Very enjoyable summary of a very underrated actor. I got a kick out of the posters for "Saskatchewan"
in which there is a towering mountain range in the background. They don't call Saskatchewan one of the
"prairie provinces" here in Canada for nothing: the word "flat" pretty sums up the terrain of Saskatchewan,
and you have to travel many, many miles west before you encounter the Rocky Mountains in Alberta....

Thanks. I don't think I've seen Sasketchewan but I love the title and the poster art. If you want to check out stats on Alan Ladd's films a friend of mine has a useful site, here's the link if you want to check it out www.ultimatemovierankings.com/alan-ladd-movies/

I have been around since 1950.
Havent heard of 35 of these movies. Shane was his best for sure, and the Rebel. He did not get the Press behind him , or the actors of Hollywood...I think he was better than others in Hollywood.

The archetypal Heroic Actor; could he ever play a villain? Incredibly handsome. Directors had to devise tricks to deal with his lack of height...he was 5'6". Many of the actresses he played against were taller than he was. He was good for the careers of short actresses like Veronica Lake, who was the _perfect_ match for him in several films. Or actresses had to slouch or he had to wear high shoes or stand on boxes or something. But he was very good at what he did.

      Right up there.Only a handful of great westerns in the 1950's - Shane,obv, the Gunfighter ( 1950),the Searchers (1956) and Warlock ( 1959).
The best westerns were made in the 1960's.

3 10 to yuma is another great western classic and I totally disagree with you when you say the best westerns were made in the 1960s ,that's when they looked cheap and the plots were too simple. The golden age of westerns was the decade of the 1950s. So many western classics were made and plus most were shot In 3 strip technicolor. Even the B westerns looked great.

@@randyacuna3248 my apologies - how did I leave out "3.10 to Yuma' .Outstanding film.
As to my second point, just a preference.I felt there was a gritty realism in 60's westerns - films like 'Cheyenne Autumn", "The Profeessionals","McKenna's Gold","The Wild Bunch".
      Even enjoyed the spaghetti westerns.IMHO.

@@richardscanlan3167 some of the westerners you mention from the 1960s were the exception, but as I said before , most were just low cheap b features. Just my take saying the best westerns were made in the 1950s because they were more adult in tone, less roy Rogers, ( I don't mean to disrespect roy) , look at broken arrow , Winchester 73, westward the women , the randy scott buddy boetticher films of the late 1950s , the track record is so much better for westerns in the 50s then the 60s.

@@randyacuna3248 hey Randy - we can have differences in taste,it's all good.
I would also add,it's the only decade of westerns I really enjoyed, but that's not to say there weren't good westerns made earlier/later.
Two films stood out, post sixties - "Soldier Blue" and 'Unforgiven".
The rest for the most part were mediocre.
NB,I have "Broken Arrow'.Very interesting to see a film from the Indians perspective - they were generally depicted as mindless savages. It was a real bugbear of mine in those old "cowboys and Indians" flicks.

Well this page will make a madman from Belfast happy. I have not seen very many of his movies....and even with so much Ladd talk at UMR...I have not been able to track down many of his movies to watch. I was looking at some Ladd comments on my website...and saw my tally count on March 8th 2016 was two...and today April 19th 2018 my tally is 2....but it is your #2 movie This Gun For Hire and #1 Shane....so I guess I watched the right two movies. I have also seen Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid....does that mean my tally is 3?...lol. Voted up and included on our Ladd page.

Hi Bruce, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid is an 80s favorite of mine, such a clever use of classic film clips. I don't think anyone has attempted anything similar since. Only watched 2? I managed 13 and Flora 9. I'm sure Bob has seen more, Ladd is one of his idols. Lucky Ladd had a super western like Shane added to his filmography otherwise he would be chiefly known for noir classics with Veronica Lake, b-westerns and some dodgy historical adventures. Thanks again for the vote, share and comment, much appreciated.

I have not seen many Alan Ladd movies. I have not had access to many. I have seen only 9 of Ladd's movies, but 5 of the them are his top rated movies. My favourites are Shane, This Gun For Hire, The Glass Key and The Blue Dahlia. I have also seen The Carpetbaggers, Proud Rebel, Whispering Smith, The Badlanders, and The Black Knight. The Black Knight was very recently seen for the first time. I see there are a few more crime films he did. I will have to try to find them. I'd like to see Saskatchewan too.
My favourite posters and stills are the first photo with Dean and Jerry, Shane, This Gun For Hire, The Blue Dahlia, The Glass Key, Proud Rebel, The Great Gatsby, Branded, Boy on a Dolphin, The Badlanders, Hell on Frisco Bay, China, All the Young Men, Wild Harvest, Saskatchewan, The Iron Mistress, The Black Knight, and the final still.

There are a few here I'm interested in seeing like The Great Gatsby, Two Years Before the Mast and The Proud Rebel. Thanks for posting, always appreciated. Happy you enjoyed the posters and stills. One more expanded video and I'll give them a break.

    • @Top10Charts3978

Shane is one of my all time favorite westerns, the point of this exercise is that no film is a perfect 10, not even Citizen Kane or The Shawshank Redemption. There are movie fans out there that don't revere certain films the way we do. IMDB gives Shane a 7.6 average, Rotten Tomatoes an 8.5 rating average, Ultimate Movie Rankings gives it an 8.7. So my score is pretty generous compared to other ratings aggregators. Thanks for posting.
