A film released in the 1980s, yet has the vibe of those historical epics from the 1960s, that's one of the things I like about this film!

    Brilliantly played by Anthony Quinn.
Amazed though that they appear to have kept Reed sober for an entire film.
Gielgud is the same in everything and always reminds me of 'Spitting Image' whenever I see him.
Didn't quite get the Italian soldiers in girl guide hats, although I am sure that is factual.

Humans all humans since the beginning of time have been fighting over land. None of it belongs to anybody. Humans since the beginning of time have gone to places that aren’t theirs and said now it’s mine. If there was somebody there, they conquered them and took it and moved on, and this has been going on since the beginning of timehumans will always fight over everything and anything always. There is no exception to that statement.

A far better movie than expected. The recreation of the battle scenes was expertly done and well directed. 1981 and financed by Muammar Gaddafi, so it is no surprise that it is broadly accurate, but does not portray accurately the war crimes and atrocities of Anthony Quinn's Arab character. Also no surprise that the Italian government rightly banned it for many years, as its portrayal is skewed with an agenda.

Quite an extraordinary movie about events just after the rise of the Italian dictator Mussolini in the 1920's. An interesting historical period, in that the leader of the Libyan rebels, Omar al-Mukhtar, is still a much respected figure in North African history . General Rodolfo Graziani, the Italian commander, was also involved in the North African battles during WW2. Some of the battle scenes are rather graphic but still a movie well worth watching.

as a Libyan it does since the fight continued after the death of Omar AL Moktar, also the Italians couldn't conquer all of Libya (since people thinks they had it all) only coastal areas at that time and main Libyans forces was in Jihad at the southern lands (Chad and Niger today) against the French, plus main forces of Italy was against the Libyans at that period since it was self-state ruling under the ottoman and it is not their first time to clash against super power countries, before that they had a clash against the USA and Sweden combined in early 18 century, and they managed to defeat them both, this war called the American Barbarian war in their resources and in Libyan recourses called the war of 4 years, also explains why Tripoli is mentioned in American marine Anthem.

Marshal Graziani would suffer a terrible defeat when a 30,000 man British force led by General O'Connor invaded Libya and defeated an army nearly 10 times larger commanded by the Marshal in 1940. While perhaps an expert in fighting Libyan rebels, he was no match for the British Army. Hitler had to commit the 15th and 21st Panzer Divisions to prevent the loss of Libya.

You think the Italians or the Romans introduced bloodshed and war to somebody who didn't have it?!?
This Mukhtar guy was a descendant of people who themselves were invaders of Libya (and practiced slavery there as well as piracy, one of the principal motives for the Europeans to come in and conquer North Africa in the 19th century was to rid of the place of these Ottoman-allegiant "beys" who kept on committing acts of piracy upon European towns and shipping -- even as far away as Iceland!!).
But, you think the slave-trafficking tribal savages of the North African desert matter, in some special way?

Although thoughtful prayers and doing good, it still falls short of Jesus Christ ability to forgive sin and grant eternal life. You can't earn your way to heaven its only by faith and taken into your heart that Jesus is the only way. You even get up to the last breath to call on the Name of Lord to be saved. Now that's Grace you never known! OK the actors displayed some talent too, wonder where they acquired the skills? All blessings come from above.
