- A mini Episode 7. We have an Airmar DST810 and recently the inside of our boat became very wet when we removed it for cleaning while in the water. Video shows it working properly, and what happens if it does not work. with 0.7m of hydrostatic head, there is potential for 10,000 litres per hour to flood in if it isn't stopped. glad its not a skin fitting failing. Life onboard our sailboat.
I am here for the content, but absolutely am here for the Mayday Parade t-shirt
Haha, Yes! Thankyou Rik!
Like how you guys do things keep it up
We try
I can’t help but notice the beautiful plants in your videos…please talk about them next time 😆
we'll be sure to include them soon ;) they are part of the crew, after all.
We do this regularly, if you quickly put your hand over the hole when removing one and then remove as you put the new one in the water coming out can be minimal even without the valve. Your hand over the top will stop the water easily, there actually isn't that much pressure.
Correct! about 1psi. I shall have to try. thanks
Haha…reminds me of when my dad did the same thing. To make the fitting slide in easier, he gave it a good spray of WD40….mistake, the solvent in WD40 makes some plastics sticky…heck of a job getting it back in…locker got a good wash out though!
I had a surprising effort finding silicone grease to do the job. I've become weary of WD40 not being the best for most things now. Also, in fairness, as soon as the rubber seal is wet its plenty slippery enough on its own to just slide in. thanks for commenting. :)
I thought I would watch this before I pulled my airmar... I found two good sized mussels growing!! I wondered why it wasn't reading... bonus is I get a nice little starter with my meal tonight! Don't spend too long in the Galicia near the mussel farms!
Wait, new idea.... keep the boat near the mussel farms....lose 3kn hulls speed, but gain endless supply of muscles. :)
@@theincompetentcrew perfect idea!!
I've got one of those in skylark, it works for a short while then gets plugged up. Don't even worry about it anymore
I was a bit disappointed to learn just how quick the paddlewheel stops spinning with the lightest fouling. But, I do also swim around the boat regularly and have a couple of options to clean it. Seems I have created another job for regular maintenance. :)
It is just a hole in the boat......wise man talking 😂
If you think about it almost everything on a boat is scary.
true that!
I think I’ll wait for my annual haul out, thank you 😅
At some point you might be tempted. Haha. Thanks for the comment.
Heads are the worse. Old school wooden tapered bung at each through hull fitting, plastic too easy to break IMHO.
a lot of our seacocks are the old bronze and at each haul out look good as the day they were made. the warnings on the new plastic thru-hull about keeping away from certain cleaning products and antifoul are disconcerting. thanks for the comment. 😄
Use a toothbrush to clean it. And it must be CLEAN.
I'm realizing this now, the paddlewheel stops so easily with the slightest dirt. thanks for the tip. I will use Karli's brush tomorrow . :)
please don't ever pull the plug again!
Can't help it. new favourite thing
