My dad loved this movie. It was only recently that I realized Brandon De Wilde’s reaction to Alan Ladd’s sharpshooting - “Gosh-a-mighty!” - was probably where my pop first heard that expression. He used it almost daily! ☺️

My Great Grandfather drove a Hansom Cab in London and I have always wondered what made him decide to move to Australia.I have often surmised it may have been a desire to live in a wide open land? Perhaps his experience with horses may have been a factor too? I wonder if many British troops who fought in the American War of Independence decided to stay in the USA after the war because of similar feelings?
Visited Australia last year to see my daughter as she progresses through her studies and witnessed your fabulous country to realise Britain is still in post war bleakness with little to offer as a future for those with incentive for better lifetime opportunities

It still makes me shed tears. As an Asian who was born and raised in Korea, I haven't experienced life in old day America. But it gives me nostalgia, emotions and memory, even though it was carved in my heart only through the old black and white 12" tv.
I live in Jackson Hole. I never get tired of watching Shane ride down out of the Gros Ventre. The movie was made before the Jackson Hole Ski Area was developed across the way. At Stark's cabin you can see the Gros Ventre Slide, which happened in 1925. The movie takes place near the old town site of Kelly, which was settled before Jackson town. The slide caused a flood the aftermath of which caused many to move.

Chairman (Mao) Powell & Fed. Reserve is Mr. Riker at Jackson Hole and are the hired gunmen for the very rich who are robing America blind with debt that they do not owe in order to bring down the Constitution & Dollar. Next, they will implode the dollar system with a boom and bust stockmarket, while, foolish men make plenty of un-worked for ill gotten gain-- easy money. The credit system will implode by despotic design. Then, Fed. Res. will bring in their slave system of Digital Currency (CBDC) which is no currency at all. Just credit at the company store like the sharecropping system of the South wherein farmers got very little for their labor. Digital Currency will allow the Jackson Hole looters to rule over the people with near absolute control seeing everything you buy and telling you what you can buy and if you can buy or sell!! Sound familiar -- Revelation's The Mark of the Beast System. But, God will have the last Word in the Salvation of Man with The Lord Jesus Christ and the preaching of the Gospel bringing men to repentance from dead works by the work of the Holy Spirit through faith toward God by His Grace through Faith least any man should boast. @@thepraxiscircle I visited your site and found that I agree with your aims, though I have no religious beliefs. Your "Worldview" seems to equate, generally, with what I would term, "A sense of life" as described in The Romantic Manifesto by Ayn Rand. I strongly recommend that work.

Alan Ladd was a very small man in stature but he seemed much larger than life in this classic Western. The opening scene of Ladd on horseback and the incredible score by the great Victor Young always brings a tear to my eye. Its sheer simplicity makes it more powerful and breathtaking. Alan Ladd manages to deliver a performance of Earth shaking dimensions, almost Academy Award worthy. This was Ladd's greatest performance. Understated yet powerful, he epitomized the screen hero like few others.
The rhythm of this movie is incomparable! Alan Ladd IS Shane! Robert Redford said he used much of this easy and slower rhythm for his Roy Hobbs portrayal in "The Natural". Shane is the best western movie of all time!

I was almost Joey's age when I first saw Shane. Time has not dimmed the enormous appeal it held for me then. Despite so little gunplay compared to later Westerns, the movie riveted one's attention throughout with heroic characters, a strong storyline, and breathtaking scenery. I always felt grateful to George Stevens for taking this assignment so seriously and making an insignificant cowboy novel into a grand movie of undying beauty.
The book was insignificant in the sense of not getting initial critical acclaim but the writing was deep enough that George Stevens, to his eternal credit, recognized the characters had great depth to them, with the makings of a potential triangle that Shane heroically rides away from at the end.
From the opening theme,I start shedding tears...and the close up of Alan Ladd brings back memories of my Dad and I watching this numerous times....a simply magnificent western.

And in less than 8 minutes, we get the characters, the stakes, who's in conflict and what their goals are. Right down to the characterization of each person. Each line MEANS something. The line, "I'd like it to be my idea." shows his temperament and he's not open to being pushed around. My dad’s favourite film. He introduced me to this masterpiece a few years back and we sat and watched it together. It’s one of my all-time favourites and has such a special place in my heart!
Alan Ladds beautifully understated performance shines throughout this classic film. Shane is the baddest gun in the west and he knows it. No bragging, no look at me and my lightning draw. Just a quiet confidence and assuredness in everything he does. Even when he encounters hired gun Jack Wilson, there is never a doubt who will win. Shane cooly dispatches Wilson into a pickle barrel! Ladds Shane is the easiest hero to root for in film history because he's on the side of right. And in Shane's hands a sixgun doesn't just make right. It makes might. Robert Redfords Sundance Kid, Clint Eastwoods Josey Wales. They all better turns their pistols in to the bartender. Not one of them can mess with Shane. The baddest hero in the greatest western of them all.

Alan Ladd was born to play Shane. I was 9 years old when I saw Shane in the neighborhood theater. The acting, settings, music and most importantly the realistic, convincing dialog never left my memory. Since then I have watched this movie over and over, never tiring of every scene. Brandon deWilde was superb in his role. I was saddened by his early death and the passing as well of Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur and Van Heflin. One of the best westerns in league with High Noon and Stagecoach for dialogue.
I came across the movie on TV when I was around 14 and it’s been my favorite ever since. I even acquired a long barreled nickel plated genuine Colt.45 later on. In later years I thought his buckskins were way out of place for 1889. In the book he dressed dark more like bad guy “Jack Wilson”. But big deal. it’s still great.
The very first movie that I ever saw in the cinema. I never forgot it. I could not have been older than 6. Those guns blazed like cannons. Great Fun! Great movie! I read the book later in school. It was great book too. I just might reread it when I get a copy.

