Stompbox Breakdown

Getting the most from our effects starts with figuring out what a pedal does. In this channel, we take a look at effects and how we can use them to augment our sound. Each video focuses on a specific pedal, but we're not here to shill. We'll talk about what the effect is doing, how it does it differently from the others, and how we can use that to create our own sound.
Ibanez RC99 Rotary Chorus - A Unique Spin on Modulation

what about the gr50 oh thats a rack mount so it does not count .... i love the gr50 i owned both gr1 and a 50 .still have my gr1 . i used it recently for recording - the flutes and the vibes are great .
What happens if you use this with a compressor? Would it go before or after? 🤔
I like the CE-3
I just got one of these because of your video. I will defer to your drastically superior experience with every chorus under the sun (I have only really used the super 80s Boss DC-2w and CH-1, the TC Electronic 2290p, Eventide Tricerachorus; and Visual Sound H2O). But I have to ask, wouldn't the Jazz be the JC-120, and the Vintage be a CE-1? Are we overthinking what Digitech was trying to make obvious? Admittedly, I don't have much experience with the CE-1 or the JC-120. Neither are my cup of choral tea, but I love the Jazz setting on this Hardwire. Subtle and useful.
Thanks for this. Grabbed a used SY-1 a few months ago and I’ve quickly realized that switching between sounds is garbage and not tenable live. Just ordered an SY-200!
Interesting demo, I want to use it as a clean boost after big muff style fuzz -- what do you thonk about it as a boost?
As a clean boost -- I mean tweak it with a minimum gain as much as possible while max out the volume
Had one for years. Just bought a 66 dollar used tonight. Haven't had 'my sound' since. This one is the ticket. I just remember it was yellow and had 4 dials. Better than 3.
Smd isn't super difficult to work on. You need tweezers and a smaller soldering iron tip and maybe temperature control, which are better to have anyway. And the components tend to have tighter tolerances and a little less noise. So, not all bad.
How are the ch1 and ch5 different besides the eq?
Stewart’s hat!!! Where are you from?
I recorded someone once who had one of those and it sounded nothing like my Fender amp. But if you don’t have a real fender. You can get a small solid state Vibro champ for $250
I've tried a number of different uni-vibe pedals, and I prefer the Micro Vibe above the others. It has a very warm sound.
“sexy knob” is not a phrase i wanna hear again 😅😊
10:10 - GAME OVER
try actually reversing the recording of the reverse pedals. does it sound “normal” then? edit: that last one did sound good 😂
Man that was a very cool interesting video. First time visiting your channel and I subscribed. Looking forward to watch and binge watching more videos
remember, the guitar is actually a transposition instrument, meaning that the written notes on the musical staff do NOT actually represent the correct tones. However, because the guitar is written an octave up from the actual notes that are playing, so the notes have the same letter name, most people don’t realize that this is the case. the point being, the “A” that you played (as at least on comment already pointed out) is NOT 440hz, but 220hz. the 440hz “A” is the 5th fret “A” on the high “E” string. …and yes, this is the case for the bass guitar too. If the bass weren’t transposed, most of the notes would be below the staff, and it would be reeeeally annoying to write for. in fact, this is the reason the guitar is transposed as well. if it was written in a way where the notes actually corresponded to the proper frequencies, most of the 1st position notes would either be in bass clef, or between bass and treble clef. you’d have to use something weird like baritone clef or something. it’s just easier to write the guitar in treble clef by transposing all the notes up one octave.
I run my CE-2 into my CE-3 and turn the rate and depth down making a super lush Chorus I. Stereo!
Will it do In Utero tones?
I would imagine there are far less complicated effects one could use. I’d start with a warbley chorus.
Homeboy delay pedal was so delayed by all his delays I am just now hearing it years after he recorded it. Far-out
I have an old battered version of this pedal. I got it as a gift from a friend like 25 years or so ago. Sadly the feedback function never really worked. I think I managed to hear that feedback thing once or twice. I've used it as a distortion pedal though during the years, and in that regard it works well as a classic Boss dist pedal. Since this is the early version maybe it would be worth looking up if the feedback function could be restored? Would be fun to be able to use that sometimes.
