Saying "nobody watches hockey" is incorrect. Highest tv numbers since 1996 this playoffs. It's really clear Mike isn't really a fan of the NHL he's making alot of statements that just sound uninformed. Can't compare Ken Hollads situation to Steve Yzermans. The oilers literally have 2 of the best players in the world and the wings don't have any talent close to that. Cause top end talent doesn't grow on trees.
If Yzerman would have inherited McDavid and Drai, on top of the other few top 3 picks they have, I'm confident they would have already won a Cup. And I'm not saying that because I think Yzerman is some kind of god GM, I just think he's more competent salary cap-era GM than Ken Holland is, and he has a substantially better drafting record than Holland in recent years.
@@europason2293 I agree with you. If anything Ken Holland should be criticized for not winning a cup already having the two best players on the planet. I'd be willing to give Holland his flowers for the Hyman contract. That looks phenomenal right now.
@@bradleylott5143nobody is debating TV numbers. It would be dumb of me to think the NHL could compete with the NFL. Especially when you compare the NFL to the NHL its just not fair.
5 years to take team from the absolute bottom of the league to nearing playoffs, and doing it without a 1OA or 2OA is absolutely a "special GM". I'm not an Yzerman bot, there are things he's messed up like the Holl signing, Copp for too much money, and not properly allowing a guy like Berggren to advance in the pipeline, but the vast majority of his other moves have been great. Seider and Raymond look like homeruns despite media absolutely shitting on the Seider pick, Cossa looks to make the NHL in 2 years full-time, Pellikka is putting up Erik Karlsson numbers in Sweden, Danielson nearly made the Wings this year, the list goes on. You want to be mad about not making playoffs still? That's fine, but to act like what Yzerman has accomplished in 5 years given the talent pool he was given and the cap situation he walked into is remarkable. This guy has no idea what he's talking about.
Yzerman was great at trading in Tampa, turning Conacher and Downie into Bishop and Vasilevskiy, but his 1st round drafting (GMs have more influence in 1st round picks) was spotty there, while Al Murray did most of the heavy lifting with finding some gems later. Yzerman has been good in Detroit, cleaning up most of Holland's mess, but some of his UFA signings were overpays or straight up unnecessary (Chiarot, Copp, Holl), some though were very good (Gostisbehere, Lyon, Sprong, Kane). The 1st round drafting has been mostly good since he came in, but the later rounds look to be quite meh to weak with Draper doing the work there. He's a good GM, not a great one, at least right now. To be fair to Yzerman, Holland left the biggest mess in the league for him to clean up.
Agree with Stoney, the Canadian Cup Drought is hilarious, I love it. Canadian team fans are mostly insufferable so seeing them and their stuck up media squirm is just great.
He may not be special as a gm but neither is Ken Holland. It took Edmonton this long to reach the finals with two of the best players in hockey and they’re still about to get swept
Do the US always win? Japan 2023 World Baseball Classic, Germany 2023 World Basketball Champions, 2023 Stanley Cup Champions 19 Canadian players on the Golden Knights. I think with what his draft positions have been, lottery luck or lack thereof he’s done pretty damn good with what he’s got. First draft pick he had was a grand slam. I think his draft picks are just starting to come into their own and really shine. The pro scouting has been a little below average. Florida and Dallas both have very good pro scouting teams. Jim Nill is a wizard of a GM, I’m sad the Wings didn’t get to keep him but he was ready to run a team.
Dallas has a really good amateur scouting team, decent pro scouting. Florida has pretty poor amateur scouting and terrible development, but GREAT pro scouting.

Holland is the most overrated GM of this generation. Once the salary cap came in, the Wings only got one Cup when they should have gotten more, and Holland made terrible move after terrible move, running the franchise into the ground (some blame on Ilitch for forcing Holland to continue the streak while Mr I was still alive). Holland has McDavid and Draisaitl there and gave Nurse and Campbell far too much money. His 1st round drafting is mostly bad and his only great moves are Hyman and Ekholm.
Kenny Holland can't draft, and it is showing in Edmonton. I think this is Edmonton only year to have a chance to win it all, and then this team will start it's decline. I think Holland will be fired within 3 seasons. As for Yzerman, he does draft well, and what makes him special is his ability to acquire value in trades and his appeal in the free agent market. Mike is incorrect thinking Canadian teams are full of Canadians. One team is no different than the other regardless of where they play.
