Grew up loving Alan Ladd way back in the forties and fifties. Now, Aged 87, have been able to rediscover Alan via the internet and my goodness, how I am enjoying it. I have just watched a dvd I have, "The Glass Key" with Veronica Lake and William Bendix. Wonderful! Can't make up mind watch to watch next as I am spoiled for choice. Regards to all Alan's still watching fans. England, January, 2024.
Good on you sir, I’m not far behind you at 60. Me too, I remember Alan Ladd from my youth onwards. My parents loved watching movies on the tv and me and my brothers watched them with them. They don’t make like they used to do they. All the very best
Watched some of Alan Ladd’s movies in the late movies when I was a kid with my parents. My personal favorite is the movie “OSS” made right after WWII. But anything with Alan Ladd is going to be good.
I have seen this movie before, but I didn't realize it was Alan Ladd! He had a Suave Voice for sure! His wife Betty White was a Beauty as well! They had the most Wonderful Connection! Betty was a Trooper after he passed, but still came back to play on Password! A ROCK Solid Relationship between the two! I miss-M both, butt, I have Fond memories about them! Soo-Likeable! NZ., ✌❤😁👏👍😎🥰🙏
Thank You Very Much for posting this Awesome movie! i Love watching the old movies (like this one) over and over again, rather than watching the new so called movies. :)
This may or may not be a good movie, but I was thrilled to be able to watch it with my mom who is 91. She graduated from the U. Of Minnesota with a degree in drama. (Peter Graves and Pernell Roberts were friends and classmates) Arlene Dahl was her cousin.
That is wonderful, and to go to school with them, my mom, later in life moved to Duluth and made friends with her neighbor who was a cousin to Judy Garland. She had a lot of childhood pictures. Doing my family tree and the help of others, I am related to Drew Carey, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, Chuck Norris.