Пояему педаль не стерео?
man i didnt think that the russian smallstone would sound THAT much different! to my ears its the most pleasant sounding with less of the peaky resonance of the nano especially with the color switch up, i have a nano and i do love it but if i can find a russian one im gonna have to get it
holy crap, i always wanted the Black Finger Compressor (you don’t have it here, but it was in this same line of pedals) and i had no idea how big these were….. 😳
Oh yeah. They’re an ordeal. And I got myself a black finger IN THE WOODEN BOX after recording this
My question what's the difference between ce5 and ch1? Is it just the eq? Or is anything else different?
I was looking at these today. I had long ago a chorus from Boss . I got in Japan . It was big and plugged into the wall. I bought the CH1 super chorus earlier today. Seeing your video now. I guess I was lucky.
I think its mostly another case of "wah its not the original, waaah they changed it a bit"
Great review, friend
I dont understand why the tonelock system isnt standard by now with any pedals. Its so great for gigging
sounds great
No u
Aaannndddd... It's a chorus pedal, they just go about it a different way than most pedals labeled " chorus".
The FL99 dual analogue is a great flanger
I definitely want to get my hands on one of those.
Those old Zoom pedals are still very useful. I have the 505, 508 and 707. Great demo, now I need to add the 509 to my collection
Pizza is like sex even if its bad its still kinda good
This pedal ticks all the boxes: sublime vibrato, tasty rotary emulation, and a cool graphic. I think Ibanez is my new favorite boutique pedal brand. 😅
Yooooooo!!! You’re trippin’ your jellyfish out…they’re swimmin’ upside down and shit…actually…they’re just diggin’ it…dope!
Appreciate the duck pun. 😆
I just found your channel but I really love your videos and your pedal-wisdom, great job!!
FL-99 is another gem. Either way, what makes them special is that the LFO sweep is slightly off center, which gives it added dimension. With the FL-99, if you get the controls down low enough, it'll will cop a nice chorus too. The only issue with these is the placement of the BBD clock chip, which is really close to the pots board stacked over top. With age, the BBD clock chip starts to bleed more, and it gets picked up by the pots overhead, and it ends up ticking into the audio like a mofo. You can change the caps, clean the pots all you want, but it won't fix the tick issue. There's an easy fix though, which I documented over at DIYSB.
Have the FL99 and am not selling it any year soon
Nice jam
Bring on more chorus pedals, one can never have enough! Personally I have been exploring Yamaha's range of vintage chorus pedals, there's some gems well worth looking at ( thinking the hard to find dc-100 Dimension chorus and DSC-20M digital chorus - unique takes on the Boss dc-2 & dc-3). Always look forward to your in-depth reviews.
I think the OD2 is to the OD3 what the DS-2 is to the DS-1.
That's dope!
Speaking of something a little different, is that a picture of the beefiest, most muscular butterfly ever on the pedal? 💪🦋
Yes it is! And I might be thinking of getting it as a tattoo, haha
The dyslexic input and output jacks are not a pedalboard's friend.
what is a PBV? that venn diagram is kinda hard to read haha
I threw it together out of nothing... but Phase-Based Vibrato
@@StompboxBreakdown we need an official fancy one
I'm not sure if a venn diagram or a truth table makes more sense... but I've thought about it
@ definitely need a video on this concept you would get a lot of spicey disagreements in the comments but i bet it would be funny. even if you only said nice things, internet humans would have a lot of feelings about category boundaries
The tune made me sub. Loved it.
Thank you! It was one of my favorite collaborations
As a chorus it's quite nice, but doesn't convince me of its rotary designation.
Agreed, I think it was more like a "What small adjustments can we make that can give this a more interesting name?" type of thing.
Wow! big fan of the enclosure shape and design! Researching the other pedals in that series now. The phaser and flanger have an "intense" foot switch lol
It's really nice to hear a chorus effect that doesn't sound like a cartoon when you jack up the rate. I like that. A lot.
I agree. I mean, the amount of pitch variation is a function of the oscillation shape, the speed, and the depth. Kind of like waving a piece of cloth in the air. Somehow, this has a pleasing tone instead of a seasick or wiggle-wiggle one.
