the udual sports talk. WHo cares if Kane walks out the door. He is not the future and spending too much money on hism would be a mistake. If Yzerman can get Kane at a reasonalble number then great and if not he has the courage to let him go. It would be idiotic of Yzerman to say they will make the playoff as he doesn't know. I believe he will make big moves at a time when he believes that have a chance for a deep playoff run and until then .... stay the course.
i think next year us a downgrade from this year, but i think yzerman is doing just about as good as anyone can so far. i think he should have been buyers at the deadline this year, but we would be at the same place right now anyways, just would have been cool to actually make the playoffs this year
Kenny is the only one whose right on this, Stevie said a bunch of nothing. Same as he's always done. They've gotten better every year, assets are managed well, and team is getting younger, he's fine as of now, ask me halfway through next season when we see what his picks became and I'll let you know.
This is liars poker, NHL style, but SY is playing Texas hold 'em. Relax until you see the river card. Defensemen are the problem, not the goalies. Edmonton is in game 7 for the cup with Skinner and Pickard!!!! Both EDM and DET had a .902 SV%. So don't tell me that a healthy Husso and Lyon aren't good enough.
They didnt win draft lottery as usual but they drafted good kids and still havent got the team built. Good thing he has left team in a good cap position
As he will probably do this year as well, Yzerman is passing up on explosive offensive talent in the draft for the "safe" 200 foot player. A team full of those types of players won't go anywhere. You absolutely need stars. Having said that, really, our only and best hope is that someone breaks out at the NHL level like Danielson, Buchelnikov, ASP, Kasper or Mazur and that they don't just remain steady but not spectacular. One big name free agent who can score would do wonders for this team in the meantime.
Christopher Ilitch obviously told Yzerman he wanted to have a competitive team while rebuilding to sell tickets.. How else would they be able to get a garbage company to sponsor them and put that garbage patch on their jersey? And that way instead of drafting top five we draft 15... That way instead of drafting the next McDavid you draft the next Dylan Larkin just like last year when we got Nate Danielson and Chicago got Bedard.. Need to go all in now or actually commit to a proper rebuild. They are trying to have it both ways and it just doesn't work.
The red wings were one of the worst teams in the league from 2018-2022 and literally one of the worst teams of all time in 2020. They fell in the draft all of the those years. If you don’t don’t know what you’re talking about don’t say anything at all.
@@rrundle4 ya I know what I'm talking about. They shouldn't of signed all these mid players the last few years and continued the hard tank until they got a franchise player.

When you have a cheap-assed owner who's been your buddy for 40 years, no sense of urgency needed on your part.