@markcrawford5983 That's okay. I'm sure I'll find a nice one at DICK'S Sporting Goods. P.S., I'm also shopping for a 27TB hard drive, for the sole purpose of saving all of Alan Ladd's movies.
La vi hace unos 50 años.. Dios mío....Alan Ladd, me da una sensación de nostalgia y dolor, aunque amo sus películas. Excelente actor. Dios lo tenga en su santo reino 🙏🙏🙏🧎🧎🧎
The screenplay for DESERT LEGION was co-written by Irving Wallace (1916-1990), who became a bestselling novelist. Several of his fiction were filmed, including THE CHAPMAN REPORT (1960), THE PRIZE (1963), THE SEVEN MINUTES (1971), and THE MAN (1972). Another novel by the author, THE WORD, was made as a a television miniseries which premiered in 1978.
Miss Dahl was very beautiful. She didn't play in too many movies. She was very charismatic in "Journey to the Center of the Earth," a great movie with James Mason never released for free on RUclips. Sep. 23, 2023, St. Joseph, MO, USA.
General Burkholder, It was pretty nice on Hogans Heroes, the main germans, Klink, Shultz, and Burkhalter were actually german or Austrian, as Leon Askin, Burkhalter was. And he lived to be almost 100. Not bad for somebody that big. But he did go on a diet and lost alot of weight.😊😊
Shane is the all time greatest movie Alan Ladd starred in. It is also one of the all time greatest cowboy movies. The early costarring roles with Veronica Lake are classic gems. Alan Ladd was a superior, highly professional, dedicated true Hollywood star and extremely versatile actor of the highest calibre. His instantly recognized voice was especially unique.
Just suspend belief, sit back and enjoy the action. The plot is thin and full of holes but I really do enjoy these old movies. Thanks for the upload. Good guy always wins the heart of the beautiful lady after a fight to the death with the bad guy. Sounds familiar. 😀
Gr8 movie-did any one recognize 🧐that the Major played by Leon Askin in this movie played General Burkhalter in the comedy series Hogan’s Heroes? Thank you for uploading an array of talented characters of a movie😍💖😘❣️💕🎉💓🔥❤️💝
In an interview on RUclips, actor Anthony Caruso tells a nice story of how he did Alan Ladd a favour when they were young struggling actors. Alan never forgot Athony's kindness and when he, Alan, became a big star he would always find a role in his movies for Anthony ( like this one )
I read something similar, and when I saw this film was recommended, I wondered if Caruso would be in it, and there he was. Alan Ladd was short in stature, but big in every other way.
But there was nothing escapee about la Legion etrangere or the foreign Legion in Algeria and Morocco as their prowess and bravery kept Franve on control of this region for almost 130 years until the Moroccan independence in 1956 and the very hard fought independence of Algeria in 1962. Go learn before coming to write laughable foolishness that only betrays your ignorance and stupidity. Shameful
Great movie! I have been to this area of Algeria in the early 1970's, although I am sure the movie was not shot there, and really enjoyed it. I know it is a cliche but they DO NOT make movies like this anymore, nor can they, in Hollywierd!
Awesome….Love these old movies, and love watching Allan Ladd in them as well…..Hollywood has lost its way, they don’t make them like they used to, quality instead of quantity….when making movies was an art instead of accumulating CGI/AI to do it all, when actors/actresses took pride in their roles and work and gave us a great performance and something to look forward to in the entertainment industry….HIGH 5 to all those who did their jobs well, including all those behind the scenes, in creating a masterpiece of enduring qualities that stands throughout time. 👍🙏🏼❤️🥰🍿🎥🎬🚀
Richard Conte was an intelligent and charismatic actor but was wasted in many of the crap two-dimensional 'villain ' parts that came his way after the '40s: he saw the pictures he made (like this one) as catering for 'a 14 year-old mentality'.
@Terry Blanton Fuck me dead , how could i not even thought that would happen , silly me , it is you that is the imbecile you stupid dick head , read what i said and try and work out what i meant .
Also that camp fire left with the wood still burning. Where did they get the wood? And if they brought it with them they would not leave it behind like that, they would put the wood pieces using the sand and then take them with them for the next fire.
one of the films he did where he got a percentage of the profits,a deal that tyrone power and jimmy stewart got also with universal studios.ladd was a big star at this time with the release of SHANE 1953
Nifty little dust-up is this film despite much that's implausible, such as 19th-century Algerian natives all speaking English flawlessly. Ladd stoic but effective, on a par with his immortal "The Black Knight"!
made after shane 1953,though it was filmed in 1951 and not released till 2 years later.,when alan was one of the top ten boxoffice stars for this year and the next 1954.one of the many films, movie stars did at universal to get a percentage of the profits.
Actually it was way down the list of 1953 movies. About 117th. Movies like The Robe, Peter Pan, From Here to Eternity, Niagara and a 100 others grossed way more money. It's rating on IMDb low. www.ultimatemovierankings.com/1953-movies/
Amazing how these films always depict the real origins of these lands (Hollinwood) as slaves or servant. Beauty as always a certain complexion in the hot desert sand. Right complexion right connection.
Alan Ladd's son, David was also a fine actor. I saw him in the Bonanza movie Feet of Clay with Hoss when he was a young boy. It was a very good movie but a little bit sad as Hoss had to kill his dad. He was an escaped convict. 😮😮😮😮😮
I love period pieces and I've always liked Alan Ladd a lot. But as is usually the case with Most Follywood movies there is at least one major flaw in this picture. A corporal fresh out of boot camp would not even lead a Squad of men much less a full company or larger complement of men into the middle of an apparent box canyon to be ambushed and/or slaughtered. I have no military experience but have studied infantry tactics to some degree. The movie was enjoyable never-the-less.
That has Saturday maninee written all over it, not ready for primetime. Almost a prequel to Lawrence of Arabia. Not bad for watching on a cold, rainy February night.
Thanks, this is a great flick: drama, romance, good guys v. bad guys, beautiful damsel in distress (Arlene Dahl), Alan Ladd and Leon Askin, French Foreign Legion, desert, heat, dust, Gatlin gun, big battle scene, and good guys live happily every after. Hollywood at is best!! Take a look...
Ashamed Mr. Ladd committed suicide latter in life due to artist depression...a very common action with driven artist who cannot find avenues for their creativity...
He'd become a drug-taking alcoholic and it seems that his marriage had long been on the rocks: his wife was his agent (and probably wore the trousers) while Ladd may have been a homosexual ( director George Cukor may have been a lover).
At 55:18 does anyone, who has a knowledge of the Russell Crowe movie, Gladiator, think that Ladd does the same punching combination at Crowe does. Punch, back hand punch, punch?

