Hell, it still is after 50 years and hundreds of listenings. I'm still hearing nuances I hadn't heard before. This song is as close to a rock anthem as there is in my book. I don't know if its ever been coverd before but if someone is going to do it justice, Mr. Stapleton is the person I would have picked. He and the whole band here captured the essence perfectly. I have been following the Allman Bros Band since I first heard them almost 50 years ago. The first album I heard was on an FM station out of Portland, Oregon. My girlfriend had just broken up with me, so I did what I always did back then after receiving bad news. I had a little herb, and turned out all the lights, to match my mood, and tuned into the best FM station at the time. I can't remember the name of the station, but the DJ said he had just got in a new record. He said it was the new ABB album which happened to be a double live album. I had never heard of the Band before, then he said he was going to play as much of it without interruptions as he could. Back in those days the weren't many rules to follow. So he put the needle down and for the next buck twenty-five I was introduced to the best jam band in the world. When this song played at the end it was 22+ minutes of the best damn song I ever heard. It still is. I have heard some pretty good knock-offs of it in the last years, Mountain Heart does a good one. This one though captures the heart of the song as good as any I've heard. This song should always be recorded live as this one was. I will be back here to hear it again. Great job from all the members of this band
Chris grew up about an hour from me. He makes all of us proud. It would probably shock people to know just how much raw talent is just sitting up in the hills of southeastern Kentucky, Tennessee, and southwestern West Virginia.
Kenny, thanks for sharing this video of this band's live performance of a great version of this ABB song... They played it like they meant to honor the song as it was created to be performed.
I've listened to a few different versions of this song, and no band does the guitar solos like the original ABB- they are simply out of this world. But Stapleton's vocals here give me chills. The raspiness of his voice each time he sings the word "tied" evokes the feeling of someone being given 30 lashes. Chris SOUNDS like he's screaming in pain, while still making it sound like music.
Much as I love Chris Stapleton, I feel like there's some haunted, desperate element to Gregg Allman's voice that just elevates this song to a whole other level.
You're right, there was. It was his attempt at getting through life and staying alive. Seriously. He was a white man with ties to the old country bluesmen.
What manner of rock magic is this !! Chris, the Brothers, every single person on this stage brought it home, took it to bed and made it breakfast in the morning !! You guys are pure and wonderful and I think I woke up my whole building this morning !!
Kenny Greenberg with Bobby Bradford Blues Band. Kenny came to Nashville from Louisville, Ky with his best friend at the time Jeff Zimmerman, and immediately hooked up with Bobby. That was around '71, I think, anyway, he had only been playing guitar for about 2 years then, maybe a little more but he was smokin'. Before long, after Bobby joined the Navy, Kenny was doing the sessions thing from Nashville to LA and back. He is an awesome human, a real down-to-earth guy. He makes you feel like you belong. He never got caught up in all that B/S that was happening back in the day! He constantly played gigs, went home, and practiced until the sun came up then he slept. Are there any aspiring musicians out there? This is the way it's done! It starts with a dream then you become dedicated and with that comes sacrifice. Without all 3 all you have is hope. Anyway, awesome rendition of Whipping Post with Gregg in the front row!
powbobs www.wideopencountry.com/see-chris-stapletons-smoking-cover-allman-brothers-whipping-post/ this was recorded in 2015, Gregg passed in 2017. I’ve seen the ABB more times than I can count, I know what Gregg looks like. I was lucky enough to be at the Beacon in NYC to see their final run. Believe me, that is Gregg Allman.
The Sheepdogs do a pretty gnarly cover as well, but there isn’t a video with professional quality on RUclips. Caught them a few years back in concert and it was superb. Idk if it’s better than this, but worth a listen if you can find it.
Great arrangement. The horns are put in the right spots and make accents that seem very natural. Great guitar work and Staplon is the perfect keeper of the flame for this vocal. Best interpreter of Greg's vocals.
I'm 24 so relatively young for someone who has listened to this song countless times for many years (especially living near DC and the music culture of this area while growing up), and I got straight up chills probably 5 times in the first 90 seconds. Gonna have to start listening to some Stapleton, good amount of soul in his voice
We all grew up playing that tune and there are thousands of versions put there but this was exceptional! Every time I hear Chris Stapleton and band play I am more impressed. The horns doubling the organ line is just awesome. The only way this could have been made better is to add another drummer as good as this one. Thanks Chris!
So awesome to see Kenny Greenberg on this......from the Prisoners of Love with Jimmy Hall to The Fortunate Sons to the arena gigs.....such a great player!!
