Born and raised in L.A.(1954), Santa Barbara and Ventura, Point Conception is 'The Turn' to get to N. Cal but Northern California doesn't actually begin until Big Sur area. Monterey is N. Cal, Pismo Is Not. Nice Ride today !!
So many people think all of California is warm. Not! The coast north of Santa Barbara can be warm but more often it is chilly. And the water is always cold. I am binging on your videos, loving your project. My husband and I grew up just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, now live in Portland, OR. This summer we will cruise British Columbia for four months on our 1981 Valiant 40 which we keep near Port Townsend, WA.
Natural seepage can be seen coming out of cliffs along the shore. In particular at Carpentaria Beach South of Santa Barbara. Hence the Indiginous tribes built boats out of wood and sealed them with the oil/tar. Carpentaria was named by the Spanish for the place that carpenters built the boats.
RUclips suggested your channel to me, I’m enjoying your journey so I’ve gone back to your start. Southern California really did shift the mood for everyone on the boat. Glad for your family. It’s what living is truly about - who’s in your life and what you do together with the time allotted. I’m here for the journey. Love from Toronto. Also, I love your dad. He’s so calm and mellow. What a good vibe to be around. P.S. he reminds me of the man from Up. ❤
Firefighting Planes and Helos: Planes drop red stuff, Borate. Helos drop water. FOAM is used for gas/oil fires. In Santa Barbara, walk the beach at night and watch the phosphorescence with every step ! David Crosby (C,S,N) kept his boat at the Sant Barbara marina for years.
Nice Sail down the coast. Think the most important thing is the weather. If you have time and weather then not much difference between day trips or long passages. You should check to see what the auto pilot is driving is getting bound or bearings need lube / replaced. Cotter pins are sometimes used to prevent damage and break before something else. Oh.. nice use of the map. Really provided some good perspective of your sail. Great Job! Keep At it!
The cotter pin was just a fraction too small the first time I replaced it. Each time the drive unit motor turned from port to starboard it put a lot of jolted pressure on the pin. I put a bigger pin in at Cojo anchorage, had to tap it in with a hammer so it’s a good fit. It has been working perfectly since then. You are correct regarding the weather, so long as time permits, it’s great to be able to go when we want. Then we get to decide what the conditions will be like. Cheers, Mick
Hey Meraki Crew!! What an epic video - just a blast to watch!! I have to say your production quality is really excellent - keep it up!!! Mick, your wide eyed grinning in the background (head poking up) makes me laugh every time. And wow.. Santa Barbara.. just got added to the must-visit list!! ❤️ Sail on Meraki!!! ⛵️ ~SV Aribel
Thanks for the kind words guys! We just loved Santa Barbara - we got pretty lucky and only had one day where the swells were up and the anchorage was rolly.
The oil seeps actually do occur naturally in this area. I've lived here for decades and it's unrelated to oil extraction ( and I am VERY unfriendly with the O&G industry). I've dived along some of the undersea fractures and watched the oil and gas bubble up pretty energetically along this geological anticline. Hate it, and I've taken oiled birds in to the local animal rescue organization. It's a fact of life around here unfortunately. Have a GREAT journey through here to your endpoint!
Driving from Morro Bay to the city of San Luis Obispo is about the same as Port San Luis to the city. BTW LUIS is pronounced the Spanish way, The S is not silent. It sounds like you found the Santa Ana winds, they originate out in Nevada, Utah and every time they come over a ridge and come downhill the air dries out and gets warmer. More prevalent in Southern California, the central coast and San Francisco can get them. It can push our temperatures up 20 degrees.
❤️❤️❤️❤️ when y'all said it was 26° and I live in Oregon so I'm F° and y'all got into bathing suits and I was like y'all nuts tell I realized y'all are from Canada 😅🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👏👏
Found the channel from the comment you left on the Sailing Nahoa channel. Alrighty, let's subscribe then. Looking forward to more of this unscripted footage of you, sharing the local cultures you encounter, together with your challenges; rural places you explore and funny moments. It seems that you are nicely unscripted, and show personality like Ben and Ashley, or Sailing Zingaro - which is a good thing. Personally, I prefer that to guys who are overly produced and scripted, and make personality-less, bland 'Nat Geo documentary' type posts. So, its good to be with you. Fair winds to you, and continue this great sharing of ya victories, fails, funnies, philosophical moments, and personality. Catch ya next week.
i love ur videos n cant wait til nxt 1..whens mom n dad coming? such beautiful way 2 live..enjoy ur family n ur life with them.c u nxt wk.same bat time same bat channel. hugs
Hey Barbie! Thanks so much for your kind words! We hope to have an update on mom and dads boat situation soon. COVID lockdowns are slowing them up a bit unfortunately. We really miss them!
Thanks so much for joining us for this journey! Questions? Feel free to ask in the comments below!
Happy Birthday Michael!! 😃 Glad you are all having such a great time, well done on the zinc fix and take care. Love, dad😊
Thanks Dad.

It’s so true! We totally didn’t realize how chilly northern Cali can be! Enjoy BC such special cruising grounds and thanks for watching :)
Yes, that’s natural seepage. It sticks to your feet on the beach. Santa Barbara is the best. Can’t wait to see the rest of the trip through SoCal!
So crazy! We had never heard of such a thing!!!! 😱 had absolutely no idea!

Those Santa Ana’s are no joke!
