There were a lot of actors in Hollywood that I really admired and will always rate them as great leading actors, but Gary Cooper was my favourite actor.D reason for this is,he acted his role as he should, and not as himself. In other words he was genuine in his performance of all his characters that he acted as,RIP.Gary Cooper!👍
One of the true Hollywood legends, Cooper had it all. Very popular throughout his career, a strikingly handsome man even in his later years, he was one of the greatest actors ever to grace the screen. The recipient of 5 Oscar nominations and the winner of 2 of them, he deserved them all and then some. I'm very happy that "High Noon" is at the top of this Gary Cooper list as it has always been on my Gary Cooper list.
I agree. He received 2 Oscars, but I think his acting skills were underrated. It's unfortunate that most people know him only from westerns and films from later in his career (i.e. High Noon) and associate him with his laconic style because he had much more range than that. He made plenty of films where he played chattier, verbose characters and was great in romantic movies and light comedies. I also liked him in movies that are not included this Top 50 list, such as The Wedding Night (1935).
The most handsome man ever lived. Ironically, his best movie, High Noon, he was paired with the most beautiful girl ever lived, Grace Kelly. RIP Mr. Cooper.
Agree chris . A great looking guy. And a great actor. Grace Kelly most beautiful ? Hmm possibly . But no where near the sexiest. Its a bit ironic that John wayne, who presented Coop with the Oscar, didn't like high noon. Said it depicted western townsfolk in a very poor way. The Duke hath spoken..
Cooper has my vote for the most handsome actor ever. I know some people might say Marlon Brando, Alain Delon, James Dean, Cary Grant, Paul Newman, or others, but none of those other actors can hold a candle to him or had the complete package like he did. He had the face, the height, the screen presence, and the style (both on and off screen). He was probably one of the first actors who looked like he could be a male model and looked great in everything--from cowboy outfits to tailored suits, military uniforms to tuxedos, etc.
@@richardscanlan3419 Yes, it's all very subjective, but I would say Cooper and Peck are in the same league in terms of their looks. Even though they had different coloring, they had similar qualities and both had very sincere eyes and faces.
@@avocate2017 not sure about that, but there is no doubt Cooper was extremely attractive. Saw a video on the top leading men in the Goldenn Age - Brando came in at 1 and Peck at 2. Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power were in the mid 30s - which was a shock ( I personally would have Power in the top 10).
Cooper had a truly impressive body of work. He starred in a wide variety of films--comedies, romantic comedies, love stories, swashbuckling adventures, dramas, war stories, biopics, film noir, and westerns. He also played a wide range of characters--pilots, doctors, architects, soldiers, cowboys, and historical figures. Few leading men of his era had this level of variety in their filmography. Most people know him only from his westerns, especially the ones he made later on in his life, but he was much more than that. I've seen most of these movies, and my favorites are Meet John Doe (#13), Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (#2), Beau Geste (#3), The Real Glory (#27), Sergeant York (#6), The Plainsman (#19), Peter Ibbetson (not on this list), The Wedding Night (not on this list), The Fountainhead (#25), Now and Forever (#30), City Streets (#15), Ball of Fire (#5), Pride of the Yankees (#4), Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (#44), The Westerner (#8), and Vera Cruz (#16). Of course, I like High Noon (#1), but he has so many good movies that I can't say that it's my favorite movie of his.
Great post thanks! High Noon is regarded as one of the greatest westerns ever and usually Cooper's no.1 on these sort of lists, Mr. Deeds is highly rated too.. I've always had a soft spot for Vera Cruz.
@@Top10Charts3978 Yep. He was in so many great films that I wish his work would be rediscovered by modern audiences. Also, I don't want to make any comparisons, but I can't think of any other leading man from that era with such variety in their filmography. Not John Wayne, Cary Grant, Clark Cable, Spencer Tracy, or Humphrey Bogart. Henry Fonda probably comes the closest. Gregory Peck, too, but he came later.

The WRECK OF THE MARY DEARE is a very good movie and one of his best. Surprised it’s not in the top 10. HIGH NOON - you only have to see stills from the movie and the tension the movie generated hits you.
I have seen 32 Gary Cooper movies. The lowest rated film I have seen is Garden of Evil. My favourite Cooper films are High Noon, Garden of Evil, Love in the Afternoon, Along Came Jones, Design For Living and The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell. My favourite posters and stills are from High Noon, Now and Forever, The Fountainhead, Design For Living, Vera Cruz, City Streets, Meet John Doe, Morocco, The Plainsman, Love in the Afternoon, Ball of Fire, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town and the final photo.
Hi Flora, I've seen 16 of the 50, half your tally. My favorites include - High Noon, Vera Cruz. Man of the West, Garden of Evil, Sergeant York, Ball of Fire and Mr. Deeds Goes to Town. Thanks for posting, glad you liked the posters and stills.
Búfalo Bill 1936 ( The Plainsman ). Marruecos 1930 ( Morocco ) . Beau Geste 1939. El forastero 1940 ( The westerner ) Juan Nadie 1941 ( Meet John Doe ). Creo que son auténticas joyas del cine.

I like The Plainsman also, but I can understand why it doesn't rank higher. I love Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur's banter and chemistry in the film and the action scenes, but the film has a slow start and it takes a long time to get to the action. Once you get to the action scenes, Cooper is awesome, but I think both Cooper's and Arthur's horse-riding skills were underutilized in the film. After you see him jumping on a horse, galloping, and then falling off the horse, you don't see him riding much. As for her, you don't see her riding after Cooper helps her get on the horse and she speeds away (for a few seconds). It seems like there was a serious missed opportunity for more exciting action in the film.
I agree with most of this list, except I think The Lives of the Bengal Lancer (#7) and The General Died at Dawn (#26) are overrated. Those are probably two of my least favorite Gary Cooper films.

For whom the bell tolls (7)) was my favorite
High Noon was over rated (9)
I agree!!
Yes!! You’d be hard pressed to find better.
I’ve been surprised not to see « Peter Ibbetson », was this movie rated so low ? And what about « His Wife » ?
“ For Whom The Bell Tolls” #1
"Sergeant York" #6? No way!
But unfortunately most of his movies are lost 😢😢😢
That is incorrect. None of his sound pictures are lost. Many of his silents are lost films.
Sorry... but the Plainsman should be rated better then 18...
Yes, and « The Fountainhead « as well