As the decades go by, Shane becomes more shrouded in mystic...the scenery, the production values...and Victor Young's peerless soundtrack which has never been equalled;...well, maybe 'The Big Country', ( Jerome Moross ). Young can transform a scene with just few notes...another example is the take-off sequence, ( YT ), of a B-36 in 1955's 'Strategic Air Command'. The Shane theme is called 'The Call of the Faraway HIlls'. Victor Young died a few years later in 1956, a great loss the the music profession.

It still makes me shed tears. As an Asian who was born and raised in Korea, I haven't experienced life in old day America. But it gives me nostalgia, emotions and memory, even though it was
carved in my heart only through the old black and white 12" tv.
Thanks, sir. Most of us here in America haven't experienced the old West either in person, but as you say, it is still a moving story regardless.
Thanks for Sharing
see America in 1950s, Wyoming
Greeting from America.
I love this movie the first time I saw it I always will excellent movie I highly recommended very good family movie

Thanks for reading. God Bless

Just about the most beautifully crafted opening scenes in the history of western films. The music too is splendid.
This movie introduced so many of us to The Tetons. They are even more beautiful close up. If you go to Yellowstone, you have to stop in the Tetons.

@@thepraxiscircle I visited your site and found that I agree with your aims, though I have no religious beliefs. Your "Worldview" seems to equate, generally, with what I would term, "A sense of life" as described in The Romantic Manifesto by Ayn Rand. I strongly recommend that work.
@@Baskerville22 Thanks for checking out our website! While not everyone has a religion, everyone has a worldview. Ayn's "sense of life" is on the exact right track! We'll have to include her book in our readings. Thanks!
SURE HAD ME SNORTING SON...... MY FAVORITE WESTERN EVER,,,
I,m not tired of watching this excellent western movie so many times.

One of my top all time, 3 westerns ever made fantastic plot, fantastic actors and a musical theme that people could never forget.
What is 2 other westerns?
I was almost Joey's age when I first saw Shane. Time has not dimmed the enormous appeal it held for me then. Despite so little gunplay compared to later Westerns, the movie riveted one's attention throughout with heroic characters, a strong storyline, and breathtaking scenery. I always felt grateful to George Stevens for taking this assignment so seriously and making an insignificant cowboy novel into a grand movie of undying beauty.
How right you are.
My heart becomes very HEAV every time l see or hear about this masterpiece.... and the music... the music...
And de Wilde dies at age 25 (?)... how sad...
@@zuhairbakdoud1360 My other favorite roll was portrayal of Jer Torre, John Wayne's son in "In Harms Way"
The book was insignificant in the sense of not getting initial critical acclaim but the writing was deep enough that George Stevens, to his eternal credit, recognized the characters had great depth to them, with the makings of a potential triangle that Shane heroically rides away from at the end.
From the opening theme,I start shedding tears...and the close up of Alan Ladd brings back memories of my Dad and I watching this numerous times....a simply magnificent western.

Shane rides down into the valley with his head held high in hopes of finding a new and better life. As the movie ends, he retraces his steps, head down with the realization that he can't escape the life of a gunslinger. I was so moved by this movie that I named my son Shane.

I was 13 years.
I wanted to go WEST.
Im nearly 84yrs of age. Although Liverpool was bombed by Luftwaffe. I Saw Shane when teenager, loved it. Post War Britain wasn't so bleak. Good office job when I left school 1956. SIngle teenager money to spend. Dad, electrical eng. brought new house 1938/9. £500/£10 deposit. Post war Europe was bleaker. 🕊

And in less than 8 minutes, we get the characters, the stakes, who's in conflict and what their goals are. Right down to the characterization of each person. Each line MEANS something. The line, "I'd like it to be my idea." shows his temperament and he's not open to being pushed around. So when he comes back around the house to stand against the bullies, it already seems in character.
This movie is an oddity: perfect in every way, the acting by the entire cast, direction, music, writing ect,

A lovely and compelling theme by Victor Young an exceptional musical talent.

In the novel, the protagonist is portrayed as dark and slightly "menacing", but George Stevens luckily chose Alan Ladd when he couldn't get his first choice, Montgomery Clift. I watched this again after seeing this intro (thanks, Amazon Prime!), and I was really impressed. I had seen it some time ago, but it must have been a cut version on cable, and/or I just wasn't paying attention.
The best western ever!
Jack Palance...evil ! Strother Martin another class of what my dad would call " the man you love to hate"!!!
The very first movie that I ever saw in the cinema. I never forgot it. I could not have been older than 6. Those guns blazed like cannons. Great Fun! Great movie! I read the book later in school. It was great book too. I just might reread it when I get a copy.
I read somewhere that the director wanted the guns loud so they shot them in a barrel and dubbed that in... they are loud.

Put me in in mind of On the Trail from the Grand Canyon Suite.
Shane’s quiet stance in this scene is one of the best in any movie. I am a friend of Starth’s!
The Rikers recognized that he was a gunfighter and decided to back off.
I am a close friend of SHANE.

No doubt, the greatest western of all time and just as moving as my first viewing some seventy years on! ......Only Alan Ladd could pull this off under the superb direction of George Stevens. A timeless classic.