I think you are getting Alan Ludden and Alan Ladd mixed up. Betty White was married to Alan Ludden who died in 1981
Any movie with Alan Ladd is a great show!!!
I have always liked Alan Ladd. Besides, all of his movies are worth watching for having a good time. God bless him.
It's been a long time since I seen this movie, glad to have seen it again😎
Yes he was a fine actor and his pictures are still good to watch. Very enjoyable.
i really like these type of movies, a sad loss these days. thank you.

Alan had a wonderful voice as you can hear here, and it shone in his Box 13 radio series as well.
I enjoy this movie what great upload love Alan ladd. Thank you so Much good time with my father you are the best

General Burkhalter 12 years before Hogans hero..what a gem this movie is.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed.

But there was nothing escapee about la Legion etrangere or the foreign Legion in Algeria and Morocco as their prowess and bravery kept Franve on control of this region for almost 130 years until the Moroccan independence in 1956 and the very hard fought independence of Algeria in 1962. I guess cranky old curmudgeons aren’t the market they aim for now.
Nothing quite like riding through the desert without any feed for the horses or water for anyone .
Richard Conte was an intelligent and charismatic actor but was wasted in many of the crap two-dimensional 'villain ' parts that came his way after the '40s: he saw the pictures he made (like this one) as catering for 'a 14 year-old mentality'.

Ladd was always good in the action scenes.
Love movies like this😊
Alan Ladd and Richard Conte look pretty well matched both in size and age, for the battle. 😊😊😊😊
It's amazing , horses in the desert without a good water supply and them without more than a few canteens , oh well enjoy the show lol .
Thanks for sharing it! I always enjoy watching Old Movies though. 👍👌👏

This movie is based on a 1927 novel. It actually made a lot of money at the box office.

Amazing how these films always depict the real origins of these lands (Hollinwood) as slaves or servant. Beauty as always a certain complexion in the hot desert sand. Right complexion right connection.
People of those lands were not movie stars, and did not look like movie stars. So not important, and only bit parts
Thanks, Katarina.
Alan Ladd's son, David was also a fine actor. I saw him in the Bonanza movie Feet of Clay with Hoss when he was a young boy. It was a very good movie but a little bit sad as Hoss had to kill his dad. He was an escaped convict. 😮😮😮😮😮

Yes, you are correct.

Shane. The most famous Alan Ladd movie. Also, with Brandon DeWilda as the young boy. 😅😅😅😅😅
always liked Alan Ladd movies, not the ones that took place in modern times, though.
i love the Laural and Hardy version best!
damn good movie to be made in 1953!
Even more amazing is that it was made in 1952 but not released until the following year.

This is a good film.
How did they get behind us ,I don't know say's the commander? Great leader who leads his men into a obvious ambush.
After the dramatic first scene, film is just talk

The major in the beginning is a young general Burkhalter from Hogans Heroes. lol
Yes
General Burkhalter From Hogan's Heroes.... Leon Askin plays Major Vasil...
You’re right it looks very young in this picture
Allan Luden was the MC of password married to Bettie white not Allan Ladd
i hear the French Foreign Legion "boot camp" was worse that Seal training,
Not all in the French foreign legion were criminals, the legion just made it a habit to not ask about your past.

The Russell Crowe movie came way after Desert Legion.
I enjoyed this movie but , in black and white would have been better.