Chris Stapleton could sing the phone book and it would be amazing. One of if not the greatest singer of all time. I could listen to him sing 24-7 and never get tired of hearing his voice.
All I can say is....WOW!! Before hearing this, I would have said no one could do a righteous cover of this Allman Brothers Band classic, but damn if Chris Stapleton didn't!!! I've seen him live. I should have known. 😁❤
Wow! One of my favorite singers, covering one of my favorite songs that originally featured another of my favorite singers. What could go wrong? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Very nice version...the slide player is even playing a Gold Top, Just like Sky Dog did, back in the day!
@@keithlangdon1103 Agreed...or at least the song MUST be respected. As an example, another of my favorite songs is "Dreams", again by ABB. Now, much as I like Molly Hatchet, I despise their cover of that song. I feel they did a disservice to the song, and themselves. They are a better band than that.
@@cavecookie1 Molly Hatchett’s version was a third rate knock-off of the Buddy Miles version. And while Duane did play a Goldtop early on (though his was a ‘57 with PAF’s rather than the P90’s on this guy’s), he never played slide on “Whipping Post.” At least not on any of the many versions I’ve heard.
Theodore Nugent, were you even listening? You're probably not even a musician. If you are, not a good gigging one because your ears are full of the door door. That's Willie Weaks on bass. ANYTHING he plays on DOESN'T suck. This was a damn good version
I grew up with the ABB. Saw them several times in Piedmont Park in Atlanta when they were just getting started plus every time they played near by. Even saw them in Germany when I was stationed there in the army. Needless to say in my opinion they are the best band ever. This was an awesome tribute and it’s a shame Greg and Chris couldn’t have played and sang together. Rock on

But Stapleton's vocals here give me chills. The raspiness of his voice each time he sings the word "tied" evokes the feeling of someone being given 30 lashes. Chris SOUNDS like he's screaming in pain, while still making it sound like music.
Correct
Chris Stapleton is the type of musician that plays for a room full of great musicians, and they all say, "That was AMAZING!""
Much as I love Chris Stapleton, I feel like there's some haunted, desperate element to Gregg Allman's voice that just elevates this song to a whole other level.
I totally agree.. Greg's haunted and hard - edged voice cannot be topped.😎
You're right, there was. It was his attempt at getting through life and staying alive. Seriously. He was a white man with ties to the old country bluesmen.
ding ding ding. It makes it what it is
Well said
Loved to hear his band live,it was always sureal. But still thrilled by this version,it has great soul...
Kenny Greenberg!!!!
Holey Moley! 🔥🔥🔥
Kids, that is what a 1st call musician sounds like...
What manner of rock magic is this !! Chris, the Brothers, every single person on this stage brought it home, took it to bed and made it breakfast in the morning !! You guys are pure and wonderful and I think I woke up my whole building this morning !!
Dudes got some pipes!
Smokin’. One of the greatest song ever and Stapleton crushed it.
As an avid Allman Brothers fan for since 1970 I think Greg and Duane will be proud of this
Fantastic cover! I think Chris sings it better than anyone! Excuse me while I listen to it again for the hundredth time!
And Greg Allman himself applauding at the end of the video. Fantastic
Wow!! If this doesnt move you then check your pulse!! Chris kills it. He is the best singer in the business right now.
And just like that, another generation witnesses the greatness of the Allman Brothers Band!
If you are going to cover a classic, you really need to go for it! They went for it!
The best cover of this I have heard, outstanding,
Probably the shortest whipping post ive ever heard but they killed it
He blows the roof off the place with the master, Gregg Allman giving a standing ovation! Awesome!
That wasn't Greg Allman
It most certainly was.
Edge Mo
Gregg Allman has been dead for a while. So,no.
Greg did this better. Chris is awesome but Greg was better and Duane was a guitar master.
powbobs www.wideopencountry.com/see-chris-stapletons-smoking-cover-allman-brothers-whipping-post/ this was recorded in 2015, Gregg passed in 2017. I’ve seen the ABB more times than I can count, I know what Gregg looks like. I was lucky enough to be at the Beacon in NYC to see their final run. Believe me, that is Gregg Allman.
Chris Stapleton is a damned beast!
Whoa dude.
Such a great band.
Tight and in the pocket.
Soooo good …❤❤❤❤
Excellent Kenny! That guitar work kicked butt!!
Outstanding song very well performed
Holy shit.
I mean, holy SHIT!!
Absolutely the BEST cover of this song in the history of ever.
