As a Canadian, when you said you got the part from Radio Shack, I almost spit out my coffee… we haven’t had a Radio Shack here in decades, and they were an awesome part of my youth in the early 80s.
@@StompboxBreakdown I'm glad I did, because of this vid I have now learned a ton I about this pedal that I was unaware of. Gotta go convert my PH-1r to PSA now...
I love this sort of rescue pedal story nearly as much as I love your demo jams... seriously, put those things on a loop and I'd be entertained for days. You are a multitalented individual, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. :)
Great video! It's super dope that you're showing people how to take care of their own equipment! That being said we gotta get you some new side cutters, homie. I've been using the Knipex 77 41 115 as my go to general purpose electronics cutters for a number of years and they're perfect for this kind of thing. Thanks for the great content!
Thanks! I knew someone was gonna call me out for my sloppy cut there. I realized as I was wrapping up that I didn't grab my Hakko Micro Cutter from downstairs, so I just used what was within arm's reach.
I have a friend that has one of these (he’s got an old MIJ DS-1 too) and it’s practically in mint condition cause of how careful he is with his gear. It sounds really nice too. I wish Boss would Waza up the PH-1r, I’d buy one!
One of my favorite phasers! Love how gooey it gets. Have that one and an MXR Phase 90. The Boss is definitely more tweakable, and it has a rounder, more vowel-like oscillation that makes it my ideal phaser for clean passages and post-gain phasing!
I was going to complain about my PH-2 Super Phaser, and then I realized I've never ever heard it with an ACA power supply or 12V from my Voodoo Labs. I've also never run my OC-2 on ACA. I guess I've got some experimenting to do. I never should have sold my PH-1 back in the day
I’ve had a PH1-r for over 15 years now and it’s really gone downhill sound wise in the last few years. I had no idea what to do about it, that is until I viewed your video. Thank you!
Idk how I've gone this long not realizing there are two old Boss phasers. Never was interested cause the other one is only 2 knobs. But this R version sounds really really good wow. I might get one of these
Been heavily into chorus and flangers for decades. Off and on the fence about phasers all that time. Guess you put me back on. Gonna try. Some day ;-))
Cool - the resonance (aka feedback?) lets you kind of mimic a six stage Meistro or similar, then go back to an MXR sound, that's what I'm getting here. And true to character, Boss is ahead of their time giving you more controls than just rate. If anybody ever fixed pedals professionally anymore I'd get one now. A few years ago I got the newest one and didn't like it. Great video!
That's so rad that you could - at one time - actually fix a Boss pedal or mod it. Not so much the case anymore, which is kind of depressing. That is an interesting phaser. Much different than my Phase 90.
Always thought the R was for Race Mode. Big fan Top Gear UK right here. It seems it could nail a country Waylon Jennings phaser because of the resonance and sibilance. It seems higher up and vocal in ways that the phase 45 or 90 both have a lower mid growl to them. I could see the case for it sounding ehx for sure. I usually go for slow crawling phasers but often when those are turned faster they lose the appeal. This one has a nice swirl when turned fast
@@StompboxBreakdown they do sell wireless plans lol but yep they've still got the bins with all the resistors, caps, diodes, etc in the old school Radio Shack packaging...it's privately owned by a local guy but hes still a radio shack location somehow..I'm 47 and it's been there with the same guy running it as long as i can remember...been going in there basically my whole life
The phaser stages are driven by transistors, and transistors can have varying "sweet spots" for their optimal voltage ranges, even for the same model, even within the same batch. Because of this, the bias knob lets us make sure that the sweep is working the best operating range of those transistors, and therefore sweeping the intended frequencies. If you look at the schematic, it sits directly between those four transistors (one per stage) and the Depth knob.
@@StompboxBreakdown Yes but the Bias Trim Pot is adjusting to bias the voltage for 4X transistors? each transistor has a different sweet spot so technically it should have 4 separate bias trim pots
Hey man i love your videos and appreciate them. I also like doing solder work. Just because it is an important thing for me i want to say something about it. Maybe you already know it but Please don’t use leaded solder when you are tinkering around. Lead is a very toxic material and can cause damage to you and others around you. Use lead free solder.
Good call. I bought a huge roll of it a while ago and have been working through it for years, and I know I should be alright as long as I don't eat it, but I just ordered a lead-free roll.
Sorry man I wasn’t going to say anything, but…..Almost Electro Harmonixesque ? Really? That’s an insult to EHX That is a highly questionable Phaser Stop wasting your time and get an Akai Intelliphase🎸🚀🥳

Great job saving this forgotten classic from the landfill. 👍🏼

When I got mine it was precisely because the previous owner thought it was weak-sounding; then I fed it 12V and voila! It sounded deep and lush again.
Saw your interview on Pedal Experiments. Good stuff!
Great video, I love the PH-1r. Thanks for the shout out 👍
The shelf life content was great info. And the whole video was fun, as usual. I'll be re-examining my 30 yo Boss CE-3. :)
LOL on the "remember Harmony Central ? remember Radio Shack?" haha
I've never really been a fan of phaser (at least the bug hasn't bitten me yet) but this pedal is doing something for me.
I've listened to Pennyroyal Tea since it was released, but I never realized how great it sounds with Phaser. Nice video man!
Great Tee. What a cool band they are.
Absolutely. Great vibes from those albums.
Agree with you there. Must see them live one day.
They played a tiny bar in Kingston, NY years and years ago. Thats how they landed on my radar. Crazy seeing them out there with Clutch.
Long ago in the late 70s I hand the Green Boss phase with only two knobs, that extra "res" knob certainly makes a richer resonant sound.

I have all 4 Boss phasers, they each have their own special place.
There's very little in life that can't be improved with a Phaser!

Definitely one of my favorite Boss pedals! They should do a Waza version.
Absolutely. If they do a Waza phaser, this is the one.
My love just skyrocketed as you just considered how the pedal might be affected by your death.
Tele solo was lovely

If you can find it, the EHX Flanger Hoax is a big box of funky goodness.
Oh I found one. Six videos ago :)

man i need to look up how these sound on bass. are there any affordable clones of the PH-1R?

What is The Spectrum?
It lets you boost a specific band of frequencies. It was Boss's first compact pedal in 1977.
Warriors come out to play!
The Bias Calibration is doing what to the phaser circuit?
The phaser stages are driven by transistors, and transistors can have varying "sweet spots" for their optimal voltage ranges, even for the same model, even within the same batch. Yup, the service manual has a few words to say about that as well.

What
@@StompboxBreakdown I wanted to ask if you have Ibanez PM7 in your pedal collection?
It's the best because it's green.
