    Is there anything better than a telecaster going into a classic Fender tweed? It’s the ultimate pedal platform.

      Definitely. I think he was just eager to get to playing and didn’t want me to give a history lesson, haha. Either way, I dropped off a nano-sized Lizard Queen at Vito’s place yesterday. It’s going right to use.

    When he said “I’ve heard of it but I haven’t heard it.” I couldn’t help but think of Mike Birbiglia’s bit when he says that if you ask someone if they’ve seen this new piece of tech or news event or whatever and they say “no, but I’ve heard about it.” What they really mean is “I haven’t heard about it… but I like you.” Nice video!

    As a fan of EH since the 90s and JHS much more recently, I appreciate what you've done here. Much respect to Vito, who plays better than I could ever dream to, but I still prefer this pedal's response to single coils, the humbuckers strike me as a bit muddy in the context of an overall mix. Admittedly that may be more the pickup's fault than the pedal's.

  • @Guitar_Ted

    I think the magic here was that Vito had no idea what to expect. If you can find people like that to match up with other pedals that they have no clue about, and get reactions from them that are as raw and real as this? That would be cool. (Good luck on that, by the way!) Gotta be the best Lizard Queen vid out there hands down. Thanks for deciding to allow what you had on tape go out like you did. That takes courage in these days where everyone is trying to be so polished and produced.

    So, shortly after the pedal was released, a schematic and PCB layout was posted online. I don't normally do so, but I was curious, and snagged it. At the time, there weren't any decent demos of it posted; at least nothing that allowed one to tease apart what was pedal, and what was amp settings, so I decided to build it.. I dickered with transistor selection for a bit. Last night, after watching a related RUclips demo, I incorporated a germanium transistor into my build, since the stage that provides the octaving seems to rely on an NPN/PNP pair close in gain/hfe. The posted schematic was also a little imprecise about a few components - something that I imagine will eventually be revealed.
    It's a fun pedal, though not one of those where-has-this-been-all-my-life pedals. It's capable of an interesting range of tones, from thick and woolly to frizzy (what one magazine octave-fuzz project once described as "struzz"). What I found interesting is that turning down the guitar volume a bit (say, from 10 to 7) introduces what feels like an entirely different family of "crunch" tones. A pity that you didn't nudge Vito to explore that. I find that, with Balance set to max, and Octave set to min, the sonic difference between neck and bridge pickups is minimal, at best; something that was apparent when Vito switched to the blue dual-HB guitar. Their difference, however, tends to emerge when the guitar volume is turned down a bit. What's nice is that by simply turning the guitar up, you transition from a tone more suitable for hard rock rhythm playing to commanding woolly lead tones of the "violin" variety. Heck, even Eric Johnson might like them.
    The "octaving" is there, but not nearly as robust and obvious as in, say, the Foxx Tone Machine. One really has to hold a note with some finger vibrato, like Vito does, for any octave "bloom" to occur. But it's there, if in smaller portions. And, as Vito illustrates, you get a little more on the neck pickup than with the bridge. As with any and all analog octave fuzzes, though, if you bend a double stop, you get the characteristic audible *downward* sliding tone, even though the bend should produce an upward change in pitch. But, like I say, having been through easily 10 different analog octave-up fuzzes, they ALL do that. And, like all analog octave-up units, if you reduce the intensity of the "drive" (combination of Balance control and guitar volume setting), crank the Octave control, select the bridge pickup, and pick close to the bridge, you can get a tone similar to an electric sitar.
    Again, these comments are based on MY build, which also includes a germanium transistor (2SB171, to be precise, paired up with a 2N2222)

    How does this pedal compare to the ehx octavix?

  • @studmuffin1212
    @studmuffin1212 Год назад

    So what's the difference between this EHX octave fuzz and EHX's Octavix?

    • @StompboxBreakdown
      @StompboxBreakdown  Год назад

      Well, I don’t have an OctaviX, so I can’t say personally, but based on what I’ve heard, the OctaviX sounds a little thicker, where the Lizard Queen has a raspier sound. Also, the controls are different, so the Lizard Queen shifts between a heavy rounder fuzz on the sun side and the thinner sputtery fuzz on the shadow side.