Tk Boyd search RUclips Jason Isbell and 400 unit cover. Blows this away. Love Stapleton, but Isbell got him on this one
The Sheepdogs do a pretty gnarly cover as well, but there isn’t a video with professional quality on RUclips. Caught them a few years back in concert and it was superb. Idk if it’s better than this, but worth a listen if you can find it.
Nah have y'all heard the Steel Woods do it? 🤩🔥🔥
Zac Brown Band does a great version live. Clay Cook tears it up. Not saying it’s better but worth a listen.
The Steel Woods do a better cover than this, love Chris but it’s true
Great arrangement. The horns are put in the right spots and make accents that seem very natural. Great guitar work and Staplon is the perfect keeper of the flame for this vocal. Best interpreter of Greg's vocals.
Outstanding. Chris Stapleton nails the vocal. So good.
Chris could easily be the only musician I'd ever have to listen to again. Live eternal Mr. Stapleton!
That guitar tone is insane 🔥
Chris'? Or the lead (Kenny Greenberg)
Or the slide guy in back?
Very rich tone...love his sound. (Kenny's)
PAFs through a Bassman? Yeah, that's gonna be a good time.
It’s amazing i wish that thing was louder
I'm 24 so relatively young for someone who has listened to this song countless times for many years (especially living near DC and the music culture of this area while growing up), and I got straight up chills probably 5 times in the first 90 seconds. Gonna have to start listening to some Stapleton, good amount of soul in his voice
What a privilege to have Gregg Allman in that audience listening and then standing up for your performance. Holy schnikey.
Citizenesse
Gregg Allmann has bean dead since May 2017.
That's Gregg. In the vest. Pay attention son.
@@chrisanderson9374 thanks. You saved me the trouble of responding to powerbob.
You could tie me to a whipping pole and I would still love 💘❤Chris singing this song 🎵❤the 👨man's voice is that 👌😍great 👍sing on Mr Stapleton
We all grew up playing that tune and there are thousands of versions put there but this was exceptional! Every time I hear Chris Stapleton and band play I am more impressed. The horns doubling the organ line is just awesome. The only way this could have been made better is to add another drummer as good as this one. Thanks Chris!
Is that Stapleton's band? They are 🔥🔥🔥. Slide Man even has a Coricidin bottle. I'm impressed. And I already liked Chris Stapleton.
Masterful, all around.
So awesome to see Kenny Greenberg on this......from the Prisoners of Love with Jimmy Hall to The Fortunate Sons to the arena gigs.....such a great player!!
he is a great player and is fire on this song.
Us Southern Boys gotta stick together and Chris is doing this Anthem Justice as are all these musicians.
Freakin’ awesome performance... I heard this live so so many times by the Allman Brothers and this is terrific
Absolutely outstanding!
Chris Stapleton could sing the phone book and it would be amazing. One of if not the greatest singer of all time. I could listen to him sing 24-7 and never get tired of hearing his voice.
Great band and great voice of Chris Stapleton!
All I can say is....WOW!! Before hearing this, I would have said no one could do a righteous cover of this Allman Brothers Band classic, but damn if Chris Stapleton didn't!!! I've seen him live. I should have known. 😁❤
This song can never be played loud enough fking amazing.
Wow! One of my favorite singers, covering one of my favorite songs that originally featured another of my favorite singers. What could go wrong?
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Very nice version...the slide player is even playing a Gold Top, Just like Sky Dog did, back in the day!
My rule is a cover must be as good as or better than the original. Chris and company smoke this one.
How old of a soul do you have to be this soulful ?
If Chris started an Allman Bros cover band I would quit my job and follow them around the country
Wow! That was awesome! Top shelf players... all of them. Chris and Kenny getting it done. 👍
Someone please remind mr. Stapleton that he can't just go around killin folks songs like that!
totally agree. his vocals were the only thing saving it
I hope you meant “killin” in a good way!
They did good. Nobody will ever be able to duplicate Greg’s vocals and what ABB did but this was a good cover.
Theodore Nugent, were you even listening? You're probably not even a musician. If you are, not a good gigging one because your ears are full of the door door. That's Willie Weaks on bass. ANYTHING he plays on DOESN'T suck. This was a damn good version
Of course I mean it in a good way. Listen to him sing Amanda at the Opry
The most impressive show I've seen I believe ever Seen many fabulous shows But he can get it on
Outstanding rendition by musicians capable of delivering this gift.
Rock on
Awesome, Stapleton is tremendous, and Gregg Allman has a whole new respect as a singer from me.
